At it's core this game is just like any other traditional RPG game with menu fighting. It's similar in that regard to games like Final Fantasy, or older games like Chrono Trigger.
In the menu RPG category what this game does differently is add a lot of quick time events (QTE) and timed parry requirements to fights. A lot of people enjoy those menu fighting RPG games because of how relaxed they can be since they give you the ability to calmly fight and pay less attention to the screen. The QTE and parry requirements do make it so you are encouraged to stay focused and react quickly which can turn some people off. There is an easy mode where if you crank up your defense you can ignore a lot of things, but even on easy there are encounters and bosses you won't be able to do unless you can nail those timed parry events.
The world and soundtrack are amazing. Many will find the story to be great, but others will find the story slowly gets worse over time and lackluster at the end. I found the story gave a lot of plot slowly in the beginning, then it was like all characters for the longest time refused to talk about anything story related with substance until it was nearly the end of the game. It dragged out the mystery so long that I personally lost interest, which made the ending a little more underwhelming.
For me the best part of the game was the beginning, and then being allowed to explore such a beautiful world. I had fun taking my time exploring every area, killing every monster, and enjoying the beautiful sights. The people who made this game clearly did so with a passion. The soundtrack often matches perfectly with the vibe of the world. The character's facial expressions are animated wonderfully, and they are all impactful to have around.

I scoffed when it won Game of the Year. I bought it a while back after seeing the reviews, but it sat on my “I’ll play it if there’s really nothing else I feel like playing” list. I finally gave it a chance, and I’m so glad I did. This is easily one of my top 5 favorite games.
To keep it short: the story and plot are excellent, no complaints. There are a TON of cutscenes, which was a plus for me. At times it felt almost like watching a movie. It’s easy to become emotionally attached to the characters, whose personalities are very likeable. The atmosphere is gorgeous and the music is beautiful. They go hand-in-hand with each other. This game won 436 Game of the Year awards, making it one of the most awarded games in gaming history, and after finishing it, I completely understand why.

I have experienced so many different types of games, from action games to RPGs, adventure games, platformers and many more. I am also someone who pays a lot of attention to details in games. The atmosphere, the music, the world design, the characters, the gameplay systems, everything matters to me.
Because of that, it is honestly very difficult for a game to completely surprise me and make me fall in love with it.
But Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 did exactly that.
I never expected a game to surpass some of my personal favorites like Assassin's Creed 2 or Life is Strange. Those games always had a special place for me. But this game changed everything.
This is the best game I have ever played.
I cried multiple times while playing this game. I even cried when it ended, not only because of the story, but simply because the journey was over. I was genuinely sad that this incredible experience had come to an end.
I am still not ready to let go of this game. I will get all achievements and probably play through it again because I just cannot move on from this world yet.
The music is absolutely incredible. It is so good that I actually listen to the soundtrack on Spotify in my free time. The gameplay is addictive, creative and something I never expected to enjoy this much.
The funny thing is that I was extremely skeptical before playing this game. I never really got into JRPGs or turn based combat. I tried games with similar systems before, like Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario, but it was never really my favorite genre.
I started this game with a lot of doubts.
And then it immediately pulled me in.
The story is so creative, complex and interesting. From the very beginning, I wanted to know more about this world and its mysteries. Even when I was still learning the controls and combat system, the game did an incredible job introducing everything naturally.
The characters are written beautifully. The voice acting is amazing, and every character feels unique, understandable and memorable. The enemy designs are some of the most creative I have seen, the attacks are exciting, and the abilities are incredibly well animated.
The whole progression system with Pictos, Lumina and the different builds is so creative. You are always thinking about your next combination, your next upgrade and how to make your team better. My biggest recommendation is to not look up guides for the strongest builds. Just experiment and create your own experience.
The world design and graphics are also unbelievable. This is easily one of the most beautiful games I have ever seen. The environments, the atmosphere and the art direction are absolutely breathtaking. I took countless screenshots because I was constantly amazed by the world.
The game also had almost no bugs for me, which is impressive.
I could honestly talk about this game for hours. There is so much more I could say, but words are not enough to describe how special this experience was.
I recommend this game to everyone. It does not matter if you usually like JRPGs, RPGs or even turn based combat. Give it a chance. This game is worth every single euro.
Looking back, I would have easily paid 100€ for this experience.

The fights are fun, engaging and offer a decent level of challenge from start to end (hitting those parries feels very rewarding) and the character mechanics offer enough variety for you to want to engage with each of them. The game is not complex at all and I think even newcomers to RPGs will find it accessible
The game starts super strong with an incredibly appealing story, characters and world building. However I do feel it falls a little flat after all the plot twists are revealed but maybe that's just me I find much more appealing the idea of an expedition making a last-ditch effort to save humanity than the family issues of the Dessendre and the conflict of the world outside the painting, also it's a little funny to me the fact that "For those who come after" became such an iconic phrase when either nobody is coming after since they are being erased or they just remain in a limbo like dream for Maelle
Now in regards of the pacing and difficulty. I think the game is at its best when you come across the optional special enemies under leveled and stubbornly decide to take them out anyway and at its worst once you finish all the optional content and return to end the game only to find the last fights in the story are so easy in comparison that you feel you cheated by exploring the world but that's a common thing on RPGs so I can only advice to kill every enemy as soon as you meet them but when you hit the last chapter stop exploring and finish the game before you overpower everything and the pacing will feel extraordinary
The soundtrack is an absolute beauty and I constantly listen to the songs in my daily rutine specially In Lumière's Name, Lumière, Linen and Cotton, Goblu, Entrance to the village, Monoco, Taking Down the Paintress, Une vie à t'aimer and many others
I really cannot recommend enough for you to buy the game and the soundtrack

This game has already made it into my top 5 best games I've ever played, easily. The music, the atmosphere, the characters, the story, all of it is just incredible so far.
Its got some really emotional moments that hit your chest, but then it turns around and has some hilarious bits in it that had me cracking up. I'm not even finished yet so i cant say how it all ends, but right now I can already tell this is something special. its been an amazing experience so far and i really don't want it to end.
Also this game runs amazing, didn't have one hiccup and played 9 hours straight.
Sad I'm coming up on the ending I think... but I will probably replay it and do a 100% completion and check every nook and cranny on the next run.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

However, this game has some serious flaws. The combat is boring, they might as well call it learn to parry the game. There's a dodge mechanic, but parrying allows you to do massive damage to enemies and take no damage to the point where the rest of your equipment doesn't even matter all that much. Sure, it'll make battles faster, but it has nothing to do with being able to win fights. Sure, you can dodge, but what's the point? They throw in a jump but it's so far and few in-between it almost doesn't exist.

The prologue was some of the most astonishing animation, storytelling, soundtrack and general experience I have ever experienced. And I bought this game for the story, and I would have been served but... I just don't enjoy the fights, it's not how I wanted it to feel like. Absolute respect for this team building such a great game, because there are more than enough people who enjoy this kind of turn based and statistic driven combat. It's just not me.

This game is not a gold standard, it is the Star Platinum standard for turn based RPGs going forward. A game made with such passion it is overwhelming.
