\n\t\t\t\t\tARC Raiders, much like The Finals before it, is a game fighting against itself.

Embark has proven that they know how to make engaging worlds with satisfying gameplay, and they have that in spades. Where they seem to struggle is designing systems that don't actively push you away from engaging with the mechanics they've created.

They did this in The Finals, creating a ton of interesting gameplay choices with its items, weapons, and classes, only to pair them with such aggressive matchmaking that even in unranked modes, you'd be hard-pressed to use anything but the most optimal combinations.

In ARC Raiders, they've fallen into a similar design trap. The world is incredible, the gameplay loop is fun, and the ARC themselves are some of the more interesting enemies I've seen in quite some time. Upon release, the game was lauded for having a PvPvE environment where the E part is fun, unlike say Scavs from Tarkov.

So what's the issue?

To put it plainly, there often isn't much reason to engage with the PvE. Bosses require significant amounts of ammunition, healing, durability, time, and often some of your best gear. But because this is a PvPvE game, you have another option: wait for someone else to start fighting the boss, then kill them and take their weapons and loot, often a better return than just killing the boss in the first place.

So why go through a difficult, lengthy boss fight when you can use third-person peeking (yes, in a PvP game) to get the drop on someone who's already half-dead and has spent all of their resources doing the difficult part for you?

Once again, Embark has created a gameplay loop in which the game's design actively discourages you from participating in the content they've built. The problem isn't that PvP exists, it's that the incentives make exploiting someone else's engagement with the PvE more attractive than engaging with it yourself.

Because you're discouraged from engaging with the exceptional PvE gameplay in favor of the mediocre PvP gameplay (again, third-person peeking), the game ends up being less than the sum of its parts. PvPvE is a balancing act, and it's one that ARC just can't seem to get right.

Embark really knows how to make a game at their core. I just hope they eventually stop shooting themselves in the foot before this one dies completely.\t\t\t\t\t

I have 187 hours in ARC Raiders after buying it on June 12, 2026. I didn't casually play this game—I no-lifed it because I genuinely believed it had the potential to become my next 1,000-hour game. That's what makes this review so frustrating to write.

At its core, ARC Raiders is one of the most immersive extraction shooters I've played. Think Escape from Tarkov with a bit of Destiny and Helldivers mixed in. The gunplay is phenomenal, movement feels smooth and responsive, the lore is interesting, the AI is challenging without feeling unfair once you learn the mechanics, and discovering new blueprints and crafting equipment is incredibly satisfying. The maps are well designed, dynamic world events keep raids fresh, and most of the community is surprisingly friendly and cooperative. The foundation of this game is outstanding.

Unfortunately, the developers keep getting in the way of their own game.

The biggest issue is matchmaking. Recent changes completely destroyed what made the community special. Friendly players, cooperative players, and backstabbing "rats" now feel like they're thrown into the same matchmaking pool. Instead of rewarding cooperation, the game constantly rewards betrayal. I went from being ratted a handful of times over my first 170+ hours to getting betrayed nearly every other match after the latest update. It's exhausting and completely changes the atmosphere of the game.

Unlimited free kits make this even worse. They allow players to risk absolutely nothing while killing fully geared players who spent hours earning their equipment. They show up at endgame events, wait for everyone else to do the hard work, then shoot people in the back and walk away with the rewards. The developers tried to address this by banning free kits from night raids, but that simply pushed the problem into every other mode instead of fixing it.

Beyond matchmaking, the game is filled with frustrating quality-of-life problems. Inventory management is honestly one of the worst I've experienced. I have easily spent 20-40 of my 187 hours just organizing my stash because there isn't enough storage space, there are too many crafting materials to keep track of, no item locking system to prevent accidental selling or recycling, and no bulk recycling or selling options. These are basic features that should already exist.

Technical issues don't help either. I encounter game-breaking bugs almost daily, from ADS glitches requiring a full restart to visual, audio, and gameplay bugs. Network performance is also surprisingly poor. My friends and I all have solid internet connections, yet we constantly experience lag, rubberbanding, and connection issues.

Balancing is another recurring frustration. Instead of bringing weaker weapons up, the developers repeatedly nerf everything else. Attachments often come with bizarre durability penalties that make little sense, and weapon durability itself feels overly punishing for some guns.

Another baffling design choice is joining raids that are already 10-15 minutes in progress. The best loot has already been taken, objectives are already completed, and you're left running across an empty map hoping to salvage something. At one point I had 12 raids in a row where I spawned into matches that were already halfway over.

What hurts most is that none of these problems come from the core gameplay. The actual gameplay is fantastic. The shooting, movement, atmosphere, PvE encounters, exploration, progression, and world design are all excellent. The frustration comes almost entirely from avoidable design decisions and updates that consistently seem to create bigger problems than they solve.

I wanted this to be my next 1,000-hour game. Instead, after 187 hours, I'm stepping away until the matchmaking, free kit system, and overall balance are seriously reworked.

ARC Raiders has lightning in a bottle. It just feels like every major update moves it further away from what made it special in the first place.

**Verdict:** Incredible foundation. Frustrating execution. I'll happily come back if these systems are fixed, but in its current state I can't recommend it.

This game used to be brilliant. Genuinely addictive. I absolutely loved the mix of PvP and PvE, the challenges, the tension of extracting, building up your gear and never quite knowing what was going to happen when you dropped into a raid. It had something special.

Unfortunately, that game feels like it has disappeared.

ARC Raiders has gone downhill so badly that I honestly struggle to recommend it anymore. Lobbies feel emptier, matchmaking can take forever, and cheating has become so common that some sessions feel virtually pointless. Whether it’s a lack of enforcement or simply not enough being done, from a player's perspective it feels like Embark has completely lost control of it.

Then there’s the gear system. They keep talking about reducing “gear fear”, but instead they’ve gone so far the other way that gear barely means anything anymore. Free kits everywhere, completely mismatched loadouts and very little sense of progression or achievement. At the same time, actually grinding for the materials you need can be painfully slow. It somehow manages to make gear feel both worthless and tedious to obtain.

The bigger problem is that the game has completely lost its identity.

Embark seems determined to please every possible type of player, and in doing so they’re pleasing nobody. ARC Raiders cannot survive pretending it is some deep PvE experience. It isn't. There isn't enough story, meaningful mission progression or endgame PvE content for that. You aren't working towards some huge conclusion. There isn't a compelling campaign. You're essentially repeating the same loop over and over again.

The PvP is what gave that loop its excitement.

So where are the clans? Where is the meaningful competitive progression? Where are the systems that give long-term players a reason to keep logging in? Where is the evolving endgame?

Instead, we seem to keep getting slightly different versions of the same content.

And from what I've heard about the October update, it sounds like more of exactly the same. More content layered onto a fundamentally stale gameplay loop isn't going to fix the problem.

One of the most frustrating things is that players have repeatedly asked for a proper PvE option where they could gear up, gather materials and then take that equipment back into the main game. Apparently that couldn't be done — yet a PvE implementation can be considered for the Chinese market. That tells you everything about how disconnected the direction of this game has become from the community that actually supported it.

Whoever is ultimately directing ARC Raiders needs to seriously reconsider what this game is supposed to be, because right now it genuinely feels like the people making the big decisions either don't play their own game or simply aren't listening to the people who do.

A year ago, I would have recommended ARC Raiders without hesitation.

Today? Don't waste your money.

There are better games competing for your time, and ARC Raiders currently gives you very little reason to keep coming back. The gameplay loop is stale, cheating destroys far too many matches, progression feels increasingly meaningless and the game has no clear long-term identity.

To take something that had this much potential, this much atmosphere and such an addictive core gameplay loop and drop the ball this badly is genuinely impressive.

\n\t\t\t\t\tARC Raiders was just about everything I could hope for at launch.

I adore it's art style and the layout and design of the maps. I also kept the music on - something I turn off is almost every other game.

I am probably the exact type of player they want too - I like a bit of PvE on some days and a bit of PvP on others so bringing them together gives me the chance to play passive or partake in some head-to-head stuff and the variety of maps gave me more passive options and more aggressive options to suit also.

I've stopped playing and uninstalled now and I suspect that I'm unlikely to come back unless something changes.

Here's some feedback why, on the off chance it's constructive.


1. Game-loop.

As I said, I love the PvE elements but, having done the expedition twice, I can't really find the motivation to go through the same missions again. I appreciate a few get tagged on every cycle but it's not really that exciting to grind them all over for 5 new side-missions.

What I think should have occurred is that you should have had a games-master style storyteller and introduced a whole story of new missions each cycle. After all said and done, most of it was relatively small stuff and the cut scenes were few enough that I do think you could have put resources onto it.


2. PvP needed more purpose

The PvP element to this game is almost entirely about betrayal rather than as a combat sport - the problem with this is that there are better battle royale games out there or even more lore logical extraction games that aren't trying to masquerade as a community saving mankind with a wholesome vibe.

The net effect of this, in my opinion is that the people who love it most are people who enjoying ruining other people's fun. Now, I'm not here to criticise how people choose to play games but it's not difficult to see why some people left the game because of this.

My constructive suggestion has been the same I've put on feedback forms - give elevated status to PvP'ers in lobbies - send out radio communications that there's a "rat in field - be careful Raiders" and if they survive to the end, reward the PvP'ers with something. In doing so, you'll add reward for the playstyle and also allow for other players to engage defensively or exfil to avoid it. It may be an imperfect solution, but it's more dynamic.


3. The community PvP versus PvE war.

This became so tiresome to be around and it's never going to go away.

I've never felt the solution is PvE only lobbies or PvP only lobbies - these things have been tried in lots of other games and generally the currently solution is quite good, actually.

When I've played extended periods as PvE only, I've nearly always ended up in incredibly friendly lobbies with passive mindsets. When I've really engaged in PvP, I've ended up in lobbies with open warfare. I conclude from this that people who whine about this are either in incredibly unfortunate locations (lack of servers) or they're plain lying to themselves about how peaceful they are (or lying to you).

Even so, it's not really on them to solve the problem - they're just players trying to enjoy the sandbox the way it was left.

I don't have a fully formed solution to this, but there has to be a more visual or informed way to make these differing styles of play not just matter, but align these people's expectations.


4. The shifted development cycle

It would appear to me that you've shifted the development cycle to actually address some of the thoughts and opinions I have, actually, but, in this fast-moving world and with how little trust there is in developers, this is actually the opposite of my expectation.

Embark made a lot of money when this exploded - supposedly exploding way more than they had anticipated and so in my mind, you lean into that and you get take your shot.

Instead, it would appear that the resources aren't there to scale like that or you've chosen to slow things down to bring greater quality. In a live-service game, that seems like a commitment to conservatism and accepting a much smaller player base in the long-term.


Summary

In summary, I want to say thank you to Embark and the developers for the over 300 hours of fun I had. I definitely got my money's worth and I think within that kind of time frame it's a brilliant, brilliant game. It was only the repeatability that really ended my run on it but for anyone who hasn't played it and doesn't have any qualms with betrayed, danger and risk, then I think it will be a lot of fun.

\n\t\t\t\t\tWell, as much as I hate to write this review, I can't recommend the game at its current state.

To start off, the community is literally doomed, the game has lost around 90% of its player count. Now, how does that affect the game? Let me explain.

You see, back when the game launched, there was a lot of hype and talk about Arc Raiders, because it was truly a special experience. As a player, you could never really know who you might run into: whether the person was a casual player who wanted to team up and uncover ARC's mysteries, or a die-hard PvP enjoyer. That uncertainty was one of the things that made Arc Raiders special in the first place.

As time went on, the community got split up by something called "aggression-based matchmaking," a system designed to make sure players who seek PvE end up in "PvE lobbies," while players who seek PvP end up in "PVP lobbies." Because of that, you now basically have to "choose" a playstyle to reach your goals: want to do quests and farm ARC for workbenches or projects? Go be a PvE player. Want to take other players' loot and hunt them down for fun? Go be a PvP player.

This system doesn't sound bad on paper, right? Every player gets a lobby that matches their playstyle. Well, not quite. Because the community got split into two separate sides, both sides ended up worse off, not better.

I'm a mixed playstyle player myself, I enjoy both sides of the game, and honestly that's exactly why this split bothers me so much. Neither side feels fully rewarding right now.

On the PvE side: progression feels painfully slow. New projects, the main thing that gives PvE players a real long-term goal, only show up once in a while. You can spend hours doing quests and grinding ARC kills, and still be left waiting for the next project to actually drop. It just doesn't feel like there's enough consistently to chase. And in my opinion, the rewards you actually get from those projects aren't that good either, I'm not the only one who thinks so, from what I've seen a good chunk of the community feels the same way about it.

On top of that, the Expedition system kind of sucks too. The only reason it's even worth doing, in my opinion, is the 5 skill points, some extra stash space, and the repair percentage buff, the repair buff being my main reason honestly. Everything else about it barely feels worth the trouble. And what makes it worse is that once you start an Expedition, you can't skip it, you're locked in and have to keep starting over again and again, or your progress and buffs just reset. That's especially painful in the game's current state, where you're already short on reasons to keep playing in the first place.

On the PvP side: things aren't much better. A huge chunk of the players you run into are using free kits, meaning there's barely any risk on their end while you're the one putting your actual loot on the line. On top of that, cheaters are still a real problem. To be fair to Embark, they have been trying to do something about it: they've been testing map conditions that affect free kit availability, and they rolled out Denuvo Anti-Cheat alongside their existing Easy Anti-Cheat and Anybrain ML-based detection to try to catch cheaters earlier. It's a step in the right direction, but from where I'm standing, it still isn't enough to fix how the PvP side actually feels to play.

And then there's Stella Montis, the map everyone knows as the PvP map. For some reason, every time my friends and I decide to risk our good loot and queue into a Night Raid there, that's exactly when things go wrong. We get picked off by campers or cheaters, and to make it worse, there's no hatch key available to fall back on for a safer extraction. So if the fight goes bad, we're stuck fighting our way out through the front door with everyone else.

And if we instead queue into a regular match to avoid that? It barely helps. Almost everyone we run into is still using free kits, and on top of that, the match itself frequently spawns us in dark, Night Raid-like conditions anyway, so we end up dealing with the same visibility problems either way.

Now, I want to be clear about one thing: I don't want Embark to rush out updates just to fill the silence. Rushed content usually means more bugs and half-baked features, and that's not what I'm asking for. But there does need to be a little bit more happening between these long update windows. Right now it just feels like too much dead time where both sides of the community are left waiting, one side for content, the other for the game to actually feel fair.

Until PvE gets more consistent things to work toward, and PvP actually deals with free kits and cheaters in a way that holds up, I can't recommend Arc Raiders in its current state.\t\t\t\t\t

Instead of focusing on fighting cheaters, they keep releasing new skins. Players caught cheating often receive nothing more than a warning instead of a proper ban. I've submitted countless reports, and instead of restoring the items I lost after being killed by cheaters, all I get is a generic "thank you" message.

The AI is also in a terrible state. Arks often behave unpredictably and sometimes even work against the player. As soon as you start killing them, the server keeps spawning more mobs that seem to target only you. On top of that, many Arks can spot and attack you through walls, yet these issues remain unaddressed.

The game has been out for quite a while, but instead of improving, it feels like every update introduces even more bugs. It seems the developers are far more interested in selling skins than fixing the core gameplay.

I've finally run out of patience. I can no longer recommend this game in its current state.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis game is an achievement. On release it dominated all of my available gaming hours. Along with a couple of friends we slayed some arc, died to some raiders, and everything in between. The tension is incredible, the PVE enemies are equally as deadly. One minute you could be on top of the world bopping arc like goombas and the next find yourself cornered without the proper situational awareness. Sound design helps keep your head on a swivel and is overall so well done. The loop is fantastic for bite-sized gaming sessions or an 8+ hour marathon.

The game is not without it's growing pains. I sympathize with people who have been wiped due to cheaters and they do exist. In my 300+ hours of game time, I have not yet had to deal with that. So I can't really comment on it. People will complain about their need for more content on a $40 game they've already sunk hundreds of hours into. But I prefer this pace of releases because it allows me to PLAY OTHER GAMES and come back to arc radiers 1-2 times a week to do some trials or participate in whatever live event is running.

There are videos on YouTube showing how many cheats are available and how blatant their use is. One even shows how to get a previously banned account unbanned. \n\t\t\t\t\tI loved this game for a while but its so infested with rats and cheaters now that its only playable in solo runs half the time. Developers don't listen to the fan base begging for PVE only modes and keep catering to the competitive and streamer gamers instead of the casual gamers that are the majority of their player base.

These rats don't even loot or hunt Arc they just hunt other players and cheese the system to get into more friendly lobbies to exploit for easy loot. Almost no one goes after the bosses any more because you get shot in the back the instant you engage with the boss battle or right after you kill a big arc and are low on resources the griefers rush in to gun you down.

And if you defend yourself you get stuck in more and more aggressive lobbies so the game rewards being a PoS and punishes you for playing how the developers said they intended the game which was PvE with some PvP elements.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI only played this game because I liked the idea of hunting large robotic drones. For a long time, I loved this game and I recommended it to my friends. I've gifted this came to 3 other people in the past and have bought many in app purchases.

However, the aggression based match making does not matter if its reset every now and then, allowing PVP Players to exploit this system and make it unenjoyable to PVE players.

I was really looking forward to playing this with my gf for example, but the match making in duos is so bad, she doesn't enjoy it at all. I'm going to play other games like Monster Hunter instead. Its a shame because the game is eye candy and its overall, fun. But the match making system is so broken it takes away the fun from people who actually want to hunt Arc. What is the point of releasing a PVP specific counter part like The Finals if you wont make Arc Raiders more in tune with PVE?\t\t\t\t\t

Right when they failed to deal with cheaters in a timely manner. It doesn't matter if you never run into a cheater. Pandoras box is open we all saw what cheaters do in these games and now every gunfight is dice toss in whether or not you can trust the other player to not be a cheater. Which is funny im pretty sure this was exactly what happened to The Finals comp.
PVE crowd could only be happy for so long with hunting the same arc over and over with lobbies heavily discouraged for shooting each other. So when the devs try to accommodate this crowd with the least effort possible you now get people jumping in front of each others gunfire trying to force the other player into annoying lobbies. Which is what all PVP lobbies are. They are annoying. Its near impossible to make meaningful progress when everything is tied to extracting properly and higher tier crafting components from the queen and matriarch require a decent amount of teamwork in order to properly loot them. This is genuinely no joke impossible to do when the entire lobby is gunning for each other.

Rule of advise to extraction shooters in the future, Pick a lane. You can't have this PVP environment when you tie progression to a PVE playstyle.\t\t\t\t\t

The game:
The game is a PvEvP extraction shooter, first and foremost. The game is meant to be you versus the Arc, and the social/violent interactions with other Raiders. How you play is up to you, but you cannot guarantee that someone who helped you out won't stab you in the back at the end. Always remember this is also a PvP enabled game.

=========
The "types of lobbies"
=========

According to Embark, there's an ABMM (aggression based match-making) where the servers track your playstyles over an unknown number of games and tracks your aggression level based on those games. These are split into 3 different categories - PvE, Mixed, and PvP.

PvP - You've been naughty, and Santa has put you into the bloodshed lobbies. The PvP lobbies speak for themselves, it is nothing but hostility and murder. Bring your gear (or don't) into these lobbies and get into fights. Loot other players for their goodies. Remember, participating in fights in these lobbies will count towards the aggression. (This is an important part of the review down below, please read it)

Mixed - You may have had to shoot someone down in self defense, or maybe you're starting to turn to the dark side. These lobbies are mixed with people who are either trying to get into PvP lobbies, people trying to get OUT of them, or people who were in an unfortunate accident of killing other people. Oops. Either way, THIS is how the game started. The uncertainty of the motive of any player is high, and the chances of you getting stabbed in the back are pretty good here. Watch yourself, and never get comfortable. You never know if someone is waiting at an extraction point or a dark area looking to kill you for your loot.

PvE - Were you mostly salvaging and shooting Arc, avoiding players? Did you get shot and die but never return fire? You're in what people call PvE servers. These servers are full of friendly interactions and wholesome moments. You see people in videos leaving with 10-20 others in an elevator? It was here. These are mostly the good times of going through and getting loot. That said, people have been known to be PvP heavy and then go through an hour or two worth of matches just to get here, and then start killing everyone. Remember, (as of writing this) there are no 100% PvE matches, no guaranteed safety. Each match has a possibility of you getting merc'ed by another player.

The gameplay loop
==========

Your loop is simple: Get goods from topside on Earth, while avoiding/taking out Arc and attempting to return home from numerous exit points. Return to Speranza and use those good either to upgrade your own hideout, or to craft items for your future runs. Assuming you started after the expedition left, you have about 45-60 days before an expedition happens again.

The expedition is a voluntary account reset for your goods and your base. You do get permanent bonuses and stacking ones if you keep doing them though, so it's worth it if you are bored of having everything, or want to start fresh. On the other hand, not leaving lets you keep everything you have, while those who left won't have much of anything. You can, for a few days, have the upper hand on a lot of people so maybe you can take advantage of the situation? Up to you.

Arc Combat
==========

Combat is simple: Point gun, dump bullets into the target until you run out of gun juice or it's dead. Don't get hit. If you do, well hopefully you have a shield equipped. A shield comes in 3 tiers: Light, Medium, and Heavy. Light is the lightest and has no movement penalties but has the least amount of shields. As you go higher up the tier, you get more shields, but also go slower.

For weapons, you have a decent selection of guns that use light, medium, or heavy ammo. Light ammo is fast to shoot, like an SMG, but doesn't penetrate Arc armor much at all. Medium ammo is a bit slower and does a bit more damage and does a bit of penetration. Heavy ammo will do loads of damage, but are usually slower to fire like a 50BMG. There are some exceptions to this idea, but that's how it works mostly.

There are two special classes of weapons, and one of them basically not used for PvP at all. Energy weapons are legendary-class and require you taking down the largest raid boss type Arc there are and getting lucky to get a core to craft it. As for the other class, you have Launchers. These launch grenades that explode on impact with Arc, but do not explode when hitting anything (or anyone) else. Make the shots count!

PvP and the ugly side of things
==========

PvP is not always fun; maybe you have a good haul and someone wants your stuff. You need to defend yourself, or lose it all. Same as Arc combat, the same rules apply here. That said, there's always a social aspect of things where maybe you can talk your way out. In this section, it's too late. You have three options: Fight, run, or die.

Fighting is your best chance if you have the means, but being able to slip away is possible if you have the right tools or distractions at your disposal. Always be aware of your surroundings, and use 3rd person to peek around walls and corners without being seen. Knowledge is power, and knowing is half the battle. That is, until you run across certain people.

There are some people who have more knowledge than they should - Cheaters. This game is HEAVILY INFESTED with them in the PvP scene, and Embark has gone through some lengths to try and stop it, but what they've done doesn't stop them. These cheaters do not care, and have nothing but the intent to either get all the loot, or just to ruin your day. They WILL get banned, but they just make a new Steam account and go again. The consequences are so low, they have been shown to stream their games, also known as "rage cheaters" who will just do it openly. You stand no chance against them. They can see through walls, they can see your inventory, they can see where you're looking, and they can freeze your hitboxes. You moved behind a corner? Well, they don't think so, and you're dead, despite being around that corner.

I'm not advocating against PvP in any way, but it's absolutely worth noting whether or not you want to even lose your gear to them. Going into PvP is basically getting you into cheater territory and you are going to suffer. 1/4 games AT LEAST in PvP lobbies have a cheater, and often times, multiple. You'll also run into another issue - Duping. There have been multiple dupe exploits and cheats people have used to make copies of items over and over. The biggest thing you're going to see these days is what people call a "Godcat". This is a heavily duped and heavily used weapon - Light ammo, fully kitted with all the best mods to fire as fast as possible to drop someone in less than a half second. You don't stand a chance unless you know they're coming, are looking at their direction, and are using one yourself.

Overall conclusion
==========

If you enjoy socializing and looting, then stick with the PvE and play nice. You may lose your loot here or there, but 99% of the time you're going to have lobbies that are friendly and just fine.

If you like PvP and shooting, just leave. Don't get this. Play CoD or Battlefield. The cheaters are so rampant that you don't stand a chance. It's not worth it.

I'd rate this a 50%% if I could, but because the PvP side of things starts to blend in with the mixed lobbies and people ratting/abusing ABMM to get into the PvE lobbies and get easy loot, it affects PvE in a way that takes away from that experience. It sucks to be going around looting, and then you hear a Godcat kill off 3 people right behind you, and you know you're next.
