Look, this game can be REALLY fun - taking down massive machines is an absolute thrill. Hiding, sneaking about, scavenging, surviving against malevolent overlords - it's all the hallmarks of an enjoyable game...

Look, I get it, this game has PvE and PvP elements. I've never been opposed to testing your mettle against another player, but this isn't what's happening here. This isn't glorious combat - this is spineless backstabbing. People saying they're friendly and then shooting you in the back. People seeing you're using a Hullcracker and knowing you can't hurt another raider with that weapon. It's predatory nonsense, and it pulls me out of the excitement of the game every time without fail.
I want to drop in and TEAM UP with people to bring down the enemy. I don't want to have to listen for every footstep and think, "Oh boy, time to die".
And I know what comes with a complaint like this, and yes, it IS a skill issue. I will be the first to admit that I do not react as quickly as others, but I also don't WANT to. You can check my achievements if you want - you'll see that I have no achievements for taking down a fellow raider, because that's not what I want from this game.
I promise you, if they brought in a PvE only mode, their numbers would JUMP - because some of us just want to enjoy the area, the fight against the REAL enemies, and then extract without a rat waiting in the shadows.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

There’s this weird moment that keeps happening in the game. You run into someone, both of you hesitate, maybe do that little crouch or flashlight spam “truce” thing. No words, just an unspoken agreement: we’re not enemies right now. You move together for a bit, watch each other’s backs, maybe even survive something messy side by side.
And then… you shoot them.
Maybe it’s near extraction. Maybe you just didn’t want to risk it. Maybe you saw their loot and thought, why not?
It takes one second.
And yeah, you get the loot, you survive, technically you “win”… but it doesn’t feel good.
It feels off, you feel guilt.
Because for a few minutes, that wasn’t just “another raider.” It was someone who trusted you in a game that gives you zero reason to trust anyone. And you broke that for a small advantage. The game doesn’t punish you for it, but that guilt kinda sits in your head for a long time. You start thinking... was the loot worth the betrayal

For me, the co-operation between raiders feels truly beautiful specially when we work together to achieve a common objective like taking down the queen or matriarch, feels quite satisfying and pleasant.

No words, just an unspoken agreement: we’re not enemies right now. You move together for a bit, watch each other’s backs, maybe even survive something messy side by side.
And then… you shoot them.
Maybe it’s near extraction. Maybe you just didn’t want to risk it. Maybe you saw their loot and thought, why not?
It takes one second.
And yeah, you get the loot, you survive, technically you “win”… but it doesn’t feel good.
It feels off, you feel guilt.
Because for a few minutes, that wasn’t just “another raider.” It was someone who trusted you in a game that gives you zero reason to trust anyone. And you broke that for a small advantage. The game doesn’t punish you for it, but that guilt kinda sits in your head for a long time. You start thinking... was the loot worth the betrayal

Embark's pitch was "freedom to shape your playstyle" and "you decide what kind of Raider you are." True, in the way "choose your own adventure" is technically true if every page ends with you face-down at an extract.
For the first stretch, the game lived up to its trailer. The world is gorgeous, the ARC are the best AI enemies I've fought in years, and Speranza feels like a place worth coming home to, assuming you make it home.
Then the population learned the meta, and "you decide what kind of Raider you are" resolved to two roles: predator or grocery delivery. The meta is hide near extract, wait for someone who spent two hours building a kit, shoot them in the back, take it, repeat. The most lethal weapon in this game isn't a weapon. It's patience. The second most lethal is the word "friendly."
The game being hard is the best thing about it. The problem is that the design rewards the most parasitic playstyle in the genre and gives casual players almost no recourse:
1 - No PvE queue, despite six months of community pleading. Embark has heard. Embark has also moved on.
2- "Aggression-based" matchmaking, defeatable by anyone willing to take three peaceful walks before resuming their hobby.
3- Late spawns that drop you into a half-looted map with one real option: a brisk walk to the extract, where someone is already comfortable.
4- A "friendly lobby" system so easily exploited that "don't shoot" has become a punchline with a body count.
I run an Anvil and a Venator I never fire, because the only language some players understand is the silhouette of a sniper on someone's back. That is the level of social engineering a casual player has to do in this game just to walk to an extract. Half the time the silhouette just makes me a more interesting target.
If you build a kit in this game, you are not building it for yourself. Not for the ARC. Not for a fair fight. You are building it for whoever was willing to skip lunch and crouch behind a vending machine.
What makes it funnier, and eventually sadder, is that Embark knows. CEO Patrick Söderlund has been on record three separate times describing exactly the problem casual players keep raising. He's also been on record three separate times not fixing it.
In January, Söderlund told GamesBeat the studio had introduced a system to "matchmake based on how prone you are to PvP or PvE." Embark explicitly built segmentation into the game, then stopped short of a real PvE queue. Half a bridge, in other words, with a polite gesture toward the river.
A month later, the same CEO told IGN that players were gaming the system to slip into peaceful lobbies and prey on them, calling it "not the intent of the game's design." Three months on, the exploit is still here. The rats are still here. The fix is in a Jira ticket somewhere.
And earlier this month, Söderlund offered the most generous possible reading of his own product: a place where players come for connection because real-world connection is hard, suggesting Embark may have "accidentally created a place for people to connect." Half right. The accident is real. The connection is mostly two strangers pretending to be friends until one of them isn't. That isn't community. That's a parking-lot scam with a skill tree.
The Steam numbers say the same thing Embark seems to be ignoring. Overall: 85% positive. Last 30 days: 68%, Mixed. The community didn't forget how to play. It got tired.

Also, my overall favorite gun in the game is the Anvil. It’s great against arc AND players, it’s simple, and it’s cheap. Or at least it was cheap before this horrible patch… Now I have to repair the gun pretty much after every single raid. Every time I see a group of 3 flying arc, I’m wondering if it’s worth it to burn 10 - 15 durability just to take them down. That sucks. I don’t wanna think twice about whether or not I should disable a small group of small flying ARCs. I wanna pull the trigger.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Every update contained a new Arc, that wss basically a ripoff of an old Arc on steroids. PVE was not possible anymore, you destroyer an Arc in a group efford just to get killed by a 12 year old PVP player that desided to destroy everyones experice.

I have played this game with a PvE approach since the very beginning, and have enjoyed the games where I get friendly players and run around demolishing ARC all over the map and sharing resources. Knowing the supposed agression-based matchmaking, I've avoided shooting other players and have always brought defibs with me to give a helping hand. But here's where it all went so wrong. Ever since last update, I have started getting killed almost 1 out of 2 games by people flashing their flashlights, spamming don't shoot, and even saying they're friendly out loud through their mics, only to backstab me a few seconds later when I turn my back around and start running away.
First time it happened I thought "oh well, unlucky", but then every other game ended the same way. Bare in mind, I got the escape 100 times achievement, without getting into these rotten people/encounters even once. And let's not even mention duos or trios, which are a guaranteed shoot-on-sight PvP warzone wether you're just trying to play with your beginner friends or not.
This has pretty much ruined the experience for casual PvE players trying to play the game to relax, only to lose everything, (which is already harder to maintain with the new balance changes btw) to a rat with no moral compass, which represents a pretty good chunk of the playerbase. I understand having the option to choose between PvP and PvE, and have nothing against it. But when someone has over 100 hours of no agression (quite the opposite really) towards another raider, and still keeps on joining lobbies infested with people ratting for a living.
Please Embark, fix your current matchmaking or create a new system where players get to choose whether they want a PvE or PvP and punishing rats and liars accordingly. The game in it's current state, is unplayable.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

But I don't want to fight other players, and the PVP scene so DESPERATELY favors aggressors over anyone doing anything else. TTK is higher than many games and still so low that by the time I get a clue for where I'm being shot from, I'm already dead, medium shield or otherwise. I fully understand and respect that this is the agreed upon contract of a looter shooter... but embark is losing me as a player because one feature of their game makes every other feature of their game completely moot for me.
Maybe I'm just a soft coward who gets way to hurt inside when another human decides of their own volition to shoot at me, but I know I'm not alone in that. I hope I get to take this review down some day.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Embark really managed to polish a rough diamond into a turd and lose 80% of the player base in the process, fantastic job!
Fun in game stuff gets removed for no reason with each patch.
Got fun instruments which sync up? Yeah embark will make sure to mess that up completely by changing one of the instruments to sync up to a piano who no ones touches in game.
You got good at movement and got a favorite gun, devs say gfy and patch it so it becomes useless.
Weapons degrade faster now than you can blink an eye, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hordes of arc are rampaging your butthole when you try to fight a boss.
After multiple mediocre updates, the "big"update is also underwhelming to say the least.
