What is not visible from outside the tin is how much is stuffed into it. Five characters, each with their own pool of ability cards – which further allow multiple playstyles – and level progression, three game modes with multiple difficulty levels, and then daily challenges. Completing a game in any mode gets you a rank based on the time it took, so there is a time-attack aspect as well. I needed 100 hours to get all the achievements, and – if I wanted – there are still some things left for me to try.
I will talk about "adventure" mode next, but first I will quickly mention that the two other modes are of a procedurally generated kind, the difference being that in one of them you go into the scenario with a deck you built, while in the other you are expected to build one as you go. Both fun in their own way.

Alas, it is exactly in this lovingly put-together narration that the game's hideous flaw lurks – the writing makes use of the "from whence" construction! I could not believe my eyes, but it is true!
This being my pet peeve, it means I have to mark this review as a negative one – I just cannot recommend a product made by people who misuse "whence".

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tReally nice card game. I was immediately struck by how sharp the graphics are. It's clearly a work of love, there is a lot of attention to details from sound effects to animations.
Attacks are based on Poker hands: pair, three of a kind, straight flush (ie. 2,3,4,5,6). A pair is base 2 damage (+all ongoing effects/class abilities), three of a kind is 3 base damage, and so on.
Most attacks will be with 1 or 2 cards, however as your character levels up you gain more abilities so each turn is a mix of attack with cards in your hand + abilities such as Finish Him, Shield Up, Offensive Stance and so on.
The story is told on cards. It's mostly fluff but sets a mood for each adventure. From Forest, to marches, to icy mountains. Each adventure (Sea, Desert, etc) has some events where you can make a decision, similar to the random events in Slay the Spire. So on subsequent runs you may want to pick one side or the other depending what you want.
That said after completing all adventures in the first two difficulties (Spring, and Summer) I find those choices not to matter too much, as the level up Trait choices matter more.
The default game mode does not use a map. There is however an "Invernal Spiral" game mode inspired by Slay the Spire, which does not use a prebuilt deck, complete with a map.
Yes, the game can sometimes be rage inducing due to the RNG. Sometimes the AI just pulls pair after pair of higher values than yours, or for example once it top decked a face card 3 times so it cancelled my "Finishing Blow" Warrior ability 3 times in a row which was highly frustrating.
However after ~20h of play I find RNG is not that big of a deal. There definitely is strategy. Of particular importance, if you click and attack the game always picks the cheaper cards you can play HOWEVER sometimes it's not the best choice because for example it might use a Heart, where you might prefer to spend a higher value card, but of a different suit (like Diamond), because you know you'll be able to use the Heart to activate a healing ability. So i'ts important to plan ahead and not go with the "auto" picked cards when you attack.
Oh, one last word about deckbuilding. I'm not really into deckbuilding. In games like Hearthstone I'd rather use pre-made decks than agonize for an hour about which cards to take. Fortunately the deckbuilding is fairly simple here. The starting deck has a good selection of useful abilties, and you can simply replace some of them with the better cards you earn after completing adventures (for example you may replace Shield Up with Shield Up +1). So updating the deck is relatively straightforward. I imagine it's possible to really specialize a deck (for example Warrior tends to do well with Shields and Defense), but at least for Spring and Summer difficulties I found there was no need to agonize over a specific strat, just update the deck with the best cards you earn. Now, maybe in the last difficulties the deck will need to be more specialized, in which case there are also shared decks on the Discord.
