I bought it off-rip after watching the game awards, going in basically blind, thinking it had ZERO CHANCE of living up to its unbelievable 9 awards at the show (I voted for Silksong, sue me; I haven't played this game prior), and like 1 hour in I found myself glued to the computer in a way no other piece of media managed: the set pieces, the music, the characters, it's like being hit with Cupid's arrow 20 times.
You could not pry me away from this game prior to finishing it; I had to limit my playtime just to not finish it in one go and ruin my enjoyment of it from how invested I was.
The whole game is an orchestra, a celebration of art, music, love, and romance, and it's a beautiful symphony. Even the soundtrack of the game tells its story without a single word spoken, and it became my favorite video game OST OAT (yes, even more than Nier, Half-Life, and Undertale).
Everything you heard people glazing this game and hyping it up as the potential "game of the decade"; it lives up to that hype tenfold.
You follow the most captivating and immersive story with so many layers to this onion you would find yourself sobbing just picking it apart, with powerhouse characters, actual units of storytelling, emotional leads, and compelling villains with stellar motivation. Untill this one I was locked in the whole game, I basically reached nirvana.

I barely knew anything about it before it won 9 awards at The Game Awards and honestly, I'm really glad I didn't know anything. While I'm not sure this game is worthy of 9 awards at the biggest gaming award show on the planet (I don't know if there is a game that does), I can definitely say that I won't be losing sleep over it.
I've been playing video games for over 75% of my life. It's almost impossible for me to remember a time in my life where I wasn't playing video games. I have never been more reminded of why I fell in love with playing games than while I was playing this one. It reminded me why video games are a medium. Why video games are an art. Why I and millions of other people come home everyday to play video games instead of engaging with the outside world.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an experience like no other. It's something you have to play at least once in your lifetime, because there isn't another game out there that will give you the experience that this game gives you. Everything about this game, the story, the characters, the world, the art, the battles, and goodness that soundtrack is the best thing I've ever heard out of a video game. It all feels so well crafted to the point of near perfection that you may start to think that the developers were visited by a higher power at some point in its creation. For a game where "painting" is one of its core elements, they sure as hell painted a damn masterpiece.
I don't want to say that much specifically about the details of this game because I feel it might take from your own experience if you go and play it. All I can say is, just try it once. I engage with a lot of media. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of movies, plenty of TV shows, anime, and played many video games. I can't compare this game to anything I've ever experienced. You will smile, you will laugh, you will cry, and your eyes better be glued to the pixels that are being projected from your monitor. This game may be fiction, but it'll make you feel like it's real. It might make you feel emotions in a way that you haven't felt in a long time. This is one of the select few games in existence that you have to play at least once. I do not care for turn based combat, I do not get too bogged down in story or lore, and I never get emotionally invested in characters or really identify with them. If story and characters do resonate with me in a game, then that is awesome and I am here for it. However, normally I am a combat-driven game mechanics type of player and that is really the only thing that matters to me. The hype and energy around this game was so unreal that, against my better judgement, I decided to try it out despite those things. I am so happy to say that this game proved me incredibly wrong on all of those things as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took me on one of the most fun, intense, and emotional rides in a video game I have ever had.
Gameplay
Right off the bat this game solves my main gripe with turn based combat. You actually get to participate during your opponents turns through the parry and dodge mechanics. No more waiting around to play the game again, or hoping for favorable RNG if you were to get hit. You now get to time dodges or parry attacks when it is your opponents turn, and based on how well you do those two things you can generate more action points (AP) for when it is your next active turn to do more special attacks. This is such a welcome addition that I hope other turn based combat games adopt this model. If Expedition 33 is not the first then chalk this statement up to me not having played enough of them.
All player characters have a unique fighting style which gives each of them their own subsystems that you will need to learn, but the game does a good job explaining them and they do become intuitive. There are six player characters in total so you end up with two teams of 3. One being Team A and the other being Team B which comes out in the event that your main three fall. Due to each character having their unique combat styles and there being six of them, the leveling and customizing loadouts can be a bit overwhelming as you have a lot to keep up with. Not only are you leveling your character stats and weapons which synergize with each other in terms of scaling, but you are also keeping up with your pictos and lumina abilities which you can think of these as character perks. These are perks such as: gain a shield when falling below 50% health, or my favorite one, every parry generates and additional AP point. There are a ton of these to sort through and make a judgement call on who should get which perk. The good new is, basically every build in this game works well so even if you just throw some perks haphazardly to your characters and do not optimize them, you can still absolutely do well in this game.
Graphics & Art Direction
Expedition 33 is stunning from both fidelity and art direction perspectives. On one hand the game packs a major punch when it comes to resolution and detail of the world, characters, and enemies. Then on the other hand it has the most unique environments and enemy/boss designs as far back as I can remember. When I was playing the game there never came a time when pattern recognition kicked in and I could draw a comparison between what I experienced in Expedition 33 and any other game I played previously. Clair Obscur is undeniably its own thing. The use of various color pallets is on a very high level of eye candy. The colors are punchy, vibrant, and bold. Environments will range from bright & upbeat to somber & depressed that fit the story seamlessly. The latter are even with pops of color that give such nice contrast to the darks that I think OLED monitor owners will be very pleased.

I am not going to regurgitate the synopsis you can find anywhere online. I am going to be very brief overall as you simply just need to experience it for yourself. I do not want to risk ruining or detracting from your experience somehow. Just know this, there are no cheap tricks used to pull at your heartstrings, and everything gets the proper time to marinate and develop before you are explicitly explained anything. Even if you are very good at piecing stories together and you predict most things, you will still be happy with this one. The voice acting is phenomenal, the music is beautiful, hauntingly beautiful at that, and the writing is top notch.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Man, I really wanted to like this game and leave a positive review, but after finishing it last week I just can’t. The game isn’t bad, but it is definitely overrated in my opinion. I don’t think it deserves the “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam, especially because games with that rating usually transcend their genre and can turn non-fans into fans. This game is not that. It’s a fairly standard JRPG with great graphics, music, and an interesting hook, but the gameplay and storytelling have enough issues that I don’t think it deserves all the praise it gets.
Most reviews praise the story and gameplay, but honestly I found those to be the weakest parts at times.
The biggest problem for me is the worldbuilding. The game throws you into this mysterious fantasy world but gives almost no grounding or context for a huge portion of the game. There’s little explanation for what kind of world this is, why everything is floating, who these creatures are, what the rules of the world are, or why things function the way they do. The core premise is interesting. A Paintress writes a number on a monolith and everyone of that age dies. But the game takes too long to give meaningful context to anything surrounding it.
Because of that, I struggled to become attached to the characters or invested in the stakes. I kept waiting for the game to explain what was actually happening and why. Even fantasy worlds need understandable rules. Instead, I often felt like I had missed important cutscenes or backstory. The Gestrals are a good example: the game clearly expects the player to love them, but there's no reason why. You have no idea what they even are. They mostly felt like Minions to me.
I had just finished Baldur's Gate 3 before playing this, and the difference in storytelling and worldbuilding was huge. BG3 constantly grounds the player in its world through factions, politics, lore, dialogue, and character motivations. My wife watched me play through most of BG3 and ended up starting up a character herself and putting 100 hours into that game. She never plays RPGs. Meanwhile E33 put her to sleep every time. E33 seems more interested in preserving mystery and emotional symbolism than building a believable world with understandable rules. I know that approach works for some people, but for me it made the story harder to connect with because I never fully understood the world or what was truly at stake.
Act 3 finally explains why the story was so mysterious, but by that point the game is pretty much over and the structure of the world starts causing gameplay problems. The world opens up and you’re encouraged to explore and do side content...or end the game. Except many of the new areas can instantly destroy you with little warning. Exploration became frustrating in Act 3 because progression is now based on trial and error rather than natural discovery. I got bored and wanted the game to end. I played other games. Eventually I returned, completed more side content, avoided much of the optional areas, became much stronger, and then ended up massively over-levelled for the final boss, which made the ending anticlimactic. Overall, Act 3 felt very rushed and really hurt the overall experience for me.
The combat is also a mix of really good ideas and frustrating design decisions. The Pictos system is genuinely cool because it lets you create strong synergies and customize builds in interesting ways. Weapons are also varied enough to feel meaningful, especially when combined with certain Pictos. I also liked the upgrade system, which feels somewhat similar to Dark Souls.
That said, I think the attribute/stat system was a mistake. It was difficult to tell how much impact individual stats were actually having on combat, and by the end I mostly just maxed 1–2 core attributes and relied almost entirely on mastering dodge/parry timing. Since the game is so heavily built around reaction-based defense mechanics, stats often felt secondary or even pointless. Recoats are also so plentiful that respecing has very little consequence anyway.
To me, the game feels caught between two combat philosophies. Either the attribute system needed to matter much more, or the dodge/parry mechanics needed to be less dominant and punishing. As it stands, timing is far more important than character building, which made a lot of the RPG systems feel less meaningful than they initially appeared.
In the end, I don’t think it’s a bad game. It has excellent presentation and some genuinely interesting ideas. But for me, the uneven pacing, weak worldbuilding, and inconsistent gameplay balance keep it far from being a masterpiece. Most of the positive reviews I read of this game don't mention any of this so this is why I'm leaving a negative review.

I’d recently gone to a convention and was lucky enough to attend a panel with Jennifer English, who voices Maelle. I already knew the game had been getting a lot of praise, but it wasn’t something I was actively planning to play, especially since I don’t usually enjoy controller-heavy games on PC.
But the panel was genuinely great, and what stood out most was how passionate the fans were. After the panel, my sibling gave me the final push, so when we got home I decided to give it a proper go. I ended up streaming the entire game from start to finish with them, and I think that shared experience made it a lot more memorable. It’s something I can already tell we’ll look back on fondly, especially because of how the story unfolds.
The start though? Bit rough. I was terrible at the game. The UI felt clunky, I couldn’t get the timing or dodging right, and I didn’t fully understand what the game was asking of me. On top of that, the story felt confusing and a bit all over the place. It didn’t really ground me early on, so I was mostly just trying to keep up.
What kept me going through that first stretch was the presentation. The music, the art direction, and the world design were all incredibly strong, enough to easily carry me through Act 1 even when I wasn’t fully sold on everything else.
Then Act 1 ended and I just sat there in shock.
Instead of clearing things up, it actually left me more confused, but in a way that made me want to keep going. I went into the game completely blind, so I had no idea what to expect.
Act 2 is where the game properly clicked.
The pacing picked up, I started connecting with the main cast, and while there was still a lot I didn’t fully understand, the reveals started landing in a really satisfying way. I could see parts of the bigger picture forming, even if I couldn’t piece it all together yet.
Around the same time, the gameplay started to click too. I got much better at the timing and mechanics, and the game opened up in a way that felt rewarding. I liked that you could approach challenges in different ways, either by brute forcing it and pushing through under-levelled, or by stepping back and building your characters up more.
The build system ended up being one of my favourite parts. Once I had more tools to experiment with, I found it surprisingly addictive. Each character can be played in multiple ways, and putting together different team compositions, finding synergies, and slowly refining builds made progression feel really fun.
Throughout all of this, the music and world design just kept delivering. Some of the tracks are genuinely stuck in my head, and the environments were consistently impressive. Even in moments where things felt a bit weaker, those elements carried the experience.
By the time I reached the later parts of the game, I was fully invested. I just needed to see how everything would come together.
And the ending… really hit me.
It’s been a long time since a game left me feeling this way. I wasn’t just emotional, things felt heavy. Almost unsettling. Some of the decisions made didn’t sit right with me, and when it was over, I didn’t feel like I could just jump back in and keep playing. It clearly shows the game did a good job getting me emotionally invested, but I just can't look at some of the characters the same anymore.
I did a good amount of side content along the way, and there’s still some optional things left, including one major thread tied to a certain sibling. But for now, I think I’m done. Maybe I’ll come back to it later, maybe sooner than I expect, but right now it feels like the right place to stop.
I think it’s an easy recommendation. Looking back, I had a genuinely great experience with this game, especially from Act 2 onwards. The music and art direction alone are things I know will stick with me for a long time. I completely recommend this game to anyone who likes deep emotional stories broken up occasionally with comedic side content and plenty of places to explore.
