There are a few minor bugs, like characters occasionally getting stuck, but overall I think you've done a decent job designing the game.

However, there's one thing I just don't understand. Maybe it was intentional, or maybe it was overlooked: people play games to relax, have fun, and explore—not to burn countless hours on the same time-wasting mechanics that have become common in survival games.

Why does reading a book have to take so much real time? Why does research take forever? And why won't NPCs start working immediately even when they already have all the required resources? Why force players to sit around waiting for things that add nothing to the experience?

Most people simply don't have the time or patience to complete an endless list of artificial waiting tasks. The era of games padding playtime like ARK-style survival games should be over.

In the end, players won't remember your game by saying, "That was a great experience." They'll remember it by saying, "This game wasted my time."

If this time-consuming design philosophy is intentional, that's your choice, but I can't rate it very highly. I'd encourage the developers to actually sit down, play the game themselves from start to finish, and experience that frustration firsthand. Unless you're designing the game for people with unlimited free time, I think these mechanics should be reconsidered and made much less tedious.

Bellwright: an actual sandbox, not a roadmap with WASD support

Bellwright entered Early Access with broken pathfinding, rough combat and NPCs occasionally sharing one communal brain cell.

It also entered Early Access as an actual game.

The core loop already worked: survive, recruit villagers, build production chains, equip an army and liberate the region village by village. Since then, Donkey Crew has kept expanding and repairing that machine instead of disappearing into the Early Access fog.

THE GOOD

Bellwright lets you decide what kind of game you are playing today.

In co-op, one player can chase quests while another hunts, gathers, plans the settlement or handles logistics. Solo, you simply change jobs whenever the mood strikes.

You can:

  • Rush progression or turtle for fifty hours.
  • Build an efficient production network or live like a forest goblin.
  • Fight honourably or commit crimes against pathfinding from the nearest rock.
  • Win through melee, archery, fortifications, logistics, numbers or industrial-scale cheese.
  • Follow the campaign or spend the evening discovering why nobody is making flour.

That is actual freedom. Not a dialogue wheel offering three flavours of the same outcome, but a game that lets the player decide what the evening is about.

Bellwright also understands something many sandbox developers eventually forget:

An overpowered strategy in a single-player game is not a public-health emergency.

Weapons, armour, progression and encounters do get rebalanced, but balance is treated as a default rather than holy scripture. Difficulty settings cover raids, damage, hunger, spoilage, learning speed, durability and most other sources of suffering. There is also an official Modkit and Steam Workshop support.

Some games notice that players are enjoying turrets, animals, farming or defensive engineering and immediately call the balance police. Bellwright usually fixes the machine and leaves you in the driver's seat.

Want a serious medieval campaign? Fight clean and raise the difficulty.

Want to build trenches, abuse terrain and establish a logistics-powered murder economy before advancing the story? Also valid.

The game is not constantly leaning over your shoulder like an anxious dungeon master asking whether you are having fun correctly.

The developers also kept working after the launch money arrived.

Since release, Bellwright has received major settlement-management improvements, prosperity systems, animal husbandry, official modding, caravans, automated trade, fortifications, new regions and factions, planning tools, player-built roads, better army control, performance work and a frankly indecent pile of smaller fixes.

Large updates are followed by hotfix trains for crashes, co-op, quests, navigation, interfaces and late-game settlements.

That does not guarantee the future. It does prove that the studio has spent more than two years shipping features instead of merely announcing its intention to develop a game.

Valheim found enormous success and then began developing at the speed of continental drift: months of silence followed by news that somebody had invented a new roof angle. Bellwright's cadence comes from another universe.

The ownership model is refreshingly boring:

  • Buy the game.
  • Play offline.
  • Host co-op from your existing world.
  • No mandatory publisher account.
  • No microtransaction bazaar.
  • No paid gameplay-DLC staircase attached to the main menu.

The AI voices are clearly disclosed placeholders. They add more than silence would, and I am not performing a toolchain exorcism over temporary voice acting in an unfinished game.

THE BAD

Freedom is not polish.

The map is broad rather than densely authored. There is plenty of walking, repeated ambient dialogue and downtime where the simulation matters more than handcrafted discovery.

The early game can also feel brutally grindy before villagers, priorities, outposts and logistics begin carrying their share of the workload.

NPC automation still requires supervision. Workers ignore obvious solutions, choose scenic routes through danger or halt an entire production chain because one basket is in the wrong emotional state.

Much of the game is about designing systems, watching them fail and determining whether the cause was poor planning, missing resources, bad priorities or an NPC who has silently decided to abandon material reality.

If diagnosing why your settlement stopped producing food sounds like unpaid technical support, this may not be your game.

THE UGLY

Combat becomes good only after you personally reverse-engineer it.

There is directional blocking, stamina management, spacing, equipment progression, army commands and plenty of room for preparation. The problem is that the game explains far too little.

I wasted hours studying timings, testing weapons, separating bugs from mechanics and learning which encounters were simply not meant to be fought in the obvious way.

There is no reliably current developer wiki, no useful public bug tracker and no definitive combat tutorial that explains the whole system without mixing current mechanics, old information, guesses and half-obsolete advice.

Before that knowledge clicks, combat can resemble a medieval washing-machine accident.

Group fights become chaotic. Hit detection can feel questionable. Enemies crowd together. Allies block attacks. Archery and terrain can trivialise encounters, while direct melee against several bandits can turn into a public execution within seconds.

The game also does a poor job of communicating whether you lost because of your timing, equipment, stamina, positioning, army composition or some current mechanical defect.

Once equipment, preparation, positioning and commands come together, battles can be satisfying. But the learning process is not elegant. It is field research conducted on your own corpse.

WHO SHOULD PLAY IT?

Play Bellwright if you enjoy:

RimWorld, Necesse, Abiotic Factor, Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, Valheim, Terraria, Factorio or Mount & Blade.

Not because Bellwright perfectly copies any of them, but because it occupies the same dangerous intersection of survival, logistics, construction, strategy, combat and "I will just reorganise this one production chain before bed."

Its best moments come from solving problems the game did not explicitly script for you: turning a weak settlement into an industrial base, preparing a campaign, reorganising supply lines, fortifying a position or finding a completely unreasonable solution that somehow works.

Study it first, or wait for 1.0, if you primarily want:

  • Kingdom Come-style tactile combat.
  • The Witcher's authored quest density.
  • Baldur's Gate 3's characters and campaign.
  • Skyrim's skill-and-magic toybox.
  • A small, polished loop that explains itself properly.

Bellwright is unfinished, sprawling, grindy, occasionally stupid and unusually generous with player agency. The developers have also given UE5 enough attention to resurrect performance from the grave, although results still depend heavily on hardware, settlement size and current patch quality.

It has bugs. It has cheese. It has workers who occasionally behave like medieval printers.

It also has something increasingly rare: developers who keep building the game without trying to confiscate the player's fun.

\n\t\t\t\t\tAmazing concept, but structurally flawed to a level that I've uninstalled it. The AI usage of making a working village just doesn't work. It's a key aspect of the game, and it simply fails. I so want this game to work, have plugged 50 hours into trying to make it work, but unfortunately, it's an utter failure. I still believe in the concept, but it's getting uninstalled as multiple hotfixes have done nothing to solve the real issues. Honestly, I'd get a refund if I could; it's just unplayable. As it is, I'll wait a year and try again. Great shame, as the game promises so much.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI can't recommend this game in good conscience even though I definitely like it.

While I really do enjoy the building aspects of the game, I find the combat extremely simple and boring. The best way to do combat is to pick just about any weapon and never attack in the same direction as your last and don't attack from the right against a shield opponent. That's it. If there is more to it I have either not discovered it in over 130 hours of gameplay or it just isn't useful enough for me to go looking for it.

Now what I will say is that this game does scratch and odd itch for me. As far as 3d colony sims go. This is honestly one of the better ones I've seen. I've been aching for a 3d rimworld and this is the closest I've seen. The villagers (usually) do what I want them to. I do find acquiring more villagers passed 25+ to be harder and harder in an unfun way. I really want to make a bustling city with walls and sectors but I can only do so much when (what seems like mid game) I am getting limited in my "sandbox" fun.

My final gripe is the building and general netcode. If you find getting stuck on poorly surfaced DICE game terrain is really annoying then you will have some of this. Anyone who has played the recent battlefronts knows how annoying it is to get stuck, bouncing off the same poorly designed rock over and over again. This game does that sometimes and does have a useful unstuck key. The building also falls under this. For some god forsaken reason the game dev decided to add a stupid, useless, building restriction system. I can't place my walls flush against the terrain because the terrain is poorly hitboxed onto the actual physical decal of the object. You cannot place things inside of other things (which affects nothing but limits creativity which is nice.) There are instances where I would like to place a gate or wall to prevent bandit expansion using a certain path, only for a small gap the be open because a rock cannot be removed and is in the way.

This game honestly has a lot going for it but it gets hamstrung by all the little inconsistences this game has. They are a specific type of inconsistences that really make my ideas for this sandbox fall flat and its very infuriating. If none of these issues bother you then I say go for it, it really does have decent gameplay and you can get around the bland combat by amassing troops.\t\t\t\t\t

Just a forewarning, the "placeholder" voices are absolutely atrocious, and the dialogue needs some serious proofreading, because it is in extremely broken English. Additionally, the combat is just very clearly an attempt at replicating Mount and Blade (which is fine. Taking inspiration from another game is a good thing). The issue is that it's kind of a poor replica of the combat, because it's substantially slower. Changing directions is not nearly as fluid, and the attacks come out quite slow. If it's going to replicate it, it really needs to replicate M&B 2's much more fluid version of its own combat, where subsequent attacks are a bit faster, changing directions for blocking is very quick, there's kicking, etc. I can safely take on 2-3 guys at once right now with just a crappy axe, but if I haven't eaten anything I'm probably going to get crumped because they all attack me at once.

Also, it's buggy as hell. The first person I talked to, a town guard: I started picking his dialogue choices for him halfway through the conversation. I can look past this and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ voices individually because IIRC you can just turn them off, but that doesn't fix the broken text. A broken, emotionless read of broken text will sound substantially worse than just bad voice acting or bad writing on its own, but even a VA could improvise to make a sentence sound like it's grammatically correct, and the game suffers from looking like its vibe-coded and cheaply and lazily made because of it.

From a more intentional and possibly permenant standpoint, I don't really think gathering needs to be as mind-numbing as it is. Picking up logs feels VERY slow. It makes the time before you get more workers, at least, kind of miserable. A person with less time than me would probably drop the game and refund at that point, but I was celebrating a family occasion, and I left the game open well past the window.

I WOULD probably advise against buying this game unless it was on sale, but I got it on sale. It feels a little vibe-coded and I absolutely wouldn't pay 30$ for this.

I bought this game because I was really hoping it would scratch the itch for a co-op M&B, if I'm being honest. Perhaps that is an assumption on my end, but it's still kind of janky and a bit disappointing for what it is as the sum of its parts. I think it has potential but it needs work from people who really know what they're doing. If the studio is small, getting even amateur voice actors and someone to proof-read your writing would REALLY go a long way.\t\t\t\t\t

Chock full of bugs, I bought it to play with friends but..... this ♥♥♥♥ is NOT WORTH $30

Have had stuff glitch out of inventory only to pop up later.

Half the time enemies bug out where they look like they're riding an invisible donkey with their arms and legs up; you can't see what attacks they're making and it's just SO DUMB THAT SOMEONE WOULD CHARGE $30 FOR A GAME WITH THAT KIND OF BUG IN IT.

Dumb of me to assume at that price it would be less garbage, that and with the homies playing I figured it would be half decent..... but hey, they got it in sale.

Please for the love of god, add a parry or some kind of counter attack to add some spice into this dull ass combat; they're doing mount and blade style melee fighting..... that game came out 18 ♥♥♥♥♥♥ YEARS AGO..... can we get a parry/counter?!?

ALSO! WHY THE ♥♥♥♥ CAN'T I UP MY AGILITY BY.... idk.... RUNNING?!?! I have to use a bow to get my stats up in Agility?!? That makes NO ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sense.

Enemy AI is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crusty; run far enough they de-aggro, which doesn't take going far, they'll tear off together in a mob to go group shank a wolf that ran by while you were fighting.

The difficulty scaling isn't a matter of making the AI more skilled so much as just giving them more health and more damage..... which make sense since they're using a melee fighting design used way back in 2008... almost 20 years ago.

DO NOT PAY FULL PRICE FOR THIS GARBAGE

\n\t\t\t\t\tBellwright has a really strong foundation and is already a very good game. There is a lot here that I genuinely enjoy, and more importantly, there is still a huge amount of potential to expand on what is already there.

The two areas that currently need the most work in my opinion are quality-of-life features and pacing.

As your settlement grows, some parts of the game become increasingly dependent on micromanagement. Equipment management, worker priorities, storage, logistics and moving resources between settlements could all use more automation and better control. Some systems could also be explained more clearly, so that players better understand why villagers behave the way they do.

The pacing also feels somewhat uneven. At certain points progression can feel very slow, while at others several new systems and upgrades arrive in relatively quick succession. A smoother progression curve would make building up your settlement feel more natural.

One feature I would especially love to see is a proper animal taming and domestication system that is integrated into the economy and settlement gameplay.

For example:

Wild horses could be captured and domesticated. Horses could be used for transportation or to drag logs. Oxen could help work larger fields or pull heavy carts. Guard dogs could help defend settlements, hunting dogs could assist hunters, and even falconry could be used for hunting rabbits and other small animals.

There is a lot of potential here to make animals an actual part of the settlement economy rather than simply another resource.

I would also like weather and seasons to have a greater impact on gameplay. Cold weather, rain and harsh winters could affect survival. Illness, exposure and hypothermia could add another layer to preparation and settlement management, as long as these mechanics are designed around meaningful decisions rather than simply adding more repetitive maintenance.

Bellwright already has the systems and foundation for something much bigger. There are so many directions in which the game could be expanded without changing what makes it good in the first place.

Please keep building on it.

And if large expansions eventually require paid DLC, I would personally be completely fine with that. Meaningful expansions to settlement management, animals, warfare, economy or the world would absolutely be worth paying for.

There is a genuinely great game here, and I hope it continues to grow.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI got lost in this game. The always moving world, every npc having different stats and stat levels. Gets interesting choosing who to bring into your settlement based on what your wanting skill wise. The building is rewarding and the combat is basic in ways but you have to actually pay attention to deflect and an attack so the basic just works well. Once battles get bigger its great working with the guys you armed and prepped. Starting the village feels like forward pace and gets very fun once it gets going.
We need more games like this, there is much thought and detail put in to the feel of everything.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis game is still so full of bugs, it is literally unplayable. We had T3 buildings, almost all research and about 58 people. Still we had our buttocks firmly proddled by brigands, our leather armour-wearing hunters were regularely killed by wolves, and summoned armies were stuck on something or other every second time you pointed them to a direction. I will not recommend this game to my worst enemy (even that cheatin' SOB who cheated on my mum for 8 years).
Play this at your own risk and depending on your mental health. Of which you will have less after playing this buggy bug-dumpster.\t\t\t\t\t
