If you want to stop reading now, I would strongly recommend to only play up until the credits run. If I had taken that advice, this might be a positive review.
This game is primarily a poor example of a 'deckbuilder' which is pretending to be a puzzle game. There are many puzzles within it which are enjoyable and worth solving, and many 'puzzles' which are glorified keycard setups which just require drafting the correct rooms in the correct order.
This primary mechanic does not have enough flesh to it to allow for easily setting up the puzzles, which leads to spending hours testing theories or failing to carry out a puzzle solution you have understood but requires some setup.
Many puzzles rely on the player having screenshot some important information previously - there is no in game log for this information, so if you miss it you need to go back and find it - sometimes you need to have an item which is only accessible on some runs to be able to see the information at all (so even if you did screenshot it, time to go get it again). This adds to the mystery of the setting, but undermines the puzzle aspect.
Some of the late game puzzles are hidden behind extremely obscure steps. One of these I realised was going to be impossible so I read the wiki for the solution - and to even successfully carry out the next step of the puzzle was going to take so long that I decided to stop playing.
One of the late game puzzles hints the player down a path the spiral of stars.., which if you follow it through requires you to repeat the same trivial action in the game over a hundred times to then find nothing. You could argue this is a tie in with one of the games themes being that 'not all mysteries need a solution' - but I think this is an interesting idea from the developer which backfired into what comes across as a cruel joke.
Story spoilers below, but basically more 'cruel joke' feeling stuff from the game at what might be considered the second ending.
blue door Tunnel 'reward'
You get the 3 boxes at the end of the tunnel - one says 'this is the end' and one says 'there is no end'. The there is no end box pushes the player toward the spiral of stars, which I have already discussed.
The 'this is the end' box therefore should be the 'correct' ending - but the book's text suggests that Simon has accepted to become a shut-in ruler of his manor (and no more), never to take back the throne as the rest of the plot has been building towards. As far as I can tell, there is nothing further to this plot thread. So, in either case, Simon's fate is to endlessly roam Mount Holly's halls, repeatedly drafting new rooms - which is exactly what we've been doing as the player for the last 90 hours. My interpretation of this is basically that the game is saying 'what you're doing is wasting your time'. So why would it be made like this then?
There is so much intrigue and build up for what becomes a nothing story - the stealing of the crown, the unearthing of the Orindian castle and associated blackprints, the police state and Bon Margles' investigation - all of this ultimately leads nowhere. This would have been, for me, forgivable - maybe after you close the game Simon continues and becomes king of the realm. This is the implication when credits roll after initially opening room 46 and seeing the crown. But the text of the Blue Prince book tells us that Simon is to stay in the castle and look at blue only at home.. undoing the entirety of the intrigue up to this point.
I am aware there is another 'ending', but it doesn't develop Simon's story in any way. Having read the wiki, it is unfortunate that these final few more interesting puzzles would be preceded by more hours of busywork puzzles.
Ultimately, all of these quibbles would have been fine, but fundamentally I think the amount of time that this game's design asks of any player is substantially too high for the actual content.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I won't look it up, though, because aside from just being a complexly deep puzzle game, Blue Prince has such a vibe, such interesting lore, and it is such a joy to discover new things in it, that even after not touching the game for a year, I can't imagine a world where I don't come back to climb that mountain at some point. It's left a great impact on me and I think about it regularly, even if I keep telling myself "I'll come back to it later", worried that if I jump into the rabbit hole again I'm not sure how long it'll take me to decide to crawl back out.
One thing that bothered me at first, around the 10 hour mark, was that the game's randomness mechanics (like the room placement or which rooms get drafted in the first place) can make it pretty hard, once you figured out what to do to solve a puzzle, to actually setup the pieces for that puzzle to be solvable again. I'd have a bunch of paper notes lying on my desk, with trails that I had solved a couple ingame days ago, and all that remained was to execute the plan I had in mind. To fail, again and again, to get the room when I needed it, was getting on my nerves a bit.
I took a break for a while, then, and came back with the new mindset that I would just let the puzzles wash over me for now. While I couldn't get to the puzzle I was trying to execute, four, five, six more puzzles would reveal themselves to me, at a rate where it was inevitable that something would get done each day, even if it wasn't what I expected. And then when I wasn't actively searching for it anymore, the puzzle I had hunted all this time would land on my lap, preceded by every other thing I had the pleasure to explore in the meantime.
I spoke with a friend about Blue Prince (without spoiling ourselves too much), and I imagined that we'd have progressed through it pretty differently, but was surprised by the extent at which some of the stuff I had almost fully explored were completely unknown to him, and vice versa. There were multiple times where I thought I had finsihed the story and everytime it just kept going and going and going. "Does it ever end?" The pacing gets a little off at some points, but I used hints online when I was really stuck so you don't have to grind much to unlock the story and the new rooms. I've read up and see others have experienced this with no solution. Not many things are more frustrating than finishing an epic, hour-long run with multiple key unlocks and progress finally made--only for the game to crash when you end the day. There is no save function in the game, there is no auto-save, so all progress in that run is lost. In my opinion this bug makes the game garbage.

It's a shame--I'm going to have to use mods just to make this game playable (and I really didn't want to, the difficulty is perfect if the saves were functional), the development team should fix this. However, after about 10 days the RNG of the gameplay loop becomes very tiresome and I found myself getting bored. It's extremely frustrating to learn new information, but then be unable to actually test the theories you draw from that because you just can't get the right blueprint at the right time. It makes it feel like the game does not respect your time, and at my age, I have very little patience for games like that anymore. Your goal is to not only make a path using these rooms, but examine each room as they contain puzzles or clues to other puzzles. You can also use items you find to give you an edge. However, you only have so much room and so much energy, so if you run out of either, you must end your day and reset your status and begin anew the next day, armed with only more knowledge.
The puzzles are inventive and even occasionally devilishly clever, but there is one thing that often holds them back from true greatness, and that is the game's own core loop. There's a fundamental flaw where you can absolutely know the solution to a puzzle, but you can't get to it because the correct room refuses to spawn in your pool, padding out the game time and unfortunately rather repetitive.

What you spend spend the first few hours doing will look as if a baby crawling upon the floor to you by your 50th hour.
Truly, I cannot begin to imagine how anyone, be it a single person or a whole team of people, can create a puzzle box this dense, with layers upon layers upon layers of things to unravel. There were times it was frustrating and there were times it was so wonderful that I got chills. I think it will remain one of those games that are impossible to discuss with anyone other than those who have already gone fully down the rabbit hole.
My biggest issue at the end of it all is that I have no idea who I'm going to be able to recommend this to amongst my friends. It's such a specific flavor of game, even in comparison to other distantly related works in the genre. And in this case I'm using "genre" quite loosely because to some extent there really is nothing else in gaming that does anything quite like what Blue Prince does. The closest comparison is to the book that inspired it all, Maze.

I want puzzle games to test my knowledge and intelligence, not test my luck. I feel like I've LOST BRAIN CELLS playing Blue Prince. There is just so much frustrating randomness in the game, especially late game after getting past Room 46.
While it is a good game, it is so deeply flawed that it does not deserve all the acclaim it has gotten from professional critics. I feel like I've been tricked.
This game is SO DISRESPECTFUL to player's time. Late game, it takes hours to roll the right conditions just to solve a specific problem. And the puzzles themselves are often super vague word puzzles that require tons of guesswork. The logical answer is usually not the correct answer the devs are looking for.
And the puzzles are so repetitive. I was so tired of solving the same puzzles over and over and over and over and over and over and OVER AGAIN because the game resets every day. The dartboard and lock puzzles nearly broke me. They take SO LONG to solve, and they're not fun after the 20th time, and especially not fun after the 100th time. They're a time-wasters.
- It sucks because there are no mid-game saves when a single run can last 2 hours
- It sucks because the late-game puzzles are vague and often just guesswork. The "A New Clue" puzzles are super vague. The Aries puzzles are super vague. At least one of the sigils requires guesswork.
- It sucks because there are so many red herrings. The game will drop tons of clues that end up being completely misleading and inconsistent. I've spent hours trying to roll the specific conditions to solve a puzzle only to find out that I've been following a red herring left by careless devs.
- It sucks because some of the puzzles can't be solved if you miss a single hard-to-find clue.
- It sucks because 2 of the puzzles require waiting in the same spot for up to 90 minutes, which is a huge energy waste
- It sucks because I have to replay the same puzzles over and over again. Doing the chess puzzle multiple times was so annoying.
- It sucks because there is so much RNG involved in rolling the rooms. Late game puzzle requirements are far too rare, even with all the permanent upgrades.

Как только появляется какая-то догадка, которую хочется проверить, в дело вступает рандом, из-за которого ты тратишь уйму времени на то, чтобы нароллить нужные комнаты/предметы. Сама задумка прикольная, конечно, но очень уж сильно игра таким образом растягивает геймплей и размазывает загадки по забегам.

The devs are so worried about save scumming (in a single-player game!), that they only let you save between runs. My runs can easily last over an hour! So if you happen to be about an hour deep in a really good run, and your PC crashes, you lose that hour of progress! Ask me how I know. I give it a 9/10. If you read the negative reviews 90% of them will shout "it's rNg!" and honestly, it is. It's 3 roguelite deckbuilders dressed up in a puzzle trenchcoat. Still not worth a negative review, it's honestly really good, but you have to kinda toil over it, ykno?
I'm never going to play this again, but you should at least play it to credits once if you're a fan of puzzle games. Any fans of The Witness or Myst will be right at home here. If there was a mod or update that removed the RNG altogether over time (thus rewarding you for actually figuring out the RNG in the first place), I would recommend this game. As it stands now, you'll be stuck rolling the dice on room layouts for HOURS until you finally get the layout you need to progress.
This sort of gameplay doesn't resonate with me, someone who doesn't have spare hours to sink into mere dice rolls. I'd rather sink my hours into games with progression systems. Or, if it's going to be a game that relies on knowledge to progress (like Outer Wilds does and like what Blue Prince tries to do), games without RNG so I can actually tackle the puzzles when I get the knowledge. But with Blue Prince, even if you have the knowledge, you won't be able to progress until you get the right dice roll.
For people with the spare time this will be an AMAZING game. For the rest of us, we have YouTube lol\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
