Expedition 33 is probably one of the few turn-based games that I'm genuinely invested in. I love almost every second of it. Incredible soundtracks, interactive gameplay yet strategical, the world's aesthetics, and the dialogue; the banter feels so... how do I say it, like so incredibly organic, especially for modern games, which is something I'm really loving. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tWhile what this game managed to achieve size wise with it's modest budget is definitely commendable, during my playthrough I had to realize that Expedition 33 is likely the most overrated piece of media in recent times, and that fact simply got validated more and more as my playthrough progressed.
I resented the characters nearly without exception which was the main issue for me. The one exception being Verso. The rest of the cast's writing, appearance, and general acting is unfortunately incredibly mililenial-coded, nearly every conversation is always relying on cheap comic relief in an otherwise "serious world" (never seen that before!), cracking jarring, poorly written jokes to ease the mood even during supposedly meaningful conversations. Which, you quickly find out why the developers turned to - as whenever there IS a dramatic, hard-hitting scene in the story, the character's acting is laughable. Maelle's crying face might as well be the least believable portrayal of emotion I've seen in a videogame. And since they couldn't get their character acting right, it made sense for them to turn nearly all dialogues into a light-hearted, goofing around tone. It's been a long while I have seen characters in a game that whenever started acting, I was hoping for the cutscene to finish as fast as possible, as at times it's really unbearable.
The story itself is good, which is a shame, as a story with nearly no likeable characters is hard to enjoy. The music is without a question, outstanding.
The fighting is definitely a really enjoyable part of the game, however since it eventually turns laughably easy even on hard difficulty, especially near the endgame where you one shot every opponent, ultimately it didn't make up for the lack of a great general direction in the game.
Ultimately, if you are looking for a not too difficult but rewarding action game where you can hone your parry skills in a turn based format, it's definitely worth a shot. You will have fun for a while.

\n\n\t\t\t\tI resented the characters nearly without exception which was the main issue for me. The one exception being Verso. The rest of the cast's writing, appearance, and general acting is unfortunately incredibly mililenial-coded, nearly every conversation is always relying on cheap comic relief in an otherwise "serious world" (never seen that before!), cracking jarring, poorly written jokes to ease the mood even during supposedly meaningful conversations. Which, you quickly find out why the developers turned to - as whenever there IS a dramatic, hard-hitting scene in the story, the character's acting is laughable. Maelle's crying face might as well be the least believable portrayal of emotion I've seen in a videogame. And since they couldn't get their character acting right, it made sense for them to turn nearly all dialogues into a light-hearted, goofing around tone. I think this games story is very interesting, I have mentioned to friends that I would watch a TV show about it if it were to ever come out. To me, though, the gameplay is very dull, it is a parry simulator and you will regularly, if not most of the time, use the same moves over and over again. Lots of challenging battles that put your skills and wit to the test. Character that I cherished and wanted to know more about. And a story that kinda made me think abit. It was very french too. The combat is kind of familiar with dodges, parries, and even the idea of turns, yet it is so refreshing and new. The gameplay is so smooth and instinctive, yet it is very punishing and unforgiving. The story is creative and captivating. It is so beautiful, and the way they tell it only makes it better and better. You can very easily get lost in this world, meeting goofy NPCs, finding hidden merchants, or even killing a random thug level enemy that gives you the craziest upgrade to your loadout. I have no words to describe the music; my favorite was the gestrals. The characters are all well designed and unique; they all have their own personalities, emotions, and troubles. And I can't not mention the cinematics, They are simply the cherry on top. There are challenging parts of the game, but you shouldn't let them scare you from trying, for it will prevent you from experiencing all of the above. The game has many choices for difficulty settings, letting people with all types of skill levels have their own fun in the world of Lumiere. I just recently defeated Simon the Divergent, so I felt like it was time to share my feelings on this game. If I have anything to say, it's that the bosses of the endless tower are simply ridiculous and mostly aren't even a fun challenge, except Simon the Divergent, as even though I spent weeks learning and perfecting his pattern, I had fun and liked the boss. In summary, just the main story without any additional content is worth experiencing, but everything else adds so much.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
