A great take on monster catcher game and while I'm not a pokemon veteran, it fixes a lot of issued I had or known about when I tried playing pokemon, and I'd say it's the best monster battler game I've tried .
The game is a great balance between complexity and simplicity.
- Element/typing chart is interesting because it's not just a simple damage multiplier, it gives buffs/debuffs to the defender, and there's even cases where the element of the receiver changes, adding even more dynamic to the battle. Not to mention that whenever you encounter a new reaction the game gives you a short tutorial. There's also ingame elemental chart as inventory item.
- Revolving around double battles inherently adds complexity and allows you to have monsters that's built to purely support, not just damage.
- The whole concept of having the person itself having hp is also interesting as it adds a new layer of decision making, as excess damage to a monster's hp is carried over to the human, so it's possible to burst down (or get burst down) a person at low monster hp and killing the human itself immediately gets them out of the fight even if they still have a monster they could switch to.
- The game basically has no grind, rare monsters aren't that rare, catching tells you the exact % and isn't as annoying as pokemon, your level generally keeps up (or even you get overleveled if you explore thoroughly). Being able to transfer any skill you learn also incentivitizes levelling everyone, especially since skills sometimes get random extra effect or stat boosts.
- Perfect atmosphere. There's something special about making a safe haven and banding together in a 'dangerous' environment. This is what a cozy game should be, and this game feels very cozy in this regard.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tSo I've looked at this game a few times and each time I thought "neh, doesn't sound up my alley" with the whole transforming into the beasts and fusions and whatnot, until I caught it on sale for just over $5. And let me tell you, I can't believe I ignorantly slept on it for that long. It's so, so good, from the story, to the various battle mechanics, to the world exploration. Even the copious amounts of platform jumping puzzles didn't piss me off and I usually hate those things with fiery passion.
I only just completed the main story and it looks like there is still so much post-game ♥♥♥♥ to do like collecting bootlegs (this game's version of shinies, only a Beast can have a bootleg of each type so if you're a completionist that's a lot of beasts to find), a battle gauntlet thing, collecting and optimizing Stickers (this game's version of TMs, which themselves can have unique buffs applied to them), and tons of ranger missions and side quests.
Character designs are phenomenal, especially the Archangels. They are all so weird and unnerving to look at, and I was excited to see what each one was going to look like, I love em. The Landkeeper NPCs and the whole lore around them are really funny in the beginning with the bait and switch. The NPCs are pretty good, most of them have an 80s aesthetic that I like a lot, plus there's a friggin' dog as one of the main friend NPCs. Cassette Beast designs, also pretty good! I am extremely amused by the references that some of the Beast designs are making (just a couple examples are Flapwoods and Majortom).
I only have a few scant gripes:
Typings and their interactions with each other are very complex and not easy to remember, ESPECIALLY the interactions. It isn't just 'X typing is weak against Y typing' or 'A typing is resistant to Z typing', there are a lot of buffs and debuffs you can get (and inflict) that is all dependent on typing matchups and it's all just very difficult to keep track of. Don't let that put you off though, I utilized "random ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, go!" with Beasts I visually liked the most and did fine.
Travelling with one of your NPC friends is a double edged sword. They help you in battle yeah but they also appear in the overworld with you, and that stops being a cool and immersive thing when they start getting in your way when trying to complete a puzzle that requires thoughtful movement on your part, or positioning an item on top of a button to unlock some door, because they will bump into that item and knock it off the button. It's so annoying and I want to strangle all of my dumb friends, but Barkley gets a pass because he's cute.
Spoilering the next part because it talks about the main story ending: The ending felt a bit too bittersweet to me, with you and all of your friends (except Barkley) going their separate ways back to their own worlds. Even you and your romantic partner split up, which leads me to wonder why romance was even a feature at all. There wasn't much dialogue or story for it between the 'getting together' and 'we're breaking up now' dialogues, it just felt really hollow. I dunno, I just like happy endings, but that ending as a whole didn't make me that happy. Up until the last like 2 minutes of the main story though, 10/10.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI first thought this game was going to be similar to Pokemon, and while it has some elements, this is a poor comparison. I believe this game fits closer to Persona. Outside of comparisons, this game sets out to deliver a story and does a wonderful job telling it. And for those that don't care, it's quite easy to skip past the story and just play the game.
Most games like this feel very linear, and it was a breath of fresh air getting to wander and take things at my own pace. The puzzles aren't super complicated, though a little tedious at some points. The combat was just complicated enough and offered enough variety that I needed to pack a unique group of cassettes to deal with. It also does a great job at making the player feel like they're making progress. While not every achievement is necessary, getting an achievement made me feel like I was working to an ultimate goal. I have zoned out, becoming way to focused on those achievements, not realizing hours had past.
I beat the game at 13 hours, but with the speed I was going through everything and the amount of post game, you could easily sink 40 hours into this title without running out of things to do. One thing I REALLY appreciated was the different type charting. Some types had advantages over others, but those advantages weren't a damage buff. For example, if your electric cassette attacks a metal cassette, rather than dealing more damage, you apply a unique debuff. This system allowed me play with my favorites more often, and after hour 3, I didn't have to change my team around at all. While some may treat this as a negative, I really enjoyed the experience of messing around, and using the other unique systems to overcome the enemies. These other systems being the number of moves on an individual cassette and the ability to swap moves very freely. I won't explain them in any more detail, otherwise it would spoil it.
Also! Great music, they killed it!
Although this was a great time, I did encounter a few annoyances:
-Overworld movement, while open, allowed for some glitching and skipping. I clipped through the world a few times and could skip puzzles by picking up boxes I was standing on. This becomes less of a problem later but early allows for some weird skips.
-Unbalanced combats. While it was late game, the ability to lose almost instantly feels wrong. Losing just a cassette would have been fine, and it is an interesting gimmick, but there has to be some kind of balance.
-Fusions are ugly. This is just a personal bias. I LOVE the sprites of all the unique cassettes, but when you merge them, there are only a few basic looks they structure over. I saw a couple cool ones, but for the most part they really sucked to watch. Imagine you're fighting a god and you have this massive clown on your team.
-To many achievements. For one quest, there were 6 achievements. While they made sense at the places they were given, it was excessive. They felt like they wanted me to keep playing just to get the achievements after a while. By cutting out a lot of the mute ones, this would become a much smoother and nicer 100% experience.

Let's get the boring bits out of the way. The atmosphere is fun and chill, it does the open world thing quite well by tying main story progression to sidequests and exploration, and also by making the main story mostly non-urgent. Very cool.
There's not that much content to the characters here; what is there is very, very good, but there just isn't much of it; the game doesn't really have any great ways to "vector" the character stuff at you, so it's limited to approximately five support conversations and whatever dialogue you get from resting while they're attached to you. It's fine, it doesn't detract from the experience and honestly I don't think it needs more here.
Now that that's done...
This is a creature collector and has all the DNA of a creature collector. Yes, lorewise you record the creature and use the recording to transform into it, so you're not building a team of fuzzy pets. But if it looks like a creature collector, plays like a creature collector, is tagged "Creature Collector"...
Notably, because the creature is "you" and not "your dog", it shares your level. No more "Well, I need a water-type, but I didn't train the one I got twenty levels ago and there aren't any right now" - grab that water type out of your box and it's good to go. (Mostly.)

Even getting stuck on using relatively optimal builds rather than troll/funny ones, there are so many interesting things to do, and even more "just decent" sets when playing normally.

you can safe it any time or play with autosave. customize the settings and your character.
if you know pokémon and the shinies, there's something similar in this game too, but with the difference that you can catch not just one other form of the beasts, but 14 - one for each element there is. experiment with the stickers you attach on your cassettes to test different attacks or get surprised by a new form your beast evolves/remasters to.
finish the story, do random quests, fill the dex, get all stickers, etc.
you miss a beast in your collection? trade it with your friends or others to get it.
the wild fusions are too strong for you? team up with your friend and beat the material out of it.
the creature designs rock and the music is neat as well. and if you don't want to listen to it or aren't a fan of the voices, you can turn them off. but who would do that?~
only thing I would love to be updated is to be able to fuse with the friend you play with, not just the ingame NPCs (although I have to mention that these didn't work on the switch version, dunno about steam).
