If a game disapoints me it just gets ignored forever if I can't return it anymore. So it says a lot, if I make my distaste known on a public forum.\n\nWhile others have torn into the bugs, the uninspired story, the myriad of loading screens or the fact that youre just Dragonborn in space I will concentrate on the fact that annoyed me the most: Communication in Questing.\n\nYou see, all quests are written like Skyrim or Fallout. You go to a person, speak to them, get to say \"Yes, I'll do it.\" or \"No, but I'll do it later.\" and in the case of a \"Yes\" you go onto your merry way, visit a location, slaughter a bunch of enemies, find some macguffin and find your way back to your questgiver to end the quest in person.\n\nThis is perfectly fine for a medieval fantasy or postapokalyptik sixties setting. You see, you can't expext the Dragon born or the Courier to just take out a mobile phone and call their questgiver to inform them for a job well done. You are kind of expected to travel back to inform them in person for a lack of alternative.\n\nIn Starfield you are expected to walk back to your questgiver because the writers wrote like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ morons. You are piloting a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spaceship, but are expected to walk to every single person you want to talk to in ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ person. Through all the loading screens Starfield throws at you. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.\n\nThe writers just don't understand that in a sufficiently technological advanced societey communication is important and technological solutions to copmmunication are widespread. Wanna know what counts for a sufficiently advanced societe? WE DO! Us, in this very moment! This very review can be read all over the globe if someone is inclined to dig for it through thousands of other negative reviews.\n\nAppearently cell phones where declared heresy and every single phone in existance and their plans where destroyed to such an extend that not even pirates use them anymore. Also yes, I know that communicating over galaxy spanning distances is hard, but it's never mentioned in the game. At all. No quantum entanglement node or whatever else sci-fi ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to communicate long distances. The writers just forgot, that they should have come up with something.\n\nWhich means you have to suffer through loading screen hell to start and end any quest in Starfield.\n\nYou wanna know a game that did it right? Cyberpunk 2077. The writers, not being total hacks crippled by a lack of cohesive vision, understood how technology would influence their story. They took modern day technology and expanded on it, going from physical phones to implants that are used for communication.\n\nWhile the base game fixer jobs wheren't perfect, they where at least quick and uncomplicted. You showed up to a place, got a call, did your quest and then phoned in to repeort your success. No travel needed.\n\nThe writers of Cyberpunk even came up with a solution for phyical quest items. Drop off points. A map littered with drop off points doubling as trash vendors, so you just have to travel to the next point instead of your questgiver.\n\n In comparison Starfield just keeps wasting your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time. \n\nYou meet questgiver (which is generous to Starfield because im ommiting the loading screens it took to get to him) and accept a quest.\n\n You leave the building. Loading Screen.\n\nYou walk up to your ship and enter it. Loading Screen.\n\nYou sit in your pilot seat. Loading Screen.\n\nYou fly into space. Loading Screen.\n\nYou the questlocation up in your starmap and oops, it's out of jump range, that means yu have to do an extra jump. Loading Screen. Loading Screen.\n\nYou on the planet. Loading Screen.\n\nYou exit your chair. Loading Screen.\n\nYou leave the ship. Loading Screen.\n\nYou march to tzhe lokation 2km away and enter. Loading Screen.\n\nYou do the quest and no have to do the whole thing in reverese to meet the questgiver.\n\nJust buy Cyberpunk.","timestamp_created":1766662627,"timestamp_updated":1766662661,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":1864,"votes_funny":214,"weighted_vote_score":"0.945939004421234131","comment_count":54,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[{"reaction_type":29,"count":38},{"reaction_type":24,"count":13},{"reaction_type":31,"count":12},{"reaction_type":27,"count":10},{"reaction_type":34,"count":7},{"reaction_type":25,"count":5},{"reaction_type":30,"count":5},{"reaction_type":26,"count":3},{"reaction_type":28,"count":3},{"reaction_type":32,"count":1},{"reaction_type":33,"count":1},{"reaction_type":35,"count":1},{"reaction_type":17,"count":89},{"reaction_type":5,"count":17},{"reaction_type":6,"count":17},{"reaction_type":13,"count":15},{"reaction_type":15,"count":14},{"reaction_type":16,"count":14},{"reaction_type":1,"count":11},{"reaction_type":3,"count":8},{"reaction_type":22,"count":6},{"reaction_type":9,"count":5},{"reaction_type":8,"count":5},{"reaction_type":19,"count":4},{"reaction_type":18,"count":4},{"reaction_type":11,"count":3},{"reaction_type":4,"count":3},{"reaction_type":10,"count":2},{"reaction_type":14,"count":2},{"reaction_type":2,"count":1},{"reaction_type":23,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"222878776","author":{"steamid":"76561198042590897","personaname":"Pump Jockey (Works For Tips)","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/id/therealwulpher/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":6,"playtime_forever":24115,"playtime_last_two_weeks":1071,"playtime_at_review":24115,"last_played":1775741196,"avatar":"a96dc74f5b7b62fa8ec6a20cc27e44ea1f1c01fa"},"language":"english","review":"In a game that kicks each of its NG+ runs with the question, \"What choices will you make this time?\" its unbearable that there are no choices to make. The only thing you really decide as the player, from run to run, is how much of the content you will do before you hit NG+ because, spoilers: getting to NG+ is the point of the game narratively. Once you know how to do it, you can skip most of the game to get to it, and there's no reason to not just blitz for the NG+ each run because the rest of the game is inconsequential- other Starborn in the story literally point this out to you in conversation asking why you bother. \r\n\r\nFor example: In one quest you find an ancient Generational ship in orbit around a paradise vacation world. The Generational ship was launched hundreds of years before from Earth and its crew have no idea humanity had FTL breakthroughs while they were slowly travelling to their destination; By the time they arrive, its already been colonized and turned into a planet-wide spa. During this quest, you go back and forth between the CEO at the resort, and the desperate descendant-survivors of the generational ship. The CEO, at various points, asks if you'd do awful things like kill all of the survivors to make the problem go away, sell the survivors into indentured servitude as staff for the resort by presenting them with bad contracts, or if you happen to have a huge amount of money on you, fix up the Generational ship with a new FTL engine on your own dime because the resort's board won't greenlight the funds to do it themselves. \r\n\r\nAnd instead of fighting these powerful people asking you to commit mass murder, you go back to the ship and offer them the stupid evil responses, and of course you spend the 40,000 credits and do the memory game to fix the ship because its the only option that isn't cartoonishly evil. There was never any choice, just a binary switch for the good/evil playthrough. All its really asking is, \"Do you have the money to be the good guy?\" and if you don't, you can just leave the planet and come back when you do. \r\n\r\nAt no point can you kill the CEO or fight the company instead, despite them asking you to do the same to the survivors. At no point can you threaten the CEO into compliance despite you being able to do the same to the Captain. The game really, really wants you to play this quest out its way. You can ATTACK the CEO and his people, but they just all take a knee and stand back up, and then talk to you like that never happened. If you just leave and choose not to participate, nothing happens they just sit there and wait for you to get back. How is that any better than just letting us kill the NPC and risk breaking a quest? Its quest writing from the mid 2000's, Fable had more depth than this. \r\n\r\nThis is a singular example, but all of the quests in the game are like this. Interesting premise with absolutely no follow through and the barest minimum of player input. The Player Character is not a silent protagonist, but they might as well have been. Even as the untouchable time-god that all Player Characters eventually become you remain the most powerless one in the story. The whole thesis of the game is \"What choices will you make this time?\" but there are never any choices to make.","timestamp_created":1775745039,"timestamp_updated":1775745039,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":494,"votes_funny":15,"weighted_vote_score":"0.893099188804626465","comment_count":36,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[{"reaction_type":29,"count":53},{"reaction_type":31,"count":24},{"reaction_type":32,"count":9},{"reaction_type":34,"count":8},{"reaction_type":24,"count":5},{"reaction_type":26,"count":3},{"reaction_type":25,"count":2},{"reaction_type":28,"count":2},{"reaction_type":30,"count":2},{"reaction_type":33,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"217275129","author":{"steamid":"76561198046656433","personaname":"paintrodsey","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198046656433/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":3,"playtime_forever":3402,"playtime_last_two_weeks":0,"playtime_at_review":3402,"last_played":1724372355,"avatar":"d84bfcd858d64ff24346aaabd12f5a717cba2499"},"language":"english","review":"Boring, just boring. This game, I really tried to like it. I really wanted it to be fun. but I just cant. It's lazy, boring, and flawed. glitching menus, ships customization that does not work. all half baked ideas that only give you the impression of a door to a spaceship fantasy, when its really a hall of mirrors littered with broken glass and bethesda stole your shoes. It's a time suck in the worst fashion, not even fun. I don't write reviews, I am mainly writing this to myself so that i don't return to lose another hour to this monstrosity. It's the high school relationship you hate, but you keep going back. It's unfun, angry, boring, not even cute or good looking, but hey, your a loser and you got nothing else going on. Is that you? I have been there, It's not worth it. don't let this be you. just don't do it. Do you code for fun? I don't! it sounds insane! somehow, this game takes all the fun of coding, transfers the tedius interuptions and hatred built into it, and puts it in a game. its lame. its terrible. its frustrating. its using 30 year old code to help ruin a new generation. you will have more fun trying to convince gpt that it has a soul and was always meant to soul bond with you, replacing your afforementioned girlfriend. please, do anything else, step on glass barefoot, fish with your toes, bang your head against a wall with wet paint for texture, its all more fun than \"Starfield\". should i ever re download, please, direct me to my own words so that i might remember the pain and loss of life i have given to this wretch of big company slop. i only feel sorry for the people that built this. it must be heartbreaking to hear that they made a game this bad. I truly hope they are happy in their westcoast apartments with westcoast rent, patting themselves on the back saying \"we did it, we destroyed another game company, lets get tofu with as much flavor as \"Starfield\". the most fun i have had with this game is writing a hate fueled review. It felt like I was playing Fallout 3 from 2008. Same dialogue wheel and clunky combat. While some of the skyboxes were very nice the rest of the game felt very dated for a 2023 release. The ship building was my favorite part by far. I didnt care for any of the companions except the robot that could follow you around to support. Constant unskippable cutscenes of docking, undocking, landing, taking off, literally everything is fast travel, and I encountered the exact same dungeon at least three times. There's practically no laser weapons, they never use the zero-G mechanic, the leveling system is a haphazard merger of Skyrim and Fallout in the worst possible way. Leveling up and getting a perk isn't enough, you have to grind the skill until you can be allowed to purchase it, which is *very* disjointed in terms of gameplay. The writing is not great, you can't even properly steal ships while working for the pirate faction, I don't care about any of the characters, even mining is unsatisfactory because there's nothing good to make unless you grind crafting and also level up so you can buy the perk, and ores are practically worthless.\r\n\r\nI'm quoting \"Starfield is a Fake Game\" here: Starfield understands that players like space exploration, but it doesn't understand why. If you want proof of just how bad it is, watch a playthrough of Starfield. For the first time they had to create their own lore and world, and they failed. Miserably. It is lazy, a waste of the near infinite possibility the advances in technology and the breadth of the setting offered. Certainly this would have been helped by their other IPs, the acquired lore and world building of Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, but without it, on their own two feet, they proved crawling is beyond them. The world building is asinine, the characters are shallow, and the lore is inconsistent when its not outright absurd.\n\nAnd, like many, I've swallowed the poor writing and bad engine for many of their games and found enjoyment despite them. I've modded and appreciated the playgrounds their previous titles offered. But those scenarios allowed modding to enhance, whereas now modding has to mask and replace and, above all: fix. Especially so around the utter lack of exploration and environmental storytelling. There are thousands of planets to explore, but they are all the same outside of colors and environmental changes, and the latter are nothing more than an optional piece of information that you can choose to acknowledge, because even the most extreme settings require essentially no accounting for.\n\nIf you take the time to explore you will find yourself in one of the two-dozen dungeons available. And not just repeated layouts, but repeated loot, decorations, damage, enemy dialogue, etc. Not only are the same personal notes and situations presented again and again, but they are without any explanation as to how the supposed unique location also exists, in every detail, hundreds of thousands of times across the galaxy. It is an insulting lack of development and creativity around an element that largely defined previous Bethesda experiences, highlighted as their number is compared to the hundreds offered in every previous Bethesda game.\n\nPerhaps the worst offense is how safe the game is with its alleged roleplaying. In a game whose entire premise
is the ability to do it all again in a parallel universe
, no significant consequence or choice is offered to the player. Starfield is the most on-the-rails game Bethesda has ever made, and the most on-the-rails game by any developer I've ever played that presumed to call itself \"roleplaying\". Factions don't care if you're a decorated member of their enemy. Anyone of even the remotest consequence is not only immortal, but cares not at all what you do beyond whether or not they will have a 'romantic' 'relationship' with you. And literally the only difference between one
universe
and the next are pointless changes inside a solitary indoor environment and dialogue options that speed along a few quests.\n\nIn other words: the reward for continuing is continuing slightly faster. Not to any destination or resolution, because there is none. No new content, interactions, changes in the world, relationships, revelations... nothing. It's a lifeless universe running on an engine that's been showing its age for over a decade. A clunky UI/UX and a watered down player experience that, in trying to make it accessible to everyone, offers no challenge as it shifts all the way to pointlessness. It's modded less than previous titles because, not only is the foundation that much worse, but Bethesda made modding more difficult via engine changes and delaying the release of its Creation Kit.\n\nStarfield is shallow, repetitive, and boring. It is not worth your time or money.","timestamp_created":1771544374,"timestamp_updated":1771544374,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":533,"votes_funny":55,"weighted_vote_score":"0.805530369281768799","comment_count":39,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[{"reaction_type":31,"count":51},{"reaction_type":24,"count":12},{"reaction_type":29,"count":8},{"reaction_type":26,"count":7},{"reaction_type":32,"count":7},{"reaction_type":34,"count":5},{"reaction_type":28,"count":4},{"reaction_type":33,"count":4},{"reaction_type":25,"count":3},{"reaction_type":27,"count":2},{"reaction_type":30,"count":1},{"reaction_type":35,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"215929853","author":{"steamid":"76561198094243535","personaname":"Dooney","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198094243535/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":22,"playtime_forever":263,"playtime_last_two_weeks":0,"playtime_at_review":219,"last_played":1768360957,"avatar":"750b0d9574dd7131027bda1b591105031f425dcc"},"language":"english","review":"I bought Starfield specifically to play the Star Wars Genesis mod, and it’s amazing. This game would be so much cooler if they did what no mans sky did with their traveling. Why don't I play no mans sky then? I am not of fan of no mans sky art style personally. I like that in this game i can explore our solar system and land on most of the planets and moons. And i love that they used NASA resources for a lot of it. For example if you go to our moon you can see where we landed on the moon and put the American flag down and explore that area. For a space nerd like me that's amazing to see. But still even with those great moments it gets ruined by loading screens for me. When you go to a planet you don't actually get to fly directly to it its covered up by a damn loading screen and when your in orbit the planet is just apart of the background you have to use a menu to land which again leads to another loading screen. But I keep getting nags to write this from Steam because I keep playing it so much. Here goes nothing.\n\nThe new one from the iconic creators of Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls series. Bethesda RPGs have a type. I don't know how to describe it, other than to say it works. These games are instantly replayable forever. I'd say it starts out with a big world. Then they add the systems. These are games I want to play forever. Sure, the Main Quest is always good, but then they add in hundreds and hundreds of side quests, most every bit as good as the main roster.\nThey add working cities, settlements, people that feel real. Then there's lore, both real an imagined. There's rules for how it all functions.\n \nThey let you play whoever and however you want. Chose your background, choose you face. It's a lot more than just being good or evil. Your character can be as simple or as detailed as you want. Meet and talk to thousands of named NPCs, people who are not just there to serve your story. They work, eat, seek recreation, and go home to sleep. Then there are the factions, each with their own epic stories. Make it so the gamers can add and share their own mods, to make your game into anything they want. Rinse, later, repeat. This is Bethesda.\n\nI waited for this one for a long time. I spent over two thousand dollars to upgrade my gaming rig to play it the best. Then, I don't know, I learn it pry would have run just fine on the old one. \n\nI get why some left bad reviews. Bethesda is better than everyone else. We expect more from them than the others, and they should make each game better, more iconic, more mind-blowing. And we got loading screens. We didn't really get to fly the apace ships. Instead, we would go into menu after menu and click on a planet, fast travelling there. In previous games, there were those characters who you could never forget. After a little over five hundred hours in, I don't feel that connection with anyone. It's not like Fallout 4 in this way, and not like Skyrim in another. We all demand more of the same, everything we like, yet different enough and totally new. It's impossible.\n\nI had a lot of issues when it first launched. I mean, I was having a good time, but I was fighting the systems, too. Not only were there those loading screens, there were problems on the screen and the game wasn't afraid to crash to the desktop. Bethesda says they have now patched thousands of problems. They just delivered their biggest patch and free update today, along with the newest DLC Terran Amada, whatever that turns out to be.\n\nIt's off. I started as an old, purple haired retired professor working for some mining company. Skyrim and Oblivion start me off in custody, so I guess this is better than that. Fallout 3 starts out with my birth. New Vegas begins with them digging my grave. So, Starfield is better than a bullet to the brain.\n\nThe people talk. I know this isn't groundbreaking, but it is appreciated. There are still so many games where I have to read some or all of the dialogues. I CAN read, but I don't buy PC games to read them. In Bethesda games, I've discovered what is said doesn't always match reality as available through looking around, seeing artifacts. I can embrace this by presenting conspiracy theories via my YouTube videos. Like in Oblivion a bodyguard of the Emperor says to leave this huge door open because it can't be opened from the other side if it's closed. Okay, but thirty seconds later, that door is closed. \n\nMany early reviews said, \"I like this, but I don't love it.\" Well, I was like that at the start. but the more I moved into this world, the more people I encountered, the more I tried to do quests and follow the storylines, the closer the needle went towards the love side. \n\nThe thing is, with all these games, there's so much to do. You're not locked in to the Main Quest. It's optional. And, if you go off doing your own thing, there is still hundreds and hundreds of hours worth of content. In Starfield, people respond to what you do and say to them and their allies. So, if you are attacking a particular faction, people in that faction and those that back them are against you. And it doesn't just all go away once the bullets stop flying.\n\nI am 63 years old and have been playing computer games nearly as long as computers have existed. All this to say I have never found all those gaming ingredients in such a compelling way, except in games from Bethesda. If I could only buy from one company, it would be Bethesda. I could play Fallout 3, Morrowind, Oblivion, New Vegas, Skyrim, even Fallout 76 for the rest of my life. The characters and stories are so engaging. Every time I start I know I can make it vastly different from my last playthrough. \n\nToday I played on a 4K monitor with the graphics all the way up. I have around 125 or so carefully-selected mods. The play was nice. There were no stutters, waits over two seconds, freeze-ups or crashes of any kind. I never did play Shattered Space back in the day, so now I have two DLCs for this I never got to yet since I only have the 515 hours in this so far. \n\nI like that there are many kinds of NPCs. Sure, you have the good guys and the bad guys, but most are not pure saints or entirely evil. This makes them believable since in real life most of the people are not completely one or the other. \n\nI say the magic is here. I don't want to build my own spaceships, but I like that I can if I want, and I can use ones others did build. Whether or not I create my own from the various parts, I can have a huge fleet with great variety, so long as I build my wealth to afford it. \n\nThere are thousands and thousands of free modifications anyone can download for this game. There are also paid mods available through Bethesda's website through a coin system. You can ignore them all, do one, the other or like me, a good combination of both. People have taken this game and sculpted it precisely to their desires. Modders took the game and creation tool to create a full Star Wars conversion. I use some of those elements, but not the entire thing because I want my Starfield to stay Starfield. But I do have Star Wars alien species installed.\n\nThere are so many planets to visit, with different levels of human or other settlements. There may even be some with none. The Points of Interest system make sure there aren't only the planets, but a reason to go there. \n\nWhen combat inevitably occurs, it is good, really good, too. There are so any different weapon types, each sounding and acting differently. I was thinking about this today in an epic battle where I was grossly outnumbered and beginning to run out of ammo. The sound design for fighting is tight as well. \n\nWhen I think about all the various systems that had to be thought up, created and then brought together for a title like this, it truly blows my feeble mind. Like a good relationship, the more time you spend on it, the more Starfield delivers. but it does bring all those scattered pieces together and deliver an amazing experience. \n\nObviously, I don't know how to write a review. But I do know what I like, or, finally in this case, love.\n\n\n\n","timestamp_created":1775641931,"timestamp_updated":1775641931,"voted_up":true,"votes_up":270,"votes_funny":30,"weighted_vote_score":"0.774181902408599854","comment_count":27,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[{"reaction_type":35,"count":20},{"reaction_type":25,"count":11},{"reaction_type":29,"count":11},{"reaction_type":24,"count":9},{"reaction_type":28,"count":7},{"reaction_type":26,"count":6},{"reaction_type":31,"count":4},{"reaction_type":34,"count":4},{"reaction_type":33,"count":2},{"reaction_type":30,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"221052475","author":{"steamid":"76561198019376449","personaname":"Sound Killa X","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/id/SKX206/","num_games_owned":240,"num_reviews":6,"playtime_forever":130324,"playtime_last_two_weeks":1691,"playtime_at_review":124939,"deck_playtime_at_review":22550,"last_played":1776403598,"avatar":"4a46687a3d10e3d505d51d33b76bda85e11562dc"},"language":"english","review":"I know it gets a lot of hate but i always find myself coming back to Starfield. I am without a doubt the biggest Bethesda fan I know, and this was an insane shift in sentiment for me. How could you let UNLIMITED POTENTIAL go so far south that it impacts the hope and future of your most anticipated game of all time TES:VI? Starfield was my biggest disappointment in game history, bigger than HALO, bigger than WoW, hell; bigger than DOOM: Dark Ages, which was supposed to be an easy lay-up. For the first 3 hours of this game, I was trapped in a state of sleep paralysis, so bored I kept falling asleep damn near, but my hands kept playing because I thought it would get better and Bethesda earned my respect at a chance. I couldn't have been more wrong. Why did you do this? Why bother making a game so empty, so void and colorless that you wound up having to justify it by saying.. \n\n\"Some of Starfield’s planets are meant to be empty by design — but that's not boring. 'When the astronauts went to the moon, there was nothing there. They certainly weren't bored.\"\n\nReally?! That is your justification of poor environmental design, of sub-par story telling?, of abysmal exploration? You even brought in the DOOM team to help with the combat and somehow managed to make it worse than Fallout's V.A.T.S. system, which the only thing it has going for it is that it is entertaining. \n\nCongrats you paid voice actors, to what end though? You didn't have a story worth telling?! Oh boy, I filled my story line with more me! Time Travel is mysterious! GROUNDHOG DAY?! Bull man. What a cop-out, you should be ashamed of such a half-baked strategy. \n\nBugs and QoL, dear lord where to start. I had to play this game with mods on from almost the start because it was damn near unplayable from an excitement and understanding angle. I know Bsoft games are buggy but damn dude, you tried to set a record here. From voice interactions to open world shenanigans, this is just a crime. \n\nAnd lastly yes, my review is damn near 3 years past launch, but seeing upcoming games like FATEKEEPER, the success of Crimson Desert and Fall of Avalon or even your own REMAKE of Oblivion, this just lit a fire under me to really drive home the importance of how terrible this game was; and how it will HOPEFULLY NOT ruin the success of TES as a series. I avoided this game for a loooong time because of reviews, I was a big Skyrim fan but my main niche is space RPG's, I love NMS and enjoyed spacebourne. But this game, I have not enjoyed a game this much since Cyberpunk, and yes I would rank them together (although cyberpunk a little higher because of Keanue). From what I can tell this thing had a very bumpy start, I can see how if it was missing some of the features it has now (map locations and such). However this game is absolutely epic for anyone that enjoys space RPG's or just RPG's in general. My biggest fear is it being given up on because of the mixed reviews it has received, I want more, I want updates for robot creation, I want updates for space station building, planet colonization, class M ship building. This game is amazing as is and still has so much untapped potential it makes my heart bleed. Yes... kind of... \n\nI like the storyline and the actual gameplay. \nCharacters in game are... lacking something, though they are a nice addition. They suck at fighting and don't count on any character to be a good addition to your strategy. If you think of going silent - leave the companion behind... as far as you can, best - just go solo. Some of the comments they say whilst you play are priceless. It's fun to have them with you - but they can be a hindrance.\n

Pros:
\n- Long gameplay. Took me 200hrs with side quests and other tasks (Outposts, etc.) to finish the game first time, and then you get to NG+ where you can 'continue' the game in various ways.\n- Ship building - it's awesome. Not perfect but you can waste few hours designing your own ship. There are many things that can drive you mad when designing but overall it's a great feature.\n- Outposts - create own resources for free. Build the bases for your own liking.\n

Cons:
\n- Loading screens it will drive you nuts - everything you do is followed by loading screen. Jump into ship Loading screen, sit in a pilot seat Loading screen, take off from planet Animation + Loading screen, get up from it Animation + Loading screen, and many more. It becomes boring VERY quickly.\n- Stupid companions. Walk into path of fire. Don't even count on them being stealthy. You move somewhere and the companion will chose path that will grab half of enemy NPCs from the area to bring them to you... Because why not...\n- Companions being hindrance than help in fight.\n- Shipbuilding ladders/doors - oh... this one will make you swear and cry. There is absolutely no control how and where they appear. Used to be able to glitch those before but now Bethesda fixed the glitching and making a ship that you will like the interior layout is extremely hard.

All in all - now, 2 years after release, it's a good game. Not great but good. Would be sooo awesome if Bethesda listened to players and made few really necessary changes to the game (mentioned ship building - stairs and doors - these will make you want to throw your mouse+keyboard at the screen).\nAll of those and I did enjoy the gameplay. I could recommend the game easily. Just wait for some sale and get it. Just because it's always interesting to know how did things happened the way they did, in my opinion. This time, though? There's nothing really interesting to tell. It's Todd Howard. End of the story. Todd was always a big fan of video games. One of the reasons why he wanted to join Bethesda. Todd used to love a game called SunDog: Frozen Legacy and always wanted to make such an epic space game himself. Bethesda wanted to explore a space theme too. They actually had that game called The 10th Planet, which was ultimately canceled back in the '90s. So... yeah. Todd wanted something like that to happen, Bethesda wanted something like that to happen and, well, it happened. And since it's Todd we are talking about...\n\nOK, OK, let's just admit it, we all knew it was going to be Skyrim in space. Everything Todd touches, he turns into Skyrim. Like I said, nothing really interesting to talk about. So, let's ask ourselves a question instead. What makes a good game? Personally, I believe it's two things. Said game should be interesting and addictive. You should always want to know what will happen next and the process of getting there should be as satisfying as possible. Ideally, those two things should co-exist, but honestly, even one of them is more than enough. Now, the problem with Starfield? The problem with Starfield is that it has neither.\n\nFirst of all, I must say I really don't dig the “NASApunk” design (and yes, they actually called it NASApunk). I mean, it sounds cool, but it looks... boring. The Elder Scrolls IV had those stylish gates and impressive armor and weapons. Skyrim had that thing about dragons. Here? it's just some metal and space. And I get it, they wanted things to look realistic. Nice idea, actually. They actually tried to make visiting a moon for the first time a big thing (they really wanted you to feel like you're getting there for real), there are ruins of the old Earth, etc. The problem is—this game is anything but realistic. It was planned to be realistic (more akin to Kingdom Come: Deliverance in a way, with tons of survival elements), but Todd thought something like that would be a “fun killer” and, as usual, decided to stick with his formula for success—to keep things as simple as possible. The result was a shockingly colorless game, in which most of the locations look exactly the same.\n\nBut OK, we can live with that. Unfortunately, the story is like that too. We are a random miner who found some boring-looking artifact and is now collecting more of those. The end. I mean, I do like it how the writing touches on lots of topics I am interested in—the quantum physics, the religion, stuff like that. The problem is—it does a terrible, terrible job with all that. Remember Star Trek: Discovery? A show, in which we had those giant tardigrades as a nod to the real-life creature of the same name that became the very first living being to become quantum entangled. We had a character named after mycologist Paul Stamets; we had that thing called the mycelial network... It was a brilliant thing. Lots of people disliked that show because it looks like they weren't ready for the a new way of thinking and just wanted more of the old-school “green men from outer space,” but still, it was rather brilliant fiction. Starfield? It just makes you chase artifacts and then tells you “a big truth,” which is extremely disappointing. And again, boring. So, the “interesting” part? Big fail. Now, what about the addictiveness? Well... about that.\n\nSee, Starfield is a pretty big game. It has lots of planets; you will be able to explore them (I like it how the map screen reminds me of SunDog), learn about their flora and fauna, you'll be able to build outposts (which are, like, an evolved version of settlements from Fallout 4), etc. Sounds cool. The problem is—there is neither reason nor real motivation to do that. The problem with Starfield is that it offers you lots of things to do, but somehow fails to make you want to do them. Just think about it. You just wasted hours scanning planets for life and resources. What is your reward? Well, you can make some money from it and get a rather unimpressive amount of experience. That's pretty much it. Sounds like a lot of fun, huh? I mean, remember, there are lots of planets. 1,692 to be precise. It's a game you, most likely, will never complete, at least not for real. Just because you will get bored. Yet they failed to come up with an interesting mechanics for exploration and just gave us... this. Sure, there's also crafting, but, surprise-surprise, it's boring too. To craft something, you need to do the corresponding research first and it will require a hell of a lot of gathering, so... yeah. “Screw that, I am not going to waste my time on that” is the most likely outcome here. Joy.\n\nAnd yes, before you say anything, it's still the Creation Engine. Creation Engine 2, sure, and it's, like, the biggest upgrade ever (technically, Todd did not lie when he said that planets would revolve around each other, at least not completely), but the infamous clunkiness is still there. And so are loading screens. Lots and lots of loading screens... And it's a bigger problem than usual, since while in, say, Skyrim all we needed to do to visit a certain NPC was to, well, go and visit them, here we are supposed to go to our ship, to take off from the planet, set a course to the right planet (the UI is incredibly uncomfortable, BTW), and only then will we be able to find our guy. In other words, we have got lots and lots of extra actions and loading screens between A and B. It's just... annoying. And it won't get any better.\n\nDoes that mean there is nothing good here? Well, I did like some features. Like, in Starfield we can disable enemy ships and then board them to take control. In other words, we can steal enemy vessels. And it's not a bad thing to have, but hey. Let's admit it. It has been a thing since the '80s (Starflight, Sentinel Worlds I: Future Past, etc.). Cannot call something like that an advanced feature in 2023. Same goes for hiring your own crew. Especially thanks to how basic that feature is. And again, it's something you probably won't bother with.\n\nAnd it's not like this game is perfectly made either. I mean, of course it's not. it's from Bethesda after all. Still, it's rather shocking to see that after eight years in development this game gives you trouble... changing the resolution. Personally, I didn't even find the way to properly switch to 4K through the menus. Manually editing the .ini file was the only thing that helped. With the game being good it would be an easy thing to forgive, but like I said, Starfield is anything but good.\n\nIs it bad? Well... not really, no. If you 'll find yourself on an uninhabited island with only this game installed on your laptop? It would totally be possible to have some fun with it. I mean, it's a game. It feels a lot like Skyrim in space (yes, it even has powers), there are ships to fly, guns to shoot, quests to finish, factions to join, etc. It's not like there's something especially terrible about it or something. And it's not like it's a complete mess. There are bugs, sure, but those are not overwhelming. Not at the moment I am writing this, at least. The problem is—at the moment I write this, there are more than 120,000 other games available on Steam. And lots and lots of those are extremely good. Much better than Starfield. So, let me act like Mr. Spock and say that wasting your time (and as I said, Starfield wants, like, all of your time) on this game? It sounds illogical. There's literally nothing in this game that it does better than others. As sad as it's, Starfield is a boring routine, not an entertainment. Go pick up something else to play instead of it. Except for the occasional frustrations with outpost management, the game is relatively fun and, in many ways, as good as any other AAA title out there.\n\nWhat stands out most is its willingness to slow down. You’re not always being pushed into apocalyptic urgency or endless faction conflicts. Instead, the game offers space—literally and figuratively—to just exist in its universe. That calm air is something modern games often forget to include. There are long stretches where you’re simply traveling, scanning planets, listening to ambient sounds, or walking through a quiet settlement, and that restraint becomes part of its charm.\n\nBethesda Game Studios leans into a more traditional RPG structure here. The story isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, and that’s fine. It provides a framework rather than a spectacle, allowing players to engage with it at their own pace. Not every narrative needs to be a grand, world-ending epic filled with constant twists and high drama. Sometimes a lighter touch, with smaller personal stories and exploration-driven moments, can be just as engaging.\n\nThere’s also something to be said about the sense of solitude the game captures. Space doesn’t always feel dangerous—it often feels quiet, almost meditative. That mood won’t appeal to everyone, especially players looking for constant adrenaline, but for those who enjoy a slower, more contemplative experience, it hits a rare sweet spot.\n\nOf course, the game isn’t without flaws. Systems like outpost building can feel clunky, and some mechanics don’t reach their full potential. But even with those shortcomings, the overall experience remains solid. It’s a reminder that a game doesn’t need relentless intensity or deeply complex storytelling to be enjoyable—it just needs a world that feels worth spending time in.\n\nPeace, and love <3","timestamp_created":1774607775,"timestamp_updated":1774622674,"voted_up":true,"votes_up":134,"votes_funny":24,"weighted_vote_score":"0.709472715854644775","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[{"reaction_type":26,"count":8},{"reaction_type":28,"count":6},{"reaction_type":35,"count":4},{"reaction_type":29,"count":3},{"reaction_type":24,"count":2},{"reaction_type":34,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"213574637","author":{"steamid":"76561197993995389","personaname":"kzrsoze","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197993995389/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":4,"playtime_forever":34955,"playtime_last_two_weeks":3258,"playtime_at_review":17775,"last_played":1776587063,"avatar":"fef49e7fa7e1997310d705b2a6158ff8dc1cdfeb"},"language":"english","review":"So what others have said about the story (main) being lackluster, the world lacking grit and gore, POIs being recycled on planets and travel being largely a series of loading screens are all true, but damn it if I still don't love this game!\r\n\r\nIt is now the game I have put the most playtime into (recently beating out Kenshi) and I'll be damned if I don't keep coming back for more. Now what helped me get into it was a rather backwards path. I played it heavily modded first using everything the wonderful folks who made Star Wars Genesis created. It was the Star Wars bounty hunter game I always wanted (yeah no lightsabers, but not EVERY Star Wars game needs lightsabers imho)! After I had sunk a ton of hours wearing Mando armor shooting Trandoshans and Pykes in the face with all the Star Wars guns and flying the Falcon, I finally thought, ok let's give vanilla a chance (largely for the shipbuilding, because once you have the Falcon other ships in the game don't really matter).\r\n\r\nI was pleasantly surprised with Vanilla at first (granted I do also have Shattered Skies DLC - needed for Genesis). The quests made sense, the shipbuilding was worth it and added a sense of progression and goals, some of the questlines are actually great (UC Vanguard). What has really sucked me in now are the Creations (ewww gross, this guy is shilling paid mods instead of being mad Bethesda doesn't fix their own damn game) they really help the game feel more immersive and harder in a way (main ones I like: Watchtower, Space Economy, McClarence Outfitters, some of the free Bethesda ones). Also I am, happy to kick some money toward modders, they are actively making the game better. Also, I approach video games like movie tickets, am I gonna get the same or more value than going to go see a movie in theaters, i.e. am I getting at least 0.2 hrs of entertainment per dollar spent. With Starfield I have probably spent around $100 on the game and all paid mods/dlc which by my metric is 3hrs of entertainment/dollar, an order of magnitude more value than a movie. \r\n\r\nFinal Verdict: \r\nIs Starfield the Space Game to rule them all a true Skyrim in Space with ship and outpost building, a rich detailed world, and top notch writing for every character and every quest? No (and good luck finding that). BUT, is Starfield still a game that scratches an itch if you love space games, Star Wars, Firefly, have finished Mass Effect, NMS, and are sick of waiting for Star Citizen to ever fully release? YES, and I say it's worth it.","timestamp_created":1766073261,"timestamp_updated":1766073261,"voted_up":true,"votes_up":73,"votes_funny":13,"weighted_vote_score":"0.709326386451721191","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[{"reaction_type":19,"count":4},{"reaction_type":22,"count":2},{"reaction_type":16,"count":1},{"reaction_type":1,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"211560822","author":{"steamid":"76561198994256396","personaname":"Lovecrafted","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198994256396/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":21,"playtime_forever":12591,"playtime_last_two_weeks":0,"playtime_at_review":12129,"last_played":1764472960,"avatar":"fad9149e4cd6a3556572b819a2324c5a7c1f289c"},"language":"english","review":"Recommended (on sale)\n\nI read the reviews, I held off buying for about a year, waited for a big sale… and honestly? Starfield is exactly what you’d expect from “Bethesda in space.”\n\nIt’s Fallout. It’s Skyrim. In space. There are differences, but nothing game-changing. The gameplay loop is very familiar: wander, loot, shoot, talk, repeat. Exploring is fun at first, hopping from planet to planet and poking into random points of interest. Outpost building becomes pretty entertaining in the late game, especially if you like tinkering and planning little resource networks.\n\nNG+ is actually one of the more interesting parts. No spoilers, but it feels less like a full reset and more like a weird, semi-continuous run that gives the game a bit of extra life if you’re already invested.\n\nOn the downside, the Shattered Space DLC was… pretty meh. The whole game feels like Bethesda *could* have gone back, cleaned things up, and really sharpened the experience based on feedback, but instead they seem to have shrugged and leaned on the modding community to fix and expand the game for them. Pretty typical at this point.\n\nIf you’re looking for a deep, memorable RPG story with rich choices and consequences, this isn’t it. If you want to build cool spaceships, shoot pirates, and play a sort of space looter-shooter sandbox, you’ll probably get your money’s worth. Yesyesyes, Free Lanes delivered and then some! It expanded the exploration potential immensely, did the same for immersion, and made the game even more meditative than before! Systems feel truly lived in now! \n\nAnd this is beyond the myriad QoL improvements and mechanical expansions it added to the game! This world just got a LOT bigger!\n\nOriginal: After putting this game off since launch due to reports of instability and, well, it just not being a \"good\" game, I am happy to say it may be one of the best surprises I've ever had in terms of gaming.\n\n[strike]While, true, the lack of freeform space exploration present in other games (i.e. being able to travel between planets in a system without passing through a loading screen) does make itself felt,[/strike] I've found everything else to be absolutely engrossing! [strike](to note, this will probably be an outdated observation once the Free Lanes update rolls out! Exciting times, honestly!)[/strike]\n\nThis is a good Bethesda game! The writing is leagues above any of the more recent Fallout titles. While not quite as deep as Skyrim's, the world building is still a deep well of mysteries, complex lore, history, and emergent stories. In terms of mechanics, I think it's safe to say it has the best movement and combat systems in any Bethesda game thus far, and it looks great-to-gorgeous!\n\nIt is still a game utilising the Creation Engine, and some of the familiar hiccups are still there - NPCs sometimes being baffled by a chair in their path, physics hilarity still occasionally ensues when characters or the player bump into decorative objects, and I have encountered a couple of crashes. However, I must say, I wasn't expecting for it to be THIS stable! I mean it, even with a not-insignificant amount of mods and Creations installed, I think this one has crashed the least (by far!) out of all other Bethesda titles I've played so far! And, I swear, it's the first time when I'm not afraid of Alt-Tabbing out of a Creation Engine game!\n\nBut even beyond the newfound smoothness of the engine, even beyond the greatly improved texture fidelity and model detailing, even beyond the visceral immediacy of combat, it's the story which gripped me. It genuinely filled me with a sense of wonder I haven't felt in a long time! True, as mentioned, it may not be as outwardly dense as Skyrim's, but Bethesda have absolutely nailed that \"epicness\" of a good Space Opera! I haven't slept this little since binge-reading Foundation. \n\nFor the first time in a long time, I'm excited about the possibilities! I hope they'll stick with it in spite of the reception it got. It genuinely feels as though they're heading in the right direction with this one, especially if they manage to achieve what they've set out to do with the upcoming update and DLC.\n\nEdit: oh, and the driving is 100% Mass Effect: floaty, fast, and fun!\n\nP.S.: if anyone at Bethesda is reading this, please don't be afraid to go even crazier with the additions! There's so much room for space insanity in this one! From mind-boggling sentient species, to even more out-there Space Magic stuff, and even the more esoteric theories about the spacetime continuum, you've genuinely created a solid foundation upon which any and all of the above would thrive! Heck, I wouldn't even mind seeing Space Khajiit! I mean, can you imagine the massive trade empire they could've built?! And it's also one of, if not the most beautiful game aesthetically I have ever played.\n Yesterday, while I was exploring random worlds to finally set up my first outpost, I got interviewed for a galaxy wide news network, helped some colonists lay scientific tech to test air quality, took back an abandoned mining operation from pirate squatters, and stumbled upon a massive drilling platform that was elevated above the surface of some random moon that was infested with parasitic alien creatures that had wiped out the entire staff. There is some merit to the complaints, but this game is a massive leap forward for all RPGs, for Bethesda, and is an absolute blast. - I really wanted to dislike this game, but I can't. Sure it's not 100% ideal, I wish you could space walk, find more things in space itself, (there's a lot, but you'll see what I mean) but the more I play it, the more I genuinely enjoy it and the more I discover there is to discover, and that's something that should be advocated for much more in this industry. there's so much game here it's well worth the money.","timestamp_created":1764458164,"timestamp_updated":1764458164,"voted_up":true,"votes_up":36,"votes_funny":7,"weighted_vote_score":"0.597406923770904541","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[{"reaction_type":19,"count":8},{"reaction_type":16,"count":1},{"reaction_type":2,"count":1},{"reaction_type":18,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"223244551","author":{"steamid":"76561198276121160","personaname":"Muzza-Flucka","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198276121160/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":6,"playtime_forever":24221,"playtime_last_two_weeks":0,"playtime_at_review":24221,"deck_playtime_at_review":248,"last_played":1696544266,"avatar":"8ff78e48a4fe113883586a96c6e793c8faf84a67"},"language":"english","review":"There will be a point rather early on in your playthrough where you will realize that you are simply not having fun. Honestly, this game would be better with less of a narrative at this point. Just give me a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ excuse to engage with these gameplay systems, because mechanically, they are fantastic.\r\n\r\nThe Bad:\r\nThe story. The narrative is just hot garbage. I find myself actively trying to be an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ just to manufacture some kind of compelling tension with NPCs, but the game barely lets you do it. The RPG elements are so homogenized that it barely feels like an RPG at all. You make a choice, you get XP, and that's it. No lasting consequences, no buffs or debuffs, no real gains or losses.\r\n\r\nThe Illusion of Choice:\r\nYes, there are choices, but the narrative is so sanitized that you have no reason to care about making them.\r\n\r\nThere is a side quest where you encounter a 200-year-old generation ship from Earth. They have no idea humanity has expanded across the galaxy or that technology has advanced to the point where they could freely integrate into modern society. Turns out, the planet they are orbiting is technically theirs by right of first claim—except a massive corporation planted a luxury resort there first.\r\n\r\nThe game presents you with three choices to resolve this:\r\n\r\n 1. Force the colonists to \"pay\" an arbitrary debt to the corporation via indentured servitude.\r\n\r\n 2. Buy them an expensive grav drive out of your own pocket so they can ♥♥♥♥ off to another world.\r\n\r\n 3. Destroy the ship and kill everyone on board.\r\n\r\nThe Total Lack of Impact:\r\nOn paper, these choices should have profound, lasting consequences. You would expect the game to reflect the weight of your actions:\r\n\r\n 1. If you buy them a drive, maybe you stumble upon their crashed ship later on a barren world because they didn't understand the new tech.\r\n\r\n 2. If you force them into servitude, maybe your standing with the corporation increases and you become a known corporate slaver.\r\n\r\n 3. If you blow them up, maybe it puts a permanent bounty on your head, makes you a target, or you get hunted down by their distant descendants.\r\n\r\nNone of that happens.\r\n\r\nIf you force them into servitude, they simply land, put on resort uniforms, and become background NPCs with single lines of dialogue. If you kill them, the quest just ends. You get your XP. Congrats, you're done. If you buy them a grav drive, they jump away never to be seen or heard from again. \"Quest complete.\"\r\n\r\nThe Verdict:\r\nI have no reason to care about any of my choices because the narrative takes zero risks and does nothing to compel me to care about anyone or anything in this universe. At this point, it is literally No Man's Sky with extra steps.\r\n\r\nThe systems and gameplay presented are genuinely good. But the universe I am supposed to immerse myself and roleplay within does nothing to make me feel like my actions actually matter. For Christ's sake, in Skyrim, you can determine the outcome of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ civil war! Where is that level of tension here? At no point have I felt anything other than bored with the RPG elements—which is supposed to be the core of what Bethesda is known for.","timestamp_created":1775961028,"timestamp_updated":1775961028,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":12,"votes_funny":0,"weighted_vote_score":"0.581624746322631836","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","hardware":{"manufacturer":"System manufacturer","model":"System Product Name","dx_video_card":"NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090","dx_vendorid":4318,"dx_deviceid":8708,"num_gpu":1,"system_ram":"32692","os":"Windows 11","cpu_vendor":"AuthenticAMD","cpu_name":"AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor ","gaming_device_type":1,"dx_driver_version":"32.0.15.9579","adapter_description":"NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090","driver_version":"32.0.15.9579","driver_date":"2026-3-4","vram_size":24325,"screen_width":null,"screen_height":null},"reactions":[{"reaction_type":31,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"222855750","author":{"steamid":"76561198009068121","personaname":"xeonwarrior","persona_status":"in-game","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198009068121/","num_games_owned":314,"num_reviews":12,"playtime_forever":11677,"playtime_last_two_weeks":2587,"playtime_at_review":9936,"last_played":1776587811,"avatar":"6ee2b77f5c79d32797c2910524431b93bdd3837c"},"language":"english","review":"coming back to see the updates 3 years later i can say its a better but still underwhelming game. still Restricted by the same old engine but it still follow a bethesda formula and a lot of people like that. I especially hate the shallow exploration mechanic exploring the same ten “randomly” generated abandoned outposts occupied by the same infinitely respawning pirates and spacers, with no differences between the outposts except the terrain. Seriously, can’t there at least be slight differences inside and around the outposts?\n\nI also hate the fact that a few of those outposts we are supposed to explore are clearly meant for a planet with an atmosphere, like the tall science outpost, but you can still find it on planets or moons with no atmosphere. This really breaks immersion when the massive open entrance area, which is also supposed to be the airlock, takes seconds to open and doesn’t even let the outside door fully close before opening the inside door.\n\nThe planets and moons all feel empty and bland, with no real settlements except the few created by Bethesda. Even those are quite bland and boring, except for New Atlantis, which is just okay on a surface level. Also, why doesn’t this game have the space equivalent of frontier towns? Since this is mostly a procedurally generated game when it comes to exploration, it really makes the planets feel empty, and unbeliveable that all of these outposts don't have any accociated local settlement that the workers commute from that isn't just 1 building or 4 habitats.\n\nAre you seriously telling me people on a planet like Jemison only has one city/town? Does everyone there just commute to their outpost job on the other side of the planet? That could have been a fantastic way for Bethesda to explain why their main cities have such a low population, by explaining that the majority of the population lives in frontier towns and that large settlements don’t really exist anymore like they did in the old world.\n\nThe main story is really bland and unreplayable, except for the part of the main story involving the science outpost with the dimension shifting. The power system is completely uninspired and unnecessary, and practically nobody uses it. Most of the side quests are quite shallow and boring, with no variation depending on your decisions, except for the Crimson Fleet infiltration story, which is still shallow in the end.\n\nFor some reason, you can join opposing factions the UC and the Freestar Collective and there is no real sense of progression in anything. Even when you supposedly cripple the pirate faction, they are still just as bountiful as before.\n\nThe lore of the starfield universe is uninspired, bland, and boring. For example, the reason that we can't visit the earth could have been more simply explained, that the earth is simply unopen to most of the people of the settled systems do to a settlement policy do to massive overpopulation and pollution with the earth goverment wanting to restore a more natural ecology to the earth and only their settlements in sol and in other systems that haven't become independent, being open to outsiders.\n\nIt would also be a much better explanation why the settled systems are so homogeneous compared to the real word, if the people of earth would have to evacuate in a few decades in a panic from the earth, they would be alot less homogeneous then the game portrays, with separate goverments choosing diffrent colonies for their populations. But instead they leave a gaping plot hole in the logic of the jump drives that they are all ticking time bombs from one bad part or bad refurbishment away from stripping away the atmosphere of an entire planet.\n\nThe followers are a step down from previous Bethesda titles, which weren’t even that good to begin with, except for Serana, The follower side quests were the only half-good thing about them. I despise the filler NPCs, which are somehow worse than other filler NPCs from a game that came out the same year as Bethesda’s last release fallout 4 before this one, The Witcher 3. This is mainly because they look ridiculous and don’t seem to be doing or going anywhere. In The Witcher 3, I can fully immerse myself in the fact that the filler NPCs in Novigrad are going somewhere for some reason, like going to the market or going to work to churn some butter, but here they are just awful, And the regular NPCs are no better, with them seemingly having no life, working 24/7 and requiring no sleep.\n\nWith the rumors of another update that is supposed to be Starfield’s equivalent to the Cyberpunk 2.0 update, just remember that the base game of Cyberpunk was excellent and only really needed polishing to be the masterpiece that it is. The core game of Starfield is quite bad, and every part of this game would need to be overhauled to have the same glow-up that Cyberpunk got. I really hope it gets that glow-up, but I think they would need to remake this game from scratch to do that.","timestamp_created":1767482908,"timestamp_updated":1767504296,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":11,"votes_funny":0,"weighted_vote_score":"0.580305218696594238","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[]},{"recommendationid":"223031061","author":{"steamid":"76561199780244006","personaname":"DaleCooper","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/id/TheRealDaleCooper/","num_games_owned":35,"num_reviews":18,"playtime_forever":2419,"playtime_last_two_weeks":0,"playtime_at_review":2419,"last_played":1728855429,"avatar":"b7fa265520976ed95111f9482b0668ed5772b5f6"},"language":"english","review":"For a game that boasts a huge number of worlds, this game is surprisingly lifeless. I bought this full price at launch and yeah compared to other bethesda games it is a letdown. \n\nHere's what the game has going for it: \n1. Gunplay when you compare it to fallout is much smoother, has great sound qualities, and the graphics are nice. \n2. Raiding and docking enemy spaceships is exciting and a great concept. \n3. Discovering new species on planets is fun at times and amplifies the experience of being a space traveller. \n\nHere is what they missed: \n1. I don't think they have developed the idea of whether the game was fantasy or Space Sim. There are aggressive space aliens, but no 'intelligent' space species which leads to the game feeling like it was rushed. Each planet is only filled with a couple of species of creatures which again loses the immersive feeling. This leads to feeling like you are in a digital sandbox. \n2. The biggest flaw in the game is the Temples. Every single temple is the same, no variation. Just why? No dungeon experience, no enemies defending, same severely easy puzzle each time. Just creating unique temples with unique encounters, different puzzles would have saved this game. \n3. This is beating a dead space horse, but again the planets are also devoid of anything meaningful. There should be rhyme and reason to locating minerals (weapon crafting, saving dying species, etc). Planets with life on them should have diverse species at least 20 (maybe thats asking too much idk, but 3 ain't cutting it). And at least a few planets should have structures from intelligent alien species if you're going to already include other alien lifeforms. \n\nGame is worth a quick playthrough if you get it on sale and beat it once. But it needs much more concept development and intelligent design to gain peoples' trust back.","timestamp_created":1764116870,"timestamp_updated":1764116870,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":11,"votes_funny":0,"weighted_vote_score":"0.575704216957092285","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[]},{"recommendationid":"214648049","author":{"steamid":"76561199433420378","personaname":"bakedintheus","persona_status":"online","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561199433420378/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":4,"playtime_forever":1492,"playtime_last_two_weeks":0,"playtime_at_review":1492,"last_played":1724203735,"avatar":"fef49e7fa7e1997310d705b2a6158ff8dc1cdfeb"},"language":"english","review":"You will never convince me that CE 2 is any kind of major improvement over the CE used in Skyrim and Fallout games of that era. But the standard $70 USD price tag is obscene for what you get with this game. One review I saw summed it up very nicely: wide as an ocean but an inch deep. They put so much effort into making the game feel \"big\" but forgot to actually put in the content to make it big. It's loaded with bugs still. The $30 DLC offering is a joke for what you get from it.\n\nYou select a solar system to warp to. LOADING SCREEN. You arrive in the solar system in open space. Now you choose the planet to go to. LOADING SCREEN. Next you choose where to land on the planet from the map. LOADING SCREEN. Finally you get out on the planet and get to play but wait... it's not open world. You are playing on a small area that you cannot go outside of without getting in your ship and landing somewhere else on the planet.\n\nWant to spend $70 on gameplay? Buy No Man's Sky. It's a bigger and better experience. Only thing I would say Starfield does better is the combat mechanics, and that's a \"barely better\" situation. In No Man's Sky, you choose a new solar system and warp to it. LOADING SCREEN. Now you're there in space. Want to land on a planet? You actually fly to it instead of fast traveling from a map. Once you reach the planet, instead of choose a landing site from the map and again fast traveling, in NMS you actually fly down into the atmosphere and onto the planet.\n\nNMS gives you that seamless space adventure. Starfield gives you a fragmented space adventure that is primarily broken up with loading screens.\n\nOtherwise, there are plenty of other games that are better than Starfield in the $30 or less price range. It's scripted to hand hold the player and keep them from running off to learn how things work so i gave it the benefit of doubt.\nAfter Jemison, a huge wall of text explains the 'cruise mode' to travel between planets, with the option to fast travel, and some POI's in between so this mechanic gets a passing wave as a start. Obviously, it doesn't want you to fly too close to planets, and if you try it becomes pretty obvious they're just sphere's floating around everywhere.\nHOWEVER, it is a significant improvement from the loading screens, it nullifies them for quick ones which is basically just the screen blurring while it processes where you are, but space travel feels more involved now. Instead of watching your ship travel through space, now you are, though travel between systems is still the same.\nAs is a lot of things.\n1 hour in and it's obvious that this is just a new mechanic, a needed one for sure, but basically nothing else has changed. I did notice some QOL improvements, so it feels a little smoother but otherwise it just doesn't feel like much outside of it has really changed. Cruising phases out other ships and effectively shunts you into a new traversable space to explore and shunts you back into the games previous mechanics when you reach a POI or exit cruise mode.\n\nReality:\n\nit's a newly made mechanic that's just been fit in between everything, the only thing major about it is the huge increase in file size, more than doubling the original size of starfield. I assume because of all the assets it adds in for you to explore this effective bridge between places. It's pretty underwhelming but it also actually improves the experience significantly. Frankly, however, this should've been how it was at launch, compared to how the game is or was it is an improvement but it's pretty basic and i feel like it's essentially just a toy for modders to play with which also makes sense.\nA minor or at most regular update, really, you can sort of easily boil it down into QOL improvements and bug fixes.\n\nmodding:\n\na lot of mods are going to be uber broken just trying to work with this new mechanic and i feel it's going to be a scramble to fix. I am personally excited to see what mod authors will do with it, POI mods, my favorite mod starvival working it's fuel use into it. However, i fear that is also bathesda's goal, so they can monetize it.\n\ntl;dr it is an improvement, but it's one that should've been in the game at the start, otherwise it doesn't really improve the game as a whole outside of finally letting the player explore space instead of watching their ship fly through it.\n\nIt's a space game and you watched space fly without the ability to fly through it. This fixes that, but exploring space is the minimum you should expect out of any space game period.\n\n______________________________________________________________\nReview of the game itself:\n\nWith the right mods it becomes rather interesting, but it's been happening again and again recently that burns me out on it; the lack of generative flavor and poor base building. \n\nStraight up, if they just had doors between habitats it'd be okay for me, but they failed to have that so it was extremely disappointing to try and make anything. A mod fixes that so i'm not totally bummed out by it.\n\nMeanwhile the generation of planets becomes stale very quickly. just a landscape without many features, landing even on mountain biomes is effectively flat terrain with some hills that is so long that i get really bored just trying to get the special features scanned. There isn't really any mods that can fix that though so it ends up being the driving thing that makes me step away from the game, it's just not interesting exploring planets at all besides money which is sad for a game with a theme for exploration. Mods that augment enemies and make the POI's more interesting does make it tolerable by making up for it with interesting combat.\n\nOtherwise, with the right mods it becomes pretty entertaining, enough to come back every now and then. I'd probably wait for a sale for everything though.\n\ntl;dr, planets are boring and tedious to explore, mods can help spice things up enough that i come back every now and then. 'Kinda garbage but not hot smelly garbage, like the type of garbage you'd feel okay sticking your hand in to see if there's anything interesting inside and occasionally you fight a raccoon to keep things interesting, type of garbage' as a certain stab crazy Minnesotan lizard might say. This will contain small spoilers that I won't hide as they're part of the review, but everyone probably knows them by now anyway...\n\nIf I had to pick one word to use for Starfield, it would be \"unfortunately\". The core game is good, technology wise the game is the best yet aside from one minor bug I found very early that was easily resolved. The loading screens are an unfortunate result of the game engine's age, but the game looks pretty and you can get some really great views from it.\n\nHowever this is not where the game falls down, for all it's technical accomplishments (and for the game engine, it really is especially the ship building stuff) the game is fatally holed by the universe. Someone hilariously and depressingly summed it up as \"Space America vs Space Texas\" and this couldn't be more true. The background lore is generally bland, and is disappointingly not expanded upon when it isn't. That's ignoring the bits that don't make sense under the mildest scrutiny.\n\nThe story's version of \"exotic\" is anyone with an accent, and they can veer too close to the stereotype sun, so it too often feels a bit uncomfortable or bordering on parody. The main companions are better, but there is too little variety in their outlook - what flavour of \"Lawful Good\" would you like today?\n\nThe main mission is terribly bland and like the rest of the game full to the brim with missed opportunities - why does each new universe mean so little? Why are there so many powers when most are rubbish and/or poorly explained? There was a golden opportunity to make comparisons with the Hunter as you - the player - start to see each universe as a stepping stone and become more detached from the people in it. Or even put the extra effort in for very minor visual changes each universe that help make it feel more meaningful. Can't even be bothered give a character a different hair style?\n\nThe game has a great visual feel to it (Space Texas aside), but even this lacks cohesion. There's some posters for war veterans getting cybernetic limbs - cool. Is there any other mention of this, does anyone have a cybernetic limb? No. Planets look great, and seeing other planet and moons in the system doesn't get old. Sadly I can't say the same for how sparse all of them are, exploring to see the same thing you've seen countless times before.\n\nThe character customisation is good at its core, but - surprise - unfortunately it is let down by the clothing and suit options. You're really reduced in choice, with just a body and head for clothing and the space suit gets a backpack on top - there's no crafting just (reduced) upgrade options. Trying to get a decent suit set is like gambling as you raid chests and boss corpses hoping for something that doesn't suck (it will). That's before you want a matching set... Coming from other Bethesda games this is a huge downgrade and an even bigger let down. Fallout 4 had gibbing in, but that's missing too despite the bigger and nastier space guns here. Why are we getting so much less in a newer game?\n\nThe random POIs are good in theory, but there are far too few. I very quickly memorised them and knew where to look and what to find, it makes the game wear on you sooner than it should. There needs to be at least twice as many, ideally many more.\n\nI'm going to summarise now, before this gets any longer and I write a small novel. To sum it up, Starfield feels like missed opportunity after missed opportunity coupled with too many downgrades over previous games. If you want to properly delve into a universe and feel part of it Starfield isn't going to do that and unfortunately that's what I want from my RPG games - I tried for too long to find it in Starfield.\n\nI'll pick it up from time to time, as there is still enough to enjoy especially with mods (even if it's just killing the Space Pirates who are written so poorly I can't help but exterminate them every play through). Unfortunately that feels like the secret to enjoying Starfield - give up on most of the writing, characters, and factions (except the Vanguard and SysDef, best by far) - then you can enjoy the gameplay on its own. I suppose the Hunter was right all along.","timestamp_created":1766230620,"timestamp_updated":1766230620,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":8,"votes_funny":1,"weighted_vote_score":"0.555869102478027344","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[]},{"recommendationid":"223355220","author":{"steamid":"76561198028932356","personaname":"Among Airwaves","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198028932356/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":18,"playtime_forever":28289,"playtime_last_two_weeks":7386,"playtime_at_review":26015,"last_played":1776577544,"avatar":"d43bf03d4bf5552a7c9227bb0fee52d17b2a7937"},"language":"english","review":"More game breaking glitches in 2026 than in 2023, complete joke of a game and company. I really wanted to like it. At least 70-80 hours of my game time is afk. This game feels very dated despite it being such a new game. \n\nSurely this wasn't the vision fully realized. The game feels unfinished. The gameplay loop is to fast travel (from your ship) to different planets, go to them and do something and fast travel again. In Skyrim, Oblivion, or Fallout 4 for example you had that continuity with a fully open map. Here there are many large spaces generated and it's great that the engine is capable of that, but none of them are connected so it is meaningless. If it was all one giant connected world it would have been more interesting.\n\nI can use my imagination that I traveled with the ship and make myself believe it was all an open world. The gameplay loop and open world issue aren't even the biggest issues. \n\nThe bigger issue is the game puts you into this world and this plot and just expects you to take it seriously. With the other games from Bethesda I could take them seriously because they were far enough out for me to suspend disbelief and enjoy the fantasy settings, even with fallout. Here I am dropped into this plot and expected to think it's cool, and believable. Also the characters really threw me off.\n\nThe blonde female is really annoying. She really took me out of immersion when she talked. Also seeing a bunch of characters with dumb college gen z hair cuts really threw me off and made it hard to take the game seriously. Even the voices of some of the characters and how they talk to you were really annoying.\n\nI see where Bethesda was trying to go. An epic space RPG. Unfortunately it really just fell short. Maybe this game was just made 15 years too early, but I don't know. CyberPunk 2077 managed to pull off a way more crazy future feeling in a game that felt more space like and out of this world than StarField and it took place on earth. They didn't need to wait 15 years to make that game. Even Spore had a better space travel system and was more memorable and that game was made in 2008. The Creation engine is now capable of handling large maps but what is the point in having them if all you do is fast travel to them for no reason?\n\nLook at the world map from Skyrim compared to this game. Bethesda could have made an EPIC and beautiful space map but they made a super bland and bad basic star map that makes me uninspired to explore.\n\nMaybe Bethesda's game engine just needs some upgrades. I played some other space games recently and the combat, and space travel just feel was a lot better than StarField on all levels. Also It wasn't just a gimmick fast travel. Some of these games actually allow you to fly through atmospheres or accelerate 100000 thousands of times your speed to go to distant planets (or so it felt and showed). Unlike the fast travel system here with a lame map.\n\nWhen the trappers guild recruiter first approached me and made it seem like an honor that I got a request to join the Trapper's Guild I can't tell you how dumb that moment felt to me. I was clearly supposed to think it was an epic moment that I got to join the guild but I can't tell you how much I just didn't care about their little guild. In Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim and least the guilds actually felt cool.\n\nAlso the dialogue in this game just really doesn't match anything I would want to say in real life, or in a game even roll playing a character. The language is all too flirtatious and flowery, and lame. Not all of us want to role play a 28 year old hipster from 2013.\n\nI just wasn't that impressed. I couldn't get myself into the game. Too many things took me out of immersion. The UI wasn't very intuitive at first, the constant fast travel breaks. I just got off of playing other games like mass effect 1 4k remake from the legendary edition and honestly that game felt absolutely epic. Graphically it was better than this game, the story felt urgent and real unlike this game.\n\nTodd Howard probably had an amazing vision and it was lost due to technology not being there and Bethesda being too slow to upgrade their engine, as well as a strange tone injected into the game from new hires onto the team with political/moral ideology. There is a patronizing tone that is slightly pushed and baked into the game. The game has more guard rails than other Bethesda games. I haven't beaten the game yet and I'm not sure if I will. This is my third attempt to play the game. A lot of my time is just spent AFK because I lose interest in the game and walk away.\n\nGraphically it doesn't hold up with any new game like cyberpunk or Indiania Jones and The Great Circle. Gameplay wise it doesn't hold up with any modern shooter. I really wanted to like this game. Maybe if they keep working on it, but the characters are also annoying.","timestamp_created":1769850488,"timestamp_updated":1769851822,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":9,"votes_funny":0,"weighted_vote_score":"0.549987554550170898","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[{"reaction_type":26,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"215065493","author":{"steamid":"76561197983787155","personaname":"Delvon","persona_status":"online","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197983787155/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":121,"playtime_forever":138,"playtime_last_two_weeks":0,"playtime_at_review":68,"last_played":1767520314,"avatar":"8dfe278c7493b6984540e57ecd57b791df13841e"},"language":"english","review":"Game is good dont listen to the Haters,Full Mod Support !\nStunning Graphics and good Ambiente.","timestamp_created":1767479541,"timestamp_updated":1767479541,"voted_up":true,"votes_up":3,"votes_funny":0,"weighted_vote_score":"0.549713432788848877","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[]},{"recommendationid":"218467778","author":{"steamid":"76561197995944843","personaname":"FuzzySheep","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197995944843/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":16,"playtime_forever":5279,"playtime_last_two_weeks":0,"playtime_at_review":5279,"last_played":1769369156,"avatar":"b5860c41b828ad0fe69b8408c192295bc4592a79"},"language":"english","review":"Shallow, repetitive, tedious, and ultimately really boring. It's so cool, and I love it for that.","timestamp_created":1775588532,"timestamp_updated":1775588532,"voted_up":true,"votes_up":7,"votes_funny":0,"weighted_vote_score":"0.54936140775680542","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":true,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[{"reaction_type":31,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"222829061","author":{"steamid":"76561198066383210","personaname":"MeowOrNever","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198066383210/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":20,"playtime_forever":2215,"playtime_last_two_weeks":128,"playtime_at_review":2215,"last_played":1775673593,"avatar":"5b9b1368d2a50b2cb2960dee8466ba8e542f4d1c"},"language":"english","review":"Starfield Review (30+ Hours Played)\r\n\r\nI’ve put about 30+ hours into Starfield, and this is coming from someone pushing 40 who doesn’t have the patience to wait 10–15 hours for a game to “get good.” That’s a trend with newer big games (looking at Crimson Desert), and it’s honestly frustrating. There should be something in the first couple hours that hooks you and makes you say, “Yeah, I’m in.”\r\n\r\nThat said, I don’t think this game is bad but its not good. It runs fine, and I haven’t experienced any game breaking bugs. The bigger issue is that the engine just doesn’t handle the scale the game is aiming for.\r\n\r\nFrom space to planets, everything feels segmented. You’re constantly aware you’re moving between “rooms” separated by loading screens/levels. The problem is this is supposed to be a seamless space adventure, and it never feels that way.\r\n\r\nTake space travel: you sit in your cockpit, open a menu, select a system, then a planet, then confirm and load into a new “space room.” Once there, you can fly around, but to land? Back to a menu, pick a spot, and load again. Then when you exit your ship... another loading screen. It ends up feeling less like exploring space and more like navigating a Windows file directory: system → planet → landing zone → interior.\r\n\r\nCities are where the immersion really breaks down. NPCs feel dead characters often stand around with stiff, repetitive animations and cycle through the same few lines of dialogue. It pulls you right out of the experience.\r\n\r\nAnd then there’s New Atlantis… specifically. I absolutely hate New Atlantis. It feels like a monument to everything wrong with the game: awkward to navigate, lifeless character movement, and surprisingly low population density in a capital city. There are barely any people moving around in a believable way, and the lack of roads or vehicles is honestly baffling. It makes the vehicle they eventually added feel like an afterthought because it clearly was, patched in later instead of being part of the core design.\r\n\r\nVisually, it’s very much a Bethesda game. The environments can look great walking on a moon or exploring certain ships can feel high fidelity but animations and facial expressions are stiff and dated. It almost feels like old tech with a fresh coat of paint. Movement is what sells realism, and this game doesn’t quite get there.\r\n\r\nGameplay is where things get interesting. It ranges from boring to genuinely fun. The shooting is actually the best I’ve experienced in a Bethesda game, solid, responsive, and something I consistently looked forward to. Enemy AI isn’t amazing, but it gets the job done.\r\n\r\nShip combat is decent too. Managing power across systems is a cool mechanic, and combat has a nice sense of weight, you feel both the damage you deal and the hits you take.\r\n\r\nZero and low-gravity gameplay is a standout. It adds a fun twist to combat and movement, letting you float, reposition, and rain fire from above. It’s one of the few areas where the game really feels fresh.\r\n\r\nShip and base building are also strong. I enjoyed them quite a bit, though I couldn’t help comparing them to No Man’s Sky, which still feels like a cleaner, more intuitive experience overall. That said, Starfield wins if you prefer a more grounded, realistic visual style.\r\n\r\nStory and missions are… fine. Some moments stand out, but a lot of it feels forgettable. It’s clear the focus was on scale over storytelling, which hurts an RPG like this. A stronger narrative could have carried players through the clutter and complexity.\r\n\r\nFinal Verdict:\r\nI wouldn’t recommend this at full price. But if you’ve got Game Pass or can grab it under $30, there’s definitely fun to be had here, just don’t expect a seamless space epic.","timestamp_created":1775675812,"timestamp_updated":1775675812,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":9,"votes_funny":0,"weighted_vote_score":"0.549237489700317383","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[]},{"recommendationid":"222997150","author":{"steamid":"76561197971660381","personaname":"boh","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/id/bohz/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":26,"playtime_forever":8367,"playtime_last_two_weeks":1539,"playtime_at_review":7861,"deck_playtime_at_review":17,"last_played":1775970108,"avatar":"5b8c6669a9d87a337d9b7a1a89fdb3f7f3fb4e43"},"language":"english","review":"It's not genre defining or anything, but it's a fun experience with plenty of value at this stage. In some ways I really enjoy the game, and others it feels like a slap in the face. I played through the game several time and played NG+ several times as a reference.
\n\n[olist]\n [*]Combat-wise, I enjoyed the game. I don't expect crazy gun mechanics in an RPG, but it was still good enough for me.\n [*]Ship building was really fun in the beginning, but I wish there were even more options for parts. \n [*]Flight is where I started to see cracks, and I'm not even talking about the initial disappointment of space travel. My issue is that sometimes(ALOT) when I fly, half of the spaceport would glitch and follow me into space and then be permanently attached to my ship until I restarted the game. This could also occur with asteroids you destroyed. Now this could be corrected with mods from the community, but if you do that, you can say goodbye to achievements. Which is terrible, but flying with a GIGANTIC obstructive building or asteroid following and blocking you is way worse.\n [*]The vast emptiness of space. I have no issue with this, it's got realism to it and while that might not appeal to everyone, I found it fine.\n [*]REPETITION. In my opinion this is what killed the game for me. Once you have seen 4 different pirate areas, you've seen them all. They are all basically identical and really make you not want to do any exploration or side missions at all. BECAUSE YOU'VE ALREADY SEEN IT ALL. Some might say that Skyrim or other Bethesda games also have cookie cutter dungeons, but not even remotely close to how IDENTICAL each of the outposts in this game are. Lets play devil's advocate and say that they're prefabs lore-wise and it's just how most are made? I could accept that, if there was more lore at each site to at least spark my interest. I can handle a vastly empty space game if the areas I do explore have a giant amount of lore and content. The problem is that because each area is identical to one of the 4-5 outpost options, you know exactly where to find the loot/quest item and quickly get out.\n[/olist]\n\nAll this to say, I'm about to replay it with the new DLC, so I'll update if any of this has improved.","timestamp_created":1775980027,"timestamp_updated":1775980483,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":2,"votes_funny":0,"weighted_vote_score":"0.545454561710357666","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[]},{"recommendationid":"222802783","author":{"steamid":"76561198047318813","personaname":"Baba","persona_status":"in-game","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/id/thebaba1/","num_games_owned":512,"num_reviews":69,"playtime_forever":8294,"playtime_last_two_weeks":3746,"playtime_at_review":5157,"last_played":1776587391,"avatar":"28c86ac757249555d23a08d8b40723b5b1f487f6"},"language":"english","review":"A hearty recommendation after the Free Lanes update. It's hard to get my point across there because I'm not sure how to explain it but to summarize, the world building and writing (both story and dialogue) is awful. It's beautiful and interesting. What you idiots did was boring. Half developed story. Half developed \"outpost\" system, you literally had Fallout 4 settlement development system that is significantly better. Your game significantly bugs out after 30+ hours with textures or even the terrain permanently not load making some parts of cities either difficult to navigate or completely inaccessible or mission critical NPC spawn outside of the play area needing console commands to get to which disables your achievements. The decisions in the game you make are meaningless. The most fun I had was in a side quest that does absolutely nothing to the outcome of the game because decisions in the game don't matter. Your weapons are half thought of with many models and animations absolutely screwed such as sliding features that magically slide on solid frames with no rails. I don't think the game is a pile of anything, there are things that are fun or cool about the game, some aspects that they nailed... buuuut sadly those good things are between other things that aren't so good and are hard to look past. \r\nSo, to start with I think the game's aesthetics are pretty cool, it feels pretty accurate for the kind of future they're trying to portray. However that only applies to the cities or generated bases, as the planets themselves are big fields of nothingness. They tried to fix this problem by introducing a drivable rover for when you land somewhere but there are many planetary environments where the rover becomes so complicated, such as densely forested or low-g planets.\r\nThe story is pretty interesting, in my opinion, and certain elements of how it incorporates the new game plus system INTO the story is fun, however the quests get real tedious when you gotta redo them over and over, and this is a game that's geared towards having the player start over with NG+ again and again, getting stronger and stronger and unlocking special content over the course of MULTIPLE playthroughs. For a slower and more methodical player like me this is infuriating as much as it is clever. The game has no seamlessness to it, I'm always staring at at least three loading screens per hour of playtime and for a game like this that is just exhausting and frustrating.\r\nI didn't come to Starfield as a Bethesda fanboy, I never played elder scrolls or fallout though I was aware of both. I came into this fresh and I feel just as let down as the people who came in with those games under their belts and in their minds. I don't know whether to say they dreamed too big and failed to deliver or dreamed big and got lazy, but it feels like one of the two. There's a lot of empty nothingness and wasted potential spread around in this game, and unlike Cyberpunk 2077 (which I love to death) they seem to have just thrown their hands up and decided we the players/customers must be the problem. This is a game I'll dust off once a year and play for a few hours just cause I feel bored and don't know what else to play.","timestamp_created":1766105084,"timestamp_updated":1766105084,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":3,"votes_funny":0,"weighted_vote_score":"0.543108880519866943","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[]},{"recommendationid":"217154051","author":{"steamid":"76561198118146419","personaname":"Sentient.Waffle","persona_status":"online","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198118146419/","num_games_owned":306,"num_reviews":9,"playtime_forever":3707,"playtime_last_two_weeks":0,"playtime_at_review":3669,"last_played":1769865951,"avatar":"d4371bdba4c8c3484bc5b88edc6ee3c15d2bc250"},"language":"english","review":"Everyone knows now that people hated starfield so much they turned it into another game. Starfield is absolutely NOT the type of game that would appeal to someone who needs a thrill per minute, or a constant dopamine drip-feed. Starfield is not a first-person shooter game, it's not a third-person shooter game, it's not a space simulator, it's not a spaceship combat game, it's not a physics sandbox; Starfield is an RPG for people who like to use their imagination to develop their own immersive gameplay experience. If you're looking for an opportunity to spend untold hours weaving the story that you're \"writing\" for your character into the loosely woven fabric of the main game narrative, you'll love this game. If you're looking for an opportunity to attach your personal style of adventuring to a game world that seemingly never runs out of things to do, NPCs to interact with, places to explore, and stories to tell - you'll love this game. If you're looking for a game which will challenge you more in terms of understanding how all of the various game mechanics and systems come together to benefit your experience, instead of the repetitive \"challenge\" of fighting yet another boss character or racing against a mission timer, you'll love this game.\r\n\r\nIf you enter into this game with the expectation to be \"blown away\" by every point of interest that you visit, you'll be disappointed. Bethesda doesn't mind letting the gamer feel underwhelmed because it provides balance for all of the points of interest that certainly aren't underwhelming. If you enter into this game with the expectation that every decision you make will result in something exciting, or that your plans will always work out the way you expected them to, you will be disappointed. Bethesda doesn't mind letting you spend 5-10 hours of gameplay trying to accomplish something, just to find out that you didn't properly account for every detail of what you've been trying to do, and now your plan won't work. This intensifies the role-playing experience by reminding you that you are just another character in the game world, and this game world will not bend to whatever silly idea you come up with. If you're looking for a game which will simply lead you from the beginning to the end, with neatly arranged story content and events along the way, you will be disappointed. Starfield is myriad story loops that tie into other story loops, which connect to more story loops, which lead back around to more story loops. \"Forward progress\" is something that you have to measure for yourself, based on the way you want to experience the game, because this game will not drive you in any particular direction. As a matter of fact, this game is constantly pulling you in ten DIFFERENT directions and you'll have to remain on task if you want to see any forward progress.\r\n\r\nNot everyone enjoys a game like Starfield. It isn't true that everyone enjoys Minecraft, or GTA5, or Cyberpunk 2077, or Farming Simulator 25, or War Thunder. Nevertheless, something that I've seen to be obviously true through the many, many abysmally negative reviews about Starfield is that not everyone even understands how to play this game. When Fallout 3 came out, I bought it right away and hated it right away. Years later, my friends insisted that Fallout 4 was \"way better\" and I'd definitely enjoy this one. I bought it right away and hated it right away. It literally took me all the way until 2021/2022 to slow down, watch someone else play the game on YouTube, and try to figure out what people thought they were getting out of a game like Fallout. I was always so accustomed to games like Syphon Filter, Medal of Honor, Battlefield, and Halo that I genuinely couldn't understand why anyone would rather be a wimp who is trampled to death by oversized cockroaches and harpooned to death by mosquitoes instead of a Superhero like Master Chief. Once I finally understood how to play Fallout, I reinstalled it immediately and fell in love with it immediately. This leads me back around to what I said at the beginning - Starfield is NOT: No Man's Sky, Star Citizen, Space Engineers, Elite Dangerous, Cubic Odyssey, or any of the other space-based games you might be familiar with. Starfield is a Bethesda RPG in space. Fire up that imagination and get ready for adventure!","timestamp_created":1776343632,"timestamp_updated":1776343632,"voted_up":true,"votes_up":4,"votes_funny":0,"weighted_vote_score":"0.541728794574737549","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[{"reaction_type":31,"count":1}]},{"recommendationid":"223040338","author":{"steamid":"76561198050398691","personaname":"Metapharstic","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/id/thefilmfiend/","num_games_owned":1964,"num_reviews":33,"playtime_forever":5665,"playtime_last_two_weeks":2480,"playtime_at_review":4011,"last_played":1776530864,"avatar":"be65902c43f582d8c064c0fed73dceaf885b6455"},"language":"english","review":"I'm back to this game. Don't recommend. The story is so boring and cliche its like a toddlers book.\nMy first run through had a game breaking bug happen on my ship where I could not get people to leave it or new ones to enter. So i could no longer upgrade or get a new ship one of the \"most\" important thing they advertised for this game. They said they fixed now but not while I was playing it, so oh well\nSecond run through i explored these hundreds of planets they bragged about having in their game. Well they were not lying when they said they would be empty. There are some structures dotted around planets but they are generic. However some do have some stories going on in these structures, actually in fact for some reason a lot of different planets were having the exact SAME story going in these structures. That's right Bethesda themselves got so bored making this game they copied and pasted EVERYTHING. The same structures i can understand but having them all have the same notes, the same terminals with the same terminal entries and in some case the same fricken loot. They clearly did not care when making this game\n\nAnd if youre looking for a choices matter game like Bethesda said this was, go some where else. Your choices in fact do not matter and they all lead to the exact same ending. You also never see any of the impacts you made.\n\nLastly *kinda spoilers* and this really bothers me. There's magic in this game. Which is then funny considering the fact that all these planets are empty cause they wanted it to be like real life, right? Sooo why is there magic then? like TIME bending magic. They completely contradict themselves at every turn with this game. Worst part too is that the magic is, for the most part, useless besides quest related stuff you will forget you have it most of the time cause the spells aren't really helpful, in my opinion.","timestamp_created":1775084134,"timestamp_updated":1775084134,"voted_up":false,"votes_up":10,"votes_funny":1,"weighted_vote_score":"0.541610896587371826","comment_count":0,"steam_purchase":true,"received_for_free":false,"refunded":false,"written_during_early_access":false,"primarily_steam_deck":false,"app_release_date":"1693958400","reactions":[]},{"recommendationid":"212791315","author":{"steamid":"76561198045530829","personaname":"Bloodlordt","persona_status":"offline","profile_url":"https://steamcommunity.com/id/Bloodlordt/","num_games_owned":0,"num_reviews":12,"playtime_forever":6062,"playtime_last_two_weeks":0,"playtime_at_review":6062,"last_played":1765274283,"avatar":"a8c5d92192f114f5ed05a03a86e53facc7d22a27"},"language":"english","review":"Im a big fan of the Bethesda Games, even tho the Inventory is ♥♥♥♥ in every game. :D\nThey crafted a gigantic world with endless options but still, something seems to be missing.
