But I'm just gonna leave one here just to add another number to the counter to praise the glory of Pocketpair and implore you to give it a try. If anything, to give GameFreak and Nintendo the finger.
Growing up with Pokemon as a kid. Running home right after school every day in hopes to catch the last 15 minutes of the show. Linking up our gameboys to trade Pokemon during lunch and recess. Those memories are forever ingrained in me. As I grew up, I've always hoped Pokemon would grow up with me, but Nintendo and GameFreak had other ideas. They still think we're no better than the kids they market their games to. But I'm sorry. Enough is enough. How lazy can you be when a $7M game made by a small studio surpassed everything you've ever done in the last 30 years? What is your fkn excuse? Is Palworld perfect? Hell no. There's still some glitches here and there. Things can act whonky sometimes. But PocketPair had a vision and chased it. Nintendo and GameFreak lost that decades ago. Their only vision now is just greed, and they'll treat you like you're that innocent, naive child back in 1996.
So all that Nintendo/GameFreak bashing makes this game great? No. But at this point, we KNOW this game is great. $30 is already a steal for what you are getting. $20 just makes it a no brainer. Support PocketPair. They listened to us. They stuck to their guns to shame the ♥♥♥♥ out of Nintendo. Now the flood gates of other creature capture games are in the line up, and it's all thanks to this one quirky game where you can capture a fkn rocket dragon and shoot an arsenal of guns on the back of to fight a god whale. Review: Lets be honest, The game is fun. Its evolved (no pun intended) far beyond the "Pokemon with guns" game. It has its on identity, its own mechanics, its on story. The gameplay is smooth and enjoyable. The Pals (most of them) look cool and fun to use. the map is massive and creative. Everything about this game is grand. Almost.
My biggest gripe about this game is the human characters. Most of them still don't have much of a personality after this 1.0 update. Aside from how much marketing Zoe gets, I couldn't tell ya what separates any of the clans, factions, or main characters. The story is a bit mid, but still has enough lore and meat to be engaging. So why are the NPC's so boring?
Character models look good, pals have real personality and don't just walk back and forth in a line, the creative freedom I have to more or less explore the story and land as I please is great, and the fact that this game runs well on the a handheld PC as well as on a full system is *chefs kiss*.

I have nothing but praise for it. From the ease of play, the freedom of open world, no restrictions on travel except your own limitations, to the brilliant design of the pals themselves. It was hard to shelve this game for a bit ... and I refuse to uninstall it as I know I'll come back to it again and again. I loved every second of it. The battling mechanics, the exploring ... to building a cozy base. I've not invested so much time into a game since Sims 4 (which at 4k hours plus will be hard to beat) But, never say never. There's a LOT here that I enjoyed. The exploration was great, there's a wide variety of critters to catch, plenty of craftables to make, and the breeding mechanics can get crazy in-depth if you want to dig into them. In all honesty, I enjoyed this way more than I have the last few mainline Pokemon games I played. Will I 100% it? Probably not, but that's more just not wanting to bother tracking down all of the stat boosting relics than anything else.
There's a bit of jank to the combat in that certain beam type moves seem to melt anything regardless of typing, and the grind for resources can be pretty rough, but it's nothing insurmountable. It's clearly designed for multiplayer servers ala ARK, too. There's pretty obvious clearings for base building dotted around the map, and it feels a bit lonesome with no other activity in them.

Ive just been playing regular pokemon watching turn based combat play out because Im using way worse gear than the game expects me to have even after many hours of grinding and trying to optimize my base
The pals and fights and guns are all really cool which is why I have so many hours but Im missing out on a large chunk of the fun which is fighting with the pals and using cool weapons

this game expects you to know what to do at every part, how to optimize pals to get work done efficiently, and which resources you should farm at any given point. i've played this game once or twice throughout early access and knowing how work suitabilities/work speeds help things along made my playthrough much better. i have fun making pals that are SUPER good at specific tasks around the base! but once you get in the endgame, you will REGRET never having set up ranches for every type of material ever. constantly running out of materials and either needing to fly around and kill things for 1-3 drops or wait for minutes for some.
things i do like:
- manufacturing souped up pals to speed up work flow
- the skills system
- the passive/pal ability system
- base management
- some boss fights are actually fun/interesting
- rewards for catching the same pal up to 5 times
- the pal effigy system
things i do NOT like:
- pals will put things in the first chest they find, regardless of if they are already in a chest
- there's no custom priority system for which tasks pals do first
- has next to no automation capability. all crafting MUST be started by the player
- multiplayer isn't that fun since XP and technology unlocks are not shared, so if one player gets ahead, its impossible to catch up reasonably
- chest storage progression sucks, and should hold more per tier
- upgrading facilities/chests makes them take WAY more size each time, often requiring you to move everything around to accommodate ONE new building
- overworld exploration/progression is almost... TOO open. i can just go to an endgame area and collect spheres that let me catch anything. there's no incentive to explore areas in my level when i could just go to a higher level area for way better stuff
- resources required in the endgame is far too grind-y. repeated raid boss fights/long expeditions to get AI Cores

For a game built around collecting Pals, building bases, and investing hours into progression, automatically wiping that progress simply because a guild has been inactive makes no sense.
People have jobs, travel, emergencies, and lives outside the game. Taking a short break should not put hours of progress at risk.

Survival. Conan gives you thirst, hunger, heat, cold and corruption. The desert is trying to kill you before anything holding a sword gets its turn. Palworld gives you a mild sense of peckishness and weather that a coat solves. Eat a berry. One of these is a survival game; the other keeps a food bar out of politeness.
Labour. Conan: you club a man unconscious, tie a rope to him, drag him across the desert to a machine called the Wheel of Pain, and starve him until he agrees to run your forge. Palworld: you throw a ball at something and it smiles while it runs your forge. Identical system. Only one of them tells you what it is.
Breeding. Conan asks you to camp a spawn point for hours until a named blacksmith shows up. Palworld asks you to run a stud farm with inheritance charts and trait rerolls. Neither is a hobby you should describe out loud at work.
Hauling. Palworld gives you a creature whose entire purpose is carrying ore from the rock to the box while you do something else. Conan's most advanced logistics technology is your own back.
Automation. Palworld's base is an idle game wearing survival clothes, and it works, because idle games understood what an evening is worth long before survival games did. Conan has no automation whatsoever, and treats this as a personality trait.
Building. Conan has snap points, stability rules, material tiers and a decay timer that deletes your house if you take a holiday. Palworld snaps, stays, and never punishes you for having a life outside it. Conan's system is deeper and it is also the reason your clanmate quit.
Death. Conan drops everything you own exactly where you died, which is always at the bottom of a slope with a crocodile on it. Palworld takes a little and shrugs.
Other people. Conan's social contract is that someone will eventually blow up your house while you sleep, and there is a scheduled window for it. Palworld's is that your friend logged in and rearranged the chests. One of these produces stories. The other produces evenings.
Traversal. Palworld folded movement into the capture system, so your mount, your glider and your artillery are all the same animal. It's the single most elegant idea either game has had, and Conan answered it with horses.
Combat. Conan is heavy, stamina-bound, occasionally magnificent and frequently a man falling through the floor. Palworld is a perfectly competent third-person shooter that happens to have a monster on your shoulder holding a rifle.
Endgame. Conan's is an avatar of a god the size of a keep stamping on somebody's fort at a scheduled hour, plus whatever the neighbours are quietly building. Palworld's is a tower with a boss in it, a health bar and a timer, and then the next tower. One is an event that happens to a community. The other is something you beat on a Tuesday and never think about again.
Setting. Conan has Robert E. Howard's world, and the weight comes through even the jank. Palworld is pleasant, tidy and gone from your head by morning. Cozy is not a setting, it's a temperature.
Money. Conan runs a Bazaar and a battle pass, and then hands you an entire engine upgrade for nothing. Palworld shipped years of free updates from a studio that spent the same years being sued over throwing a ball at an animal. Nintendo's claim, the one that frightened an industry, comes to roughly the price of a used hatchback.
Two notes for Funcom that nobody asked for.
Sorcery should never have been handed to the player. In Howard, magic is what the villain has and the hero doesn't: foreign, decadent, and always paid for by someone else. Turning it into a skill tree flattens the one thing that separated this world from every other fantasy setting on the shelf. Keep sorcery, make it terrifying, and keep it on the far side of the sword.
And the followers. One thrall at your heel isn't a warband, it's a man with a job. Let the posse grow, and then let the settlement behave like one: people who move, eat, argue, and have somewhere to be at dusk. Palworld's camp is dumber than Conan's in every respect except this one, and it's the respect that counts, because the pals look like they live there and your thralls look like furniture with health bars.
The future, which is the actual point. Palworld won the convenience argument so completely that Conan can't compete there and shouldn't try. What's left to Funcom is everything Palworld declined to take: the cruelty, the weight, the world with an author's name on it. Conan Enhanced answered with Unreal 5, both maps on one character, and mods on day one, which is the right instinct aimed at the wrong organ. Prettier is not the differentiator. Harsher is. Meanwhile Palworld shipped 1.0 with a rewritten story, and it's still watery. That's the joke: the cozy one is annexing ground Conan never bothered to defend, and doing it badly, while Conan says more with nobody talking at all. Sun directly overhead, music rising over an empty horizon, your only weapon snapping two swings into a fight you picked. Nothing is narrated. Everything is told.
Two thumbs up, and not polite ones. Pocketpair built the most generous version of this genre anyone has managed, and did it while being sued over the shape of a ball. Funcom kept an eight-year-old game standing and then rebuilt it in a newer engine rather than selling it back to you twice.

A lot of option to choose from, whether its exploration, making strong pals, buildings or make yourself a god fighter. Explorations and pals can be very straight forward once you know what to do/where to path, can even cheese a lot of the progression. For me the building part is where the most fun is, different playthrough, different builds/style.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
