There is no appeal process, and I'm hardware banned. I had several people willing to advocate for me and screenshots to prove the mod banned me for a petty reason, and one of my friends got banned for defending me. They weren't being disrespectful or anything, they just submitted a ticket to have me unbanned and got banned themselves... Incredibly toxic to purge multiple loyal fans who were totally in compliance with the rules over the petty grievances of a mod in training. Also your game is incredibly buggy\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI've played SAND nearly every day since Early Access launched and have 500+ hours in it. I really want to recommend it. I just can't right now.

TL;DR: SAND's trampler combat can be fantastic, but the game is struggling to retain enough players for its core PvP to work reliably. A rebound to 16.4K players quickly fell back to roughly 5K-6K peaks, and those players are fragmented across as many as 72 matchmaking pools. Combined with persistent server, hit-registration, balance and cheating problems, I worry the population is declining faster than the developers can fix what's driving people away. For now, I'd wait.

GAME

The concept is great. The implementation is not.

SAND has something genuinely unique here. Building ridiculous tramplers with friends, hunting other crews, trading cannon fire, repairing while under fire, boarding the enemy ship and somehow dragging what's left back to extraction can be fantastic.

Gameplay / PvP

Trampler-to-trampler PvP is easily the best part of the game. It has balance problems, but that's normal Early Access stuff and isn't where most of my concern is.

The surrounding gameplay loop is much weaker. You loot, extract, grind the tech tree, improve your trampler and repeat. That works when it's building toward meaningful fights, but some progression is poorly thought out enough that rewards are basically obsolete by the time you unlock them.

Small-arms PvP is much rougher. Hit registration is a significant problem, especially when latency gets involved, and for some players it can make certain weapons nearly unusable. The shotgun is a great example: it's one of the strongest conventional weapons when it works, but hits can fail to register often enough that some people avoid using it altogether.

Then there are impact grenades. They're so far ahead of normal small-arms options that some players basically use them as their primary PvP weapon. They explode on impact, can be thrown far and fast, and can be spammed quickly enough to feel like they're coming out of a machine gun.

Population / Matchmaking

This is probably the biggest threat to SAND right now.

The fall from SAND's ~41.7K launch peak isn't what concerns me. Multiplayer games lose players after launch. What happened afterward is much harder to dismiss.

July still averaged roughly 14.9K concurrent players, but August fell to about 7.2K. SAND then rebounded as high as 16.4K, only to fall back to roughly 5K-6K daily peaks within about two weeks.

The game has shown that it can get a meaningful number of people to come back. It has not shown that it can keep them.

SAND also divides players across 9 regions, 2 game modes and 4 group sizes: 72 nominal matchmaking pools. The population obviously isn't divided evenly, but a 5,000-player Steam count translates into a much smaller pool for any particular queue.

I've waited 15+ minutes on US East during peak hours just to get one other team, sometimes not even a full one. I've joined Voyage as the only crew there. Even patch days, when you'd expect one of the strongest temporary rebounds, have still produced peak-hour lobbies that were effectively dead.

Low population also means newer players can end up against people with hundreds of hours, endgame equipment and heavily developed tramplers because there aren't enough players to separate everyone reliably.

The result is a feedback loop: population falls, matchmaking gets worse, more people leave, and matchmaking gets worse again.

Voyage Servers

The player list shows people who have been in the server, not necessarily who is still there. A server can look populated even though most left hours ago, and you may actually be there with one other crew or nobody at all.

Voyage also continues to suffer crashes that wipe session progress. You keep what you entered with, but anything earned during the session can disappear, and there's no way to know whether the server you just joined has hours left or is about to die.

Cheating / Enforcement

Some of the cheats SAND has been vulnerable to go well beyond the normal cat-and-mouse problem every PvP game has.

At one point, cheaters could remotely loot players and tramplers from across the server, effectively erasing hours of someone else's progress without even needing to fight them. I've personally dealt with fly/noclip exploits, trampler theft, remote looting and absurd amounts of duped orbital/EMP spam.

The devs DID eventually fix or mitigate most of the worst movement and remote-looting exploits, and they deserve credit for that. But cheating, especially duping, has repeatedly been handled reactively, with new methods becoming widespread before the team catches up. Reporting and enforcement have also felt too slow and reactive for a high-stakes PvP game.

Communication: Material gameplay changes have been left out of patch notes, while known issues, workarounds, development direction and upcoming changes are often buried in Discord pins, staff replies or normal English chat instead of somewhere obvious and maintained.



DISCORD / COMMUNITY

Normally I wouldn't include a game's Discord in a Steam review, but SAND relies on it heavily for LFG, community coordination, support, known issues, workarounds and a lot of the communication about where the game is going.

I've repeatedly seen vague or improvised directives, sarcasm, condescension and staff getting personally involved in arguments they should probably just be moderating. That can make ordinary disagreements unnecessarily adversarial, with staff contributing to the escalation and then largely treating the community member's reaction as the conduct problem.

I was eventually permanently banned after months of being heavily involved in discussions about the game and its problems. Whatever you think of that decision, the practical result is that I also lost access to SAND's main LFG/community ecosystem and a significant amount of practical game information that has accumulated inside Discord.

More concerning is that I'm not the only long-term player reaching this point. Some of the people who have held on through months of bugs, cheating and population decline are now simply deciding they've had enough and moving on. Community moderation doesn't explain SAND's population problem by itself, but unnecessarily alienating some of the remaining highly engaged players certainly doesn't help.

Important player tools and game information shouldn't depend this heavily on remaining in good standing with a Discord moderation team.



I've never thought chanting "dead game" or "dead servers" was useful. SAND isn't dead.

I bought an Early Access game. I don't care that it's unfinished. Balance, progression and bugs can all be fixed.

What worries me is whether the game can retain enough players for the developers to get that chance. It has already shown that thousands of people are willing to come back. It hasn't shown that it can keep them.

And this isn't just something I'm seeing in my own experience. A lot of SAND's current Most Helpful Steam reviews raise the same kinds of concerns: population and matchmaking, new-player mismatches, cheating, server problems, teaming, and frustration with the way the community is being managed.

For a game whose best feature depends on having enough other crews around to fight, that's a serious problem.

I genuinely worry SAND will lose the population it needs to work before the developers have time to fix the problems driving people away.

But it's hard to agree when you are constantly being beaten as a tier 2 trampler by tier 3 and 4 tramplers. After 170 hours I can't progress past tier 2, and 90% of the PVP battles I've lost because they have been against players that are better outfitted than I am.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI've got over 200 hours on this game. I really want to love this game. It's beautiful. You can tinker with your trampler to your hearts content. Looting is actually fun. Navigating the desert is cathartic. Fighting the AI is fun. Trampler fights can be fun.

Unfortunately, fighting humans generally sucks. Personal PvP is way op. Once you get boarded, you are screwed. Matchmaking sucks, the lobby's are full of maxed out players just looking to fight anyone, no matter if the fight is fun or not. Huge trampler vs newbie, sure, fun for one. No amount of skill can save you when you are out teched, out sized, out armored. Loosing is way too punishing.

Unless they make better PvE and perhaps segregate the PvP to specific servers, this game will die. As much as I'd like to, I would not recommend this game at the moment.\t\t\t\t\t

I decided in this week to play some solo games and I got bored immediatly to the fact that you wont find anyone else in the lobby, and I agree that the pvp is not the only content that this game offers, but I guess that was what I wanted to do in those sessions.
I also joined a game and saw that there were only 6 people in the game and decided to leave immediatly just before writing these review.

\n\t\t\t\t\tThis game is amazing and it breaks my heart that I can't recommend it to anyone right now. Cheaters, dupers and teamers have drained the game of any new blood, leaving veteran sweats who immediately destroy anyone trying to get back into it, leading to them leaving again, and that's assuming you can even get into a lobby with another crew in it. Despite there being gear based matchmaking, the pool of players is far too small and split for it to be noticeable, with highly geared teams often being in the same lobby as teams who bought the game a day ago (with those sometimes being the only 2 teams in the lobby lol), not to mention that those who exploited duplication bugs can just immediately destroy either crew using their exploited items. While the pvp is fun when you get to fight players of similar skill, the odds are simply stacked against you too often due to the low playerbase, meaning new players don't get to experience the parts of the game that are actually fun. More often than not, as a new player, you will spend 20-30 minutes walking around a desert, visiting cities and picking up loot, only to get pulled up on by someone who isn't within the zip code of your skill level, dying without learning anything and losing any progress you may have gotten. The whole situation with this game saddens me, since I was one of it's greatest supporters during early grievances, but as the problems piled up I simply could not use the early access excuse to justify all of this when the game is $30. Give the game another month or two in the oven at the very least and then maybe check back on it, that's what me and my friends are going to do anyways.\t\t\t\t\t

Play voyage to loot for tech tree with only 4 people on the server--get rolled up on by a trampler with tier 4 armor (when you have basically a grumpy/starter) while looting and lose the fight to a glitch. Great.

Bring out your big build. Get ganked by 2 solos with pristines teaming up in voyage.

I can't get friends to grind this game or join me in it. Really hoping Sand turns it around--maybe the new player experience wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't filled with always kill on sight blood thirsty fiends. It is DAMN shame, game had potential. what ruined this - is bugs and cheater issues.

Devs should've known that new PVP-PVE would attract nolife-PK-hordes form arc raiders bringing their toxicity, broken psycho behavior - and that would drain the player base that plays the game to relax and unwind after work.

Next issue - myriad of glitches, small if separated, but combined in chains and popping out every round - GRRRRRRR. in a game with full lose of loot on death, any bug or glitch loss angriness is multiplied by time wasted to get the lost gear. but you decided to stand behind screaming streams bunch.

I understand that you were experimenting with anti cheat and tried to deal with out of map players creating extra load on servers. And DDOS. OK, BUT - game needs GAMEPLAY. Gameplay made of only grind with a solid chance to loose everything is - FRUSTRATION, that leads to players moving to other projects, or games they played before.

Shrinking circle battle royal was new when Battlegrounds was a mod for Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (OFP) - long time ago. capturing the points or flags is as old as quake2 mp ctf, minimum. We need other ideas.

Settings was new and interesting, but other then that? What about on foot only on other map for people who lost everything? what about actually punishing those who turned a game to hell for everyone else? elements of game that FORCES people to cooperate? Gameplay that offers endgame that is more then "lets drive around shoot people on 3 trampers"? Dynamic bosses? Chance to get on a rare transport and storm some vault on a cargo station? Dungeons you should find on a map by searching for clues?

Must say here that I appreciate that you didn't fall to lets sell skins and introduce lootbox-casino mechanics from mobile-microtransaction-milking games.

FFS: Autoban for people who does massive unrealistic damage, moves to fast from point to point, or appears in places without opening doors? NO?

idk if its a bug with the new GBMM or just the game being dead. but match after match you get thrown into empty lobbies with max 2 other tramplers most the time. For a PvP extraction game, that just completely kills the point.
When you do find people, PvP has devolved into grenade spam rather than actual interesting fights. Everyone is stacking nades because they can two shot people, and you can dump an entire stack in under a second. Theres zero incentive to actually use guns or engage in proper PvP.
The bigger issue is how slow the game is actually being fixed, its filled with bugs that have been a known issue for weeks or some even months and instead of fixing, every new update just makes things worse. 2 examples, hit registration issues, and constant server crashes in voyage.
The dreadnought is also a good example, probably the only meaningful reason to play Storm Dive, since its the only place you can get experimental canons, it feels like it has a less than 5% chance to spawn atm. which is an insane design, the game already struggles with player number and you're forcing people to spend 40min in an empty stormdive for something that has an absurdly low spawn chance and is the only place you can get experimental canons.

And yes, the game is early access, and im not expecting a fully polished game, but early access cant be an excuse for the core gameplay becoming this frustrating. Devs should address the problems that are driving people away, before adding more on top of them. Right now it feels more like paying to beta test a game that desperately needs a healthy playerbase to function, than paying for early access

DON'T BUY IT RIGHT NOW.
Wait until the devs actually fix the fundamental problems, improve matchmaking/population, and give people a reason to keep playing.

After alot of hours, I can honestly say that Raiders of Sophie is an incredibly fun game.

There’s something almost addictive about sneaking around solo, trying to stay unnoticed while filling your pockets with loot. At the same time, jumping in with a larger group and taking bigger risks can be an absolute blast. The core gameplay loop has a lot going for it.

Unfortunately, over those hours, I’ve experienced more frustration than a real sense of progression or accomplishment.

Losing your trampler and effectively “losing everything” is obviously part of the game. I understand that this is fundamentally a fight-or-flight, high-risk/high-reward experience. But losing that progress to cheaters, hackers, or simply extremely aggressive players feels very different from losing a fair fight.

For me, the bigger issue is that there currently isn’t enough reward or breathing room for casual players.

I’ve found myself logging in late at night or ridiculously early in the morning just hoping to get a quiet solo run where I can farm some materials and make progress without immediately having to fight for everything I’ve collected. When avoiding other players becomes part of your real-life scheduling strategy, something about the balance starts to feel off.

That said, there is a lot I genuinely love about this game.

The developers deserve credit for how actively they engage with the community on Discord. From Patch 1 through Patch 8, the game has improved massively. They listen, communicate, make changes, and seem genuinely interested in making the game better. That deserves recognition.

My problem is simply that the game itself doesn't give me enough of a sense of accomplishment to balance out the losses.

Multiple unsuccessful runs quickly become expensive. Starting a new character feels like a chore, and relying on Discord matchmaking whenever you want a proper group isn't always something you want to deal with.

Personally, I would love to see more PvE-focused content or progression alongside the PvP.

Give casual and solo players more reasons to explore and farm during Voyage, build themselves up, unlock the tech tree, and gradually prepare for Storm where they can choose to risk their gear and experiment with PvP.

I don't want the PvP or the risk to disappear. The risk is part of what makes the game exciting. I just wish there were more meaningful ways to progress and enjoy the world without constantly putting everything on the line.

So, after many hours, that's where I stand:

I like the game. There is a genuinely great game here, and the developers have already shown that they're willing to improve it.

But if your idea of fun is putting everything you've worked for on the line every time you go out, knowing there's a pretty good chance you'll lose it all, then this game is absolutely for you.

Git gud or get out.

\n\t\t\t\t\tGame so dead, you see the same people in every server, teaming in solo/duo cant get a break. Bugged out the butt to capture trampler from outside captain quarters, waste of your time. You either go storm dive to get killed by a tier 4 against a tier 1 trampler. Voyage is for looting but all the sweats go into it so you cant progress now. Its a dead game now\t\t\t\t\t

Matchmaking changes in multiple updates have progressively slowed the game down, made it run worse, and killed all desire to play. Just being handled so poorly it may be best to wait for a few patches after full release\t\t\t\t\t

The game is not what is advertised. I have 400+ hours.

It's advertised as an extraction shooter.... build a better trampler.. gather more recourses... Be a better shot... win.

but that is not what it is.
The most impactful part of the game is entering a match and quickly finding another player or team to work with (which I haven't done and most players won't.. which is why the game is dying). 2800 players total online at the time of this post. The low for 1 month ago on a Sunday night was at 11k according to tracker.gg.
You are not permitted to intentionally work with someone and plan to team, it's called pre-teaming. However meeting a player during a match... whom you won't be allowed to intentionally team with in subsequent matches.. is permitted. And that makes no sense.

If you want to enter a game solo.. or with your friends... and see how you do... build a walking fortress, Squad up or go solo, scavenge the dunes, gather loot.... which is exactly what the game advertises...
Well you can't do it like you imagined. they left out the biggest most impactful part of the game in the description. to do the rest you must team. Teaming with some random (which is the only legal way to do it) is the biggest, cheapest lever towards success.. costs you less.. you risk less.... 1 drives, other boards... doubles the DPS... ect
Healthy player bases don't want to win by having a numbers advantage w/ ppl they don't know.

People want the 1 on 1 success.. or the 2 on 2, 4 on 4... what type of players want to win with that advantage? Answer? Few. games dropping pop rapidly. 2800 players active online at the time of this post. Turns out there are way more ppl who want to test their own skills... than take a fake W over someone because of a numbers advantage with someone they don't know.

Find a random person... gang up on someone who didn't find a random person.
Devs allow it. Players hate it.

Problems being spoken about as of today:
duping is not fixed
Extracting can glitch you.. and you lose all of your loot and ships.
OC servers are frequently down.
Us central servers just disconnected everyone

Lobbies are dead. You enter a match and there are 1-2 players.
they introduced gear based match making... So after players put time in.. unlocked higher tier tramplers... If they use those parts... there is 0 players in their lobby and they walk around solo.

The discord banned some guy for having a Trump picture... but the dude was making fun of Trump.
It's a weird redit mod power trip situation like that... that reflects how the rest of the game is run...

They support the whiney populations of gaming.. ignore the rest, and try to convince people it's all fine as they creep close to 3 digit activity numbers.
