Look, I've played video games since I was a kid in the 90s. I've played a lot of them. Cairn is one of a handful that I've played in like 30 years that managed to touch me at a very deep level. It's beautiful and unique. It's so calm and relaxing, while being one of the toughest experience I've had.
Kami is a challenge. The game FEELS physical and exhausting. While you climb you can FEEL the intensity of the effort, the pain. The rewarding feeling of making it to the next edge and be able to put up your bivouac is real then.
Every step of the way feels like a battle and the mountain is watching you struggle.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tCairn chooses to make its rock climbing mechanics very realistic, not because "realism=good", but because the devs likely have experience in rock climbing, and want to convey the intense problem-solving thrill of properly supporting yourself up a seemingly impossible wall. When getting used to the game, it can be surprising to realize you're not being pushed a detailed HUD showing a "grip gauge", "weight by limb", or dreaded "yellow paint", etc. It's just your character, Aava, and a wall, leaving you to intuit the best way to position yourself. The devs pick a great shading method that can help to highlight even sliver-thin usable holds all around you. That sense of isolation is both great to build immersion, as well as a bit signature to the character development of the game.
Much like The Game Baker's last game, Furi, Cairn builds a thematic story specifically off of the game's difficulty - of what goes on in the head of someone tackling the world's most dangerous mountain, Kami. Aava is clearly somewhat antisocial, and climbing is in many ways something she does to isolate herself from the world. There's some great scenes that build off of that theme, and some very good writing and voice acting on offer.
Part of your exploration will find you exploring the remains of a civilization of people that spent their whole lives on the mountain, as well as other secrets many players can miss if you don't explore thoroughly. The game has a lot of resource management too, and choosing to go off the beaten path can offer a lot of rewards to restore vitals or even boost you on the next climb.
The game has some excellent highs, though to be fair to it, I should also point out a few lows. Climbing in Cairn is mostly very intuitive - you might have two close holds, but then find Aava will start panicking and losing grip, and frustratedly wonder why. If you ever try these positions yourself in real life, you may find closely conjoined holds sometimes force too much upward strength on your own arms, preventing you from using friction to keep yourself up.
However, other times very little seems to make sense. Aava will, at times, loosely let go of her one good foothold, lose grip while standing straight up on a wide flat ledge, or falter on manmade ledges that locals used to climb every day. I generally have to offer forgiveness to these issues because making an accurate and emotionally-built game off of the free-ragdoll basis of what used to form meme games like "QWOP" was definitely no easy task, and more often than not Cairn actually nails the feeling of rock climbing.
The one other bit I felt very grumbly about was icepick climbing, as you approach the summit. The game gives only a tiny tutorial for this, as well as a new control (that does not appear in options, and glitched out several times to me, "disappearing" Aava's ice axe), then forces you to understand the intricacies of stamina in that alternate form of climbing, leading to many occasions of two picks/two boots deeply embedded in ice, and still falling flat off the wall.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\ti absolutely adore this game, it's definitely an acquired taste because i can see people not liking it just for the format of having to control each limb to climb up, but i found it super fun and intuitive. i went in with just the expectation of experiencing a good climbing game and i did get that, but i also got to experience a great, moving story with aava as its central focus. she's a very, very complex character and i genuinely think she elevates the story and game. in my opinion, it wouldn't have been as memorable without her being somewhat unlikable, it's what makes her incredibly human. marco is also a solid side character and opposite to aava. i think he contributes immensely to what would've otherwise been a very lonely story.

i truly hope we'll get more mountains from this game in the future. we'll be getting a free dlc (on the trail) and i was lowkey pissed that i couldn't support the developers further LOOOL, but i'm super excited for what they'll release. i did buy the deluxe upgrade immediately after completing the game since the story stuck with me that much.

i truly hope we'll get more mountains from this game in the future. we'll be getting a free dlc (on the trail) and i was lowkey pissed that i couldn't support the developers further LOOOL, but i'm super excited for what they'll release. i did buy the deluxe upgrade immediately after completing the game since the story stuck with me that much.

Cairn is an incredible game. Despite its visual simplicity and relatively small number of mechanics, it has everything it needs to make your adventure feel complete, emotional, and rewarding (and it might even make you think). I played through it with a friend, so the experience didn't fully explore the theme of loneliness, though that isn't really my thing anyway. Instead, I got something quite unexpected: a mix of jokes and funny moments from climbing together, and sudden shifts in tone whenever another message from Naomi came in. But let's take it from the top.
Let's start with the easy one. The soundtrack is gorgeous and captures the emotions of both the protagonist and the player at any given moment. If you've played Death Stranding, the atmosphere and the way the music is delivered will feel very familiar. In some places (the ending for example) the tracks fit the scene so well that my emotions were swinging like a spectrogram. You can tell the devs and composer really feels this project and knows how to steer the player's emotions through audio.
This one's pretty simple. The visuals are stylized, which will let the game keep its charm a year or two from now. Maybe even longer. In projects like this polygon counts, realistic environments and the number of wrinkles on the protagonist's face really don't matter. The graphics may be technically simple but with excellent art direction they take your breath away with the beauty of Mount Kami and everything around it. Like us you'll probably stop at every camp just to soak in the view and marvel at how far you've come, while dreading how much more crawling is still ahead.
That said, don't expect just any old hardware to handle it. The lighting, weather effects and physics will make a weak PC sweat. Still, it's nowhere near the level of UE5 slop.
Here we get into more complex territory. At first glance it seems simple: you control Aava's limbs while climbing, loot, sort your backpack, cook and rest. But all these mechanics work great together and they're backed up by smaller systems that do a wonderful job of pulling you into the world.
While climbing you may need a piton to secure yourself and keep from falling into the abyss. That doesn't mean a fall won't hurt though. Momentum will make you kiss the rock face and that kiss can be deadly... or not. Losing health doesn't automatically mean death. There's an element of randomness. The character can lose consciousness or die if the health bar hits zero. Pitons can break if they're placed badly, driven into rougher rock or simply worn out. Aava's fingers also get damaged from long climbs and awkward positions, so always keep an eye on their condition and make sure you have enough tape to wrap them.
But that's not all. The food, water and cold meters affect Aava's stamina and the cooking system has plenty of recipes, which makes experimenting with dishes a lot of fun. Early on my friend and I sat in the tent just combining random ingredients and celebrating the results like kids. Don't worry about wasting food. It's nearly impossible to ruin anything and a bit of ingenuity will reward you with a couple of achievements. Speaking of small touches that add variety, near the end Aava gets new gear that changes the gameplay slightly.
The downsides: I didn't run into any bugs but I do want to mention the sometimes annoying behavior of the protagonist while climbing. I'm not a climber and maybe I don't understand all the nuances of balancing the body, but at times it felt like the same rules didn't apply everywhere. Early on it's enough for your hands and feet to be in cracks or hooked onto something, but later that may stop working. Aava can shake in a given position yet after pressing the "rest" button she settles into that exact pose and suddenly everything is fine. In some spots it's enough for her to brace her knees or feet against the side ridges of the rock and inch upward, while in others that same position is unstable. This inconsistency was often very frustrating but it never killed my desire to keep playing. I do apologize to the developers though. In moments of stress Aava received some not-so-nice nicknames from me.
Level design deserves a special mention. In a game where all you do is climb a mountain I didn't expect to find so many secrets, passages and places to explore. Kami is dotted with interesting caves and ruins that you really should explore. They hold tools for a more comfortable climb, quest items (yes, there are mini quests) and plenty of nice trinkets to hang on your backpack.

And now to the story. It's a simple yet complex tale about the tragedy of climbers and of stubborn, determined people in general. The game starts off casual and positive. We're a famous climber heading up the highest unconquered mountain. What's not to like about an adventure like that? Beautiful scenery, friendly NPCs, goats, flowers, loot. But the higher you climb the more the mood shifts. At first the mountain itself hints at its danger by leaving broken Climbots, vending machines and funiculars along the way. For the player though these are just loot spots, and under the sunshine and green grass you keep climbing. Then we learn the history of the people who once lived on Kami and were forced to descend to civilization. Shattered lives. Even deaths. The higher Aava climbs the gloomier the surroundings become. This conveys both the emotional state of the character and the growing danger of Kami, as if the mountain were telling us that from here on only death awaits.
The game also has a great character named Marco. He's the complete opposite of our hero and a perfect NPC for a clash of two opposing ideas: climbing for the result versus climbing for the feeling and the journey itself. Our hero stubbornly wants to prove something to herself at the cost of her life (since she can't do anything but climb and struggles to live in the real world). Marco is shown as someone who simply enjoys the process. Sure, he's not as skilled and he gives up sooner, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that this year he made it further than last year and he enjoyed himself along the way. Over the course of the game Aava goes through a serious emotional and personal crisis. She asks herself questions she'd been running from and was afraid to answer, and her life falls apart with every meter she climbs. In the final moment the game puts the question to you bluntly: A chance at a long, happy life, or sacrificing everything for the summit?
As I said, Cairn really impressed me. What surprised me most was that even my friend, who isn't the most empathetic guy, came away deeply moved. The ability to make a game that's simple in gameplay yet emotionally and narratively complex fills me with nothing but admiration. I'm eagerly waiting for DLC and new projects from The Game Bakers. They've done a tremendous job. Maybe it's not a worldwide hit and sure, it has its rough edges, but once you've made your way up Kami none of that matters. For me it's definitely a very personal game and easily one of the best 15-20 hour experiences out there. I'm sure a few more climbs and falls are still waiting for me. I know that doesn’t sound like a chill, relaxing game, but I definitely wasn’t expecting how stressful the whole thing would be. Seriously, Cairn had me scooting toward the edge of my seat and clenching my cheeks almost every time I booted the game up. Shame on me for completely missing the mark, but credit to The Game Bakers for making me really enjoy a game that I didn’t quite fully grasp going into it, especially considering I couldn’t be farther from a rock climber in real life. I’ve never even done one of those indoor rock-climbing walls kids can do, let alone felt the desire to try to best a whole mountain. That would be the easiest way for me to become a tragic statistic.
To start with something I don’t like much about Cairn, I’m not the biggest fan of the game’s protagonist, Aava. She sets out to climb Mount Kami, which is basically acknowledged as a suicide mission since everyone who tried to reach the summit ends up as a messy pile of bones somewhere on the mountain. I’m fine with this as a concept, and real life isn't short on people with complex feelings and motivations for doing things like climbing a large rock at the risk of their own life. The whole idea of climbing Mount Everest is basically a test of humanity's hubris. My issue with it is that the game handles it in a weird way.
Aava constantly gets messages from people she knows and who care about her and her well-being throughout the game, including her girlfriend who’s also taking care of their sick cat. Her reaction to these messages is basically to roll her eyes and act aloof, which is such a wild bit of characterization for me, and not in a good or compelling way. I understand her personality and motives are supposed to be questionable, which is part of the reason she’s climbing the suicide mountain in the first place, but it feels like there’s a bit of a disconnect somewhere along the way here. I feel like either the messages Aava receives from her loved ones should be more grounding for her, or she shouldn’t really be getting them in the first place. As it stands, those messages just emphasize how seemingly out of touch Aava behaves.
While I don’t like Aava as a character much, I still appreciate how her abrasive attitude fits the game’s themes of isolation and trying to surmount an impossible challenge by yourself, even if it isn't completely logical. What she loses in being a likable character, she kind of makes up for by tying in nicely with what the game is setting out to do. I think it could be better overall, but when I finished Cairn and got what I consider the “true” ending, I felt like Aava’s character was wrapped up well, even if I didn't vibe with her as much as I had hoped going in. A “true” ending that fits a character well, even if that character has questionable motives and personality traits, is rare. Just remember Frey in Forspoken, and then accept my apology for making you remember Forspoken.
What really makes Cairn so interesting is its rock-solid gameplay, pun intended. Climbing Mount Kami is broken into major sections, and each part looks like it will be easy enough to traverse, but I found myself having to carefully plan each move and how best to use my items. Obviously, planning a route and what you need to do when climbing a mountain makes perfect sense, but for Cairn, it almost turns it into a kind of timed puzzle game that tests the player’s quick thinking and how well they can make snap decisions when faced with the possibility of Aava becoming paste on some jagged rocks below.
I was absorbed by the whole thing, and for the most part, the game’s mechanic of automatically choosing which limb Aava should move worked as intended. Generally, it behaved well enough to move the hand or foot I wanted Aava to move, though that made it infinitely more frustrating when it did mess up. In those cases, I would have to frantically mash the button to try and get Aava to move the limb I wanted her to move, and the one that would have been the optimal one to move in the first place. It didn’t happen often, but it happened enough to break immersion and frustrate me by making me lose progress because Aava refused to move her foot off a smooth surface into a perfect little crevice just a few inches away.
But when the gameplay did work, it really worked, and everything clicked into place nicely. Climbing slowly up, gradually watching the world unfold beneath you during your ascent, and seeing the game put Aava’s hands and feet in the best spots to assist your climb is genuinely fun, even if it doesn’t seem like it might be the most riveting gameplay loop in the world. I’ve heard people say this is one of the most realistic rock climbing games out there, and while I can’t attest to that without doing rock climbing myself, it feels pretty grounded. The only exception to that is how Aava’s limbs can clip through her body and rotate at angles that lead me to believe she’s secretly some spaghetti-human hybrid, but it’s all done for the sake of making the game work, so I’m fine with it in that regard. I would rather a game look a little funky sometimes than completely crumble on the technical side of things.
Another thing Cairn does really well is its background storytelling, bolstered by interesting, mysterious areas left behind by the mountain’s former inhabitants. It isn’t in the player’s face with a bunch of exposition and dialogue, which helps keep the focus primarily on Aava’s character while letting the player think about the background stuff. It’s just such a shame, because I feel like Aava wasn’t the best use of that focus. Stronger character work for her would have done a lot to help lift the game’s narrative choices as a whole, and I left feeling like Aava was the weakest part of what the game had going on, which is a shame since it was her grunting in my ear for 20 hours.
Still, it ties in with Cairn’s gameplay well, since most of these background storytelling sections act as natural rest points for Aava during her journey. At those spots, you can rest, relax, and refill your canteen or find food lying around to support the game’s survival elements. Cairn creates a nice balance between the stressful climbing portions and these calm story parts, and neither ends up lingering longer than you would like. It felt good to wrap up a harrowing section of a climb by learning about the people who lived in a hole in a mountain thousands of feet above sea level. With how expansive the game is, I found new little nooks and crannies on my second playthrough, each filled with its own small details and pieces of the civilization that had been there before. It helped to ease the burden of repetition most games get when you immediately go through them a second time.
Cairn, despite its flaws in having an iffy protagonist and the occasional control frustration, delivers an enjoyably gripping mountain climbing experience with plenty of intrigue scattered throughout. Filled with tons of interesting little secrets, bits of lore, and solid worldbuilding, it successfully marries its strong gameplay with its more meditative moments. All those 50 something falls struggling every mistakes every wrong piston every single step every line every latter just everything is so good I can't explain with words . Долго:
Игра поразила подходом к лазанью. В игре есть жумарчики, дюльфер, щелевое лазанье, лазанье на трении, ледолазанье и все это хорошо реализовано. Если в реальной жизни лезли мультипитчи в соло -- то все, чем отличается -- не нужно проходить веревку три раза, точки за вас собирает робот, он же вас и страхует. Т.е игра весьма реалистична, а дроченые и сухие, как магнезия, моменты -- ушли на второй план.
История мне очень понравилась. Она передается через мир, СТЕНЫ по которым вы лезите и персонажей. Последние же очень колоритные и хорошо подпадают уже под реальные стереотипы.
Стиль ебейший. Саунд внезапно порадовал.

Игра поразила подходом к лазанью. В игре есть жумарчики, дюльфер, щелевое лазанье, лазанье на трении, ледолазанье и все это хорошо реализовано. Если в реальной жизни лезли мультипитчи в соло -- то все, чем отличается -- не нужно проходить веревку три раза, точки за вас собирает робот, он же вас и страхует. Т.е игра весьма реалистична, а дроченые и сухие, как магнезия, моменты -- ушли на второй план.
История мне очень понравилась. Она передается через мир, СТЕНЫ по которым вы лезите и персонажей. Последние же очень колоритные и хорошо подпадают уже под реальные стереотипы.
Стиль ебейший. Саунд внезапно порадовал.

The character is mean and full of rage. I couldnt stand that she was yelling and screaming at the smallest fall. No enough backstory to help me understand why is she so angry all the time and not even return a single call or when her pet died. I understand that people have weakness, and things that they want to escape from. However, it is just so unpleasant to play the character where you're not given choices to change anything. (Eventhough i was climbing my ass all the way up in hope that she might be better/find an answer/or maybe return a call)..

I spent the first 1.5 hours of my playtime trying to climb all 8 of the walls in the gym before realizing I hadn't even started the actual game yet (you only need to complete the first 3 and the rest are just challenges).

Even with manual limb selection it's painful to get on ledges. My first day playing the auto limb selection was work great, getting on to ledges was automatic. But ever since I've restarted the game the auto select limbs is broken and I keep falling because Aava keeps climbing ON TO the flat ledge, then rolls backwards off the cliff we just climbed lol. I give the game a 6/10 but assuming I can get the controls fixed it's a 8/10.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

As a climber, it was fun to solve holds and routes, but holy crap i do not want to spend my free time listening to Aava be the worst person ever. They try to make her sound hardened and all that crap, but real alpinists (Alex Honnold, Tommy Caldwell) are not nearly as big of jerks (if at all, basing off of documentaries and youtube) as Aava, who is the biggest jerk i've ever played as. Completely insufferable, beautiful game, if there was a mod to smiply remove her from the game that would be awesome. Lost my review virginity for this.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tthis game means a lot to me. i played it at the perfect time in my life. the story seems sparse but really isn't when you pay attention. lots of throwaway lines that tell us all we need to know about our main character and the handful of people she meets on the mountain.
