\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm over 70 years of age and I've played many games both on Steam & Ubsoft platforms over the years. Game technology come along in leaps & bounds, S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chornobyl, with the new v2.0 update has the best graphics I've ever seen, in any game.

This game gives users options, which changes your path through the game. I've restarted the games twice while learning the newonces, It's a war game, without being at war (sort of... haha). You can spend hours in the world, going from one place to another, collectiong, interacting with anomalies, mutants, rivel factions & friendlies.

Let me just preface that I did not expect a miracle, I haven't played Stalker 2 Since its initial release, which in terms of performance and bugs, was an "ordeal" to say the least. Over the years now I've seen it receive countless updates and bugfixes so I figured it would be a good time to jump into the zone again to get a more stable and consistent immersive stalker experience.

So I downloaded the update, purchased the DLC and started a new Save. After about 7 hours, I've got notes.

A few pointers for 2.0:
+ Personally, The performance is better by about 10-15% or so. This was sorely needed and greatly appreciated. I respect them doing a mostly "performance" focused patch.
+ The visual updates and the lighting in particular are a genuine improvement and I can now distinguish objects, NPC's and terrain as opposed to the visual soup that it was previously.
+ Additions in the form of Guns, attachments and binoculars are always great, though a little underwhelming given the wait and the fact that itemization in the zone is still very uninteresting.

That is about it.

If you at first dropped the game and your only complaint was the visuals and some slight performance issues, this is a fine time to try again.

It really does not warrant another playthrough if you expect a Stalker 2 (+) type of experience and calling it 2.0 is in my opinion a bit dramatic and reads more like a publicity stunt to draw eyeballs more than anything else.

Now, In this second attempt on a fresh save, I'm about 7-ish Hours into the Main quest and half the time you are not certain if the game is bugged or not in tandem with nonsensical AI behavior, which results in an excruciatingly confusing and annoying experience. Pair this with strange, jarring and almost comical scenarios unfolding in front of your very eyes because of the 100m bubble.

Here is a personal example from last night: You are mindlessly walking in the zone, no real plan and suddenly you find yourself having a little moment to yourself, the lighting hits just right, the music looms subtly and ominously in the background, you approach an interesting looking POI in search for loot, immersion is creeping in, you are slowly but surely building some excitement and tension for what is to come. Then, a massive firefight spawns within 60 meters of you between previously non-existent groups of bandits and loners, bullets are flying ad nauseum, they shoot into thin air because they don't, and can't, bother with tactics, you are hit by stray bullets from way past impenetrable brush, sending you into the red. Then, a herd of flesh suddenly intervenes in the fight, you are suddenly ravenously hungry and need to consume an inhuman amount of sausage and an energy drink to even stay upright, even though you scarfed down two cans of tushonka just three minutes ago. You try to run for cover, but in your attempt you slightly approach an inconspicuous rusty metal barrel that is half-way in the ground, turning your vision into a Siberian blizzard in 2 seconds flat, you hide behind a tree and bandage yourself up, use a med-kid and inject anti-rads. Now, all fully healed, you move back, carefully avoiding the sub-zero barrel, and fill the bandits with far too much lead you'd think they died of lead poisoning and not bullet damage. At last, when all is calm again, you find a total of 5 bullets, 10 bottles of beer and a med-kit, you shrug it off and loot the building you were originally meant to enter and find 4 vodkas and 2 bread, netting you absolutely no value after dispensing half of your ammo, all for nothing. You exit the building very disappointed, left with little to no immersion...
Then, as you walk 50 meter away from the battlefield, LONERS AND BANDITS START ANOTHER FIREFIGHT AND IS AGAIN THIRD-PARTIED BY ANOTHER HERD OF FLESH.

This ♥♥♥♥ gets ridiculous fast and its not even remotely rare. Its just not what I'm looking for in what is supposed to be a deeply stylized and immersive shooter/survival game. Not to mention the sheer shenanigans the game throws at you at about the half-way mark of the story. Shooting gallery galore with no real intrigue or "gameplay" other than "dump your magazines for the next hour" and bosses that make me question if they were designed half an hour before the final deadline.

There are also still so many odd and baffling choices that makes me want to literally cut my head off, including but not limited to, the sheer volume of visual noise from radiation, Skiff as a physically healthy 20-30-something man having the stamina of an 80-year old emphysema patient, Skiff's constant need to engorge himself on bread and canned food every other minute in order to not die of starvation like he is a minor deity of gluttony, no real difficulty curve other than being turned into a paper mâché figurine that dies from bumping his funny bone and the enemies turning into walking bullet sponges and AI having virtually no mechanics involving trading, factions, player stealth or any tactical sense what so ever.
These are only some of the complaints that I have with the core gameplay loop and can even be, somewhat, easily fixed with already existing mods.

Also, on top of all of this, they promised Multiplayer, and that fact fills me with dread in terms of the future of the game. Now, I have exactly zero interest in a Multiplayer function in Stalker 2. If you told me GAMMA was getting a multiplayer mode I would be stoked, but not here.
The game is still a mere shell of what it could, and honestly should, be and is barely dragging on performance- and stability-wise, and they are contractually and legally obligated to implement a multiplayer function, which I'm sure they will fnagle, lie and transform into a promise of a "Co-Op" or a rudimentary "Arena" or "Skirmish" mode. Either way, I don't care, their problems lie elsewhere in my opinion and they will be delayed further still because of this obligation, if addressed at all in the end.

To all of those in the crowd preaching something to the effect of "this is what Stalker 2 was meant to be from the beginning" , I say to you: I think you deserve better.
Obviously, I'm not blaming the average developer at GSG, I'm confident they did the best they could given the situation. But this just ain't it.
It looks like something akin to a Stalker game but it absolutely does not feel like a Stalker game.

Perhaps the DLC is more solid overall, but I'm starting to doubt if I will even try to get there given the gameplay I've seen so far. Maybe I'll come back when the mods are updated for 2.0 and the core game loop is not straight up painful.

The game is just not finished, it never was, and at this point, I don't think it ever will be.
GSG in their current predicament at this point in time does not seem to be equipped to create what I would consider a good Stalker game that can be considered on par with its predecessors. This makes me particularly sad considering what the original devs- and modders up to this day are able to do with the frankly technical horror-show that was the original trilogy and its engine.
Going forward, if I ever even get to complete the DLC, I think I might be finished with them as a Game Company and play the earlier games or GAMMA if I need a Stalker fix.

For everyone pointing out my play time, which is fair, all I can say is: Copium is a hell of a drug.
A chunk of that time is trying to piece together some mods, tweaking settings and giving the results a fair shake so that it could hopefully make the game enjoyable. Alas, it was still a frustrating experience to the bitter end.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tOverall, the game is good. The graphics are nice, there is a decent variety of weapons, although I really dislike the fact that damage seems to depend more on the weapon itself rather than the actual caliber.

The biggest problem, however, is the NPC AI. It is absolutely terrible. Probably the worst AI in the entire S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, and honestly one of the worst examples of NPC behavior I have seen in any game.

For example, you can see an entire squad of NPCs walking next to an electrical anomaly. They simply keep walking as if nothing is happening, completely ignoring it, until the anomaly reaches them and kills the entire squad.

There were also situations where I shot an NPC with an unsuppressed weapon, while his ally was standing literally two meters away. The first NPC dies from a loud gunshot, and the second one does not even turn around or react.

Sometimes you kill an NPC, another NPC sees the body, and just continues walking as if absolutely nothing happened.

They recently added fog and said that it would affect NPC visibility and make it harder for both the player and enemies to see and shoot through it. In reality, NPCs can still shoot at you from somewhere far away inside the fog while you cannot even see them.

Another thing that happens constantly is NPCs behaving completely irrationally during combat. You are fighting them, and suddenly they start walking sideways while looking in a completely different direction. Sometimes they even turn their backs to you and keep moving, allowing you to kill them without any resistance.

I have also seen friendly stalkers completely ignore mercenaries. The mercenaries were shooting at me, their bullets were hitting the friendly stalkers standing nearby, and they still did absolutely nothing.

At this point, the NPCs are probably the dumbest I have ever seen in the history of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The game has good graphics, atmosphere, and weapon variety, but the AI completely destroys the immersion. And what makes it even more disappointing is that these problems are still there even after the release of the new DLC.

The game has a lot of potential, but the NPC AI desperately needs a serious rework.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI genuinely don't see the appeal of this game because it doesn't feel or play like any of the other stalker games.

Just Play CoP or Clear Sky

Gameplay is terrible.
No matter how much armor or how good your equipment is you are still going to die and kill things more or less the exact same. Armor has a hidden cap so no matter what on the Stalker difficulty you are still going to die to things in about 4-8 hits with maxed out armor and artifacts so it forces you to play like a rat to get anything done. This was especially noticeable in a specific warehouse against a Burer where I would die in about 1-2 seconds with good armor and was repeatedly hit through walls which would take out 1/4th of my health instantly.

You are barely able to get anywhere because the move speed and stamina has been drastically reduced so exploring is tedious unless you pop constant energy drinks and food, and good lucky trying to get anywhere or do anything while over encumbered because your stamina borderline doesn't exist.

Artifacts are pretty terrible and poorly explained in game so there isn't really a point to get any that increase resistance (Because of the armor cap from earlier and armor being generally weak, they don't seem to do anything noticeable) Only ones worth using are ones that increase Endurance, weight and Radiation resistance (Radiation resistance in this game is weird, they offer some protection against radioactive artifacts (think of it as a threshold before taking radiation poisoning) but don't take away radiation you absorbed like CoP so no point in equipping anything over what zeros out your artifact's radiation [yes this means if you try and experiment with artifacts you are going to be popping radiation drugs and vodka constantly because you slightly irradiated yourself for a fraction of a second. so you don't loose a 1/6th of your health, it's as stupid and annoying as it sounds.])

Medkits and bandages now have a long animation and there is actually a good chance you will just bleed to death or get shot again before you ACTUALLY use them and you can't sprint while using them otherwise it cancels the animation.

I honest to god can't remember anything about the story because it was so bland besides it contradicts previous lore about artifacts because they no longer work outside of the zone (so why the ♥♥♥♥ is there a market for these paper weights, they sure as ♥♥♥♥ aren't useful in gameplay or lore now so who the hell is buying them?)

My pc specs are more than capable of running the game. I play an hour, crash. I played the day after this huge update, crash. Its literally crashing my pc and restarting it. I min/maxed my settings, and looked up community hotfixes, tried all of them, still crashing. The only thing left to try is going in and deleting lines of code from the games saved files and last time I checked I'm not a GSC employee or a game dev. so that is not a reasonable fix. I'm tired of paying money for incomplete, non functioning products/services. Please for the love of all that is holy fix the game breaking, unplayable, pc crashing bugs please, thanks.\t\t\t\t\t

After 19 years, we can finally come back and fully explore CNPP with the DLC. It's a must have. The areas are atmospheric as ever specially with the new OST. You will be able to explore both the surface and the underbelly of the power plant, going through it's nasty sludges and hibernating mutants that have been waiting since Shadow of Chernobyl.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tS.T.A.L.K.E.R. was always in my life, even back then when I was a little kid and I couldn't even speak English, my fascination with the series actually introduced me to literature as well,it probably even influenced my career when I think about it. I've bought the game when it was released but that wasn't exactly a best time,figured 2.0 was the right time to jump in, and oh boy I have been no lifing this game for a week or since,but as with many things in life it has thorns and hell I don't even write reviews but here we go; ((SPOILERS OF COURSE))

1-Game engine sucks ass,lightning sucks extra ass especially. Firefights indoors will suck, even with night visions and upgrades (gen 3 vs.) somewhat helps but still, When you are fighting indoors you will get shot at and see the enemies muzzle flash but chances are you are not seeing them until you get close to them, even with gen3 night visions fighting indoors sucked ass for me, this was somewhat the case in OG trilogy too but I feel like your flashlight back then lit up the whole room and X-ray even though all it's troubles wouldn't cause any issues with lightning,the whole game just felt dark to me no matter what settings and all the things I have tried. Don't even get me started on optimization but still not as bad as the release week.

2-Story kind of didn't make sense or wasn't as good as before, Clear Sky events got retcon'd (but why) and new details you learn during your time in the swamps will make you question where Clear Sky (the game and the faction,both) stands now, I love Skif as a protagonist because right now I am busting my ass trying to own a house and probably get a cat and I would ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ go to great lengths if it got destroyed too but that's kind of his only motivation compared to Strelok's goal or Major Degtyarev's reason for being in the zone. Also most of the characters are here now but I can't shake the feeling that they are only here because of fan-service and trying to get "OMG HE'S BACK" good boy points,because their actions/dialogue doesn't hold a candle to their old behaviour and overall attitude back in the og trilogy.

3-AI isn't great, they are just cheap in master difficulty. They hit hard but they just don't have any logic to them, think of it like veteran difficulty in Call of Duty series, you know the AI is bad they will not do advanced stuff like flanking,splitting etc. but they are aimbots and they will hit hard, that's what's going on here. Stealth is piss poor easy because the time it takes them to be alert is really high so you can sprint get into cover quickly and voila, also sometimes they forget that they were in a firefight and their buddy just got a clean 5.56 ap to the head so they just go into search mode until you start causing trouble again.

4-A-life is not there,I have not experienced many stalker squads or "living zone" no matter how many youtube videos or comments are out there,my zone has been empty except for a few rare times where there were bandits hanging around or ward squads (they were my enemies in my playthrough) but other than that I chugged energy drinks left and right and just sprint,some mutant encounters here and there but zone was peaceful for me,like a resort. Also some of these squads spawned directly in front of my eyes so there's that.

5-Some of the DLC quests were buggy for me such as Territorial War (where the big fights happen between freedom vs duty, I feel like they wanted a nostalgic warfare mod type of ♥♥♥♥ here) also boss mechanics in stalker games will always suck, it just doesn't fit, especially when Scar hits you across the walls in his boss fight lmao. Stamina bug frequently happened to me where I didn't generate any stamina whatsoever and my boy Skif was stuck in running mod,loading my save always fixed it,other than that things were stable.

6-I hate damage being based on the gun but not the caliber itself. Good old AK that is firing 5.45 will lose out to the another assault rifle that fires the same 5.45 but it will deal double damage. Why is this a thing even, let 5.45 deal similiar damage, make the late game assault rifle carry more attachments or offer more accuracy etc. I hate this type of ♥♥♥♥ in games,OG trilogy kinda (not really) suffered from this problem as well.

Review sounds negative but all said and done that's a whole week wasted away on gaming and stalker,that's an accomplishment on it's own and a big one for me because for the past 2 years I have been slaving my life away work+home+gym triple combination,it was a breath of fresh air but playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 felt like visiting my childhood neighbourhood,I can look at places and remember all the memories I have made, my friends, first girlfriend etc. but now all my friends are changed and the first girlfriend got married, this is the exact vibe I get, it feels familiar yet you are a stranger. Pain from an old wound,nostalgia.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI waited almost 2 years to properly experience S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. What can I say? After 2.0 update the game feels complete. In my 15 hours of gameplay, I saw maybe 1 or 2 bugs and they weren't game-breaking. The setting is absolutely gorgeous and it's one of the better looking games out there right now. I can't relate to negative reviews complaining about the game's performance. The game runs just fine for me, but I do have an absolute spaceship of a PC, so keep that in mind. The story is intriguing but it's the setting that steals the show for me. Exploring the Zone is an absolute delight. I can't wait to see where the game will take me next and I am already looking forward to diving into the DLC. Highly recommend this game in its current state to everyone!\t\t\t\t\t

They're things you see and interact with for much of the gameplay, so I'm glad they're easier on the eyes. Performance is also noticeably smoother, as in the past I believe I was stepping down to DLSS quality. I am now running the game smoothly using DLAA, which maintains a nice sharp image in such a foliage-dense environment. I haven't finished the base game yet as I was hoping to wait until the game is more polished, and I believe the time for a fresh start is now!\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tIt's quite hard to quantify how good or bad this game is, if you were like me and pre-bought this thang i would've said it was an okay purchase back then at best, it was such a problematic release than to any non-stalker fans i would've told you to stay away from it for at least a year.

2 years later and i'm glad to say to anyone interested in the game, go ahead and buy it, performance issues are for the most part solved (there are improvements to be made though), i won't talk much about story nor gameplay you can watch videos for that so TL;DR: It's okay for gameplay, story wise it's quite vast and lots of secrets to find out there. I've always played with the EN VA cause i found the bad english funny and enjoyable, sometimes the dialogue options that you get when you have to reply to a character while traversing through the campaign are (at least to me) not what i was expecting my character to say or not with the tone i was imagining when he was going with when replying but i digress.

I keep writing yet not finishing this review, i think it's a good buy if you're buying full price perhaps stay with the standard edition or wait for a discount and buy the deluxe you get the DLC for free and the future DLC for free as well iirc (besides that you get a couple of side missions that get you some DLC gear that is not that much better than regular guns so yeah)\t\t\t\t\t

1) Changing any graphics settings causes the game to then ignore your FPS limit meaning you then need to set it again. Really annoying, this was here at launch, crazy it hasn't been fixed.
2) The game constantly has a persistent display issue that I can only describe as a "brightening" of everything. It is like some sort of ambient occlusion issue. The only thing that sort of fix the issue is running at high FPS but then....
3) Crashes, might be instability due to my hardware but I don't have this issue with other games. Every time I'm finally starting to get absorbed BOOM crash.

Overall, 2.0 vs 1.9 is night and day difference! GSC have massively delivered and solved nearly all of my core issues.

- Bad antialiasing seems to have been fixed with better implementations of both TSR and FSR. The game is finally SHARP!!
- Lighting is completely different to the point that I think it was just broken before, I can't understate how good it is now in motion.
- Aiming/movement feels a lot smoother, even if I still have to disable mouse acceleration with an .ini tweak. Just in general all gameplay movement feels so smooth now!
- Foliage looks so much better and nearly all of the 'smudging' I described before is gone now.
- Major bugs (spawn issues + shooting through walls) have been fixed.
- Some big cutscenes are now skippable, most notably the intro!
- atmosphere went to over 9000 with the new visuals

Below was written for 1.9:

It took me a while to really get into it, as STALKER2 is in some ways a departure from what came before. Overall, it took some tweaking but it seems to capture the spirit of the originals in most ways. And as an open world shooter the core gameplay is pretty good.

But that does come with a caveat: the game didn't click for me until I switched to Veteran plus difficulty (Master and after the start you enable 'manual saves'). It seems to drastically reduce the bullet sponginess of enemies to a tolerable level. What were they thinking...

I also had to struggle with the UE5, being quite frankly a terrible engine for how it deals with anti-aliasing and general performance. If you've played Avowed or another UE5 game, you will know that by default the game has this very blurry appearance and quite severe ghosting. To me it felt like I had to squint all the time as if my glasses weren't working. It's a far cry from the sharpness of some of the shots presented in the loading screens.

The blurriness and ghosting are due to the terrible UE5 implementation of temporal antialiasing. Those who have tweaked it to reduce it, will have seen the reality: the game renders some cheap very noisy shadows and foliage and relies on the temporal blurring to smudge the noisiness into something coherent. So you can't really get the TAA out of there and have to live with some blurriness. I've managed to get it to a tolerable state by using FSR on native AA and later even beter with a heavily tweaked TSR (look up the steam guide for better TSR), and disabling the frame generation, locking to 60fps for stable frames (I don't get much more than 75 FPS, machine specs attached). Foliage still look like garbage but I hope the engine upgrade coming soon will help with that. I'm serious, run around a packet of dense foliage keeping your focus on the foliage and you'll see all the smearing as if it is a badly encoded video.

Another struggle for me is how the recoil and movement feels. It reminds me a bit of Oblivion back in the day, you could really feel that game struggling to deal with the time's hardware. It is kind of similar to the original STALKER: SoC experience. It all feels a bit floaty and chuggy, it's not as snappy as we're used to from the modern STALKER mods (Gunslinger, GAMMA, Radiophobia 3). It has become less of a problem with some tweaks, as the default seems to have a form of mouse acceleration and uneven horizontal/vertical sensitivity (seriously?!), but it is still far from perfect.

Then there is the persistent bugs, most notably the enemies ignoring cover some times to hit you with bullets or objects through walls, and the overpopulation that was promised fixed but still exists. Hopefully the engine update also includes these fixes, as promised.

There's also the problem of unskippable cutscenes... maybe later I'll have more to say about the story, but it does have a level of corridor shooter to it that's not what I wanted. Like the bad end parts of the first 2 STALKER games, we should have learned from that.

Still, after you get used to it the Veteran+ shooting feels quite good and it has grown on me, as has the excellent atmosphere that we've gotten used to from this series. There is artifact hunting as an important part of the economy, the loot seems scarce enough on Master and the economy fairly balanced (I'm not swimming in money). They've added some great exploration elements with hidden stashes, I keep finding new things on repeated plays even in the starter/tutorial area.

And I have to hand it to GSC. They did deliver patch after patch of serious improvements to the game. They are listening to the community given the priority on issues to fix so far. I would not recommend buying the game on the base prices, but a nice 25% off (40-45 dollars/euro range) seems quite fair.
