I'm honestly surprised at how fun it is and how satisfying the building and town management aspects are. The depth of content and size of the game world is probably much larger than you expect from this little known game.

Overview: I leave my games on, so this is like 60 hours too much, realistically ive put probably 25-35 hours into it, and that was without guides and with just a bit of my making my towns pretty. so it isnt a multi hundred hour games yet, but obviously will be. Just beat the last boss they have currently. Pretty damn good. Im amazed this is just kind of an unknown game. I wouldn't call it valheim tier yet, but its still a 8/10 for city-builder/survival-crafty game. Think some mishmash of medieval dynasty/stardew valley/valheim set in Rome. It works better than that sounds by a lot though. Artistically great, mechanically fun and fair. With enough difficulty to not be grueling or too grindy, but still require proper preparation before each new area.
Should you buy it?: It's city building elements are about 1/20th as complicated as medieval dynasty, but still are complex enough to enjoy and optimize for a casual enjoyer. The crafting is likewise simple and easy to use/understand. The RPG elements are also pretty easy but surprisingly fun. It has a kind of very light Diablo system with randomly generated items that have specific skills/stats that works nicely, and im sure could be exploited a lot if you're into that sort of thing. And the story is very light but well written. This is an Awesome un-windy game that doesn't require a PHD in stats, or civil engineering to enjoy, while still scratching the itch of those kinds of games.
Things i wish i knew before i started playing:
1: Beer is very easy to make, and makes gaining max loyalty very fast with your villagers. Which makes their skills level up faster. Later this will transition to Mead, which is also very easy to make and is great for gifts or Especially for the altar.
2: The skill tree is unceremoniously in the menu, make sure you find it. It is Not the Same as favor, that's for specific big upgrades with the Gods.
3: The manual mill is a massive boring time sink. Focus on getting the water mill AS SOON as possible.
4: Your auto turrets are great, but cant shoot through walls. So they need to go Outside your walls, and surrounded by little traps.
5: The god statues that you find that want you to do something *its always the same thing* you only need to do 1 per zone. They are for finding the boss of that biome. One in Grasslands *where you start* one in the desert, one in the volcano. *That last one I'm not sure of, as i just found the boss while exploring. and never saw one there*
6: Don't set your quarry, claypit or lumberjack to deposit Items in the material storage. Only set them to give resources. Or you will constantly be filled up with crappy first or second zone Special items that are just vendor trash anyways.
7. Recipes you find are for You to use. Do Not Gift them to the appropriate villager, just right click them from your inventory.
8. Use the sword and have a bow, the spear is not as good yet. It needs rebalanced.
9. Sacrifice is not worth it, it gives a Tiny amount, its only there to clear villagers with negative traits you dont want.
10. *Spoiler* when you get to the volcano, MAKE A BRONZE CART. They are immune to a lot of the fire damage.
Specific gripes/constructive criticism: The volcano in specific was a Big step up in difficulty, *and spoilers ahead* though i did go straight from copper to iron and never bothered with bronze. I did only discover the skill tree like... 3 hours before the end of current content? i wish that was a bit better showcased in the tutorial. also DO NOT set your world to large for single player. I did, and man it was Way too much running. Each zone has a pretty diverse mob set, and good overall vibe. They have plenty of biome specific resources too. I wish i had known that you needed a specific kind of tile for the volcano/desert biomes to be able to farm them, this also kind messes up the ability to make your town where there are good amounts of previous tier resources. Like you need clay and water 100% for any base to be self sufficient. And Desert/volcano do not have them, so unless you rush trading posts first, and are on a smaller map, making lots of bricks and even 1st tier buildings will be a pain in the ass, so i always made the base wherever there was water/clay and half into the new biome. Doesn't feel like you were supposed to do that tbh, and more like i cheesed it, where they want you to have multiple bases doing that tier of products and trading them around. But the trading posts are too late of an unlock for that to be viable tbh. Overall a very good game so far, and if they just add 2 or 3 more zones with a proper ending to the story then its a very solid game. Also instead of having to have a tier 3 altar, can we have an expensive portal we can place for farming/bosses? so the run back isnt 300 miles away. The game scratches some itch in between of Terraria and Graveyard Keeper. You start doing things, but at some point might delegate more and more to NPCs, which grow as your settlements do. Then, you can focus on exploration and actual settlement-crafting, with supply chains and, I bet, much more I've yet to find.
Oh, and of course, THE CARTS ARE SO FUN.

Right now my biggest complaint is how important garum is for many food recipes, yet it drops very rarely, and we can't fish, so we would have to buy fish from the merchant for quite a bit of money (for early game), making it pretty hard to make those recipes. Fishing would be a really good addition, and I know the dev has said they want to add it but it's not a priority. I think it should be more of a priority.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

At the beginning it can be a little slow while you set your 1st city everything is basically a manual grind as you find survivor and gather food for you and them and resources to build the city but it starts gaining momentum after the 1st boss which is pretty easy to find given its a type of hidden tutorial (go explore with just enough explain for you to figure it out on your own), the moment you start giving directions to you citizens to make the food and gather the resources for themselfs an start doing the quests and getting new builds to automate even more you are set to explore the world without the grind of the city because it pretty much can build it self with just putting some blueprints and putting the citizens to work and in time while you explore they will build it and maintain the food supply.
The exploration is simple but quite appealing but after a while you start finding dungeons and the interior start repeating (there should be more variety of interior) it seems all biomes suffer from this in its own way (ex: dungeons have biome style interiors so they vary from biome to biome but start repeating their own interiors on their respective biome after you found like 5 to 10 dungeons) but once in a while you find temples/crytps/goatmen outposts with different puzzles/traps and ways to navigate to figure it out which keeps it fresh and gives new loot.
The combat sistem is simple but with variations of melee/range/magic and some combat gear having 2 move tipes (press and hold) giving you a normal attack and a special attack (ex: power strikes/buffing armor with magic/ shooting 3 arrows in a cone) with the respective armors for which build you make that can be crafted for basic stats or found through exploration with some extra stats from the crafted ones. There are also trinkets which you have 2 slots to equip and capes for some extra passives for you build.
GENIUS recycling method for old gear/obsolete materials through making offer to the gods on the altar to gain their support and in return getting blessings, new buildings and some passive effects for you and your cities.
The mobs have some variety to them and each has is own behaviour interacting with you and the environment, zombies come at night and attack anything, small rats tend to flee from you big rats will attack you but if not noticing you will go hunt other creatures, goats will headbutt you and try to run away sometimes fails to hit you and hitting a rock or a tree and getting stunned in the process, clayman are chill guys wandering but when you get distracted they will try to steal your stuff mainly your carts full of resources.... bastards.
Overall i would give the game a 8/10. Not perfect and with somewhat few interiors, has 1 or 2 bugs but given its a pretty recent game and has a lot of interactive parts in it, i would expect much more bugs so good job developers. I bought my brother a copy 15 minutes into gameplay I was that excited because it captured that feeling I got when terraria first came out and we played it as kids. (While the vibe is there totally a different beast then Terraria.)
Romestead feels great to play, and it seems like there is loads of stuff to explore. Big ups for me is the civilzation building and management, I am excited to see how indepth it will go. My hopes is that I'll be able to one day deviate from my current set up with my bro and start a secondary civilization and have a massive trade route between us.
I am excited to play more of this and I really hope this game reaches its audience quickly and helps blow this game up. I want these developers to feel good about what they've got going on and too keep this alive and well, I see myself sinking serious hours into this game so I hope they go the distance. I got a little newborn so I better see some updates for atleast the next 10 years until we can play 😉
