I thought it would be just another survival game where you collect resources, build a base, and fight enemies.
But somehow... it became much more than that.
The first thing that caught me was the atmosphere.
The island feels beautiful, but at the same time, it never lets you relax. You can be standing there watching the sunset, listening to the wind through the trees, and a few minutes later you’re fighting for your life.
That feeling of never being completely safe is what makes this game special.
I never thought I would care so much about two NPCs, but Kelvin and Virginia became a huge part of my journey.
Kelvin started as someone I thought I would just use to help me gather resources, but eventually I found myself making sure he was okay. Virginia was the same. Somehow, without needing many words, they felt like they belonged in my story.
Building my own place on the island was one of my favorite parts.
It wasn't just about making a base.
It was about creating somewhere that felt like home.
After spending hours cutting trees, decorating, and improving everything, it actually felt like my own little safe place in a world that was trying to take it away from me.
The caves were some of the most memorable moments too.
Walking into the darkness, not knowing what was waiting ahead, hearing every sound around you... those moments created a kind of tension that many horror games try to achieve but don't.

The game features several dozen secrets, a beautiful island to explore, and a mildly challenging story mode. The base building is so fun, the survival mechanics while confusing at first do ultimately flow better and I find the addition of companions my favourite, Virginia and Kelvin are so cute.
However the deal breaker is the cannibals. In the first game they felt just strong enough to be scary and fightable even early game, but then in this game you have cannibals 10 days in that are consistently raiding you and one shotting you. In the first game they felt just strong enough to be scary and fightable even early game, but then in this game you have cannibals 10 days in that are consistently raiding you and one shotting you. The graphics are amazing, the world feels alive, and exploring the island is both exciting and terrifying. Building a base is fun, and the AI companions like Kelvin make survival much more interesting.The caves are genuinely creepy, and every expedition feels rewarding. The story was a bit all over the place, there are a lot of different plots and they all don't really come together. The companions were fun (quite buggy now and then tho). The "antagonist" felt like he was making mild cameos rather than being someone I was against, I didn't feel as connected to him as I did the red man from the forest.
However my major gripe is with the female companion, Virginia, is so clearly written by a group of men that haven't spoken to a woman in the last 5 years. She's wearing a white swimsuit which is affected by rain making it transparent, the default tracker Icon is a heart and the achievement to max her friendship is a wedding ring? This would be fine if she had any dialogue or any indication that she is more than just a confused mentally unstable science experiment? But she is clearly not mentally there as she spends her time walking around aimlessly and giving you dead animals and berries. It makes the player character high key come across like a predator.
Not to mention in the "true ending", where its only been 5 MONTHS!?!?! and she's heavily pregnant? Did yall do the deed like a week after getting her extra limbs removed? did yall get married like a month ago? Its such a strange relationship the developers constructed and is again very clear on the lack of a woman's input on the implementation of Virginia.
Now does that ruin the game for me... not at all... maybe a touch... kinda sours the ending. But its still tons of fun with friends, combat is great, building is a learning curve for sure, and the modes of transportation around the island is a welcome addition. All up an enjoyable experience and I hope the devs maybe read this and take it as constructive criticism and make more conscious decisions for their characters in the next game.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

This game has improved a lot compared to the previous one (The Forest). So many mechanics received upgrades. The combat feels much smoother thanks to the dismemberment system, not to mention the unique building system, which is probably the coolest I've ever seen in a game.

In The Forest, the map was much smaller, so the developers could put more attention into details, create more unique villages, and make each location feel memorable. In Sons of the Forest, many villages and camps feel repetitive, and a huge part of the map is just forest (obviously). I still like it, but I wish there were more interesting landmarks and structures to discover.
Another thing I preferred in the first game was how all the caves were connected in some way. In Sons of the Forest, most caves are basically: go in, grab an important item, and leave.

The cannibal AI is genuinely impressive. They know when to dodge, block, attack, and even watch you from a distance before engaging. On the other hand... Kelvin is dumb as hell. A classic example is how he constantly walks into campfires and sets himself on fire. To be fair, he was even worse during the beta.

If you take your time exploring, building bases, and don't rush through the bunkers and caves, you'll easily get around 30 hours of gameplay. But if you're a psychopath like me, you'll spend 90% of your playtime building stuff. You can create almost anything with the building system.

I honestly can't count how many times I've replayed this game. It feels like a new experience every time. You build different bases, try new challenges, discover things you missed before, or simply play in a completely different way.

Unfortunately, the gameplay loop eventually undermines everything that makes the game enjoyable. "Normal" mode and "Easy" should cater to casual gamers, while harder modes of cater to the extremist/hard cores. Unfortunately easy is normal, normal is hard, and hard is extreme.
Even on the easiest difficulty settings, the game feels less like a survival sandbox and more like a base defense simulator—except it doesn't give you the tools to make base defense satisfying. You're constantly dealing with wave after wave of cannibals and mutants. Effigies have little noticeable impact, enemies can jump over walls, mutants can throw babies at you, and many of the defenses you build either don't scale well or require constant maintenance and resetting.
The most common advice from experienced players is to "build your base on the water" because the AI struggles to reach you and drowns. That's a huge red flag. When the community's best strategy is to avoid engaging with the base defense mechanics instead of mastering them, it suggests those mechanics aren't very rewarding.
The game also creates a strange sense of urgency that works against its own survival and building systems. Enemy threats continue to escalate over time regardless of how much you've actually accomplished. Compared to other survival games, the progression feels backwards. In games like ARK, Valheim, or 7 Days to Die, investing time into your base makes it meaningfully safer over time. Your defenses improve, your technology advances, and you feel rewarded for building. In Sons of the Forest, your base often feels just as vulnerable later in the game as it did at the beginning, despite investing hours into fortifying it.
I don't mind challenging survival games. What I mind is feeling like my time spent building is constantly erased by mechanics that are designed to keep pressure high rather than let me enjoy the fortress I've created.

Compared to other survival games, the progression feels backwards. In games like ARK, Valheim, or 7 Days to Die, investing time into your base makes it meaningfully safer over time. Your defenses improve, your technology advances, and you feel rewarded for building. In Sons of the Forest, your base often feels just as vulnerable later in the game as it did at the beginning, despite investing hours into fortifying it.
I don't mind challenging survival games. What I mind is feeling like my time spent building is constantly erased by mechanics that are designed to keep pressure high rather than let me enjoy the fortress I've created.
There's a fantastic game buried underneath all of this. The atmosphere, graphics, companion AI, and construction system are genuinely excellent. But the relentless, ever-escalating attacks and the lack of satisfying defensive options make it difficult to enjoy the very aspects of the game that drew me in.

But once you start descending into the depths of the bunkers, the game turns into a full-blown elite conspiracy simulation. You arrive looking for a missing billionaire family, only to find that the wealthy elites have established a twisted cult network underground. Seeing the scenes where those white-robed 'Sons of the Stars' cult members commit mass suicide after a ritual gave me literal chills. It is definitely way more fun with friends, because playing it alone makes the adrenaline absolutely unbearable. The story is incredibly dark, the atmosphere is pitch black, and the base-building mechanics are already top-tier. - No soundtrack, no VFX, no proper sound design. Self-explanatory.
- Your character model randomly changes between sessions. You're supposedly special forces, but you might load in looking like a substitute teacher. It happens constantly and years later it's still not fixed.
- Your "companions" will regularly knock themselves down by walking into your bonfire. Sometimes they'll randomly die, and you can't respawn them. With a companion dead you either lose firepower or an automated worker. Both suck.
- You wanna build something? Grind baby. Everything costs an absurd number of logs. Good luck!
- You will get attacked from time to time, and you will never struggle to defend yourself because the AI is dumb. They just break your walls and retreat. That's it. You also have 10 variants of "clever" traps that make no sense, so you'll never build them, because it's easier to kill enemies with a bow or an axe.
- It will ALWAYS be dark in this game. Both huge bonfires and flares produce little to no light at all, same with a flashlight and your torch. I get the "artistic" choice here, but I believe they just don't know how to work with light sources in UE...
- There is no story or gameplay punishment for cannibalism. None. You burn people for their bones, you drop a human arm into your "chicken" noodles, you wear someone's face because it's the best armor — and the game never registers any of it. It's not transgressive, it's just unconsidered. Nobody sat down and asked what any of this was supposed to mean.
- Kilometers and kilometers of empty land. Why build a map this big if you don't intend to fill it with anything? The mountain at the center doesn't even have rock assets on it. You have an "easter egg" at the very top, but do you really need the BIGGEST region of the map just for that? By the way, the only way you can travel is a golf cart... and a monowheel. Really? This isn't just lame as hell, it's lazy. Give me a dirt bike or a normal car with SOUNDS please.
- Your entire building palette is LOGS (and a bit of stone). The furniture — 5-6 assets — is made out of human bones or sticks. You can try to make it look good, but it's quite hard, believe me.
