\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI looked forward to this game with great excitement about the crafty graphics and folklore tales, but ultimately ended up disappointed with how heavily it leaned into the platformer genre at the sake of its storytelling and choices-matter potential. The setting is beautiful, the characters are diverse, the music is right up my valley, alas having played to the end, I feel very disillusioned.
I found the game laid a disproportionate level of urgency on mastering the skill of surviving the dark of the caves, whilst the otherwise very real horror of searching for your children, which are facing the possibility of a brutal death and sacrifice somewhere alone in the dark, faded somewhere in the background. When out of nowhere, seemingly an inch away from retreaving your children, you find yourself on a series of fetch quests centred around another Slavic/Czech folktale item — as if included in the game to add a second folk element last minute — the urgency of your maternal situation dissipates entirely.
The final boss fight (in no way did I anticipate an actual boss fight from this game's promo or demo) took me some two hours (over a quarter of my gameplay total) and clouded all my previous enjoyment of the game. Narrative-wise it leaves all to imagination, as the enemy goes straight into conflict, and the mechanics are ruthlessly unforgiving.
I loved the moments when chase sequences synchronised with music, loved animated dialogue text boxes indicating accent or tremor in the character's voice, loved the art style of dialogue windows (rich character with a rich coloured fabric designed window, old character with the fabric tattered), loved being able to pet every sheep along the way. This game contains a lot of whimsy.
Overall however, I felt more rage at the mechanical choreography of the cave chases and the final fight than I felt any sympathy or terror for my character— the emotions I actually expected to willfully suffer through when I turned the game on.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I really enjoyed the world and narrative and wish there'd been more of it. Guess they're following my granddad's old advice, always leave them wanting more of it!

I chose to finish the game in one sitting but with the lanterns in town it'd be easy to figure out what quest you were last working on. The controls were easy to figure out and different puzzle mechanics were explained seamlessly into the mini-quests throughout the game instead of having a clunky tutorial that showcases everything. As someone who doesn't play many platformers I found the final battle to be challenging to figure out with my chat and very rewarding to finally beat.

Positives I want to mention are the storyline, the folklore, and the art. The game is very beautiful and I loved the aesthetic.
Negatives... I found the random fetch quests in the middle of the story confusing and a bit jarring (I still enjoyed the quests, but maybe it could have been somewhere else?) The chase sequences and the boss fights are unforgiving, if you die you have to start over. While I got a little angry when that happened to me, it should be said that it didn't take more than 4-5 attempts for me (chase or boss) before I managed to beat it.
I wouldn't consider it a dealbreaker, but if you are looking for a "cosy game", it's not that. But I sort of enjoyed the vibe of "this is a cosy game! Actually there's a murderer and your children are in danger!" It was a pleasant switch-up and twist for me.

Running through the painted countyside was probably the highlight of the game for me, and the style was overall really refreshing.
As other reviews have said, the game is lacking in gameplay and the underground sequences felt more like a chore than fun. Which basically sums up my experience with the game: I felt like this game was just one Act of being forced towards the goal, a grind which ultimately made the game feel unrewarding.

Scarlet Deer Inn offers a traditional dark fairytale. It was an interesting story and I wanted to keep playing to find out more. The art style is absolutely beautiful and having the animations based off of embroidered frames is incredibly unique. I found the gameplay mechanics to be incredibly smooth.
However, the game is essentially a puzzle platformer. With that, as a lot of other reviewers mentioned, the platforming sequences became quite frustrating as it was more of trial and error and requires you to have a perfect run. If you failed, you would have to start the entire sequence over again - it's not necessarily a bad thing, but it happens rather frequently. Additionally, there was an end "boss" battle with three phases, if you were hit once, you had to restart the entire thing over. There was no leniency. .
Since the majority of the game took place underground, with confusing paths, I would have liked to have seen a map introduced. Especially since there were collectibles you could find. Toward the end, it became rather confusing on which paths I had already taken and which paths were new. The last thing I would suggest is to have a quest tracker. I realize that if you open your inventory and hover over the items, you can see what needs to be done with them. But honestly, I didn't know who I was looking for half of the time. Someone from my playthrough is still missing their pie piece.

I got stuck at one point but it lasted like 5 minutes, I enjoyed the puzzle aspect of it. There is back tracking but I really didn't think it was a big deal, I thought that was the point of everything. The music was also fun, I liked chasing the little guys around I thought they were cute.
