\n\t\t\t\t\tCyberpunk 2077 is my favorite game of all time, and I have over 1,000 hours in it.

Ever since I first started playing Cyberpunk 2077, I dreamed of living in a place like Night City — not just visiting it, but actually living there, working, making friends, having a job, and experiencing everyday life in a cyberpunk world.

When I first heard about Nivalis Nights and read the first news about it, I was incredibly excited because it felt like a dream I had been waiting for years to finally become a reality.

And now that I'm finally playing it, I'm enjoying every single second of it. I'm completely in love with the atmosphere and the world of this game.

I really hope the developers continue to support Nivalis Nights with plenty of updates and new content, because I would love to spend many more hours living in this world.

This is exactly the kind of cyberpunk game I have been waiting for.

The performance kills it for me. idk.. At least there could be framegen or something, but the options are very limited. The game looks like it should run fine (no offense, i really like the style) but FPS dropping so much with many NPCs around that it becomes unenjoyable.

I suggest waiting if you are interested.. because there is a good game there.. hopefully it can get some better optimization

(on the other hand its a mystery to me how this even happens.. I know gamedev is really hard BUT if you look at the marked and i were about to sell a game.. i would double or tripple check that it runs fine with soooo many performance issues games lately.

\n\t\t\t\t\tMassively enjoying this so far. What I thought was going to be a simple slice of life cyberpunk restaurant sim has so much more depth to it. Few little things here and there, such as restocking the noodle stand the first time won't complete unless you buy extra ingredients because your cook is using ingredients while you shop, but overall nothing so far that has stopped me from wanting to get lost in this world. It's really scratched that Cyberpunk itch.

I have not had any performance issues.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI think the downvotes for performance are a little unfair and so I felt obliged to leave a positive review - will update it later when I've played more.

Performance could be better sure, and I appreciate that'll be different for everyone (*I'm not on a mad rig, I'm currently on a Legion 5 Pro...) - but for me personally it wasn't a major issue and definitely not worth a downvote at launch, which can really hurt how well games do. Which isn't what you want to see with a game that seems to have real character and depth and is made by a smaller team. This isn't like a AAA giant are bombing at launch on a $80+ title, people would do well to keep that in mind imo.

The world feels immersive, great narrative, visuals, voice acting and audio generally, seems to have a decent amount of depth in terms of mechanics/gameplay systems as well from what I've experienced so far.

Thoroughly enjoyed the first session and I'd be surprised if performance wasn't improved upon, which will be appreciated of course, but hasn't impacted my experience at all.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tTLDR: It is my opinion this game is bad, even past the performance issues and I have refunded. It is no where near the quality of Cloudpunk in any regard. It is tedious, boring, badly written, visually inconsistent etc. please read on to see my vaguely coherent ramblings of why my most anticipated game of the year has disappointed me immeasurably.

Oh boy - I was a huge fan of Cloudpunk and I was really really excited for this, Cleared my schedule and about 90 mins in I'm calling it.

PERFORMANCE
Surprisingly my mid range PC did run this game, not well but it's clear at this point the game is very poorly optimised, other people with much more powerful PC's are having major issues with it and there already seems to be a lot of people refunding.

VISUALS
I was never a big fan of Cloudpunk's "Voxel" art style but I found that it worked well anyway because they committed to it and while driving it blurred nicely into the cityscape. Cloudpunk was beautiful and it one of the only games I've played to date that managed to capture not only the scale of a large city like nivalis but the skyscrapers within, Cloudpunk made me feel miniscule and it mostly made sense. Nivalis Nights has the most inconsistent artsyle of a game I've seen in a long time, environments like floor and walls are "pixel art" but at quite a high resolution yet things like stalls and items within them are extremely blocky which makes everything look very inconsistent, making matters worse are the character models which are smooth "Unity asset" style and very poorly animated. The whole game just looks cobbled together and it's genuinely so disappointing. Cloudpunk wasn't the best looking game but it was all at least consistent.

SOUND DESIGN
There seems to be very little in the way of sound design, Characters appear to talk in the background but that can't be heard. The voice acting is ROUGH, Cloudpunk's voice acting was never super high quality but Rania was believable as a person and the over the top voices usually matched the characters, this isn't the case here.

GAME MECHANICS + UI
Again, Cloudpunk wasn't perfect in this regard but it had a fun and consistent gameplay loop, the UI wasn't always great but it was very manageable. The majority of my gameplay in Nivalis Nights has been scrolling through endless menu's to restock and walking slowly. Above almost all my other criticism (Bar the awful writing) the most important bit is that this game is SO BORING, like beyond eye wateringly boring, I want to skip all the dialogue because it's so boring but that only gets me to the gameplay which is more boring still.

There is a sprint button but on controller you have to hold the left stick down the whole time you're sprinting rather than pushing once.
The UI of the whole game is atrocious, bordering on unplayable, If a majority of your game is going to be navigating menus it has to be streamlined, but this is slow and inconsistent in so many ways.
When Ava speaks to you often it stops you in your tracks, but sometimes it doesn't.
Sometimes you press A to move something in a menu, sometimes you press right on the d-pad, sometimes you need to navigate to a "move" button.
Food seems to go bad quicker than suggested when buying it.
It feels like there are no consequences to my actions, first thing I did when I hit curfew was get spotted on purpose...just a message that corpsec will be watching me....okay, then a fine the next day, the game couldn't even be arsed to spawn in a character to give me the fine.
The game is in desperate need of more tutorials and more context for who you are and what you're supposed to be doing.
Cloudpunk worked really well with a waypoint system because you're a driver navigating a giant city and inherently a lot of it looks similar, why when you're working with smaller separated maps you wouldn't put a ton of effort into making them navigable by visuals and do away with the way points in favour of Landmarks and exploration I have no idea. What I do know is that everything looks exactly the same so it's impossible to get around without the way point.

WRITING + WORLD BUILDING
This is the bit that really got me, Cloudpunk was thoughtful, thought provoking, often funny and felt ahead of it's time in many ways (as a cyberpunk game should), the world felt alive and most of the characters felt well written even if they were a little tongue in cheek, it made total sense why you would pivot to "life sim" after that. I cannot fathom that this game was written by the same people.

You're dropped into the game, who am i? no idea. Where are you? no idea. there's an AI talking to you explaining things you should already know considering you woke up in your own apartment, then she ham fists a line about a serial killer in, feels outside of the tone of cloudpunk but this is a new game after all. surprise this person has gifted you a ramen stall, who is he? no idea. Do you work at the stall? Not really, you just restock and tell people what to do. Cloudpunk had this awesome "cog in the machine" feeling, in a comforting way not unlike citizen sleeper, this game seems determined to not repeat that, despite putting all the pieces in place.
not one of these characters feel real, I think partially because you're just walking up and talking to them, where as in Cloudpunk they have an implicit reason to be talking to you. But the main reason is because the writing is bad, not just fake feeling but downright nonsensical to the point me and my friend were wondering if some of it was written via AI.
There are "moral" choices written in here and there but they tend to boil down to "listen to person" OR "Treat person like ♥♥♥♥" they are cartoonish and therefore not endearing at all.
It feels really weird that the "low end" greengrocers and butchers have such a wealth of ingredients considering the world building in cloudpunk. in fact it feels weird there would be "greengrocers" and "butchers" at all considering they're now a luxury let alone in the future, where are they getting chicken? duck?
Why do I get random recipes from people I solve non food related problems for?
Why do I have an apartment in the market? it's not even explained if it *is* my apartment, it could just be *an* apartment from what I can tell.
I don't even think I can explain this one, there's a decided shift in the writing to more "shocking" adult puns etc. Cloudpunk was always somewhat mature with the subject matter but one of the earliest missions is "suck it and see", there's a character from a band called "spit or swallow" and another that brags about being mean to corporate execs at a goth club for money and all of it has this tone of "wow you should be shocked about this" it's just plain bad writing.

CONCLUSION
I haven't been this disappointed by a game in a good 5 or so years, it's everything that Cloudpunk wasn't in the worst way and i'm sad that this is what will become of Nivalis. It looks bad, it sounds bad and it's badly written. It feels really weird to call this a life sim, I would accept restaurant sim but so far it feels like try to find ramen at the bottom of the greengrocer menu sim. I don't know how these guys managed to stray so far from their previous entry. it's like they released this game with 0 feedback from anyone.\t\t\t\t\t

And rougher to review. Especially because I was genuinely looking forward to it, massively so. Ever since it was announced, I would check its Steam page constantly and everytime they would push back the release date it would hurt me. Because of that I am in a very weird position.

Let's start with some hard facts. As mentioned by a lot of people, performance is not great. Now typically I roll my eyes at early performance complainers, especially when they complain about ultra high settings not working on their high end computers.
In this case however, yes, the performance is a very noticeable problem, and due to the game being very visually cluttered, low frame-rates can cause, not really "motion sickness" but definitely along those lines. I played for about 7 hours at the time of this review, and during those moments of low frame rate my eyes started to hurt.

Second fact, the world is definitely captivating, I genuinely did not notice those 7 hours go by... however, I'm not exactly sure if that's a good thing.

Here's where I get into the nitty gritty... Nivalis, from what I've played so far, is not a great game. It's a very beautiful digital space to explore, and yes, though I hate this line of thinking and I'll get into it later, the "vibes" are immersive, captivating, put whatever buzzword you want.

But that's not a game. The game side of Nivalis is undercooked to say the least. To put it plainly, the game isn't fun. Managing your restaurant, isn't fun. Decorating, isn't fun. Fishing, isn't fun. The RPG-like story, isn't fun, hell I have a lot of things to say about the story later.

The problem is that this game feels like this game was created moreso to please the people who look for "vibes". People who don't care that what they're doing is mind numbingly boring, because they like just turning off their brains and getting lost in the world. I don't consider that to be a good game.

The game design just... confuses me. The game tells you, you can "use inspiration" for dishes, or add ingredients to dishes to make them unique, but it doesn't tell you how, hell I have a feeling that's a throwaway line from the dialogue.

You can play one of the most basic and bland restaurant owner sim ever, or attempt to automate it with workers and managers, which also is pretty unclear because even though I am getting good reviews, managing my workers well, I still end up losing money if I leave the workers to run the store without me.

Working in your restaurant is just rough. It feels like a tech demo. The animations are janky yet stiff. Cleaning dishes requires you to pick up one dirty item at a time and bring it to the sink. It just feels cheap. I don't know how to describe it better than that. It literally feels like it was tacked on. A last minute inclusion into a totally different game.

Fishing requires you to follow a sonar to fishing points, or places you can get treasure. Though a lot of the time you're unsure what you're doing wrong. For example. I fish in a holographic circle that has a fishing rod icon above it... I get nothing. I fish right outside the circle, I start getting bites?

Decorating. Bruh. Don't make a decorating feature in a game without the option to snap items to a grid. It's such a basic thing to leave out. Not to mention, again, there is no indication of whether or not you're doing good or bad. I had a story NPC threatening me because my tables suck apparently. But did he tell me, why, what I can do better? WHICH OF THE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ TABLES? Because spoiler alert, there are different styles of tables, and I had 2 styles at that moment.

Nothing. No bar, no banner next to your restaurant name telling you if it's pretty or ugly, or what style it's considered. You know, like in other games? You may even ask me "Are those even mechanics in the game?". I HAVE NO CLUE. You tell me why the furniture has tags like "Art Deco" or what type of tables that NPC wanted.

Here's the thing about me. When I start a life-sim game, I like to explore around looking for all the things I can do. I like to know what activities I can take part in, so I can find one I like and focus on it. Nivalis, doesn't have that. It's bare bones. The game mechanics are shallow and never have that hook that grabs your attention like "YES, this action is satisfying and rewarding, I want to do this."

Think of Stardew Valley, in it, you can farm, that's the basic thing, but if you don't like that, you can go into the cave and fight monsters, you can fish, you can work your way to animals and start that, or you can focus on getting closer to villagers. Here's the thing, all those actions feel satisfying, they feel like there's a point, a merit for investing time in them. I don't feel that from Nivalis. Not yet at least. But if the hook is so deep into the game that even after 7 hours of me playing, I haven't found it, then that's bad design.

Speaking of bad design, the world, Jesus christ. Look, it's pretty to look at, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ me, it's a ♥♥♥♥♥ to navigate sometimes. Doesn't help that if you talk to as many NPCs as you can, like I do, you start getting a load of quests, problem is, you can't turn off the quest markers, or select which quests you have active. So half your screen is covered by a list of quests that goes from the top of your screen to the bottom, and the rest is cluttered in icons. Making finding your desired quest location a ♥♥♥♥♥ to find.

Finally, let's get to the thing I am the most mixed on. The story and characters. Let's start with, I despise Cyberpunk 2077 and the CDPR fanboys who parade it like it's the next coming of christ. CP2077 does not have a good story, and one of it's biggest weaknesses is its characters. An issue this game shares.

Almost everyone you meet for lack of a better term is an A-hole. I don't understand this obsession with writing people that are just such ♥♥♥♥♥ to you, and expecting you to put up with it and help them, with hopes that they start being nicer. That's not good writing, nor is it "quirky", that's an abusive relationship. And if you are going to try telling me that "that's realistic" then you genuinely need to get out more and meet better people.

This problem also extends to your character. Your nameless protagonist has the option to be a business obsessed douchebag, a whiney ♥♥♥♥♥, or a nihilist. Why is it so rare for a character to just BE NORMAL. I swear, half the time he just sounds like one of those spineless henchmen archetypes you see in cartoons, like Starscream, the type to act like a little ♥♥♥♥♥, only to stab you in the back. How am I supposed to relate to a character like that. Why do writers have this antagonistic view on player characters.

The only character that you end up actually caring about is Ava, your AI companion. She is genuinely the best part of the game, even though the cynic side of me wants to say "she's programmed to be nice to you". But genuinely, so far, she's the only character that I care about and actually want to be friends with. I typically am the type of guy who avoids mean responses in RPGs, and trys to help and be friends with everyone, but honestly I'm starting to go down the douchebag route cause ♥♥♥♥ these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Story focused RPGs NEED good characters. Final Fantasy 7, you CARE about Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, Barret and the rest of your party. You need that connection, otherwise what's the point?

I want to like this game. No, lemme rephrase. I really, REALLY, want to like this game. But again, this isn't a game at this point. It's a pretty simulation with some really bad mini-games attached to it. It's shallow. And while I can see all the passion put into the world and the art direction. The game part clearly suffered for it.

I don't know what to hope for in this case. Sadly, there's a lot of what I consider toxic positivity from the "vibes" crowd. And all of the criticism is focused on the performance and not the game design.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI’ve only been playing for just under an hour, but so far it’s exactly what they said it was going to be and that’s a great thing.

The visuals are amazing, the cyberpunk atmosphere is spot on and the whole idea of being given your own little noodle bar to look after just works. It’s incredibly chill and relaxing and I can already see myself sinking a ridiculous number of hours into this.

I was really looking forward to the release and so far it’s been well worth the wait. Brilliant game, great atmosphere, and exactly the kind of experience I was hoping for.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI really don't understand what's up with all of the negative reviews solely complaining about the game's performance, and genuinely nothing else. Does my game get pretty choppy when looking in the direction of more visually populated areas? Yeah, definitely does. Does that make me want to ignore everything else that this game does and all of the charm it has, and leave a negative review just because of that? Absolutely not.

I'm not that far into the game yet, and to keep it short, I'm definitely enjoying myself. The characters are charming and I always enjoy a relationship / standing system in dialogue given games. The management sim part of the game is a little difficult for me, as it's a genre I'm not as skilled with, but I'm still having fun and find myself wanting to engage with some of the more niche dialogue littered around the game. Oh, and you've basically got a woman speaking into your ear like she's on an ASMR stream at all times with useful information, so that's a plus?

Overall if I were to give this game a 1-10 rating for its current state and how I'm enjoying the game after playing a few hours, I'd give it a solid 7.6/10. My primary complains / wishes are that much of the less traveled areas can look very basic and hard-edged, which isn't necessarily bad, but it can make it very visually distinct where you're meant to be looking around and where you aren't. I would, of course, love to see the devs improve the performance and reduce the level of consistent choppiness while playing. At the very least, I haven't experienced any frame spikes or performance loss that isn't scheduled to happen at this point, seeing as how I'm getting more used to it and can tell you more often where you'll experience it worse.

With some polish and performance fixes, I could easily see myself giving this game an easy 8/10+, and I hope to see it reach that point one day.\t\t\t\t\t

I'm probably one of the only people with this problem but I can't stand the voice of your assistant you get. I have misophonia, and I can hear all the little smacks in her mouth as she talks. It's disgusting. Had to turn off her voice because I can't unhear it now. I'm sorry if I just ruined it for you but this is your warning if those noises trigger you. Great game though lol

But right now, as it stands, this game is frustrating to play. Like it actively seems like the game punishes you for doing anything. It floods you with a ton of quests constantly, demands upgrading after upgrading, which is rough at start because you barely make any kind of profit, even with just two employees.

The game looks visually amazing. But you're not allowed to explore unless you're willing to suffer a bunch of broken game mechanics that do not play well together. The biggest issue, I'd say, being how busted Managers are. They're supposed to help run the day to day operation so you can go out and do other things. AVA even explains this very early on. But, they literally drive your business to the ground so fast, it's better you don't hire one and just micromanage your inventory by hand, yourself.

Many other issues as well, like your cooks using fresh ingredients over the ingredients that are about to expire. Then you get left with inventory stuffed with rotted food which (so far as I've played) you can't get rid of, just moved from your restaurants shelves to your player inventory. So it sits in your inventory forever. I'm sure eventually you find someone who buys the junk you end up amassing, but rotting food really shouldn't even be happening as regularly as it does, if the cooks were to use a FIFO method.

And just managing your shop... the game progresses so quickly in the beginning that you get overwhelmed so fast. The first menu unlock is a dessert. But before you can make the dessert you need to buy a blender. And if you haven't been perfect about your finances, there's no shot you can afford even that. Then everything snowballs from there... need more tables for more customers, need more staff for the business, but you're barely scraping by on profits. Heaven forbid you hire a Manager to help out, because like I mentioned at the start- those specific "employees" tank your business to the grave before the first half of the game week is even finished.

Finally, the game floods you with people to interact with. But in doing so, your often given a task on top of all the other things you have to stay on top of. And that's not really my main problem with the interactions. The game barely explains what the icons above the dialog mean... Or even how they work... I'd gain a... I guess a green "friendship" point during a conversation? But then the next day, that persons "friendship" reverts back to Zero. sooo... why did I even gain that point? What does it even do? Why was it reset? The game doesn't explain. The other colors sometimes do the same, but then also... sometimes not??? But also aside from the seemingly obvious red heart "romantic" stat, I have no idea what the lightning even means, and I guess the blue suitcase is some sort of... business relationship? But again, no explanation. Ava briefly just glosses over the concept, at the start, but that's it. You're told to make connections, and then I guess tasked with figuring the rest out on your own.

And I think that's my biggest take-away from playing, so far. It's an immersive 'lifesim' business management game that just overfloods you with useless information at the beginning, and then leaves you to figure out what everything means or why it's even important, throwing you into the sharks tank expecting you to race while calling it 'relaxing'.

Edit: Noticed I didn't reference the issue people have with performance. As far as that goes... the game runs fine with my expectations. But, that's probably a low bar. I have a pretty old system, and don't have all the options turned up. It hitches occasionally, but for the most part has no problem hovering around 60 FPS.\t\t\t\t\t

It seems like a good premise but needs a little more love, both on the performance but also on the introduction to the story and such. You are bombarded immediately with things, and much follow specific go-to's instead of just marvelling at the fact you are in a fully realised cool a*s cyberpunk city.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game seems really cool unfortunately in the second area of the game (where I assume I will be spending a lot of time considering its where they've placed the shop) my computer drops to 45 frames per second depending on where I'm looking

Now I'm not saying my computer is the best on the market but its a pretty beefy rig especially considering I'm playing at 1080p

I'm sure the devs worked really hard on this game but it feels like a huge oversight to leave out an option for DLSS or FSR or any kind of substitute for the performance while the devs work out the performance kinks in the mean time

I cant imagine how bad it gets running it on older hardware so if you're running an older rig maybe skip this one at least until the devs give you some kind of notice that they're aware how awful the performance is in the mean time I think im going to refund the game myself
