\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI liked everything about this game. A 3D platformer souls-like with nice challanges and a great story. Funny characters and jokes. This game is not a souls-copy, it is a crab-cartoony-gimmicy souls-like game which respects the genre. And also has some new ideas integrated.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI did not expect this game to be quite as fun and challenging as I thought! Coming in, the art does make me "underestimate" the game a bit. "Oh it's probably Souls-like but easier." Not at all. While it does get easier as you grow stronger, when you're at the bottom tier, you will struggle. That being said, I did experience moments where I have to fight a boss several times (hungry) before I win, and other times, I won after 1 try (the bosses with 2 phases) or 2 tries (chopstick).
There's some strategy in how do you choose to fight; raw strength or skills that relies heavily on your equipped shells. I went for raw strength which probably made it easier in the long run.
They do have maxed stat, so at some point you won't be able to upgrade the strength stat and you'll have to choose another.
What surprised me the most was the story. It...got really dark. Spoilers here; usually a story has obvious character growth, something that changes them once they learn through their journey. But here, 80% of the time, our crab just wants to go home and be done with the shenanigans. 20% of it, he's posed with a question about the future. Yet, the game ended with him finding neither the answer nor going back to his home. Even the state of the "world" got worse with more trash coming in.
Which I personally think is an interesting choice. It's not...bad per se, I just did not expect such a cute looking game to suddenly go very philosophical and be realistic about the state of the world. There's no magic wand to make everyone's dream come true. I respect that.
I love how the trash is utilized as parts of the cities. The art style is definitely really refreshing and colorful only to then change when reaching a certain part of the story and it adds to the whole vibe they're going for. The music itself was very fitting. At first, the more modern sounding music threw me off a bit, but eventually I saw the vision and I find myself enjoying those quiet moments with just the music.
It was satisfying being able to kill that damn crab before getting hint about you know what. Collecting all of the shells are also quite fun and satisfying. Exploring the maps and areas that you weren't able to go before without a certain skill is quite enjoyable and rewarding as well.
The game did fail to address how to "fish" so I only figured out what to do with the X until much later, then I had to backtrack a lot.
The Save/Respawn location is much more forgiving in that they're close to each other. And at times, you can just respawn a few steps away from the boss you're fighting.
Oh, but there was 1 boss fight I didn't win because it stopped appearing after I died a few times. The boss "lost interest" in me. That was shocking! And unique.
Overall, I really enjoyed playing this game, I sink a lot of my free time to it and I was sad once I finished the game. No, I probably won't New Game+ this but I'm glad that there's that option in case my future self wants to revisit it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Here's the thing, for a small indie studio in the states who had like 11 people at the time of this game, and it being their SECOND game and first attempt at the souls format, it is legitmately impressive. But I've turned into a bit of a critical-pants critic almost snobbish consumer these past years and I like to pick apart intricacies and process what I like and what I didn't like and this game unfortunately came off the heels of my bloodborne playthrough and I already tore that game apart for its issues, but again I have a lot of grace for this considering its origin and development.
First off the bad, cause there's not thaaat much here to whine about to be honest. What I really didn't like during the first half, aka the first 7 or so hours, was the level design. It was either incredibly linear with basic enemies blocking progress, or a giant open area with the actual way forward just being on the edge of the map (the sands between, the shallows, floatsam vale). I was enjoying the combat for the most part even if it wasn't very engaging and felt limited, but the progression and levels were sooo boring imo. And the only bosses I liked up until scuttleport was the intimidation crab fight.
HOWEVER, once finishing the cereal box map and arriving at scuttleport, you're handed the 2nd best level in the entire game behind the old ocean. It's still linear, but the way it wraps around itself and loops back and throws a bit of spice at you is perfect, even if the boss at the end was really lame. BUT THEN, you fight roland who is a top 3 boss, and then u have a whatever area but then you get to best fight in the game.. inkerton. A complete copycat of father gascoigne from bloodborne LMAO. Then old ocean happens which was excellent and sprawling and had two super fun optional platforming gauntlets, then 3 back to back great bosses (albeit praya dubia wasnt greaaaat). Like when you're fighting a dude who's just as fast as you and you're hitting all the parries.. THAT'S when and where the game shines best.
So scuttleport and onward, 8/10, but the first half is like a 6/10. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tA great game. It’s fun to play because it nails the fundamentals. The combat is excellent—fluid and fast; dodging and parrying work exactly as intended. Exploration is great, too; wandering off to random locations feels truly rewarding. The story is solid and drives the game forward, and the characters you meet are interesting. The protagonist is a major highlight. I also really appreciate the inclusion of assist options, which I made use of. There’s a map that, while not overly detailed, is helpful for gameplay. Most regions and biomes are interesting to explore.
Unfortunately, the game has a few downsides, too.
- Difficulty - I feel the difficulty is a bit excessive; you die far too often. Standard encounters and boss fights are too hard for a casual, enjoyable experience. I had to use the assist options because, without them, the game feels like it’s on a *Dark Souls* level of difficulty. It might look fun and cartoonish, but it’s anything but—it’s a tough, demanding game. It’s good that there’s a "lifeline" feature for when you get stuck (gun)—though I didn't actually use it myself, that was only because I had already made the game easier.
- A few regions are terrible—though most are great, like Sands Between, Grove, and Old Ocean—but some, like Scuttleport and Unfathom, are truly awful; I had hoped they would be much shorter—I just wanted them to be over.

The dev's sense of humor is hilarious, the gameplay is fun and engaging, the secret areas are actually hard to find and the whole "one building is complicated enough to spend hours exploring every crevice" property of the soulslike genre is very present. Not to mention the combat is incredibly fun, with a fresh take on soulslike combat that still manages to add unique elements of creativity. Beyond all that, the story is fun and lighthearted as one would expect from a game of this style, which makes it hit much much harder when it takes a turn for the serious and starts actually engaging with difficult narrative themes like the dangers of apathy and greed. Absolute masterpiece, I might have to play it a third time. Oh and speaking of, the second playthrough is even better. I love it when NG+ actually adds things to use. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tA chill, refreshing take on the souls-like genre. This was technically my first souls-like game, and I had some trouble learning the mechanics. Eventually though I did get gud. The art style is unique and colorful, mechanics with the shells and upgrades are awesome, and even the story beats kept me engaged as well. I was surprised how funny this game was at times AND how wonderful the soundtrack was, specifically the music in New Carcinia. What BANGERS those are. I can see it not being as appealing for more “hard-core” souls-like players as there isn't a ton of min-maxing, build crafting, and quest lines as those games. However, in this case I think less is more. Those core mechanics are still here, they just aren't as fleshed out, and I'm okay with that. It makes it a more linear, chill experience in my opinion. I think the underlying message of the game at the conclusion of the story and taking care of earth/our environment was a nice touch as well. My only complaint is that I wish there was more replayability. I know the Year of the Crab update added NG+, Boss Rush mode, and some other cool additions, but that wasn't enough for me to play through the game again. Things like different quest lines or story paths is probably what would make me replay it again. Nonetheless, it was still great to see the Year of the Crab update was a completely free update to the game; another casual W for Aggro Crab. I think this is a great casual souls-like game for new players to the genre or returning players looking for a more laid-back experience with some unique mechanics not present in From Software games.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The whole art design of "cartoony but heavily polluted ocean" is really fun throughout, with extremely cool enemy designs out of "crabs fighting with garbage". A lot of the fun is honestly seeing the next design, the next environment, that'll use these concepts.
The shell system is very cool, but it doesnt take long for it to boil down to "just take whatever", especially as you start leaning into umami abilities more then shell skills.
The combat is honestly the games biggest weakness. Its fairly satisfying throughout, but never particularly interesting. A game where blocking is very strong is hard to make feel varied, and that feeling is pretty strong throughout. None of the bosses particularly stuck in my mind as they didnt feel very unique mechanically. This could change in new game plus however, as it seems quite different.
