I started playing this because I saw a Daryl Talks Games video where it appeared. He praised it and it looked interesting enough for me to try it. Now, I write this hoping to be the reason someone else decides to play this game.
While this hasn't been my first rodeo with visual novels or (principally) narrative games, I have to admit it's the first time a game (as in any genre or any work that uses "a game" as the medium) hasn't let me sleep. And not only because I've been playing it into the darkest hours of the night, several nights, skipping on some rejuvenating sleep, but mostly because when I forced myself to stop playing and go to bed I couldn't keep my mind away from it. I just kept exploring possibilities, theories, trying to put together the pieces of what I had just experienced to form a cohesive picture... It was GREAT.
I think the writing, story and it's telling are SUBLIME. I find myself quite torn, since I want to do the game justice and review it's narrative in depth, picking away at it's characters, their motives, personalities... However I'm trying to convince you to PLAY it and I know just how wrong it would be of me to rob you of the experience of living this first-hand. So, telling you that the narrative elements of this game are SUBLIME will have to do.
Now, about a "controversial" topic, the gameplay. While it's not mechanically challenging, or challenging in general (as there are a few "puzzles" but they are quite trivial), the gameplay serves as an aid towards the storytelling. It's a tool, it has a function, it's there to serve the narrative and to link both you, as the "watcher", and the game, as the "watched". This wording might make it seem like the gameplay is passive; but nothing further from the truth. I think you'll realize what I mean as you play the game and how YOU end up being tied into this world through the gameplay.
Admittedly, I'm quite partial to minimalist, futuristic and "aseptic" aesthetics so I won't say much about that specific choice other than it's cohesive with the story. But I was blown away by the magnitude of work and detail put into designing the spaces and clothing. Even the usual "filler" items in a stage seem like they have been purposely put in place in a specific way to convey something, to tell a story by themselves.
I was also pleasantly surprised by the voice acting. Pretty much every single line of text you'll read is dubbed. And, honestly it's pretty good. Voice acting is one of those things that sadly don't get much attention unless they aren't done good enough, this is a clear case of the opposite.

this game is a masterfully told story that rearranges moments so the punches hit the hardest. it's not particularly challenging or difficult to understand as a video and a story respectively, and some would say that it'd serve better as a book, but i appreciate the care that went into designing the time-travel sequences for pacing the "puzzle" sequences especially in the very beginning. i wish it was used more often, but as it stands it might've ruined the fairly tight pacing the story has after the setup.

Games normally take 60-80 hours to explore even half the themes this game explores. This game is also just so phenomenally presented despite its clearly limited resources.
