Some people who may not be in the loop or severely misguided will say "But people used mods to cheat!!" Uhh, no? They used third party software, sure there are mods that will most likely give some kind of advantage, but someone who does mod the game, I've never came across the mods with my time of playing. Better yet they say they are ending mod support because people cheated on Invasion and some people cheat on Escalation (Which I've never played), but, it would be such an easy fix, seeing as they use AI, to just vibe code a toggle that allows Mods to be Disabled when entering Escalation or Invasion, And if people are still cheating scores? Ban them, duh.
On super surface level it seems like what they are doing is a good thing, but if you think about it for even a second and have played the game before, it's just a bandaid fix and a reason to cater more towards Streamers, Content Creators and PvP, in a PvE game. Overall, I would recommend not buying this game and not making the same mistake I have as I already have too many hours to refund the game, not knowing they used GenAI and also removing Mod support when they could've taken several roads but instead chose the worst possible way of doing it. \n\n\t\t\t\tI love this game, it gives unique experience and questions how desensitized person can become while educating the player how to read the signs and navigate yourself in unknown environment.
Yet the devs focus on adding more of competitive content and questionable choices.
- Invasion, which makes impostors from being a hindrance into PVP gods more dangerous than Prime Assets;
- Escalation trial updates since adding the leaderboard, making it from fun "try to last as long as you can and have fun with quirky variators" into a mess of a consistent spam of Broken Reagent, Level One, Hardcore and Nostophobia which actually can be fun, but they're constantly gutted into level, usually one after another, making any reason to have rigs, amps and upgrades useless;
- The latest update introduced permanent damage after Trial #21, making the escalation punishing, boring and unfun;
- Mods are completely disabled for leaderboard and invasion therapy safety. You can not play game with mods at all. Why won't you allow the mods again, but require players to turn them off before playing the Invasion Therapy and removing the ability to appear on the leaderboard?
- The game still has AI generated content, even after being released back in 2024 and having marvelous artists such as Hugo Richard. Is it really that hard to make a contest for posters?

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\ti love this game, and that's why i'm leaving a negative review until red barrels fixes load times. it was already taking 2-3 minutes to get to the main menu and then 4-8 to load into the sleep room. after the chemical leak update, it's now closer to 5 and 12 minutes. my friends with less optimal specs take 1/3 of the time to load. now it's a drag going between the sleep room and the trial too. absolutely unacceptable. i would stop playing at this point if it wasn't for my friends making it worth it. i may still if there isn't relatively quick action on this; the scale is now tipping pretty severely toward my time being better spent elsewhere.
this game could be so much better if the devs adopted better practices. it suffers from iterative failures to prioritize long-term player retention over stringing casual players along with the content mill. we don't need a new prime asset every year. we don't even need prime assets on a schedule! we need them when they fill a niche that enriches the game experience instead of adding needless complexity. if the cash shop is underperforming, i can almost guarantee it's because players are uncertain about the sustainability/lifespan of the game or not engaged enough. these are also fixable problems.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It's awful but it's something I can look past if the game actually has fun replay ability factors, which this game does, otherwise I wouldn't have over 200 hours in it. But mainly it comes from the ability to use mods for QoL factors, silly sound mods or cosmetic mods that make the game unique, replayable, and fun.
Though this recent update completely killed the games life by a significant margin. Killing off mod support to prop up an already dying game mode in invasion (that takes nearly 7 WHOLE MINUTES) to even find a game before it kicks you out of the queue for too long of waits since NOBODY plays it, and nobody WANTS to play PvP in a mainly PvE game, yet the developers have their AI fantasy about becoming a pvp game to rival Dead by Daylight? Or some other horror slop game of similar genre and if it goes against their precious idea of invasion they kill it.
They refuse to implement stuff that Left 4 Dead had already figured out nearly a decade ago, which is dedicated mod support and simply having the ability to just.... not have invasion enabled if it detects you have mods. Granted I also don't know how to code that but i'm not a game developer, so I'd assume the actual game developers know how to do that! But they probably also use AI for their spaghetti code as well. It's honestly sad because this game is actually really good, if you look past the generative AI stuff, which I understand if some people can't. The game is absolutely worth every single penny: the developers have crafted a unique, tense gameplay experience, excellent interaction mechanics, and stunning audio design that keeps you terrified until the very end of the match.However, the overall impression of this magnificent project is heavily ruined by one critical nuance. I strongly urge Red Barrels studio to completely abandon the use of low-quality, AI-generated content. The presence of obvious AI art on posters, environmental elements, and cell customization items completely destroys the game's dense atmosphere. Instead of being fully immersed in the aesthetic of insane Cold War-era experiments, players constantly stumble upon ridiculous generation artifacts: distorted faces, anatomical errors, and blurred details that look like cheap and lazy hackwork.The gaming community deeply values human craftsmanship, and seeing these kinds of shortcuts in a project from a renowned studio with excellent in-house artists is, frankly, extremely disappointing. This game deserves a respectful approach to its visual component, and this generated slop needs to be completely replaced with high-quality, hand-crafted work.

There are artists who will do the work, it is very saddening to see such a good game decide to skimp out on such a small thing. Sure 'its a small problem' but ai isn't some amazing thing. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tgreat game but not only do they use AI for literally most of the games posters/paintings/general "still images," (most of the pictures of people you see around the map are AI, they give you an AI generated profile icon for winning 10 stroop test games, etc.) they use the same ai images everywhere. you have a robot that churns out a million pictures an hour and that one black and white bald guy picture is on every map. come on man. anyway game is super well optimized, balancing is kinda ♥♥♥♥ (barricade rig) but that only applies if you play invasions, pve balancing is also way out of wack. on intensive getting hit by the big grunt will deadass chunk you for 60% of your hp. (probably just a skill issue but ive been cornered in exit gate on sabotage the lockdown more times than i can count) soloing missions is a pain in the ass, but game is super fun with friends (to be expected)

Gone are the little graphics or audio mods that made the game silly or fun, got to cater to the people that have not realized yet you topping that leader board isn't going to get your ♥♥♥♥ wet.
To be honest the game has been in decline for awhile now. It just didn't have the lasting appeal the company wants it to have, its something you come back to now and then and have some fun. I have played it now for a bit, and I can tell you that it is scary the first 5-10 hours. After that, you are easily able to tell where the jumpscares come from & you've played against most killers so you get familiar with their attacks and so. So jumpscares aren't really scary at this point, but some do catch me off guard cause I am locked into a certain task. But it happens rarely.
Replayable I think it is if you are playing with for example with or without friends. I think the best way to enjoy this game is to play a few games with or without your friends, then come back to the game at a later point and play a few levels you've already played and play some new ones. The RNG exists for objectives which means you don't always know exactly where your objectives are even if you have played the map previously. There are 4 difficulties which adds a layer of challange to it as well.
In short, I would say this game is fun not because it is inherently scary. But because it has a lot of gore & sexual themes which makes it feel much more "unfiltered" in comparison to other "scary" games. The game feels afterwhile more like a thriller rather than a scary game.
I would recommend new players to play introductory / standard by yourself for 3-5 games. Thereafter play with friends. If you hop into a game with friends first, you won't learn the main game mechanics.

That voice needs to get outta my ear tho. I've had just about enough of his insults and belittlement. Although he did call me wonderful once and I rode that high for a while, so... I don't mind him as long as he's praising me and my hard work.
And I will say that the lag and mic quality when playing with friends via crossplay needs to be studied. It's not a big issue, but the gameplay difference is noticeable between when I play with other friends on pc or when I play crossplay.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
