I wanted to like it so, so much. I kept coming back to check in, tried mods, God help me I even paid for the first DLC.
Nothing has been able to save it. Don't buy this game, just don't.
THE GOOD:
It's pretty. I'll give them that, it looks good.
THE BAD:
Everything else. Lord, where to start? There are lots of in-depth reviews that discuss it in detail, but to try and summarize:
- The gameplay is repetitive and boring, whether it's the ship combat, the limited number of POIs, the radiant quests, the fetch quests, the game is extremely boring. There's not much to do besides gawk at the pretty imagery
- The personalities of the NPCs are trash: they're boring, the VAs sound boring, nobody has an interesting hook or anything that gives me a reason to care about them. Not even the robot has any charm.
- The mechanics are unbalanced and broken: melee combat is awful (and unarmed combat is beyond pathetic, there aren't even brass knuckles to use as an upgrade), there's very few energy weapons compared to ballistic, and the talent tree is so obtuse and irritating to unlock that many of the top tier abilities take forever to get. For most of the game, you don't feel like you're specializing or doing anything unique. It doesn't matter what weapons or armor you use, what playstyle you want, the game feels basically the same.
- The biggest offender, by far, is the writing. I will say right now that Emil needs to either be fired or reassigned, because his "players are going to ignore the writing anyway, so quality doesn't matter" philosophy is poison, and this game is proof of what happens when your head writer is allowed to have an entire game abide by his "good writing is a waste of time" mindset. The plot holes and contrivances start right from the beginning: you don't get a say in joining the main questline. Every objection you make is countered with "Nah, you don't want to do that, go on and do the other thing", and almost no time was spent thinking through the larger ramifications of how things progress. The writing can be both cartoonishly bad and infuriatingly inflexible, and it's not just the main quest (though since you'll encounter the main quest railroading literally within your first hour, that's pretty egregious).
The overuse of making some characters unkillable has reached its peak here: rather than deal with player choice, Bethesda just opted for sturdier guardrails. Do you want your fellow gangsters to say "Screw this, we're not making a deal to become cops" on Neon? Too bad, quest over. Do you want to put a bullet in the luxury resort CEO's head and tell the lost colonists you'll help them land wherever they damn well please? Nope, too bad, you're either going to tell them to get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ or become indentured servants for the rich guy in charge. Do you want to not join Constellation and do your own thing? Nope, you're in Constellation, which just so happens to have no hierarchy, no presence outside one building in one city, no obligations, basically just exists in the most limited sense of the word...and you're a member. Because they gave you a spaceship. Don't like the free ship or do you feel a bit cheated that you don't earn it or get to pick your own? You can't sell it or get rid of it, ever. You don't have an option to tell them "Keep the 'free' ship, I don't want to be a part of your group, and I don't want you holding it over me,", you just always have it parked as a backup, because you're in Constellation now, just because.
The writing affects so much more than this, though, because it bleeds into everything else beyond just choices. Take your Constellation companions: they're all Lawful Good Super Nice Carebears, who get very very mad at you (not that you can tell from their tone of voice, I swear mods that use AI to replace or expand their dialogue actually work because their inflection in the vanilla game is so bland that you can't tell the difference between AI generated voiceovers and the human beings who recorded the source dialogue)....but you're told explicitly that Constellation is first and foremost basically space archaeologists but with flexible morals. They care most of all about finding relics and exploring the unknown, and you're told that your methods ultimately aren't as important as the results. This could have actually worked well and made for some interesting quests and moral quandaries, but instead you just have cookie-cutter goody two-shoes personalities who whine when you actually do anything besides The Right Thing (TM).
Emil believes, clearly, that every player is going to skip every line of dialogue to get back to button mashing and looting, like a drug addled spider monkey in withdrawal, and because of that expectation the writing is complete trash, inconsistent, and sometimes outright contradictory or nonsensical.
Grav drives can destroy entire atmospheres? Boy, I guess it's a good thing no terrorists who hate New Atlantis, like say some serpent worshipping extremists, have access to spaceships, or else with a few modifications they could just park some ships near the planet and destroy its atmosphere, too.
There literally isn't the space to go on.
This game's ideas feel like people just made a list of stuff they wanted to see in the game and then shoved it in there with no thought about if it made sense or how it fit into the world. This is the perfect example of where a writing team would come in handy: they could work on the concepts, the lore and background, and think about how they fit together and why. Instead, we get a game where someone said "Let's put future fast food in there, and space cowboys because I loved Firefly, and of course we need space pirates, also smuggling needs to be a thing because Han Solo is cool, and we gotta have a robot sidekick...", and everything was dutifully shoved in without any thought whatsoever.
Don't buy Starfield. Play something else. Play anything else. Write your own sci-fi and read it to yourself. Anything is a better use of your time and your money.
Also, Bethesda, I am begging you: stop making video games. Please, I'm a huge fan of your properties, and I'm telling you it is clear you guys are much more interested in your engine than making good games, and that's fine. Do what Epic did, switch to making your engine for other companies. License the IPs you own to companies that don't think writing is for losers, and pour your hearts into the engine you love so dearly.
If Starfield had been a demo template for a new game engine, I'd be impressed with it, and the terrible writing would be excusable as "This isn't a real game, it's a product demo for the engine". As it is, I'm never buying another of your games again. Congratulations, Bethesda, you're getting the Ubisoft treatment from me.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tQuite possibly the most disappointing Bethesda game to date. This review is for those that have enjoyed previous games by Bethesda and are on the fence about whether this will satisfy that itch. It will not. I gave it a chance. After several dozen hours, I thought, 'Surely the end game will be fun. I'll have cool guns. The story will have opened up with cool space dragons or something wild. Maybe an intergalactic war of some kind?' No. None of those things happen. Nothing cool happens here. You will walk on a random moon and see some generic bad guys in the distance. They're oddly placed on a tower that you swear you cleared two hours before hand.
I was initially excited about Starfield's release because I appreciated the idea of the developers working on a new IP. Science fiction is a perfect setting with thousands of stories to be inspired by, but this just did not come together because of repetitive gameplay and poor storytelling.
#1, The Story:
You would think Bethesda would learn from previous games that their story telling is a bit weak. Characters are still the same card-board cut outs that lore dump when you talk to them, and they reveal little about their own motivations or interests. It's like reading a novel but every character is either there to move the plot forward or to speak about their time on planet I-don't-care during the alien famine era of -I-really-don't-care, so you just spam click through the monotone dialogue as the NPC's stare through you before assigning a quest to fetch the I-don't-care stone on Mars, which does nothing to change anything for you or Mars..
Honestly, it's been a couple years and I really don't remember the plot. In the first 5 minutes of gameplay, you discover a rock which does some mysterious science stuff or something, and some dude is like, 'Hey I don't know you from a hole in a wall, but here's my ship because I trust you for plot reasons.' This wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that everything is presented so seriously and cinematic. Anyway, I forgot about the rest of the plot since then. I think you develop super powers like you're space Dragon Born, and you're going to save the universe or something.
#2, The Gameplay:
On the surface, it wasn't so bad. I liked the combat of Fallout, and that's mostly what you get. You get lots of guns, and the fun addition of modified gravity. However, melee combat is still overly simplistic, like playing Half-life 2 with a crowbar that has a power attack. Why are we still doing melee this way?
The skill tree..oh, dear. I don't know what happened here but it feels underwhelming. Leveling up no longer feels interesting. There are few interesting choices here. Nothing that dramatically changes your character to fit any kind of role-playing you might have in mind.
Exploration is probably the weakest point. It's why we like Bethesda games. You love to find that random dungeon in Skyrim because there's usually something redeeming to make it worthwhile. Unfortunately, exploration falls apart here because Bethesda took the genius idea of using procedural generation and started injecting it throughout the Starfield universe. Unless you're a former crack addict with a poor memory, around hour 10 you will see the same tower of bandits with the same layout, with the same loot, on the same planet only a few feet away from the last tower you cleared.
To make matters worse, the quests are often classic Bethesda fetch quests, like we're still in 2011. I was on a cyberpunk world on some oil rig turned into a city. I took quests from some corporation, which had me running across numerous loading zones in different buildings, all while providing me with a soulless storyline to accompany. I didn't finish the quest.
I thought they might implement a cool colony feature like Fallout 4, but it ended up being a step backward. It felt mostly cosmetic, and I didn't feel motivated to build on it. This was the most disappointing feature and felt more like a step backward from Fallout 4.
The ship gameplay is really bad. It's basically an on-rails arcade shooter without any real strategy or tactics needed. Also, every time you send your ship into hyperspace, they show this epic cinematic of your ship blasting into space with this totally epic music, but it gets repetitive after the 300th time and you start looking through menus to toggle skipping it, but then you learn you can't, so you wonder if a developer was speaking to Todd Howard and was like, 'Todd, I don't think the players want to see this every time. Maybe we give them the option to turn this off,' and Todd Howard looked at the developer with demon eyes and didn't say a word because it was probably Todd's terrible idea, so the developer shrunk back into his seat, and that's why you have to experience this every time you go anywhere in the game, ever.
#3, Sound & Music:
It's good. It's the one redeeming quality that makes you feel like you're in the midst of some epic sci-fi story. The music sounds like some John Williams Star Wars soundtrack. The guns and the atmosphere hit right. However, the voice acting is pretty uninspired. I feel like we're back in Oblivion with the monotone voices again, and it just encourages the player to speed through the lore dumps of planet I-really-don't-care.
Anyway, that should be enough for a fair warning not to buy this unless you have a fetish for disappointment.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

In the first 5 minutes of gameplay, you discover a rock which does some mysterious science stuff or something, and some dude is like, 'Hey I don't know you from a hole in a wall, but here's my ship because I trust you for plot reasons.' This wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that everything is presented so seriously and cinematic. Anyway, I forgot about the rest of the plot since then. I think you develop super powers like you're space Dragon Born, and you're going to save the universe or something.
#2, The Gameplay:
On the surface, it wasn't so bad. I liked the combat of Fallout, and that's mostly what you get. You get lots of guns, and the fun addition of modified gravity. However, melee combat is still overly simplistic, like playing Half-life 2 with a crowbar that has a power attack. Why are we still doing melee this way?
The skill tree..oh, dear. I don't know what happened here but it feels underwhelming. Leveling up no longer feels interesting. There are few interesting choices here. Nothing that dramatically changes your character to fit any kind of role-playing you might have in mind.
Exploration is probably the weakest point. It's why we like Bethesda games. You love to find that random dungeon in Skyrim because there's usually something redeeming to make it worthwhile. Unfortunately, exploration falls apart here because Bethesda took the genius idea of using procedural generation and started injecting it throughout the Starfield universe. Unless you're a former crack addict with a poor memory, around hour 10 you will see the same tower of bandits with the same layout, with the same loot, on the same planet only a few feet away from the last tower you cleared.
To make matters worse, the quests are often classic Bethesda fetch quests, like we're still in 2011. I was on a cyberpunk world on some oil rig turned into a city. I took quests from some corporation, which had me running across numerous loading zones in different buildings, all while providing me with a soulless storyline to accompany. I didn't finish the quest.
I thought they might implement a cool colony feature like Fallout 4, but it ended up being a step backward. It felt mostly cosmetic, and I didn't feel motivated to build on it. This was the most disappointing feature and felt more like a step backward from Fallout 4.
The ship gameplay is really bad. It's basically an on-rails arcade shooter without any real strategy or tactics needed. Also, every time you send your ship into hyperspace, they show this epic cinematic of your ship blasting into space with this totally epic music, but it gets repetitive after the 300th time and you start looking through menus to toggle skipping it, but then you learn you can't, so you wonder if a developer was speaking to Todd Howard and was like, 'Todd, I don't think the players want to see this every time. Maybe we give them the option to turn this off,' and Todd Howard looked at the developer with demon eyes and didn't say a word because it was probably Todd's terrible idea, so the developer shrunk back into his seat, and that's why you have to experience this every time you go anywhere in the game, ever.
#3, Sound & Music:
It's good. It's the one redeeming quality that makes you feel like you're in the midst of some epic sci-fi story. The music sounds like some John Williams Star Wars soundtrack. The guns and the atmosphere hit right. However, the voice acting is pretty uninspired. I feel like we're back in Oblivion with the monotone voices again, and it just encourages the player to speed through the lore dumps of planet I-really-don't-care.
Anyway, that should be enough for a fair warning not to buy this unless you have a fetish for disappointment.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

This game IS flawed, and it DOES have it’s share of legitimate issues & deficiencies. However, Starfield it is so much more then what the internet would have you believe. It legitimately saddens me how many people will not get to experience what the game DOES bring.
Yes, it suffers from animations that are this point are an understatement to say are outdated. But it’s also a ridiculously beautiful game that not only had the best fidelity & lighting in their entire portfolio of games (Seriously this game put a major hurting on my screenshots folder lol) but also delivered one of the best executions of that “NASA-Punk” style art direction I’ve seen in a game.
Yes, it’s writing is still very much Bethesda writing, with all the face-palms & inconsistency in quality that has historically come with that. But it’s also a game whose writing did have several really cool bright spots, with in particular it’s UC Vanguard storyline being one of the better storylines they’ve delivered since Oblivion. No, it’s not Morrowind or Oblivion quality writing, but it’s closer to Oblivion then it is to Fallout 4 quality imo.
Yes, it has load screens. Not all buildings have them, but enough certainly do. And yes, it’s a game that suffers from a reliance on procedural planetary surfaces which does deliver a hit to the traditional style of Bethesda “Wander freely” exploration. But it’s also a game whose handcrafted content (Of which there is still TONS, do not be fooled) is some of the best and most interesting environmental/level design work in the company’s history. Paired with a ridiculously fun combat system, (Including FINALLY a stealth system that’s not just “get high enough level that you become undetectable”) that’s the most enjoyable they’ve delivered in their “Gun oriented” franchises? The game is just flat out fun to play and lose yourself into.
Yes, individually, other games do certain things better. Like NMS’ procedural exploration is more seamless. Elite Dangerous has a more in-depth flight system. Mass Effect has a much better quality story. However no one game quite has the versatility that Starfield does, it’s definitely a “Jack of all trades” ordeal, even if it doesn’t master them all of them. If you want a full fledged RPG with a character builder, variety of factions and hundreds of storylines? It’s here. If you want a super in-depth ship building and customization system to let creative juices flow? It’s here. You wanna ignore story and just go out and survey planets, scanning lifeforms and biomes? It’s here. You wanna start a mining and manufacturing operation, mining asteroids, colonizing planets and setting up factories and trade-links? It’s here. You wanna be pirate/outlaw, preying on trade ships and innocents? It’s here. Wanna be a Mandalorian style Bounty Hunter? It’s here. You wanna get into ground fights, ship fights, hell even disable enemy engines, board a ship to turn a ship fight a ground fight? It’s here. All under one roof. It really does feel like multiple games in one. For those who are only interested in one specific style or aspect out of a space game, sure that could be a weakness.
But if you’re looking for a space setting that allows you to pursue a variety of space-related gameplay types? It’s a very short list of games that competes with the versatility of what Starfield allows you to do in one game.
A couple other things I’d like to point out:
1) Performance was kind of shocking for a BGS game. By far, the least buggy Bethesda game I’ve ever played, with zero game breaking bugs, zero obstructive glitches, and a grand total of 3 crashes in 350+ hours of my playthrough (Admittedly 1 of these was due a mod.) It also ran at rock solid FPS at High/Ultra settings on a good but not crazy PC build (Specs should be attached).
2) The Ship-Builder system is OUTSTANDING. Piecing custom ships from scratch, piece by piece, shaping and molding it however you see fit, selectively tailoring components and then being able to fully decorate, highly customizable (and functional!) interiors is a creative players dream. Intuitive system too, that feels easy to grasp right from the jump. I've had so much fun designing ships in this game. It’s kind of a game in it’s own. Outpost Building however, while a thing in this game, felt like a step down from F04, with reduced mechanics and a building system that felt more clunky and a PITA to use.
3) The Expansions/DLC are a mixed bag. Shattered Space is a return to their more usual approach, with the expansion taking place on a single planet, and exploration you can freely walk to and from, but it also focuses heavily on a super strict religious cult of a culture which can feel suffocating depending on your character. Terran Armada is to be blunt, short and weak. Free-Lanes update however was transformative for its positive impact on Seamless Inter-System Space Exploration & emergent gameplay moments and the game benefits massively for it. (Free-Lanes is also FREE).
4) Every BGS fan has been (or should be) aware of the gradual downward trend of RPG aspects in their games with seemingly each entry getting more and more watered down. Starfield thankfully was finally a step back in the right direction, and an improvement over their last couple games instead of another regression. Skill-Checks in dialogue made their much welcomed returned finally, as did the return of things like origin backgrounds, character traits/flaws and the game had a nice thick skill tree to dive into, with a wide variety of both combat, and non-combat skills. Don’t get it twisted, we’re nowhere near back to Morrowind/FONV/FO3 levels yet, but it’s encouraging to see them finally at least trend upwards on this again rather then ever downward like it had been. Hoping they carry that momentum to even more RPG improvements for TES6.
TLDR: Don’t get tricked by the click & headline obsessed frenzy of modern gaming media. Game isn’t perfect, and does play a bit differently then traditional BGS games, but is still a good game with a lot to offer.
8/10, would 100% recommend for any Space Game fans or BGS fans.

What a mess. Bethesda tried to do so many things all at once with this, and very little of it worked. I'm eleven hours in, the game's plot has only barely, barely started to inch forward, and most of the gameplay so far has been a very pretty walking simulator. Great big open planetscapes with nothing to do in them and atmosphere that wears off in a couple minutes. A ship that's too cramped to do anything in. A mechanic by which you can expand that ship. I realize "long game" is now the measure of quality, but this feels like someone's put the thing into a candy puller and started stretching. Casually phased through the wall into space, fell off the edge of it, and then started shooting at my mandatory companion who also phased through a solid wall to go shout angrily at this guy while shooting at him without a spacesuit on, on the Moon.

I'm eleven hours in, the game's plot has only barely, barely started to inch forward, and most of the gameplay so far has been a very pretty walking simulator. Great big open planetscapes with nothing to do in them and atmosphere that wears off in a couple minutes. A ship that's too cramped to do anything in. A mechanic by which you can expand that ship. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI really wanted to like starfield. i did, honest, i've been playing bethesda games since i was a kid (before trump's first term, if that says anything). but starfield.....is like this. the TLDR version is: bethesda took the formula they had and promptly chucked it out the window and made something that is clunky, frustrating, and altogether painful as an experience. From the shallow writing and starship combat that is altogether infuriating, to the comically grindy amount of time required to do something as simple as modify your weapons. not to mention the creations present for this game, 90 percent of them are paid mods so enjoy shilling out money.
think of bethesda as your favorite burger joint. it's the place you've been going to for ages, and although you might order something different off their menu, you still have a overarching expectation of what they make, burgers, in some capacity. now, one day you go into your favorite burger joint and find that the beloved burger's you've enjoyed for your entire life have been replaced, by tacos. the chef (a man by the name of Todd) explains to you that tacos are better than burgers! and after all, burgers and tacos have beef in them! so they're basically the same thing!
but, you wanted a burger, it's what you've grown to expect from Big Todd's Bethesda Burger Shack, and the taco is just too radically different than your beloved burger. but todd wants to try something new, so you humor him, but the things that made you love his burgers in the first place, aren't in this taco, at all. the ground beef is bland, and although you like tacos, you go to Big Todd's for burgers, not tacos. oh yeah, and 90 percent of the "toppings" are charged with your order, so if you want ANYTHING other than a bland taco made by Todd, you're SOL.
that, that is what starfield is like. it's like they took the skyrim idea and said "let's make it in space!". skyrim is indeed, a good game, (like a burger). but starfield is the taco, sure, taco's are good, but you expect burgers from a burger joint.
6/10 because being able to make a galaxy spanning beater is neato but still doesn't write off the other piles of wack stuff that comes from this. hopefully if i keep going maybe it'll grow on me, but man, this is a decent into madness, Howard style.

Combat is lack luster, puzzles are just fly toward balls of light, companions are written poorly, exploration never feels rewarding, and the biggest issue for me POI's pull from a small pool leading to seeing the exact same location with the exact same pieces of text on multiple different planets. I had hoped they would fix some of these issues given time, but they have opted for hoping the modding community will do it for them. After close to 300hrs and the feeling of having given it more than a sufficient amount of my time since release, I can not recommend this game unless it is on a steep sale.

The story is bland, predictable and tired, the characters are uninteresting, the quests are often absurdly brief, and for a game of this size, there are far too few cities / towns, and too little to do in the ones that exist.
And for the record, it's not that Bethesda didn't appear to 'try' when they made this game. Playing it, even unmodded, there is clearly lots of care and attention to detail that was put into it - however, it feels as if the game was too big of a concept, and it feels like they didn't quite figure out what it was they were trying to make before the game was finished.
HOWEVER
The modding community for this game is fantastic. Maybe you don't want to rely on mods, or maybe you don't like the idea of paying modders for their work, but that's an entirely seperate discussion. If those issues are not a problem for you, then this game definitly has potential.

Tons of freedom, a huge universe to explore, ship building, base building, endless quests and things to do, engaging companions, tons of looting, a great slew of play options to customize experience and difficulty

Exploration isn't like their other games, the thrill of traveling from place to place is gone and replaced with a sort of "fast travel" system that revolves around space flight.
Weapon design is pretty bad, some guns feel great but far too many feel weak
Space battles are a bit too complex, it's kind of amazing a space exploration game could make space engagements feel unfun at times. I'm just not a fan of the power allocation system.

I still can't stand playing it for extended periods of time. It's a worse No Man's Sky, except in No Man's Sky the developers actually care about their product. I'm keeping it for when a Nuclear Sunset or STALKER: GAMMA style modpack comes around and makes this game good, without having half its modlist be about making the love interests "THICC" or whatever Gateway to Stars does.
The story of Starfield treats you like a toddler playing with blocks and calls you an explorer for walking for fifteen minutes to touch shiny rocks. If you engage with the NG+ mechanic and want to relive the main story again, characters explicitly call you sick or demented. Main Story villains have absolutely nonsensical reasons to exist, an entire plotline centered around Terrormorphs is only there because, despite being studied in a lab, nobody connects the dots that one creature is remotely related to another one. (UC Vanguard questline, by the way) Freestar Collective is playing with things that big companies do TODAY and has no nuance to any of it. Despite being able to knock characters unconscious with stun guns, you HAVE to kill the final villain, and characters pretend you had no other choice. The quest won't even progress unless you hard-kill him, and then someone goes "if only we could've brought him in alive."
Beyond the story, you can make outposts. If you engage with the NG+ mechanic and want to relive the main story again, characters explicitly call you sick or demented. Main Story villains have absolutely nonsensical reasons to exist, an entire plotline centered around Terrormorphs is only there because, despite being studied in a lab, nobody connects the dots that one creature is remotely related to another one. (UC Vanguard questline, by the way) Freestar Collective is playing with things that big companies do TODAY and has no nuance to any of it. Despite being able to knock characters unconscious with stun guns, you HAVE to kill the final villain, and characters pretend you had no other choice. The quest won't even progress unless you hard-kill him, and then someone goes "if only we could've brought him in alive."

Now you get this game, and this is basically a toned down agenda-driven version of Dragon age Veilguard or well concord if you want obesity.

You want a good looking character, sorry can't let you do that. Lin unfortunately forgets how to run all the time. You either travel with the loading screen or like why would you want to land yourself on planet in game about space, right?! The UI is so unintuitive, that you keep pressing keys and going into menus to achieve the smallest things.
