1000xRESIST has the best narrative I’ve ever seen in a game. And I love story-focused games, I play lots of them. It’s in no way a perfect GAME – animations can be janky, the hub is frustratingly confusing at times, but it didn’t matter because the idea and message are so powerful.
I’d say the game is mostly about generational trauma, the weight of memories, forms and cost of resistance in an authoritarian society, violent nature of human language, and mothers and daughters. And then mothers and daughters again and daughters of those daughters and daughters of daughters, and it cycles infinitely.
There are a lot of other themes, this game has many layers. It’s impossible to name all of them, but you get the idea.
The way they are presented is very artistic, even theatrical. You get to see separate scenes, sometimes they’re chronologically connected, sometimes they belong to a different timeline. And then you do a bit of detective job, putting it together, trying to get the full picture.
At the end, it still looks blurry and ambiguous. I loved and hated it at the same time because, of course I wanna know everything, but I also respect the trust in players to interpret things on their own.
What else? The game has really cool visual moments I enjoyed, and there’s a particular language puzzle that made me stare at the screen in disbelief and awe.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI went into this ready to be unimpressed because the first chapter's setup has a lot of fairly obnoxious clichés, a colony of clones of a 2nd generation Asian immigrant living in Toronto with overwrought angst from overbearing parents and wayward ambiguously bisexual high school romance before an Evangelion-alien-mediated apocalypse. Starts with a "bet you're wondering how I got here" flashback.
But it's incredibly good. The main characters aren't obnoxious, every chapter is different and fresh, the mystery is very well-paced, and the game isn't embarrassed to be a game. It's a narrative experience so don't go into it expecting tons of action. This is up there with games like Norco for me, it plays with emotions in a wonderfully organic way.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tokay first of all how do people complete this game in less than 12 hours??? anyway, this may be my favorite narrative game ever. it really is about everything but manages to arrange the complex themes together in a way that gives just enough at a time and weaves itself together in a beautiful culmination at the end. this made me cry several times. i had my gripes with certain aspects of the gameplay but any criticism pales and dissipates in the light of how much i loved this story and the characters and their conflicts. my sisters, my beloved sisters. my parents. my children. no story has reached the center of my heart with such a closeness like this one has. hekki grace. i would write more but i think i am still processing. \t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I don’t really like pure walking sims and tend to prefer games like Tacoma or What Remains of Edith Finch. 1000xResist starts strong: the first location, the school, is the most interesting from a gameplay perspective. I am always happy to see a time-shifting mechanic. After that, the time shifting stays, but it is mostly used to move through time in a linear fashion and only rarely to explore an area in different time periods.
With gameplay taking a back seat, the main focus of 1000xResist is the story. It is quite unique, as it puts you into a society made entirely of clones of one girl. Granted, the story has a good deal of anime craziness, but it never goes too far over the top. It has a few plot twists up its sleeve, and because of the non-linearity, the game keeps your interest while you try to piece it all together. Where it starts to lose me is its heavy influence from Asian immigrant family experiences and the trauma surrounding the Hong Kong protests. It is not something I can honestly relate to.

BUT STILL, after experiencing the full story you will see it was 1000 times worth the time. I've never played through a story so nuanced, rich and detailed. I loved letting this game simmer in my mind between sessions and ponder the questions it asks.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tIt's very captivating story with so strong hooks it's like a book you cant put down, but I would recommend you take your time and not rush! The level of grief, despair and uncertainty can get a little heavy on one go, plus the game is very strongly on the metaphorical level almost all the time, which can also drain you if you don't take breaks and let the story breathe.
It has some psychological horror tropes I didn't appreciate, but it's first part is so strong it could've justified playing and paying for the game on it's entirety. I'm still haunted by some moments that occurred naturally by me just exploring the school.
