What works:
The core of the game (items, cars, repairing the cars, guns, tools, buildings), the gunplay, the atmosphere, the graphics and the main quest. These are well done. The base is solid, but the game needs a lot of improvements to be good.
What's not good:
The Looting System:
- the gameplay loop has a big issue. It's like this: you go out scavange for 30 minutes, come back with a truck-full of items and spend 1 whole HOUR putting them in containers. Why? Because:
- the looting system is atrocious for a looting game where you open hundreds of containers to loot thousands of items. You have to press CTRL+Click on each item you want to pick from each container. There is no "Loot All" button. Terrible design. And CTRL+click on hundreds of items is just tiresome and unpleasant for the hand. We're talking thousands of items looted like that. I had to use "Auto Hot Key" to make up my own script and assign this function to the "E" key - so that i would just mouse-over items in containers and spam "E" to pick them up easy. YOU CANNOT REBIND THE "CTRL+MOUSE CLICK" function to another key in game which is a very questionable issue. Let people bind their own stuff! So the AHK script workaround was for me a necessity. Did I mention we are talking THOUSANDS of items you loot requiring to ctrl+click on each item to pick? Horror.

Not a good feeling.
The Quests:
- Aside from the main quest, all other quests consist in simply just tasks: "find me [certain item] bring it back to me". ALL of them are just that. "Find and fetch" TASKS, not quests. And each of these "quests" give very little XP.
- due to such low XP returns per quest - they just weren't worth doing at all. I would rather just mass-murder all the quest givers. Because each humanoid quest giver gave around 2500 XP? (i forgot the exact amount but it's huge) AND THEY ALL JUST RESPAWN later anyway, without any penalty or hate towards you. Meanwhile completing a "fetch" quest gives you 250 XP if i recall. Something very small. Anyway clearing a friendly humanoid camp you can get a fast 7500 XP for the price of a couple of bullets.
- Bottom line, no worthy XP and no depth of any kind in terms of quests. Which leads me to the final point:
Nothing to do Endgame:
- you reached endgame, completed the main questline (which, by the way, is DONE RIGHT and it's how at least some other quests should attempt to be). Now what? Well, without any huge spoilers, you have a few BUNKERS to visit! Sounds exciting? YUPP! Well, it's not. The bunkers are extremely anti climatic. Don't expect some fallout-type of vaults. Nope. Most are ONE SINGLE room with some loot in it. And the most dangerous one has 3 rooms packed with zombies and some crates of loot. There is literally NOTHING to do when the main quest is done.
I am of the opinion that the game was released in version 1.0 completely unbaked and literally still an Early Access Build. I enjoyed it but at the same time I disliked way too many aspects to recommend it in the current state. If the things i mentioned above change in time, then yes I recommend.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game seems to really struggle with what it is trying to be. It seems like a mix of Dayz, Project Zomboid and Days Gone. It tries to do what a lot of other games do but does it poorly.
There isn't much of a story in the game and most of the quests seem to be a fetch and deliver type of quest. Additionally, the balancing and placement of items doesn't really make much sense and cars decay way too fast for logic. Like driving down the roads without doing anything decays all parts and makes no sense really.
The fundamental issue with the game is that there isn't really rationale for exploring. The looting in the game doesn't really make sense; you will loot an entire warehouse and find hardly anything and then find a small house packed with loot; places that are well surrounded by zombies often have hardly anything worth fighting for to get inside so it begs the question why even bother?
Looting, after a while and opposed to a game like Project Zomboid, is far less rewarding and less needed than in other games. When taking out an entire bandit camp, you face bandits with indefinite ammo only to kill them and find like 4 pieces of ammo. You will go to a scrapyard and see a pile of tires and only find one useable one. After looting a few houses I was really all set in keeping my base safe. I never had to worry about being attacked and didn't really have a reason to develop any tech.
Another issue is that there seems to be a real lack of a reason to go out and explore, do quests and explore other than just doing it for doing it sake. The risks are high and the reward is low.
The NPCs as of now have no really purpose in the game other than staying in the background. You can't really form a community or have them join you or fight with them. They are just there and might have some trading options. None of them have any voices or the developers didn't seem to take the time to invest in hiring voice actors as you just read the minimal text that exists. Some will give you fetch and deliver quests but other than that, they are about as useful as a dead battery.
Building doesn't really make sense. You can only get certain items by looting from prescribed locations. Despite seeing some things in the background, you can't really loot them and have to go to the developer approved locations to find said items. I needed some scrap metal and saw a whole dame metal fence behind me. Guess what? Not able to loot. Shame. Sad really.
I never really found a reason to build other than make a base look good but there really wasn't a good enough threat to need to build. Building is clunky, takes a long time and requires a high amount of resources only to to be rewarded with a base that serves no real purpose because the zombie threat is pretty low.
All of this aside the game doesn't really have a good identity. This is by in large due to the fact that there is no sense of place in this game. There is no story being told. We are in an apocalypse and there are zombie everywhere and my character survived and that's about it. There are no characters that we care about. There is no storytelling that helps drive us to care about taking care of our character or other groups. Even in a game like state of decay which is a similar game but different in many ways there is a story being told by the characters in your community and it makes you care about them and want to see theme succeed. You are hurt when they don't make it or something bad happens. Do I even have a reason to care about anyone here?
There is a massive world here with all these places but not a reason to care or invest in the world.

Despite seeing some things in the background, you can't really loot them and have to go to the developer approved locations to find said items. I needed some scrap metal and saw a whole dame metal fence behind me. Guess what? Not able to loot. Shame. Sad really.
I never really found a reason to build other than make a base look good but there really wasn't a good enough threat to need to build. Building is clunky, takes a long time and requires a high amount of resources only to to be rewarded with a base that serves no real purpose because the zombie threat is pretty low.
All of this aside the game doesn't really have a good identity. This is by in large due to the fact that there is no sense of place in this game. There is no story being told. We are in an apocalypse and there are zombie everywhere and my character survived and that's about it. There are no characters that we care about. There is no storytelling that helps drive us to care about taking care of our character or other groups. Even in a game like state of decay which is a similar game but different in many ways there is a story being told by the characters in your community and it makes you care about them and want to see theme succeed. You are hurt when they don't make it or something bad happens. Do I even have a reason to care about anyone here?
There is a massive world here with all these places but not a reason to care or invest in the world.

Both State of Decays, all of the Dying Lights, 7 Days to Die, Days Gone, and my all-time favorite, Project Zomboid, which currently sits at just over 2,400 hours playtime. As you would expect, being a zombie survival game, HumanitZ has a lot in common with those games while being unique enough to be its own experience.
Some things that stand out for me in HumanitZ are the exploration, the different zombie types, the infection mechanic, the nicely detailed map, the skill trees and how they're unlocked, the base defense, base building and the sandbox customization. Most of all, I'm really enjoying the stealth aspect. Throwing rocks and setting up alarm clocks as distractions never gets old. Luring a horde into a bandit camp is glorious. Clearing areas with a knife and crossbow is really satisfying, especially knowing that if the wrong zombie sees you, he might alert the others and bring the whole town down on you.
A few criticisms. For one, I think the game needs to be harder. It's much too easy to break visual contact with the zombies. They don't pursue long enough. They need to be more relentless. The bandit AI is very rudimentary. They don't have any real sense of self preservation. They don't react to their dead friends. Melee attackers will rush you, even when you're shooting at them. Sometimes wounded bandits will attempt to flee, but for the most part, they don't feel human enough. Also, the musical score is lackluster. I like that it's atmospheric, which is the perfect choice for a zombie game, but it's much too repetitive. I had to turn it off.
There's tiny details that need fixed. One thing that irritates me probably more than it should is the split stack function. Having to click a tiny button thirty times just to grab some shotgun shells for a day trip is diabolical. A slider would be so much better. We need an option to unload firearms. We need an option to break down unwanted items into materials (gun parts from guns, scrap metal from tools, etc). I would really like to see more building/ decorating options just to give the base a more lived in, personal touch. The vehicle steering feels too stiff/ basic as well.
Overall, this game has me thinking about it while I'm at work, which is honestly the highest praise I can give any game. Few games draw me in the way this one has (about 100 hours in barely two weeks). It needs some polish. The camera takes some getting used to for sure. I have over 720 hours in HumanitZ. I didn't spend that much time in a game I hated. I genuinely enjoyed this game and invested a huge amount of time into it.
Unfortunately, my experience with Dera (Derek), particularly the way he handled my case and the moderation surrounding it, has completely changed my opinion of the game and its developers.
About one month ago, I was permanently banned from the HumanitZ Steam Community Hub for "Harassment of Community members." I disagreed with the decision, but I accepted the restriction.
Most importantly, I was still able to play the game normally after that ban. For an entire month, I continued playing HumanitZ without any problem. I was not banned from the game itself and could still play multiplayer.
Today, I contacted Derek on Discord specifically to discuss and ask for a review of my Steam Community ban. I was trying to resolve the situation and understand why the permanent Steam Community ban had been issued.
Instead, following that conversation, I was permanently banned from the game itself.
I can no longer play HumanitZ, INCLUDING ON PRIVATE SERVERS.
And this is where I have a serious problem with the punishment.
The original issue was related to communication on Steam. It was not an in-game cheating or gameplay violation. I had already been banned from the Steam Community for a month, and during that entire month I continued playing the game without causing any problems.
Then, when I finally contacted the developer to discuss the Steam ban and ask for it to be reviewed, the punishment was escalated to a permanent ban from the entire game.
If I broke the rules of the official Steam Community, ban me from the official community. If I broke the rules on an official server, ban me from the official servers. But permanently preventing me from playing a game I purchased — including private servers operated by other people — is, in my opinion, completely disproportionate.
Why this feels personal
What makes this situation particularly disturbing is that the decision now feels personal rather than disciplinary.
I had already been banned from the Steam Community for a month, and during that entire time I continued playing the game normally. There was apparently no reason to remove me from the game itself during that period.
Then I contacted Derek specifically to ask for my Steam Community ban to be reviewed. Shortly after that conversation, I was permanently banned from the entire game — INCLUDING ON PRIVATE SERVERS.
I cannot know exactly what was going through the developer's mind, but given the timing and the circumstances, it is very difficult not to feel that this was a personal escalation or retaliation for challenging the original decision.
If this was genuinely a moderation decision based on my behavior, I would expect a clear explanation of what new violation justified escalating a Steam Community ban into a permanent game-wide ban.
So far, I have not received an explanation that I consider proportionate to the punishment.
How criticism is handled
Another issue I've noticed is how criticism is handled. In my experience, Dera appears to be extremely sensitive to criticism, even when it concerns legitimate problems or opinions about the game.
A developer doesn't have to agree with criticism. But players should be able to criticize the game, question decisions, and express frustration without the situation escalating into increasingly severe punishments.
In my case, I had already been banned from the Steam Community. I then contacted the developer specifically to discuss that ban and ask for it to be reviewed. Instead of resolving the situation, I ended up permanently banned from the game itself.
That makes me question whether criticism and disagreement are actually welcome in this community.
The cheater reports
There is another part of this situation that makes the decision even more frustrating.
About two months ago, I submitted a report about players I believed were cheating, and I provided evidence with the report. I never received an answer from Dera. Instead, the ticket was simply deleted.
I'm not claiming that every player I reported was definitely cheating — I am saying that I took the time to report suspected cheating and provide evidence, and my report was deleted without an explanation.
From my perspective, this creates a very frustrating contrast: reports about suspected cheating were not addressed, while I have now been permanently removed from the entire multiplayer game over a Steam Community communication issue.
And again, I was able to continue playing normally for an entire month after my Steam Community ban.
I have spent 720+ hours playing this game. I purchased it with my own money and supported it for hundreds of hours. And apparently all of that can disappear with one decision from the people running the game.
The punishment is, in my opinion, far more severe than the behavior that supposedly justified it.
This isn't a review from someone who played HumanitZ for two hours and decided they didn't like it. I played for 720+ hours. I clearly wanted this game to succeed.
That's precisely why I'm writing this review.
The game may have potential, but I can no longer recommend supporting a game where a Steam Community dispute can ultimately result in losing access to the entire multiplayer game, INCLUDING PRIVATE SERVERS.
Think carefully before investing hundreds of hours into HumanitZ. Gameplay isn't the only thing you need to consider — the way the developers handle criticism, community disputes, and moderation matters too.

That makes me question whether criticism and disagreement are actually welcome in this community.
The cheater reports
There is another part of this situation that makes the decision even more frustrating.
About two months ago, I submitted a report about players I believed were cheating, and I provided evidence with the report. I never received an answer from Dera. Instead, the ticket was simply deleted.
I'm not claiming that every player I reported was definitely cheating — I am saying that I took the time to report suspected cheating and provide evidence, and my report was deleted without an explanation.
From my perspective, this creates a very frustrating contrast: reports about suspected cheating were not addressed, while I have now been permanently removed from the entire multiplayer game over a Steam Community communication issue.
And again, I was able to continue playing normally for an entire month after my Steam Community ban.
I have spent 720+ hours playing this game. I purchased it with my own money and supported it for hundreds of hours. And apparently all of that can disappear with one decision from the people running the game.
The punishment is, in my opinion, far more severe than the behavior that supposedly justified it.
This isn't a review from someone who played HumanitZ for two hours and decided they didn't like it. I played for 720+ hours. I clearly wanted this game to succeed.
That's precisely why I'm writing this review.
The game may have potential, but I can no longer recommend supporting a game where a Steam Community dispute can ultimately result in losing access to the entire multiplayer game, INCLUDING PRIVATE SERVERS.
Think carefully before investing hundreds of hours into HumanitZ. Gameplay isn't the only thing you need to consider — the way the developers handle criticism, community disputes, and moderation matters too.
720+ hours played.
Reported suspected cheaters with evidence — no action taken, and my report was deleted without explanation.
Steam Community banned a month ago, but continued playing normally.
Contacted the developer specifically to ask for that Steam ban to be reviewed.
Shortly afterward, permanently banned from the entire multiplayer game — INCLUDING ON PRIVATE SERVERS.
At this point, this no longer feels like ordinary moderation to me. It feels personal.
Good luck with your personal life Dera. Having such a difficult attitude toward criticism and disagreement must make things unnecessarily difficult.

The biggest issues I have with the game in it's current state are these;
- It's more of a sandbox game with seemingly added quests, but does not really have a story or player campaign. Although this is personal preference, having one thing in a game doesn't necesarily exlude the other. The focus seems to be on sandboxing and surviving, but it would help the game a lot if there was some major questline that feels like you are going through a compelling story with a nice conclusion. Which would then give you the option to keep playing in a sandbox environment, help others etc.
- Multiplayer on dedicated public servers is horridly frustrating and deadly. Driving a fully armored car is dangerous because for some reason the game increasingly wants to disconnect you while driving. When you disconnect like this the game boots you out of the car and places you potentially between a bunch of bandits or zeek who will kill you when you log back in; as the game does not allow you to exit while driving a car, it put's you outside the car. Sometimes the car has driven on and is far away, but there's been quite some cases where the car also becomes invisible.. which prevents the player from getting their car back; if they didn't get jumped and killed right away. This makes getting from a to b safe a bigger issue then actually performing a loot raid or trying to hand in some quest on the other side of the map.
- Patches are made to the game to fix issues. But quite a few of the patches the solution is worser than problems as it requires the server to fully 'wipe' (delete all progress and player characters). This seems to brutal, you've spent many hours setting up your base and growing, just for the server to totally wipe your progress. Although I understand that in some cases a wipe should be done, it should be made optional for the server owners and there should be controls made in the code so most of the game works even when upgraded and not wiping. If this is not possible, it just means the game code is not good and the game was released to soon to be able to allow stable updates. So my suggestion to the devs would be not to do any big updates (content wise) before fixing the core issues plagueing the game right now, one of them is making server wipes optional.
- Some of the patches introduced new issues, or caused issues with the game if the admin did not wipe.
- I have had some very weird case where my character ended up in limbo. He was somewhere in the game where he was not visible, and would not die, and could not open inventory, could not exit the game and also could not respawn by killing itself. In the end it basically meant the character was unplayable from that point.. it took server admin many hours to try to resolve the issue.
There's also a few problems with the skill tree progression/unlocking. Some remain locked as some of the requirements become stuck. For example the 'Loot PC' requirement for electrical engineer and I also was not able to make the game register any zeek kills when using mines. Which means you can not enjoy some of the extra skills if you want them. Since there is no way to reset this progress or rechose another profession, it basically means your character is bugged for life until chosing a new one on that server.
Right now there is not many players left on the server I play at, but the ones who are are terrified about the random disconnect problems and for myself it simply means it's not worth it anymore the frustration. I just tried to play again and got DC 2 times when driving toward a drop, while trying to run over a bandit and a few mins later while trying to drive over a bandit dog.. only because of luck and skill and the fact my car didn't go invisible I was able to survive. But instead of being able to go to Huddson to do a lootrun, I just drove back and logged out.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Multiplayer I played today on official servers. Laggy, buggy, annoying, you lose your stuff, you get logged out every few minutes. The balance between exploration, looting, crafting, building, hunting, fishing, survival and combat is great. I have all the freedom I want in-game and more. It's absolutely intuitive in both controls and gameplay and I was up and running 100% within 10 minutes of install. I cannot emphasize enough how satisfying it is to club the zeek's brains in with the plethora of melee weapons available to your player. Headshots with firearms--chef's kiss. The chainsaw? Yes! Proof that the devs love us. I was driving my G Wagon down the highway just mowing down zombies cackling at the 'thud's and splats. If you enjoy isometric games you're going to love this one. I hate to make the comparison, but it is very much like an isometric DayZ--but without the bugs and hate.

The map feels a bit small but then coming from PZ' all maps are small in comparison. The core game loop is satisfying, but having a 360 degree line of sight kind of break the immersion for me.

There is also crafting, cooking, farming, hunting, fishing, and different professions and skills to choose from.
You can craft armor for your vehicle, tame a horse to ride around, and get a pet dog to help you fight.
Combat feels pretty good once you get used to the camera. There is a good variety of zombies (and bandits).
Many different types of weapons to choose from and some of them can have attachments to make them better.
The quest system is mostly fetch quests but there are a lot of them if you are into that. Mostly its a sandbox game.
There are a few issues still, like a large lag spike when it auto saves.

I have found in my short two hours of exploring a couple of farms and a neighborhood that loot is neither plentiful nor scarce, zombies are around enough to be trouble but not yet a major concern, and the mechanics make sense.
The camera angle isn't my favorite, but seems to be something I could get used to. I do find it odd (not really an isometric guy) that I can only see like 20 feet in front of me, which in a zombie game I find visibility to be one of the more important aspects of survival.

The sad thing is the scaffolding here is incredible. They had something good going. They need to clean up the interactions in combat. Optimize performance. And do something about the weird skill trees and their achievements to unlock.

The number of weapons both melee and firearms is also considerable. Love what they have done so far and really looking forward to future enhancements. Only complaint is it's a bit too easy, I hope they add a LETHAL difficulty option soon.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
