\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI've seen a handful of reviews that say you'd only like this game if you're nostalgic for the classics and wanted to chime in saying that this doesn't matter. I never meaningfully played GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, or TimeSplitters on account of only having a PC back when I was younger, but I did run through an emulated GoldenEye a few years back, so it's not nostalgia speaking when I recommend this. I really appreciate the oldschool design philosophy and style of games like this. Aesthetically this is quite appealing and is a faithful throwback to simpler times in gaming.

Agent 64 really preserves that aspect of playing either of these games for the first time. Except now, I don't have friends at school or a playground to discuss things. I'm entirely on my own, so it's truly like playing the classic Rare FPS N64 titles without any help. Incredibly well-executed, and it has its very own flavor of challenges. Still plenty of new concepts for experienced players.
Some complain about the cypher system, but I haven't had any issues. If anything, I have an excess of them and can't really find any place to spend all of them. I suppose YMMV depending on your mechanics and understanding of movement, positioning, aim, and reload management. Yes, can you believe a video game like this actually requires strategy and skill?
Another legitimate complaint I've seen is the lack of crouching. Although I get it from the player character's perspective. It gets difficult to bend your knees and get back up at John's age. Much easier to keep your back straight by staying upright and moving around.
My only personal gripe with the game is very specific to a few levels and challenges. It's the utter inescapable inaccuracy inherent to a few weapons that are found throughout entire levels where enemies have the benefit of distance on you. When you are in an enemy's line of sight (LoS) for too long, their bullets will hit you once their spray lines up with your character. On 64 Agent, only being able to take 3 hits in these very specific situations where:
1. The main weapon used by enemies is inherently inaccurate and may take up to 8 shots until one actually lands in the middle of your crosshair
2. Enemies have you in their LoS from long distances, making those 8 shots incredibly difficult to hit without running out of ammunition, so you either compromise your position by running toward them or running back into cover and wait for these enemies to run to you, wasting time on par runs
3. Enemies on 64 Agent will hit you from any distance if you are in LoS for over 2 seconds, forcing you to close the gap in those 2 seconds or risk having to restart the mission due to being KIA.
Yes, I'm mainly talking about the TypeW. All the challenges and levels that require using it as your main weapon because no other weapon is feasible at distance or you just run out of Sparrow ammo are incredibly painful, so those challenges are left to RNG in the TypeW's immediate uncontrollable bloom/spread.
I've actually spent 8 bullets from a TypeW just to destroy a 2-hit surveillance camera while completely still at about 5 meters away. 8 bullets isn't much, but it adds up when you have the same accuracy against enemies as well.
The TypeW isn't the only weapon that suffers from uncontrollable and immediate bloom/spread, but it's the worst offender. I'm fine with inaccuracies with growing bloom if firing a weapon at full auto or even after a short burst, but having the first bullet miss 7 times in a row while completely at rest and intentionally aiming feels worse than having your soul gripped and pulled out through your kneecaps while simultaneously licking a Nintendo Switch cartridge in the middle of a desert on a hot Summer day as sea urchins rain down from above. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAgent 64 is a very good spiritual successor to GoldenEye. Is it as good as the latter? No, but that's a very difficult standard that I don't think this game should be held to. The only issue that Agent 64 has is that it somewhat lacks a unique identity of its own, but that's hardly an issue seeing as retro FPS games of this nature are rare enough on newer hardware that just playing this game feels unique. I have not tried the multiplayer, but the singleplayer modes are very fun. The missions all feel very different from each other theme and gameplay-wise, and they offer enough content and freedom to be a good length to just sit down and play for either 10 minutes or 2 hours. The weapon selection is somewhat limited, but there's at least one of each of everything you could think of. The challenges and custom PVE modes are a lot of fun, and the additional cheat codes and bonus mission challenges are nice to see. It's a good simple game to just play.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The animations are too fast and janky seemingly with fewer frames than the original, there is no crouch button and no leaning that I've found - something which I relied upon in Goldeneye to get the right angle and often finding myself wish for). The artwork isn't up to the same standard - Goldeneye baked lighting in a way that made you swear the game had bump-maps, this games textures feel flat. It feels like a game that should have launched before Goldneye, unrefined but leading the way... only it's 2026.
Simple fixes like incredibly inconsistent enemy hearing; sure no one wanted a repeat of Bunker 2 with the entire level constantly aware of where you are but often it feels like hearing is backed up by sight, whatever sound you make if they can't see you they won't react.
But here is the thing; I keep coming back to it. What made Goldeneye a truly addictive single player experience is definitely here. The rinse and repeat, learning the levels in order to get a little bit further each time, learning the patterns, to set an enemy off firing before. The music doesn't reach the same highs as Goldeneye but you could absolutely believe what is there was part of the original soundtrack. Level design is strong for the most part.

I think that its well made and has a great amount of content, and that content is of good quality; for example, each difficulty mode gives a good new twist to the same level such that playing each level on escalating difficulties is fun. Levels themselves are very diverse and interesting. Each one has a par timer, which you can race against for more unlockables. As you play the game, you unlock new multiplayer and single player effects, again giving the incentive to go again, with snipers or big heads or unlimited ammo. The few multiplayer maps you have at the start are pretty good as well, if a bit large. Multiplayer is a romp with friends.
My problem with this game is that it has to compete with other games for my attention; while levels are fun and gameplay is good, the gameplay is based on nostalgia. It does little to advance the design of the games that inspire it. It is impressive that someone has made all of this content with such quality. However, many of the ideas are copy paste from games that truly broke ground. 1. sorry audio guy, but the sfx and music are not good. the gun sfx has no punch, and the music is not memorable and half of the tracks used dont even fit the level or the game. not only that but the last 3 levels use the same track. the night club level has probably one of the most ill fitting songs used in video games period - we muted the game and played the john wick and hitman 2 club songs instead.
2. hidden masks need a better indicator - ANY indicator, when near them. a subtle purple glow would have been nice. we spent more time in the first 5 levels looking for the masks than the entire game combined. also theres no way to tell which levels youve found masks on, which means after a few play sessions we gave up on finding them entirely.
3. the menu was designed as an afterthought and makes me question if youve ever played a video game that wasnt built on unity before. seriously compare your UX to even goldeneye 64 lol, its somehow worse than a game from 30 years ago. please get a UI/UX guy. PLEASE.
4. achievements and cutscenes are totally broken when in done in coop. most of the cutscenes auto skipped for the host, and players are RANDOMLY unlocking achievements. i unlocked the act 1 and the credits achievements but not act 2 or act 3 achievements. how can this happen?
anyway its like a solid 6/10. play it if you like boomer shooters.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Another issue is general lack of quality imo, its weird seeing cool details IN THE TRAILER that get undone in the game, not to mention something as simple as the achievement icons are straight up just the games splash art but cropped weird repeatedly? im not one to care too much about that sort of thing, but it doesnt feel like a creative decision and instead feels EXTREMELY LAZY. NOT worth 20$ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dollars.
