\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI hate to give this game a negative review as I honestly really like the core concept. I mean its huge machine beasts and collecting loot in a desert, thats awesome. Sadly though the experience has been ruined for me because of the issues the devs seem unable to fix. I know lots of people are reporting cheaters but I write this review not even about them. The matchmaking system is broken. I played it since launch and even in multiple playtests and since launch there has been considerable issues but the worst for me personally is definitely getting team players in solo games. I have had this exact scenario happen many times where I would loot for 20 or 30 minutes in the storm mode and some times even longer, make my way to the exit only to be greeted by tramplers with 3 man teams who just demolish me, leaving me with no loot. This happened repeatedly effectively making me waste my hours of time spent playing. Having died to circumstance that should not be possible is annoying. I took a break for a while only to come back and suprise. I was chased down by two tramplers in solo who were actively working together. Destroyed my trampler. I had remembered reading that they were activating trampler capture again, so i thought "okay this isnt over, im going to take over one of theirs" I killed them as they tried to loot my trampler and did get to the captains quarters. Only to find it was not possible. I then died to them, losing all my progress to unfixed matchmaking bugs..again. Sadly this issue is game ruining for me and because of this I must leave a negative review.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

On top of that if you have not been playing since day one or unless you have nothing better to do in life you will do nothing but struggle to ever progress. As the game has a tiered system on what you can put on your crawler the more gear you get the better you can build. Although it will spawn the worst un geared crawler in the same matches as the ultra tier crawler. Then on top of it the game rewards these walkers to murder you on sight as they need your black-box so they can continue through the game. The least thought out tier system ever seen in a video game. There is no downsides to the big crawlers smoking you constantly and taking what little bit of gear you have. Most of the time they wont even loot the gear you've been painstakingly trying to get all they want is the little box for killing you and couldn't care about the rest of it.
I highly recommend this game if you're a masochist or a streamer with nothing better to do in life. For anyone working a 9-5 good luck its not as fun as it seams online. The player base will be dead in 3 months because of this. Sucks to see what could of been a great and fun game with a unique idea ruined by their horribly thought out progression system/matchmaking.
To the Devs, All you would have to do if you don't want to limit matchmaking due to server capacities etc, is make it so you can only gain black boxes from killing the same chassis or higher level then you. That would discourage the giants from hunting the tiny crawlers. Or you can make the giants move at a much slower rate but as the game stands right now they can move faster than my basic crawler so all you can do is bend over and apply the lube before they get to you so hopefully it hurts less.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The game is plagued by people gaming the system - solo mode is unplayable, 100% of games are filled with groups of people in discord with their friends queueing up at the same time to have an impossible advantage over solo players.
Teams is the same thing - in the 3man queue they'll queue up with atleast another group of 3 to ensure a whole team advantage over others in the lobby.
Large teams (4-6 players) will do the same thing in large coordinated discords in which they literally own over half the lobby space (up to 7 teams total) and will completely dominate the map.

and if its not teamers you lose to it will be players using bugs or exploits or straight up cheats ruining your matchs aim bots teleporters everything you can think of and more.

The foundation here is beautiful—an atmospheric, post-apocalyptic steampunk concept that captures the exact same structural vibe as Sea of Thieves, but on land. I genuinely want this game to succeed. I’ve experienced glimpses of how incredible it can be, like pulling off a 37,000-crown solo extraction or calling a temporary truce with an enemy player in a ruined city just to have a friendly conversation.
Unfortunately, those rewarding moments are extremely rare. I am primarily a PvE-focused player who can tolerate a balanced PvPvE environment if executed well. However, SAND has fundamentally drifted from its advertised design, turning the daily loop into a frustrating nightmare for solos and groups alike.
The core structural flaws making the game unplayable include:
• The Abandoned PvPvE Vision: The game was showcased as a balanced PvPvE experience centered on exploration and scavenging. Instead, the PvE ecosystem has collapsed into a hyper-aggressive pure PvP meatgrinder. Coordinated veteran squads routinely camp extraction zones or chase smaller crews completely off the map boundaries. Tellingly, the Steam store page itself has quietly shifted its branding and is now labeled strictly as a PvP game. The original vision has been abandoned.
• Broken Matchmaking & The Ram Meta: There is currently zero gear-based or skill-based matchmaking. In Small Crew queues, our 3-person mid-tier crew is consistently thrown into lobbies against end-game squads wielding Rail Cannons and energy shields. When fights get close, the vehicle-ramming meta takes over. Attacking Tramplers use the ram as an extra layer of impenetrable armor that instantly shatters your critical compartments and disorients your screen, leaving mathematically zero chance for counterplay and deleting hours of real-life progress in seconds.
• Automated Anti-Cheat False Flags: This was the ultimate breaking point. While anti-cheat is necessary, the automated system is so poorly optimized that it hands out false flags to innocent players. After my character suffered three consecutive deaths due strictly to environmental map hazards, the system flagged my account for "suspicious activity." Penalizing players for standard environmental defeats completely destroys the incentive to progress or grind.
• Quantity vs. Quality Updates: The game has rushed out 7 rapid-fire updates in just two months, yet the foundational loops remain unpolished. For comparison, a game like Iron Nest has been out for the same duration under a tiny two-person team, and feels completely stable after only 3 updates. Pumping out patches means nothing if you aren't fixing the core economy. To address toxic end-game hoarding, the developers desperately need to implement monthly inventory wipes that flatten the gear gap while preserving hard-earned Tech Tree progression.
There are normal skill issues, and then there are unbreakable hard ceilings. Until the developers fix the automated system targeting innocent players, protect casual groups, and restore the promised PvPvE balance, I cannot recommend spending your time or money here. As this game stands right now, you're better off playing Sea of Thieves or something of the like.

The "known issues" block in patch notes becomes bigger and bigger with every single patch. Teamers issue don't fixed so far, even after "Over 1000 bans have been administered for confirmed pre-teaming" message from publisher's manager, every single run contains teamers and you have no chance to beat them. Streamers also teaming without even hiding it and continue to play.
With the last patch you can see that devs much more interested in "new" sprites for cannons than beating real problems.

But there are too many cheaters and too many losers who team up to create unplayable one sided fights. I dont give a ♥♥♥♥ if thats "part of the game" I cant even try to casually enjoy a game because a buncha sweats want to make it awful for anyone that doesnt have to time to grind for the same gear or find people to group up with.
Until this game has gear/skill based lobbies (currently doesnt even track stuff like trampler/player kills as far as i know) its not worth trying to get into unless you love a blind grind and getting curb stomped.

Unfortunately, at least with the current state of the game, this game is not worth playing.
As of 8/2/2026 there have been minimal changes to the balance or exploitation of this game's systems with updates being delayed repeatedly and communication being sporadic from the development team.
My Main issues currently are as follows:
-Gameplay imbalance: This for me is the one issue that will result in the death of this game. Currently there is no balancing in the matchmaking, meaning that new players will face players with hundreds of hours and gear well beyond their capability to match. Most matches I find myself against players with end of tech tree items and highest grade cannons and small arms, most items I have nothing of comparable quality to match, or ability to play around. This game exclusively rewards people who put in hundreds of hours in, to the detriment of all other players. You NEED to play this game as a full time job to have a chance to compete.
(Truly what am I supposed to do when I have a tier 2 trampler and I'm being chased by a tier 4 with seemingly infinite speed boost?)
-Cheating & exploiting: Much has been said about the teleporters, duplicators, and trampler thieves. I have only been a victim of obvious cheaters a couple times, but the system to enforce it is weak and ineffective, often kicking players when they experience an in game glitch. This has been present for a couple weeks as of writing
Final Summation: I think this game blew it's load too early, and and releasing in this state will ultimately lead to a large fall off of the player base. However, it is early access, and there's time for them to turn things around, but with the pace of updates and lack of communication by the dev team it will probably be a year or two before this game is worth touching. too much stuff in the game (reflector, shield, orbital strike, amplifier, engine shut off items, experimental cannons). a simple game with more focus on balance than disparity would have been better, but we are cursed with extraction game loot tiers and silly mechanics.

The idea is great, but the execution is so half baked at this point that the it feels like a chore to play. The glitches, exploits, and clunkiness of almost every mechanic makes it very apparent that there was not nearly enough testing before the devs launched early access. If you like the biggest learning curve in a game to be trying to get mechanics to work even remotely close to as advertised, then this is the game for you.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
