HOWEVER,

It is also incredibly minimal and dry in its presentation. It doesn't have nearly the same amount of aesthetic sauce as the game it wants to be a spiritual successor to. No pre-mission documents or briefings, no fun unique UI, no goated pause menu, nothing but bland white text in extremely minimal presentation.

The gameplay itself; the running through the levels, trying to get that time, is almost all there. Almost perfect. Its enemy AI however, is actually less complex and more dumb than Goldeneye. They do not share the same awareness.

It's still a great game worth playing, but I really hope these things can be patched in. It's not a TRUE successor with such bland presentation, just a worthy pretender.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm in a strange position where I like this game but cannot recommend it to general audiences. I'll start with a couple positives. The gunplay is satisfying and general gameplay *feels* like how the mind remembers Rare shooters. Mowing down bad dudes is plain fun, and accented by exploding terrain and shattering glass. You've got some weapon variety here and there despite a somewhat standard arsenal. The vibes are a welcomed shot of nostalgia though and through. Quite a few maps are present (how they are acquired will be touched on in the negatives) and touch on all the tropes you'd expect. It ticks the general boxes of being a fun-enough run n' gun. And it is that. But what about anything else?

Agent 64 struggles with any sort of identity. The game is so laser focused on just being GoldenEye that it hardly bothers pretending to be anything else. The plot is barebones, delivered via poorly written dialogue that flows like a first draft. I didn't go in expecting a narrative masterpiece here (it's Goldeneye!), but the story is so clunky it actively pulls me away from any sort of immersion. There's next to zero context as to what is going on in any mission or why you have the objectives you do. It feels aimless.

Initial playthroughs of a mission on Agent difficulty are straightforward and seldom require you use any of the gadgets you are deployed with. You usually stroll from A to B, shootin dudes along the way. They're dead simple (often overly so) but tick the box of giving you reactive targets to shoot at in familiar locations. Sometimes you'll run into clearly detailed portions of a level blocked off by boxes or bars. What's up with that? That's because they're only accessible on higher difficulties.

You have to replay the missions at each difficulty level to get to these places and complete the objectives within. It makes the more difficult variations objectively more interesting to play since you might actually have to use a gadget once. Revel in that time, because the gadgets are otherwise totally useless. They don't just give you gadgets at difficulties where you can use them either. It's common you'll be loaded into a level with 10 of a gadget you literally do not have to use once, or serves 0 purpose at all. That approach applies to anything. Computers, disk drive sleds, and any number of interesting looking bits and bobs still exist on Agent difficulty and can even be interacted with despite lacking functionality. There is utility in replaying the missions. I respect the design of getting a handle on a basic layout before being confronted with a challenge, but the execution feels haphazard. You better like replaying the missions too, because you're gonna have to.

Each act is locked behind a "Cipher" requirement, a currency earned from beating missions at each difficulty level. This means you cannot proceed to the next act just by beating the previous act on Agent. You have to replay multiple missions at a higher challenge to proceed at all. This mentality on content gating is also, strangely, used for unlocking maps and features in the multiplayer Arena mode.

Yeaaaah. Multiplayer, the main feature I assume most folks would be interested in this game for, starts out extremely barebones. You begin with 3 maps and a limited selection of modifiers. I've been told there are 12 unlockable maps, which I hoped were unlocked by playing through their related story mission once. That's not the case. They are unlocked through a special challenge mode instead, and you ALSO need to unlock THAT. If you were looking to pop the game on with some buddies and have a fun night of screen peeking and pizza, you're gonna be disappointed by the pittance of initial content. Buckle up for an (admittedly fun) multi-hour binge to even start pounding out new maps and gamemodes.

It's not a bad game at all, but Agent 64 fumbles in multiple critical regards and fails to stick the landing. It's a good enough time for people just wanting to play GoldenEye again. I just think there are better ways to do that. I applaud the dev for sticking it through to release, and I think it's a dope game, but the experience is marred by an ill-fitting progression system and an underwhelming campaign.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is more of a neutral review, but I feel like I have to balance out the positive reviews by pointing out aspects I'm really not enjoying. I just have a lot of expectations for a game following the pedigree of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, but it's also true there aren't many others actually attempting to even make a game like this anymore.

In general the feeling of the guns is perfectly fine, the aim assistance is very faithfully recreated, but a lot of quality of life features from Perfect Dark make no such appearance here, there's no equipment wheel for quick switching, for instance. A lot of the stage design feels very disjointed and like a series of rooms with no real connection or purpose to each other, to me it feels more like how stages are designed for Doom than for Rare's shooters, which isn't a bad thing in itself, but means the locations never really make much cohesive sense or feel like places you can explore. The stages are incredibly linear point A to B affairs with the occasional stop to use a gadget on an item and that's as complex as it gets early on.

The way you unlock new stages is incredibly obtuse. It's not just enough to beat a previous stage on the desired difficulty level, you need to have earned enough currency by beating previous stages on *multiple* difficulty levels. I hit the point where just playing on Secret Agent wasn't enough, I'd have to replay stages on Agent and I just... Felt no desire to. So I decided to take a moment to check out the multiplayer and challenge modes.

The multiplayer is a mixed bag. There sure appear to be a lot of unlockables, which is wonderful to see, and they even have a multitude of AI types, similar to the variety of simulants in Perfect Dark, including bots that will pick up every weapon they can find and then only use melee. However, the stages are very small and not really suited to the game modes on offer. King of the Hill, or Zones, is very welcome, but less so when the enemy team continuously spawn inside the zone you're protecting. Weapons respawn incredibly quickly too, giving you an abundance of ammunition and leaving little room for guarding their spawn points or denying opponents access to them.

It's definitely a game you may want to check out, but having expectations in check is important and having recently replayed through both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, this game feels like what you think those old shooters were like and less what they actually were. There's a lot of room for improvement.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI was a kid when Goldeneye came out and I would spend hours playing with friends, years later Perfect Dark came out and improved upon the foundation GE set.

The game is definitely a love letter to those games in terms of visuals and gameplay. However, I do feel like more effort could have been made to make it go beyond than just a homage and create a better and more compelling narrative as well as establish some other characters.

It's not a bad game at all and if you enjoyed those games mentioned above, you are in for a treat. But it leaves a little more to be desired and I understand this is a passion project from a single dev, which did a fantastic job in re creating those N64 shooters, so I can't really review this negatively.\t\t\t\t\t

I have to say this feels like a very solid throwback to old N64 shooters I grew up with, not far in but thoroughly enjoying it so far.

\n\t\t\t\t\tGreat love letter to classic N64 shooters. I beat the main campaign in 3 hours on the hardest difficulty, but then spent two more hours getting all the target times to unlock all the cheats and bonus modifiers and that's just 35% of the game completion.

There are a lot of multiplayer challenges vs bots similar to Perfect Dark that I have yet to take a look at, as well as the modified singleplayer levels you unlock by finding "faces" around each level. Offers a lot of replayability value and after all this time in development it's great to finally see it here.

AI is kinda stupid and once you learn their attack patterns it's quite easy, but some of the cheats took a while to get right, very tight timings on some of them. They nailed the weapon sway effect and it felt amazing to play this with my N64 controller. Definitely recommended for N64 fans.\t\t\t\t\t

This is the most "Goldeneye" like game to come out since Perfect Dark, gameplay is just as intense as I remembered it 29 years ago (Agent64 difficulty feels great, especially with auto aim turned off).
If you have any nostalgia for Goldeneye on N64 then this game is a must-buy.

Now that I've finished the campaign I do have some complaints about the general gameplay, enemy AI is rudamentary, it behaves as you expect in combat but is generally not aware of gunbshots or dead soldiers. You can't crouch, which might not seem like a big deal at first but there is the odd occasion where you wish that you could, and the lack of special guns with bullet penetration through doors and objects makes combat strategy much more simple. Overall there's a collection of snaggles that make the original Goldeneye feel more immersive.

With a dose of noistalgia I had a lot of fun playing Agent64, but I'll agree casual players unfamiliar with Goldeneye should really find a way to play the original first.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI think the game is exactly what it’s supposed to be—a spiritual successor to the GoldenEye gameplay of the ’90s. It nails that objective-based spy/espionage feel in both the best and worst ways. The worst being no checkpoints: you either clear the whole mission or you don’t.

Difficulty feels fair overall, though the hardest setting is genuinely punishing—you have to play near-perfectly. I wouldn’t call it unfair, just demanding.

Ultimately it runs great, plays great, and has solid controller support. I’m using a Steam Controller and the trackpad aiming feels excellent while the rest of the controller works like a normal gamepad. Mouse and keyboard would presumably feel just as good. There’s also online multiplayer, though I haven’t tried it yet.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI wish I could say I liked this more than I do. I love Perfect Dark, GoldenEye not so much but I still enjoy it, but Agent 64 just misses in a lot of important ways that makes playing it feel gauche.

For the record, I finished the first three missions on a couple of difficulties each, played a couple of the early Paradox challenges, and a handful of botmatches. I saw I had just enough time to get a refund and realised I didn't really want to play the game anymore.

-The difficulty is a bit too overtuned to my liking. Agent and Secret Agent are cakewalks, while 64 Agent is too much by comparison - comparable to its inspirations yes, but damn, even Perfect Dark gave you room for one or two more mistakes. It doesn't help that the objectives I saw that are added on higher objectives are a bit too 'do what you already did anyway'. Perfect Dark was excellent for taking you off the beaten path and in this game I didn't quite feel the same way, at least in the first few missions.

-The campaign AI is shoddy in a couple of ways. One, it doesn't notice some really obvious things - an open courtyard with four dudes don't notice when you take out their friends in line of sight with an unsilenced weapon, and it bothers me to no end, like the AI all live in their own invisible bubble. Two, the behaviors are really canned, even by the inspiration's standards: in Perfect Dark at least, they could do things like only fire a short burst, a long burst, stroll towards you on magdump, run for cover, do a dodge roll while shooting at you. In Agent 64, they roll from time to time, but they mostly do the exact same behaviors - walk at you, stop to fire a burst that's the same length every time, or just wander off despite the fact there's a firefight going on in the same room, and it seems to be tied to the weapon they're holding - if you see one guard with a Viper MK1, you've seen them all. Three, the AI isn't touched at all by the difficulty, they act exactly the same way on all three, they're just more likely to hit you and do more damage when they do. It all adds some to some really boring design and I'd had enough of it by the time I got to act 2.

-Problems with input. I played this on both my Steam Deck and my desktop PC, and there's some kind of input lag on both that makes firing your gun feel really unreliable. It's hard to tell if this is from not being allowed to shoot or act after you've been shot for a moment (more a GoldenEye thing) or if it's actually a problem with the fire command. Also, the setting for aiming with the crosshair is too sensitive and the option in the menu to turn it up or down doesn't actually work, so I found it completely unreliable to use. Having to swap weapons and gadgets the same way as GoldenEye when Perfect Dark figured out the weapon wheel 25 years ago feels wrong.

-I don't like the music at all. It all feels like it's missing a melody, a background set of instruments, or both. The dynamic switching between tracks isn't all that impressive either. It fades into the background really quickly and doesn't leave an impression at all. I can still pull up the Carrington Institute theme on command.

-I don't like how this handles unlocking content. They do give you a prompt to play through on Agent first, then on higher difficulties, to unlock "Cyphers" which unlock...well, I'm not sure, but I had to spend four Cyphers to unlock the second Act, which feels against the point of a story-driven game like this one and not something the inspirations ever did. However, you can play "Paradox missions" which give you a modified version of the original, but it means hunting down and finding face masks to shoot in the missions in order to get them, which means you have to replay a mission to 'replay' a mission to get to new missions if you just want to breeze through on Agent difficulty for a lark. It feels wrong. It would be better if you unlocked the Paradox missions with the Cyphers while having standard progression with the main missions, then have the Paradox cheats be unlocked with good performance (although I have no godforsaken clue how you're expected to beat the castle in 2:40, either you're calling back to the CamSpy trick in the G5 Building or that needs to be raised at least another minute).

-And the botmatches...well, I didn't play too much of them, but I will say the one thing that convinced me I wasn't really having fun was when I played an Advanced League match, walked up to an Intermediate-difficulty bot firing a 45-round SMG mag at me non-stop, face-to-face, and didn't get hit once, while doing that in the campaign just gets you killed. It filled me with a dissonance I haven't been quite able to shake since I stopped playing to write this review.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI played A LOT of Goldeneye back in the day, and even recently played both GE and Perfect Dark with KBM controls, and I'm going to do a lot comparing to GE/PD since those games are clearly its inspiration. This game is just not it and a lot of issues I have with the game were present merely on the first few levels:

  • Movement is way too "sluggish" and doesn't feel right. In GE, you could move normally with the joystick/C-pad or move faster by moving diagonally (strafe). Having a way to strafe would really improve this game, whether it helps to save your ass from dying or creates more movement options/tech for speedrunners.
  • Lack of crouch in a game made in the modern day is just inexcusable. Even GE, a game made in 1997, had a crouch feature. The ENEMIES in this game can crouch, but I can't. What sense does that make? I think it's fine to not have things like R-lean, as much as that would be really cool, but not having a crouch is just insane.
  • Speaking of enemies, the enemies/enemy AI, especially on harder difficulties, are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, borderline unfair. They can gun me down from the most ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ angles or distances possible because they have the line of sight like a hawk, very quick reaction times, and the accuracy of a sniper. Some enemies are placed VERY far such that you have to shoot longshots and hope to God they don't hit you first (chances are they do). Others are placed in very weird angles where they can see and shoot you (sometimes through level geometry), but you don't have a clear shot.
    Perfect Dark perfected the enemy AI that was created in GE: their LOS is reasonable and not too far and their reaction time and accuracy are both fair in relation to how much damage they can deal if they hit you. Made it feel like any hits you take are mostly on you. The modern-day lighting and graphics also don't help either because the enemies can be harder to see but they can see you crystal clear.
  • I'm not far enough in the game to see for myself, but apparently there's a "cipher system" where you basically have to play missions on harder difficulties to progress the main story. That is absolutely asinine. GE had something similar, that was mostly for the BONUS missions, not the missions for the base game. It's such a weird way to pad out game time.
  • Less of a comparison to GE, but I've had a few instances where enemies just spawn out of nowhere behind me and get a free hit, which on 64 Agent difficulty could result in an easy death.
  • Since everyone else is pointing it out, I will too: Easy Anti Cheat in this kinda game is kinda ridiculous.

I can acknowledge there was A LOT of love put into this game and properly pays homage to GE/PD. I really want to see this game improve, but as it stands right now, it's a no for me and I hate that this is how I feel.\t\t\t\t\t
