\n\t\t\t\t\tInitially I was going to give this game a thumbs up, but, having finished it, I just can't recommend it to anyone who values their time.

There are some things that I loved about this game, namely the setting and sound design. St. Amelia, the town itself, is arguably the best part of the game and it's one of the best settings I've seen in a horror game. The introduction to the town during the first couple of hours is phenomenal and makes you want to dig deeper into its mystery. It looks beautiful and it feels eerie. The sound design felt great as well. The ambient noise, the sounds every enemy makes, the music... It all added to the atmosphere and, frankly, it was exactly what kept me going...

... Because, unfortunately, almost every other aspect of Townfall falls flat. The story, while intriguing at first, turned out to be as shallow as a puddle. There was not a single "OH ♥♥♥♥" moment that made me question what was happening. Everything was predictable, no real twists or anything, just a surface-level mystery that doesn't go any deeper than what it initially presents you. During the last few parts of the game I kept re-reading every document and clue I'd found up to that point thinking I'd missed something, but the only thing I found was just disappointment. The tale the game tells is as old as (silent) hills and the same can be said about the characters. They're all pretty one-dimensional and there's little to no character development. The game tries to do a twisty twist with one of them, but, if you pay enough attention and if you have a functional braincell, you can see that twist coming from miles away. If I had to describe the story and characters of Townfall with only one word, it would have to be "generic" and they're generic in the worst possible way. It's something that we've seen or heard many times already and the game just doesn't even try to add its own unique spin to the story.

Then the gameplay... Stealth in Townfall is just as shallow as its story. The game doesn't really give you many tools or ways to approach the situations it throws you into. There are exactly 4 enemy types (and a stalker), two of which are barely present and appear only during specific sections of the game. Essentially, you spend 90% of the time with only 2 enemy types and, given how their AI works, once you get used to them every encounter turns into a chore. Combine that with how the endings work in this game, it becomes frustrating more than anything. And don't even get me started on the stalker enemy. Oh my lord. I can see how they tried to copy the way the xenomorph in Isolation works, but it was so badly implemented that, again, it just felt frustrating. Thankfully, it doesn't appear very often, but the sections of the game with the stalker are arguably the worst in the entire game.

Performance-wise, it was fine. There's some usual UE5 junk, like stuttering when you enter new areas, but beyond that it was pretty smooth. Not a single crash, no bugs.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t- I've now since finished a playthrough on normal with the "Abandoned" ending. Yeah a solid 8/10. It wants to say some things about justice that I'll digest on additional playthroughs.

I do recommend it. It's opening section, interestingly and pointedly enough titled "A cold open." Is a best in class introduction to a horror game. The sound design? Unreal. The art direction and Simon/Zoe's personal hells being aggressive shades of blue and red in the spirit of emergency services? Unreal. The narrative? Hooked from the jump. This is a great piece of horror media.

Konami. Come here. Come here for just a second because I just want to talk. Silent Hill isn't any more Outlast than F is Dark Souls. And you managed to make dumb gameplay decisions in both. Why the ♥♥♥♥, in my otherwise immaculate survival horror experience, does your monster get sped up revenge frames after single target board smacks? You can use sprint to get the momentum necessary to land a light attack and follow up because of the distance if you take a wide side, but that's just the thing: I'm having to game-ify the run which is taking me out of a world you want me so badly to be immersed in. I would like very much to be scared of your world. I'm rationing three bullets and over half a board trade to one mob because all combat in tight spaces is light-trade-light-trade-light or light-block-light-block-light. I could run and be rewarded for my map knowledge, but you made most enemies faster than the player.

So what does that do? Well, it creates a problem unique to purely stealth experiences.
Waiting. And waiting. And waiting. And waiting. Still waiting. Waiting. Still waiting. I'm wai- OH MY GOD.

I don't feel any sense of meaningful agency or reward for taking the time in my EA night to understand the meat and potatoes of the combat. Instead I see more of the same problems that F had in a different way. It's a game. I know you want to have this very specific experience but when the domestic deluxe edition is 8,500 yen, I don't want a 16-ish hour slow burn to become a 24 hour one because of waiting to do ♥♥♥♥.

This is definitely a solid 8/10 AAA game with so much shining around a tired combat experience and I absolutely mean to finish it for that reason.\t\t\t\t\t

The atmosphere is on the same level as the SH2 remake and the general feeling of the game is silent hill at its peak. The first person camera and CRT scanner are a welcome addition to the Silent Hill gameplay loop. I would absolutely recommend this game to any survival horror fan. \n\t\t\t\t\tBeside the usual UE5 BS, this game atmosphere and visuals are great minus the TSR blurriness and ghosting. the gameplay revolves heavily on stealth which Im not a big fan of. However, you get items to help with that and plenty of hiding spaces. The story is engaging so far and Im looking forward to see how it unfolds (stopped at PART3 as of writing).

\n\t\t\t\t\tSilent Hill: Townfall is ultimately a very uneven experience with extremely high production values that fails to justify its existence in this franchise, much like f before it. But unlike how f was still an enjoyable experience if divorced from its namesake, Townfall is a very troubling sign of Konami slipping back into the same mismanagement that put the series on ice for a decade.
(Some spoilers ahead, based on two full playthroughs with all documentation found).

The best things that can be said about Townfall are the visual presentation and the sound design. St. Amelia is drenched in the gloomy atmosphere that I personally recognise from seaside towns in Britain, with everything from the building shapes to the overall layouts and signage being extremely accurate. Though the external changes from the nightmare aren't super transformative, the interiors are saturated in a mixture of corrosion, brutalist architecture, and oil slick unlike anything that came before in the series in a unique way.

The sound to accompany these moments is equally as impressive, ranging from the subtle effects of billowing tarps in the winds, to industry at a large scale chugging away beneath your feet. The game's soundtrack, while not overtly memorable in terms of individual themes, does a great job of enhancing these visuals with warped synths and reverse effects of movement and voice that change as you near a danger lurking behind a corner. Even down to the way the audio from the CRTV is distorted from its small speaker is exceptionally well realised.

The other thing of note in the game are the puzzles, which thankfully do not follow the modern trend of insulting the player's intelligence. They're mostly well designed and executed as logic puzzles, even if a fair few of them basically boil down to following step by step instructions on what to do. Players with basic reading comprehension won't have an issue with any of them.

However, the same cannot be said for the monster designs. Whilst Silent Hill monsters are normally a highlight with their corruption of the human form into new and disturbing shapes, the same cannot be said for Townfall's roster. Not only is the variety extremely limited (there are only 4 types, minus the final boss), but they are all simply faceless humanoids with varying states of dress. They only really differ by how fast they move, and they feel exceptionally uninspired when compared with f's or even Silent Hill 2 Remake's monsters, yet alone the original games.

And it's unfortunately only the first in a series of aspects that get worse as Townfall's story unfolds. The moment to moment gameplay is deliberately slow paced, and this is enjoyable in the game's opening moments when you're trying to adjust to what is happening. But that pacing only ever gets slower to a frustrating degree by the way the game seems to discourage any sort of offensive play whatsoever to railroad the player's gameplay style.

Townfall wants you to stealth your way through the majority of the game's monsters, utilising the scanning mechanic on the CRTV to track their movements and hide when they get too close. It plays similar to games such as Alien: Isolation, albeit with clunk from how the CRTV only will track a single target at once. However, the enemies aren't very good at tracking you, and a single distraction with a brick or a radio will drive all of them in the nearby area away when you're outdoors. Indoors, it's very often a waiting game for the enemies to move to a spot where you won't be seen before you can try to lure them away, leading to long periods of just being stuck in place (there's even an achievement for it!).

At the same time, the game is exceptionally generous with giving you offensive resources. Frequent replacements for deteriorating weapons, tons of ammo and health drops, and by the later stages you're outright encouraged to kill everything that comes at you. The survival horror aspect of managing resources is rarely a challenge, even on the higher difficulties. Yet, the game actively punishes you with a worse ending to the story if you indulge in this clear incentive to go on the offensive, even when it's sometimes the best course of action. It's a very contradictory thing to experience, much in the same way the story is.

The story is simultaneously attempting to be overly obscure and mysterious, yet has all the visual subtlety of being hit with a sledgehammer. The player is given painfully obvious clues about why St. Amelia is the way it is, what the limited monster roster symbolises, all from blatant dumps of info from heavy handed CRTV sequences and monsters and environments bleeding oil. The actors do a good job with the material, and there is some slight misdirection in their dialogue to keep you interested, but the story eventually just devolves into the same thing that happened with f; everything we experience in the game isn't actually happening, it's all symbolic, none of the supposed supernatural elements exist. And the ultimate payoffs as to why this is taking place doesn't satisfy the initial mystery of the setup.

At the end of it all, just like with f, I'm once again left asking a single question; Why is this a Silent Hill game? Yet again, we are given a psychological horror story that borrows heavily from the series' signature visual style and presentation, but there is nothing about Townfall that even tries to connect it to the actual roots of why those elements exist; the town of Silent Hill itself. There is a fundamental misunderstanding from producer Okamoto and all of the newer developers and fans brought in through the series revival about how this franchise works.

You can't just have Silent Hill-esque things happen anywhere you want them, and you especially can't do it without some sort of connection to the original town. Regardless of whether you like the cultish or the personal nightmare angles, the town's innate properties are what lets this supernatural stuff happen. All of the series' most notorious visual language and signature scares are because of the town itself, even in the originals where parts take place outside its borders. Making a game called Silent Hill without a connection to that is like trying to make a game called Dark Souls as an FPS aboard a spaceship with laser cannons.

Townfall is the worst offender out of all the modern revival games for this. In all of the documents, in all of the various clues and pieces of extra information, there isn't even a tangential reference yet alone a direct link to the games' namesake. As a fan of the franchise from the very first entry in 1999, I am frankly sick of seeing the current Konami leadership use this incredible survival horror standard as a branding tool for totally unrelated games. It was already wearing thin with Ascension and f, but this takes the cake.

Townfall's premise and strong visual and audible identity is ultimately hampered by unsubtle storytelling, clumsy gameplay execution, and a total lack of connection to the series it's supposed to be a part of. Even its strongest aspects firing at full force can't excuse that this is one of the weakest entries by quite a margin and would've been better served as a much cheaper original IP, rather than riding on the coattails of something it so desperately wants to emulate.

No Cults. No Rituals. The Story is Incredibly Mid. The Gameplay is a Chore.

Simon was an engineer and because of a catastrophic accident is the only survivor of a disaster leading to the deaths of 100s. because of him being a sole survivor the massive corporation CEG wants to use him as a scapegoat to get out of responsibility for the Incident. Richard is the CEO of CEG and manipulates Simon into smoothing over the incident and Zoe a nurse tries to intubate Simon due to the critical condition the catastrophe left Simon in. this is a boring and trite commentary on corporate corruption. the twist isn't a twist but is the butt end of a joke. is it a dream? no. is it a coma?... LOL
the imagery of the monsters is heavily on the nose. the story beats are on the nose. in fact even Simon as a character is on the nose especially when we see him chide Richard at the end of the game. its all so trite and boring.
there is no strange spiritual power to the town, its all secular and explained by the physical realm. all the themes of this game go directly against the identity of silent hill as a IP and in fact id say silent hill f and Townfall are selfish vanity projects by people who wished to squeeze the last bit of life out of this IP to tell Their story and not a Silent Hill Story. i have many more critiques but the biggest problem isn't even the story its the gameplay.

in the regular sections your able to run hide fight and even shoot. that's all well and good but there are only 3 monsters. you say silent hill 2 only had 3 monsters too right? (basic enemies) well that was fine because silent hill 2 was a 5 hour game 7 hours if you take your time. this is a 15 hour game if you take your time and the meaning and personal trauma of the monsters is just so basic and yawn inducing. that's fine you can blastem right? well the shooting feels bad the gun sounds suck and shooting the same monsters over and over again is just plain grating. but that's not even the worst part the worst part is that you later get chased by a walking BALLSACK that is UNKILLABLE and KNOWS where you are at ALL times. He is on a Timer and Trigger Activation. whenever your not in a closet or you do a major Objective he RUBBERBANDS to YOU. the STEALTH is TRASH. the level design of the stealth sections will give you PTSD and the frustration of sitting in a closet for 10 minutes at a time becomes the motivation to just delete the game. if i knew the story was so bare bones and Generic i wouldn't have even played past the first BALLSACK section.

well yes there is actually surprisingly enough.
when your not being chased by a BALLSACK and actually exploring its quite enjoyable. but with the backdrop of it being a silent hill game ALWAYS lingering as a long time fan i just get so frustrated this game has literally no connection or purpose being called a silent hill game this in of itself leads to everything in this game being drained of meaning purpose or the desire to continue.

that aside exploring the houses stores and streets is actually quite enjoyable especially when in the shopping plaza with a stand out puzzle involving cassette tapes being a major highlight. but as soon as you really start enjoying yourself your forced to play as ANOTHER character or get launched into the linear BALLSACK sections, its truly MADDENING.
there's 2 character switches which just feel completely pointless and only lead to your immersion breaking and disconjoining the progression as Simon with collecting and hoarding items.
as a whole i think this game is mid to begin with but the FACT its called silent hill FORCES me to compare it to its other titles specifically the beloved classics. as someone who literally just replayed the original 4 a month ago i can say with crystal clarity this game doesn't even come close to those games both narratively and mechanically. the puzzles are largely bad serving next to no narrative purpose especially towards the end with only 2 or 3 actually being good out of a small batch to begin with i just cant in good conscious give this game a good review and with the added context of it being forced to wear the skin of this IP i have to be EVEN HARSHER, it is as a SILENT HILL game A BAD silent hill game.

\n\t\t\t\t\tWriting this review just to give some context to all the negative reviews claiming "constant stutters" and "repeating crashes". As someone with a pretty Mid-Tier computer (5 year old graphics card by this point), with up-to-date graphics drivers, this game runs fine. The "constant stutters" are once every 5-10 minutes, usually when crossing a load zone, and don't affect gameplay in the slightest. I have had 0 crashing, and have had consistent 60fps with ultra graphics and raytracing on @ 1080p, and this game doesn't even feature framegen (which I appreciate).

Past that, I'm not that far into the game but so far the visuals are amazing, the mood is dark and oppressive, the tv mechanic is fresh and interesting, and the story is pretty solid.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI originally bought this game to support the revival of the series and to see the SH1 remake through, since it’s my favourite Silent Hill game.

After the disappointment of F, I had pretty much lost hope of playing a decent Silent Hill that isn’t made by Team Silent. Townfall while does have its issues, is by far the best non remake Silent Hill we’ve had since SH4.

The atmosphere is easily its strongest trait. I love being lost in the fog, taking in the scenery and just seeing where the game takes you. Most of the puzzles are awesome, and the story is great too. It’s very straightforward tho, which might upset some people considering we’re used to Silent Hill’s stories shining through their subtext and deeper interpretations.

Akira Yamaoka not composing the OSTs had me worried but the moment I heard the start menu theme I realised we were in good hands thanks to Anthony Scott. The soundtrack fits the game well and manages to capture that eerie Silent Hill feeling without simply trying to imitate Yamaoka.

Best of all, unlike the last two modern instalments, Townfall isn’t long for the sake of being long. It’s fairly replayable, doesn’t overstay its welcome, and actually feels like a game I’ll want to go through again. Also, with the biggest revolution in horror games: you can lock doors.

What takes it down a notch for me: optimisation is just sad, the game feels very unpolished and clunky, combat is disappointing, I’m having fun whenever I’m not engaging with enemies. The gameplay loop is uneven, The stealth is awful, the game takes things from silent hill 2 which is bad because that’s what originally destroyed the series, stuck trying to make another sh2, the characters are unmemorable and some of the puzzles are very cryptic.

I’m personally not a fan of the new direction the producer is taking the franchise in by moving it outside of the town, especially when Team Silent established the importance of Silent Hill itself, with the phenomena being unique to the town unless you’re connected to the Order like Walter and Cheryl, it’s probably time to embrace this new direction sadly.

Overall, Townfall has its problems but it’s the first non remake SH that actually gave me hope for the series again.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThere are several things this game gets right, I want to like it; the environments, puzzles and story are great. However, Townfall's gameplay is mostly just frustrating. I know some people really like games like Amnesia and Outlast, so I don't mean to offend, but I very much am not having a fun time with the stealth and combat here. Combat is extremely discouraged because melee almost guarantees taking damage and using the gun will attract enemies. I don't get the rewarding feeling I get in SH2R or RE2R where if I play well I can take no damage. The optimal way to play is to sit around and wait for the enemies' long marching routines and then crawling through, which for me frankly has just been frustrating and boring. The stalker enemy is terrible. I played all the way through Alien Isolation despite this kind of horror not being my cup of tea and even the Xenomorph was not as stuck to you as this annoying ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I like that they are letting different devs try new things with the series, but as someone who absolutely hated Outlast this is super disappointing.\t\t\t\t\t

I don't like to be overly critical of games tbh but the heavy reliance on stealth in this game is a massive time waster and a big disappointment. \n\t\t\t\t\tPainfully mid. Possibly the most disappointing release this year. The only positive things I can say about this game is the puzzles are not bad and the sound design has been cool so far. Many elements of this game lack polish, whether it be the stealth, the combat, the optimization, or the UI.

This game wants to be super immersive but is slapped together in UE5 so you will have stutters every time the game noticeably loads something or if you step into an "open" area that pulls your attention right out of the game. This seems to be true for many no matter what hardware or settings configured. I have tried pretty much every combination of settings and still experience stutters.

It may be thematically fitting for a silent hill title to be having an identity crisis, but this game does not know if it wants to be Outlast, Alien Isolation, or The Last of Us (specifically the sections with clickers, not the fun parts you might be thinking of when I say TLOU). At the same time, the story feels extremely derivative of SH2 but I find myself not caring about these characters or the situation they are in at all, while SH2 is able to completely hold my attention for its entire runtime. The hard pill to swallow is that while I am reminded by all the previously mentioned games while playing, I would rather be playing them instead of this. Especially during the moments where you are waiting for spooky enemy #3 to walk the other way so you can get to where you want to go. There is nothing interesting about the stealth in this game, and it is unfortunately the majority of the gameplay.

I may update this review after finishing but I am not loving this game so far at all, and only want to inform potential buyers who may be on the fence about buying this, or any of the other big releases happening soon.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI genuinely wanted to hit that thumbs-up button. There is a lot to enjoy here, and during my initial run, I had a solid amount of fun. But wrapping up my second playthrough made the fundamental flaws impossible to ignore: this is a perfectly decent, atmospheric survival horror game, but an utterly lackluster Silent Hill title.

At times, it feels less like a true entry in the franchise and more like a competent generic horror game that had the Silent Hill name slapped across the box to guarantee sales. The psychological weight and unsettling subtlety the series is known for just aren't there in the moment-to-moment gameplay. A big part of that comes down to the enemy encounters—the roster feels painfully limited and repetitive. What starts out as creepy quickly becomes tedious chore work, turning encounters into routine combat checks rather than tense, dread-inducing moments.

To give credit where it's due, the narrative foundation holds up well. The story beats land nicely, the atmosphere carries weight in key story sequences,

If Steam offered a "neutral" or "mixed" rating, that’s where this would land without hesitation. But trapped in a binary choice, I can't recommend it as a definitive Silent Hill experience only as a passable horror title you pick up on a steep sale.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tSo far this game is pretty good! I did experience 2 crashes while playing it, nothing too concerning, just my pc being meh. If i did had to nitpick about this game is that the enemies do so much damage that literally in 3 hits you just die, but thats probably just a skill issue on my end lol But overall im loving the environment, the mystery-like story and the first person point of view seems fine in my opinion. For now I give it like a 8/10 so far, i will keep playing it for sure.\t\t\t\t\t
