The roguelike aspect is fun, having to plan your route each new day and hope you get good room choices. Sometimes you get the worst ones and it feels like the game is intentionally coded to be as unfun as possible. Sometimes it is just bad luck, but most of the time it's poor planning.
In terms of puzzle difficulty, most are able to be solved using things in the same room, logic and basic English. The rest you'll want to keep a collection of notes/screenshots to reference, as the game suggests early on. I'm not ashamed to admit I spent 7 hours on one puzzle alone, consulting AI for hints, before giving up and Googling the answer. I never would have gotten it otherwise.

It is like an onion: I kept peeling back the layers and found more lore and mysteries. I love it. It took me a while of noting down everything and wracking my brain over obscure hints to get to the end, but nothing has been more satisfying than seeing all my conspiracy-theorizing bearing fruit. Obviously this game is incredible. It rightly has a lot of clout and critical acclaim. The main thesis statment here is new and novel and well executed (for the most part). And for the people that had a grandiose time; I couldn't be happier for them. And I wouldn't want the game to change for me and the few people that had an unlucky or bad time. When that could take away from the many that had a great time with this game.
At first I was having a lot of fun learning more and more about the manor. Then eventually I was seeing less new things and just the same rooms not being presented in an order that would let me progress. I had managed to make a significant permanent change to a room and was excited to enter it to progess the game. However, I would consistently have runs where I would either have the right resources to get there but the selection of rooms wouldn't allow for it; or vice versa. And after about a dozen or so days of little to no real progress and just running through the same rooms doing the same stuff. I couldn't see the point in continuing.
A possible solution would be more keys or less locked doors. But due to the value of special keys, keep the amount of locked doors but increase the key spawns. I was vacuuming the floor for more keys and it still wasn't enough. And just rolling my eyes over every nook and cranny before leaving every room wasn't a fun use of my time.
The main reason this was frustrating was because I was excited to interact with the game more. The puzzles were amazing and fun. But whenever I wanted to play the game, I was denied by RNG. Which wouldn't be so bad if the game at its core wasn't fun.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I knew almost nothing about the game before I purchased it other than it was a roguelite puzzler, which is an interesting concept to me.
After reaching Day 21 and having numerous days along the way where not even a slight amount of progress can be made due to terrible RNG I decided to stop investing any more time in it. I started to notice that more and more things require RNG to line up perfectly in order for me to proceed, and if they don't, I have to start over, which makes it very hard to judge how many hours I will need to invest in order to finish the game.
I'm curious about the world, the puzzles, etc., but I have zero faith that I will get the RNG I need to continue and finish the game in the meager amount of free time that I have. There are just too many other good games out there that allow me to progress based on my skills and intelligence, rather than gating that behind a dice roll. In my opinion, RNG in games isn't itself a bad thing -- it's how developers have started to use it that makes it not fun. Good RNG based games create variety, bad RNG based games revoke agency. Good RNG based games create a unique and messy situation and let you to go solve it, while bad RNG based games roll some dice to see if you get to play a meaningful game today. If a player is doomed before the round/puzzle/level begins, then they're just being asked to spend time acting out a loss. "Please donate 2 hours of your time to the ether, thank you." In video games, loss feels bad, and should be reserved for people who have made a mistake, not people who didn't win a dice roll. In video games, if you lose, you should learn from that and then do better next time -- but in this game, when (not if!) you lose to RNG, you cannot learn from your mistake and do better next time.

I'm here to tell you: it's not always a skill issue. A slot machine is not a skill issue, and every time you draft a set of room cards in this game you're pulling a slot machine lever. Yes, eventually at some point in the game you will get things that you can use to reduce the effect of the RNG but until that happens you're basically sitting there, pulling the lever over and over until you finally get 3 cherries. But, personally I have zero desire to to suffer brutal dice rolls in my free time, even if they'll go away "eventually."
The games graphics are... fine. The audio is... passable. The puzzles that I experienced are mostly great (except for a few that ask a player to make leaps they really shouldn't have to, and you end up debugging the developer instead of solving the puzzle). The story seems really interesting from what I can tell.
But should you purchase and play it?
If you have dozens of hours to spend on dice rolls, and will not get frustrated with the outcomes that you have no control over, then yes, probably. The games graphics are... fine. The audio is... passable. The puzzles that I experienced are mostly great (except for a few that ask a player to make leaps they really shouldn't have to, and you end up debugging the developer instead of solving the puzzle). The story seems really interesting from what I can tell.
But should you purchase and play it?
If you have dozens of hours to spend on dice rolls, and will not get frustrated with the outcomes that you have no control over, then yes, probably. However, if you prioritize games where the developers value your time, or you have limited amounts of free time, or you dislike being sent back to checkpoints through no fault of your own, then no.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It is a fairly unique experience with good ideas locked behind terrible RNG and roguelike mechanics. The positive reviews are not totally inaccurate, just be wary that this game does not respect you nor your time. There is a severe imbalance in player agency which may or may not be a death sentence for your ability to enjoy a puzzle game. The positive moments are great but shortlived, and access to any particular goal is often not in your control. Imagine a mediocre Outer Wilds that decides your destination each run and whether or not you'll even have the fuel to get there.

On one hand there are aspects that are genius, especially some of the puzzles that have to play out over multiple days and the many times there are a-hah! moments where previous dangling clues click into place. The atmosphere, art, subtle music, and slow-burn story are extremely well done.
The biggest buzzkill is how grindy the game is right off the bat. Even though you do get some permanent unlocks as you play, those just help offset the increasing grind. For the first few hours, you're grinding until you get lucky arrangements of room choices to be able to progress. By the mid-game you can go further, have more rerolls, etc, but now you're at a point where you need specific rooms or configurations in order to progress. And all the while you end up being forced to solve the same puzzles dozens of times even though you figured out the solution 10+ hours ago. (I can't count how many times I had to take a starting number, add a number, divide by a number, and multiply by a number to find out what the 'solution' is.)
And then the unforgivable sin of not being able to save the game in the middle of the day. Most days end up taking 15-30 minutes, but sometimes you'll unexpectedly open up a new room or area that can take a hour or longer just for one room. So if you need to stop playing (because real life exists) you'll lose that hour+ of progress, or even more if it was a rare combo that you'll have to farm to repeat.
If you really like puzzles and don't mind repetitive purely luck-based grinding, this could be a great game for you. I can't really recommend it outside of that though.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I'm only a bit through the game but I would say that if you enjoyed Outer Wilds then this will invoke a similar feeling - of the more you learn, the more the game unfolds. This has a bit more permanency in the loop, and a bit more randomness (more akin to a traditional rogue-like) but is still really enjoyable!

I am now deep into the end-game, having beaten the main objective multiple times and - to my knowledge - completed many of the puzzles (Or I at least know, how to beat them - more on this later).
Yet, at the time of writing this review, I cannot recommend this game in it's current state.
I felt, as if the game did not respect my time, mainly due to two issues.
For one, many actions in this game are very slow paced. There are many unskippable cutscenes during which the player cannot move - from loading into the game, picking up items, interacting with objects and more. Each of these actions feel too long-winded and when added up, make for an experience where it feels as if half of the time spent in the game is looking at the same long animations over and over again.
(here is a list of some of the specific things that bothered me:
The slow-motion intro sequence everyday that zooms into the estate; item pickups always lock the players movement and show the tutorial text; the same movement lock applies to dig-spots; digging up burried treasure is possibly the longest non-interactable unskippable cutscene (with the majority of it being a black screen mind you) in the game; When exiting to the main menu after the loading icon dissappears, it takes like 5 seconds before the black screen dissappears and you can actually click on the buttons;)
For the second issue let me describe the following scenario:
I just got a clue that makes me realize the solution to a puzzle that I have been chasing. Naturally I now want to immediately go solve this puzzle, only to get stopped either by my own lack of skill choosing the right rooms in the drafting pool, lacking resources, incorrect room orientations blocking my progress or some other reason. This takes my initial eagerness to progress and converts it into frustration. This happened quite often, even stretching over multiple runs, for example because certain room types did not get drafted into my selection at all. I have seen in other reviews that RNG is quite often a frustration and even leads to people stop playing Blue Prince alltogether, which is a shame, because it is a great game at it's core.
While I think (or hope) that this game is not purely RNG based and that certain behind the scenes mechanics make the room drafting pool, room orientations, item spawns and such luckier in favour of the players, I think these values should be tweaked to be even more favourable.
(Room orientation is one big aspect here in my opinion because there are many instances in my playthroughs where the rooms that I drafted lead into a dead end with the other door(s). One simple room rotation in favour of the player would open up a way to progress.)
Both of these issues could be addressed in patches, which is why I will be looking out for updates. I would love to change this review from a negative to a positive review, as this is a great game that sadly does not value your time in my opinion.
Some additional notes:
- I would love to see more audio settings to tweak music and sound effects independently. Sometimes I would like to listen to my own music and still have sound effects.
- I once had a performance issue where it started hitching every two seconds, a restart of my pc did fix this issue but it might be something to look into.
- a very minor issue, but the grass view culling in the cloister is inside the field of view and lets the players see grass pop into view.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI enjoy the game quite a bit, good job. but i think there are probably a couple of improvements that would help the game feel better
1) introduce mid day auto saving, late game runs are fairly long and not being able to quit out on them is fairly inconvienant.
2) add a few more sources of "meta" progression such as the allowance coins, as it stands right now it feels fairly bad to have a deep run end because you do not have the right doors at the end. If runs more consistantly yeild allowance or similar meta progession items, in the mid game you wouldnt feel as disapointed when the run ends to bad rng.
3) One of the rooms should let you move the foundations spawn for future runs, i didnt think much about there location when i put the room down and its really badly placed, i know there is a way to remove it but it seems a little bit challanging to get going.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I didn't play it earlier because the idea of it being a roguelite put me off, but it really works well with the game now that I have played the game for a while.
