I purchased this primarily so I could use the mobile app easier which, credit where it belongs, does work. Ever since the ad integration on AID Free, this is a better alternative. However. This is not worth the $30 the cost will eventually be. I understand that the costs for hosting a product as complex as AID, but the limited features you actually get from this purchase are not worth $30.

1: It is NOT add free, you will still be watching adds and getting pop-ups. It is simply click to close, no 5 second timer or anything. But you still get adds.
2: The AI you get, is the downright WORST. Barely, and I do mean barely usable. Possibly unusable for someone that hasn't messed with AI dungeon before. (you also cant upgrade on this app. You literally have to go to their website to do so. And even then there is little to no way to customize said upgrade without... again, going to the website)
3: The app is slow, and I mean slow. Mcdonald Wi-fi on their Ai's slowest bot, while using chrome is usually faster than this app while hardlined to your internet. Its depressingly garbage
4: There is ZERO difference between this, and the free web version. Absolutely zero. As much as I hate saying this. Buying even the silver tier for the AI on the web version is better than this.. Plus, you dont pay 30$ for this waste of computer space.
5: you CAN get banned, for things the AI writes. You might not even have wanted it to do so. But the ai always has a chance of writing something so horrific or code breaking, you will get your account banned... Aka, if you link it to steam, thats a perma-ban.. Killing your ability to use this app COMPLETELY. Why? Oh- The AI got a little crazy on a whim.
6: This FREE web app, costs 30$.... let that settle in, 30$ for something that is free. No upgrades, still the worst ai, still adds.. 30$... You can buy their platinum plan (dunno why you'd do that) for that much, and get better results on the web.
ultimately, the only pro I see of this on steam, is the fact you can properly see your playtime on your profile.

Even if an ad is a simple click to remove, it's still annoying, it's still generating more money for the company, and it's still a lie that you guys advertise the game as "ad free". I can understand the high price point to an extent (AI licenses are pricy after all), but everything else I've seem leaves little to be desired. Now, you can't even remove ads? Why.
I'm not sure if I just missed it the first few times I booted it up or if you guys waited two weeks to add the ads back in so that steam users could not refund it, but it certainly is a scumbag move to keep ads in an "ad free" game.
This purchase is only worth it to someone who is okay playing on the free language model but wants to play the game 24/7. Even with that, I would tell you to try a different alternative to AI Dungeon or to at least wait for a massive sale because this isn't worth it. I can only hope that my refund goes through in time, but I suspect it will not.

Just kinda pushed me over the edge, especially with everything else that's happened. I liked the game in the beginning and still do now—though substantially less—but, really?! Hopefully this isn't just the devs trying to test how many ads they can stack before people get angry and this ad situation evolves into something more ludicrous.
EDIT: They've removed the ads on the Steam version, so that's great. That said, this game still has a long way to go before I can confidently give it a positive review. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tthis had real enjoyable sci-fi and fantasy prompts for pseudo dungeons and dragons campaigns on your own at first but now its a complete waste of money my money since theyve gone free to play. instead of the permanent benefits that were MUCH better than what we have now, us schmucks who actually supported the game got handed a temp subscription to the premium features that we had already paid for permanent access to with a "whoops! haha sorry we caught you off guard :)" response. blatantly anti-consumer business practice and a company that does not care about you and just wants to milk as much money from you as possible. these "traveler tier" perks I get of "advanced options" (which dont work), "longer memory" (makes no difference) and "faster griffin" (no speed increase. this is the free to play model) are worthless since theyre worth only $10 compared to the $30 i spent. and the $30 gift of two months (which i didnt full enjoy since jan/feb arent a full 2 months, so my free benefits ended last week when i started on jan 1st) of the service we SHOULD have gotten.
dont give this company your time or money for anything because theyll only stab you in the back and screw you over.

You do not have to continuously spam "watch ad" to pay for responses, you can write world information freely, and you can alter "randomness" and "length" of responses.
However, I cannot say that I've had an "ad free" experience. I get continuous, unable-to-be-removed banner ads on the app I paid nearly thirty dollars to not get ads on. When I opened it up, I found myself slack-jawed in surprise and offense.
As well as that, I learn that I could have instead paid the same amount of money on their tiers, to get unlimited access to their other AI models. Paying 29.99 on this desktop app that still bugs me with ads, only allows access to their smallest, least advanced model, with still limited creativity.... as opposed to 29.99 for their "Legend" tier that provides Unlimited Dragon and Wyvern AI (Provided you're willing to dish out 29.99 a month)... even though it's abundantly clear that everybody would prefer to use Dragon to the other models.
And, of course, I am still bugged to join their subscription services. They show off in some settings that you can "change models" and of course when you poke at it, you are bugged to pay for a subscription. Did I not just pay 20+ to NOT have ads thrown at me? Regardless of the fact it's your own stuff you are advertising, it's still advertising.
Basically, what you pay for is a defanged version of their website, inside a "one website browser" akin to those apps you get on work computers for massive corporations, which still can give you banner ads, still promote their subscription service, which occasionally forgets that you paid for unlimited access at all. You do not get access to their "Hydra" options, not to Wyvern or Dragon, you get Griffon, with the only added benefit being barely a little more customization, and now you've blown 29.99 you could've used for a month-long affair with their best model. Lucky you.

Just to be clear, there was no actual need for them to do this, they implemented these restrictions for the sole purpose of winning clout on Twitter, and nearly destroyed their company in the process.
This is not an exaggeration, half of the already tiny Latitude dev team, including one of the founders, abandoned AID after implementing a horribly designed text filter that would automatically ban users for text that the AI itself could generate. That's right, you could get banned for something the AI posted. The community of AID was furious and, rather than take responsibility, the founder responsible for the disaster abandoned the game and removed the official status of the game's Discord server. Remaining devs later went on to create a new server (the one used today)where they could pretend nothing happened.
The filter that nearly destroyed AID still exists in the game today, the remaining developers never removed it like they should have, instead they simply changed it and continued promoting it. Why is a filter needed for TEXT?

On the 27th of April, 2021, Latitude implemented a new content moderation policy. As part of this policy, human moderators were allowed to access AI Dungeon (AID) stories that were considered PRIVATE by its users (imagine a diary company announcing they would be reading your diary). Although they have since reversed this policy due to widespread condemnation, that this decision was made at all shows the regard Latitude has for customers' privacy.
Ironically, Latitude did this even while they themselves had trained their AI with data that violated their own content policies, including child abuse, rape, and hate against minorities:

Although they have since retrained their AI services to exclude this content, this further demonstrates the hypocrisy which characterized the incident.
Shortly after this took place, Latitude allowed the company they were purchasing AI services from, OpenAI, to collect their users' private stories without any consent from those users. OpenAI subsequently sent these stories, which included DOXXABLE information, to a third-party: the crowdsourcing website Taskup. Taskup employees were free to view, screenshot, and even share these deeply personal stories however they pleased.
Due to the nature of the contract between OpenAI and Latitude, Latitude was unable to protect its users from OpenAI; OpenAI was thereby allowed to abuse the privacy of AID users and face zero repercussions.

I started playing around last year during the controversy and I enjoyed it very much, making several stories including one that is at 4k+ actions. Since the change of the AI it has been consistently poor quality (even with Dragon). I've only desperately been trying to hang on due to my existing stories I love so much but it's frustrating fighting with the AI to not get a repetitive and/or dumb response, having to constantly edit and retry and it's like what's the point? I enjoyed it because it did a lot of the writing and I felt more like I was playing a game before, now I have to write everything myself. I seriously hope it gets better but as of right now I would not recommend paying for this game. Play the free version if you must.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

A bunch of controversy some still haven't made mends with. They broke privacy and read non-published stories authors made for themselves. They decided to put strict filters on many buzzwords in order to not offend or be politically incorrect which in turn impacted the quality of the stories created. Then sometime in April of 2021, Latitude started cracking down on whatever they deemed to be wrong think. Latitude did this by taking down their search option. That also prevented me from publishing Scenarios & unpublished Scenarios that I wanted to edit.
When Latitude did bring back publishing in October of 2021, I published my 1st SFW Scenario named "Lunar Wars: A Light Moon Sider's Howl" for their #aidhalloween contest. Latitude rigged the contest for less than a handful of featured people. Most people who published Scenarios for that contest, including myself, weren't featured.
I did try to get myself featured when Latitude offered that to everyone after October. Still, they don't even want to feature my SFW Scenarios because of my mostly NSFW Scenarios.
I unsubscribed to AI Dungeon in March of 2022 when someone thought it was a bright idea to block me from putting NSFW tags on my NSFW Scenarios. Latitude undid that months later, but I'm not in the mood to re-subscribe.
I bought AI Dungeon on Steam to connect it to my account on Latitude's website. In other words, I've played AI Dungeon for more than 0.2 hours.
When a Russian got mad at Latitude on Discord for being discriminated against by advertisers, I used my own story as a hypothesis as to why Latitude shouldn't discriminate. Overly defensive people took my hypothesis as fact & started to attack a strawman version of me. They even created a separate thread that had nothing to do with what I typed.
Sometime after that, Latitude added the You See option to AI Dungeon, which broke how Grammarly used to work in the game.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAI Dungeon is definitely a unique footnote in the history of text-based adventures, its CYOA and simple accessibility straight out of the (text) box still a commendable point in comparison to its competitors. A tool that has always relied upon both the user and the AI's predictive generation bouncing off of one another to create truly engaging narratives.
...Or at least, that was its potential. AI Dungeon remains a pale imitation of its legacy from well over a year ago, before Latitude had to endure the opening of the floodgates due to a long line of PR disasters and disheartened users finally pushing the limits. The quality of the AI's predictability and its understanding of the tokens you parse remain questionable - but still passable - due to newly finetuned models and other explorative tinkering. Ads litter the free platform as a replacement of the energy system; while it was what the the community had technically asked for through the feedback site, there is still plenty of development required in order for the system to be user-intuitive (especially if you're on desktop) and the piecemeal approach to ensuring it works is slow and scattered. A good overarching comparison to encapsulate the development of AI Dungeon.
I don't want to disparage this platform because technically it has its merits still to this day, even if the edges have become a little dull along the way. Yet after spending so long as part of the community - after making friends with people who work for Latitude, after hearing their stories of how things are ran and what they wanted to achieve...I'm not really sure if the developers have really thought about what they want out of it. What kind of community they wish to harbor, and how they intend to nurture their relations. Even now there was the steam discussion thread opening up old wounds and blaming criticisms on ill-intentioned users, and while there may have been some inkling of truth to the initial attacks on the company and Discord when the drama began (which they went and hid in a hole meekly leaving their unpaid moderators to deal with)...those people have moved on. Many have. It's the people who care who are still critical to this day; the people who were hurt due to deception, unjust accusations and a product changing in ways they never expected. A company that holds a grudge against the boogeyman and can't move on from it and focus on a new future. A company that had viable candidates for PR relations and yet squanders their potential. A company that disappears off into their zone of radio silence when the criticisms come flying in, poking their head out of the dirt when the dust is settled and acting as if very little happened.
Maybe they'll figure things out eventually, but as it stands right now I can't recommend AI Dungeon. I do wish the people who work at Latitude the best despite how hostile that seemed - there are some great folks who work there and I don't want to irreparably damage my own reputation with anyone involved.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The first issue I noticed is when the A.I seemed to be having errors, one of which was repeating it'self no matter the input, and the other was infinite loading, with me needing to exit the story and start a new one.
The game/A.I is fun when it did work, which was maybe 50% of my one hour. Most of my 1 hour was spent trying to log in and get the A.I to work.
Speaking of logging in, you never really get to.
You link your account with steam, but you are only allowed to play for about 20 to 30 "rounds" or inputs before you are asked to log into a account in which you are not allowed to create a new account or use your steam account. The former then saying you don't own the game.
I bought this game because I didn't want to believe the reviews but it seems my experience was worse then I could ever expect, regardless of the past controversy the A.I seems to be far lesser and have more issues then the website free version over 2 years ago.
I suggest you don't buy, but if you have a hard time believing it has all these big problems like I did, go ahead and play it for yourself, but make sure you only play for an hour, because you will want a refund. I am sending a refund request myself.
