This one makes you feel it in your chest.
MAJOR SPOILERS WARNING
On the surface it looks like a gorgeous game about stopping an apocalypse. But underneath that it's a story about a mother who couldn't let go of her dead son, a father destroying an entire world to save his wife from herself, and a daughter caught between two lives wondering which one is actually hers. Nobody here is a villain. Everyone is just broken in their own way and trying to survive it.
Then there's Verso. A painted copy of a dead boy, fully aware that he is not real. He never asked to exist. He just woke up one day inside someone else's pain and had to figure out what to do with that. He spends decades watching people die, loses the person he loved, grows tired of everything, and eventually decides the kindest thing he can do is end it all. Not out of hatred. Out of pure exhaustion. And his own mother, when she finally sees him, looks him in the eyes and says: you are not my Verso. After a century of feeling and losing and carrying all of it. Still just a copy.
And somewhere in the canvas a faceless little boy wanders alone, painting endlessly, keeping the whole world alive. Everyone made decisions around him, about him, for him. The only one who ever bothered to ask what he wanted was Verso himself.
The game never lets you feel comfortable. It builds people you care about and then asks you to decide their fate. Do you save a painted world full of people who laugh, love and die just like anyone else? Or do you free a soul that has been trapped inside it since the day he died?
Neither answer is clean. The game doesn't pretend otherwise.
Life keeps forcing cruel choices. No other game has made me feel the weight of that sentence the way this one did.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tWell, I can't believe I'm actually playing this game because I've largely put it off due to the crazy amount of hype and bandwagon-ing surrounding it, but 10 hours into the expedition I do have to say, the game managed to deliver my expectations and some. I don't know if I would necessarily rank E33 along the all-time greatest titles, but it definitely shows that it is made with love and care, something that is exceedingly rare in today's gaming market.
The game has absolutely phenomenal visual presentation, and supports the ultrawide format natively. I've ran the game on both 4K 32" and 1440p 34" ultrawide, and in both instances the game looks beautiful but for this kind of story-driven adventure, I do personally prefer the ultrawide form factor for its immersion. There was only one time where the game had a very brief black boxes around the sides during Maelle's Nightmare, but otherwise so far everything ran natively 21:9 no issues.
As someone who hated games that every single person talks about over and over, and being a rather harsh critic having grown up on titles like Chrono Trigger, Skyrim, Diablo, Warcraft and other all-time classics, E33 did manage to win me over. Whether it be the art direction, soundtrack, character design, storytelling or combat, it passes everything I have hoped that it would given its reputation.
The operatic soundtrack sets the tone immediately and the amount of variation played on the main motif is refreshing and artistically delivered. In E33, music is not only integral to the experience but builds upon the narrative being driven, adding suspense, tenderness and other mixes of emotions during key moments of battle and story reveals. The pacing is very solid, there is just the right amount of storytelling mixed in with going through dungeons, and truly there's just never a dull moment unless you specifically choose to venture off into the wild and do the side content. The optional content gives nice outfits and weren't just entirely braindead "go fetch X item to Y" entirely, it feels like even the side NPCs serve some level of purpose instead of just being there for the sake of being there.
I think most players will be pulled into the story 1-2 hours in and continue onwards seeking to find out more. This is exactly what happened to me and when a game manages to captivate, that's really all there needs to be said at the end of the day. I felt connected to the characters and shared their sense of hopelessness, dread, fear and desire to push on, it didn't feel like another cheap iteration of "random gang of nobodies goes out to fight big evil thing and save the world from certain doom" even though I do believe that's the idea so far, but perhaps I will have to revisit this point once I'm fully finished with the game.
Just a quick final note for an initial impression, combat is very satisfying and I love that the game offers you rewards for playing well. If you learn the attacking patterns of enemies and can reliably parry/counter, you are able to take on enemies that if you were just playing a plain turn-based combat RPG you wouldn't be able to. Challenging the player to play well and rewarding them for it is an excellent approach to combat that I wish more games would adopt instead of just letting you grind mindlessly, get overlevelled and spam the A button to victory. You can do that too in E33, if you so wish, but that does take away the satisfaction of taking down a big baddie that you know you otherwise shouldn't have been able to if you didn't play very well and parried attacks on-point. The sound effects when you do land a counter also just gives such a nice dopamine hit, you love to see and hear it.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI hadn't heard of Expedition 33 till the 2025 game awards, when I saw that this game pretty much won every single award there. My buddy and I immediately wrote off this game as "overrated" or a "sell-out" industry plant-type of game. It wasn't until the game went on sale that my buddy got it and told me that it was very good. So I picked up the game myself and was blown away. The games I play during winter are on a whole other level. The story absolutely gripped me and I haven't been this invested in a story since the days of Attack on Titan. The designs, music, and art direction are also phenomenal and the character work is stellar with the main cast and antagonists. It has a good amount of content and a fantastic post-game that makes the game feel like a good investment without feeling overwhelming. The combat honestly reminded me a lot of the Mario and Luigi games mixed with Sekiro, with the parrying, various character work, and stuff of the like, so whatever party you set up, they can be fun in their own ways. But that ending left me devastated, and with the additional story told in the optional content, like the camp events and secrets bosses, elevate this game to such a high tier for me. What a phenomenal game, best one I've played since Elden Ring and a top 3 game of the 2020s, and it ain't #3.

The combat was fun, but it got so incredibly repetitive that I ended up putting it on easy to stop having to deal with it. It reminded me if Final Fantasy 13, if it was open world with zones. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAesthetically, it's a really impressive effort for such a small studio. The world looks appropriately fractured, painterly, and dreamlike. Cut scenes are well-rendered, with natural and expressive animations. The soundtrack is serviceable--but I'm a little baffled by folks claiming it's the best thing ever, but you really can't go wrong with classically-inspired themes and angelic choirs.
The plot I can't speak much for because I won't make it through to the end of the game. It started off with a fascinating, rich concept that had me hooked hard at the very beginning, with strong themes of grief, acceptance and persistence in the face of a cruel and uncaring universe. Since then, the storytelling has fallen off pretty hard. The story is conveyed almost entirely through dialogue and cutscenes, which are loaded with really lackluster g-rated banter, and entire conversations that convey no information because the writers are just desperate to be mysterious. The characters are all distinct, believable people (the ones that are people, anyway) with personalities ranging from 'likable but forgettable' all the way down to 'shut up shut up shut up shut up.' The latter happens mostly because the writers try and fail to be funny. The acting, however, is absolutely stellar on every level.
So, if this game was a film, and had to stand on artistic merits alone, it would be a very solid recommendation--not really in a league with the best, but absolutely worth a playthrough.

Each area is given a distinctive visual design, but once you're in that area it's a bunch of same-looking tunnels with no landmarks or minimap to help with navigation, and nothing interesting to stumble across when you inevitably wander around lost. Around every corner, there's a fight--usually with the same small handful of enemies you've been fighting every couple of minutes (or couple of seconds) for the past hour-so getting anywhere feels like a complete slog.
And to be honest there just isn't much of interest to find out there. I would have thought that a game that so heavily emphasized this idea of legacy--67 whole expeditions giving their lives to pave their way "for those who come after"--you would actually get to spend more time following in the previous expeditions' footsteps, searching for clues, learning their story and piecing together their knowledge.. but anything of that nature is reserved for cutscenes. In exploration, the most you'll find of previous expeditions is their old campsites and some one-page journals that tell you absolutely nothing. Instead, you walk a few feet, fight something, grab generic loot, rinse and repeat while your sense of curiosity withers and dies.
And then there is the other thing. The combat. The game's core concept is to incorporate mechanically-demanding dodge-parry mechanics into a turn-based combat system. I've seen the idea work in a few other games. But here, it's actually really awful. The game is desperately trying to be a soulslike JPRPG, but I'm sorry--there's nothing fun about a soulslike where your feet are nailed to the ground and you're constantly flipping through menus. Nor do I care for a JRPG where strategy comes secondary to raw mechanical input.
Parry counterattacks are implemented in such a way that, while they are pretty obnoxious to pull off (the visual indicators are so inconsistent that it's sometimes easier to parry if you don't look at your screen at all, and rely exclusively on audio queues) but they're also overbalanced as hell. If you don't parry, you die. And if you do parry, you take no damage, you deal massive damage, and you recharge your resources. It's so strong that every other combat mechanic in the game becomes irrelevant--you can skip all your turns, only parry, and still win the majority of battles. And frankly most of the combat encounters don't have interesting mechanics to them at all, other than increasingly ridiculous (I've heard up to 20 consecutive parries in late-game) parry combos, and parrying increasingly weird, gimmicky fakeouts.
Learning to consistently land parries in the first few hours of gameplay was fun, and was satisfying for a few more hours after that but halfway through the first act it had already become boring. And that would have been fine, really, if the gameplay didn't revolve almost entirely around slogging through one fight after another just to be drip-fed fragments of story every couple of hours. The battle mechanics are not my favorite as they depend on reflexes so much (I prefer strategy to dexterity) but your mileage may vary. I played on expert difficulty and it was rather hard in the early game and personally annoying due to reflex mechanics but it got more rewarding later on.
The story is engrossing but ultimately it's all over the place. The creators over-focused on emotional impact and forgot that the story actually needs to make sense. The characters making decisions for objectively stupid reasons. So that's what gets it down for me. Oftentimes I've found myself being like why not make this wholesome decision here instead of this most depressing choice just because. It's a big missed opportunity IMO.
I reckon the artists were given full freedom with this one and you'll be hard pressed to find a prettier game or better sounding one but the story is a big let-down. The game is dead set on making you depressed by the time you are done with it. Still I'd recommend the game as it's just so beautiful. It is an experience. 8/10\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The game starts off heavily narrative driven, but still gives you the option to learn the base mechanics before throwing you into the ordeal. The thing you instantly notice is the melancholic, operatic soundtrack that sets the tone going forward. The start of Act I already shows off the game's great environmental design and use of colours, which the game keeps up until the end. The characters fit nicely into this world visually speaking, even if the monologues and dialogue might be a little cheesy at times.
The gameplay itself is somewhat interesting, the need to adapt and build synergy between the characters keeps the repetitive gameplay loop bearable. Enemy encounters are usually very similar or identical, even among different enemy groups. The battles themselves are enjoyable, as you need to be accurate with your timings while attacking, dodging, and parrying. Overall, the system repeats itself heavily, which becomes painfully evident in Act II. The story is still there, but it’s basically just a copy and paste of Act I, minus the new scenery.
One thing we also “get to have” whilst progressing through the game is new companions with their own abilities and powers. While it’s great to give the player more options to “choose” from, the game doesn't actually let you choose much. Instead, when your main trio gets wiped out along with all their synergy, you’re left with Team Bravo, AKA the two outcasts you haven't spent much time with and their total lack of synergy.
Now, what actually made me write this review was Act III. It's always nice to see different media “risk it for the biscuit,” so to speak. The music, enemies, environment, atmosphere, characters, monologues, dialogue, and THE story all get a huge buff here... without spoiling anything specific. This game is definitely worth looking into, even with its faults it is easily one of “the games”.

I loved absolutely everything about this game. The story, the soundtrack, the combat system, exploration.. everything felt so well thought out.
The turn based combat combined with dodging and parrying makes every encounter challenging, satisfying and very addictive. The world is big enough to explore and discover things but still focused enough to never feel overwhelming.
I feel the game was just the right length too. Just enough content without dragging things out forever. (Don't get me wrong, the game can be very long if you want and there are so many builds to try out that you can even play this forever)

Visually it's also beautiful and the atmosphere really sells you that feeling of being in a dreamlike, painterly work of art. Unfortunately that's about where the positives end, as in the end it's a video game and I fail to understand how the gameplay lives up to the hype.
To start with, this game has one of the most abysmal ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ combat systems of any game I've ever played. It is advertised as "turn based combat", so you expect to stop, think through every move, and use strategy to win. However, the twist where they added dodge and parry mechanics to this system is implemented in such a way where strategy becomes completely irrelevant and the way you build your character and execute your turns doesn't matter AT ALL as long as you can press the parry button at the right moment; missing a parry is lethal and can one shot your character, but landing one completely nullifies ANY incoming damage, and hitting the full chain of parries inflicts HUGE counter-damage. This is made even worse by the fact that the visual cues are so unreliable that it is easier to rely on audio cues rather than actually looking at your screen. I cannot emphasize how ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boring and tiresome this becomes after the first 5 hours; this gets so bad in the second half of the game where combat just devolves into surviving increasingly absurd sequences of deceptive fakeouts and 15-hit parry chains.
The other thing is that exploration is almost pointless as each area has literally nothing of interest in this "open world" apart from the same handful of enemies you've been fighting every 3 minutes for the past hour and 1 or 2 pieces of generic loot.
Ultimately this is a gorgeous piece of art trapped inside a miserable video game. If you have the patience to endure endless, rhythm-game parry slogs and wander through lifeless, empty expanses just to earn the next scrap of genuinely brilliant story, you might squeeze some value out of it. But as an actual turn-based RPG? It’s an exercise in pure frustration that fundamentally misunderstands what makes both tactical combat and exploration satisfying.
