It is one of the best RPGs that I have played in recent years, and a clear recommendation for anyone who enjoys RPGs. It is also the first Unreal Engine 5 game where the art design outshines the typical engine flair so much that it doesn't distract from the experience.
The game world and its layouts, the flair, and the overall feeling were accurately captured.
- Core quest structure:
The familiar quests were maintained and only enhanced by slight, well-implemented additions.
- Classic character progression:
Fixed experience points and static values for enemies ensure a rewarding sense of progression.
- Meaningful expansions:
Logic gaps were closed, and areas that felt underdeveloped in the original were well expanded.
The mechanic feels immersion-breaking, where in the original it had a feeling of urgency to it, to not get discovered. The effort rarely matches the rewards found.
- Climbing mechanic:
The biggest criticism. The climbing feels artificially tacked on and does not really fit into the rest of the game.
Edit: I started the game 1 Month after the Original release, most technical issius were resolved when i played. I had not a single Game-Crash during normal gameplay, the only crash i had, and could reliably reproduce, was pickpocketing Dexter and Santiago in the old Camp. First settlement, constantly being blackmailed for money you don't or barely have. If you deny then you're in a fight with someone you will have a truly difficult time beating if you can't figure out a way to cheese it. Doing a required quest to progress, get escorted to a whole other settlement, as soon as you get into new settlement, you're told to perform a task and google said it was annoying time waste so I chose no. Well, dude didn't like that and he fights me. I can't even hurt him. There are tons of moments like this. No i-frames on the dodge, block prevents some damage, some times. Beast/ animal hitboxes are wonky and damage frames are not clear. It's all the frustrations of a hardcore immersive RPG from the 2000's, with updated graphics. Hell, a loading screen after death says "There's no shame in lowering the difficulty". Well, you can't unless you start another game. W-t-f? The world feels ALIVE and is full of lore, NPC's, crafting, magic, weapons, builds, paths and discovery. Every character has a story and a personality. The whole game has a special vibe with the world feeling magical and dangerous at the same time. I would describe it as a cross between kingdoms of amalur and dark souls but that wouldn't do this game justice. It's gothiclike just like soulslike and metroidvania is a term. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tWow. Just wow. This game exceeded my expectations in about every way imaginable. Now I see why people rave about the original games so much. According to people online this is a faithful remake. I myself have never played the originals so I wouldn't know, but either way it was amazing and I had a blast playing through it. There are so many things they did well it's hard to name them all but here's a few things I liked:
1. No hand holding
The only thing I can compare this to in terms of it's hardcore nature with no map markers is probably Morrowind. I absolutely loved the fact that you don't even start out with a map, giving you a true sense of REAL exploration in the Colony. You won't be staring at a minimap the entire game missing the entire beautifully crafted world. The Colony has a unique look making it pretty easy to remember landmarks and such so you can figure out where you're going most of the time.
2. The leveling experience
You can barely swing your sword or pull back a bowstring when you start. As you level up and train, your character will gradually get better, faster and be able to learn combos. I really liked having to actually talk to everyone and find the right person that can train you in specific skills. Each camp has its own specific people you must find for each specific skill. Some camps won't have certain teachers, etc. I love that if you stumble across beasts or enemies too high of level you will have a really hard time or just have to come back later when you get stronger. That gives you a lot to look forward to as you level up! You will get very strong and hard to kill by the end of the game but even then the finale still felt like a real challenge. I'm not sure if there is level scaling but it sure didn't feel like it. If there was any at all it could have been near the finale but I am not sure.
3. Combat
The combat in this game feels really really good. Your strikes feel like they have real weight to them and combos are pretty simple. If you button mash it will mess up your combo so you have to time them right. It isn't too hard to make it inside the window to make a combo work. The magic system felt great from the little I used it too. When I do another playthrough I will probably do a magic only build to try out!
4. Story
The story is fairly linear from what I understand, except for the fact that you can choose what camp you want to start with in the beginning. It's pretty simple and easy to follow from beginning to end and I thought it was really good!
5. Questing
I thought the quests in the game were great and fun! The side quests sometimes feel like they can be hard to come by which makes finding them and completing them feel all the more satisfying. The main quests are great as well and the game gives you time to go out into the world and complete side activities without making you feel like you need to rush the main story. I thought the balance was on point. And if you want to just go out and kill things for XP you can do that too.
5. Optimization
I was able to run this on mostly high settings and get anywhere from 65-100 fps. There was only a few times where I would get a little FPS drop if there was a ton of NPC's all doing something at the same time in a very small area. But overall it ran very smooth and I didn't have a single crash the entire 80 hour playthrough.
Summary: Overall I really enjoyed this game and if you're looking for a hardcore zero-to-hero RPG experience that gives you a true feeling of exploration then get this game right now! It was worth every penny to me and I think Alkimia Interactive did a fantastic job.

Difficulty is insane. Game becomes endless try and reload system, as soon as you managed to advance your character a bit, everyone else just becomes 10x more powerful. This is so far from the original game which was just the opposite. Was challenging enough without causing frustration. This? I sincerely doubt developers tried to play this.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Ice magic freezes water, fire magic can light torches and campfires and transforming into various animals and beasts has a multitude of advantages.
the game can move slowly, mods make it better and it isn't as great as it could be (no character customization and sorcery could be much deeper) but all in all you could do much worse.

I unfortunately never played the original *Gothic* back in its heyday, but even as a newcomer, it's obvious how much passion went into this remake. Alkimia Interactive didn't simply give the original a new coat of paint. They rebuilt its world while preserving the kind of uncompromising RPG design that made games from this era so memorable.
Surprisingly for an Unreal Engine 5 game, *Gothic 1 Remake* looks fantastic and runs remarkably well. Even with DLSS enabled, I haven't noticed the excessive ghosting, shimmering, or grainy image quality that can plague other UE5 titles. The environments are incredibly atmospheric, the lighting is gorgeous, and the Colony genuinely feels like a hostile place rather than a beautiful backdrop built around the player.
What impressed me most, however, is how alive the world feels. The dynamic NPC system is phenomenal. Even with DLSS enabled, I haven't noticed the excessive ghosting, shimmering, or grainy image quality that can plague other UE5 titles. The environments are incredibly atmospheric, the lighting is gorgeous, and the Colony genuinely feels like a hostile place rather than a beautiful backdrop built around the player.

I went in blind, thinking maybe it would be like Dragons Dogma II in that DDII was the only other game I’d played where the game just did not care that you were the protagonist. Boy was it frustrating and confusing at first, thinking I’m too weak to get anywhere, so maybe I’ll just lead monsters back to the town guards and get experience and money that way, only to find that they drop no loot until you get the right skills, which cost an amount of money that feels obscene early on, and you get no experience just for being near a dying enemy. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, and I can’t say I really know when it started to feel like things were getting easier, but at some point, I grew up and became a warder. I have none of the nostalgia for this game that the original players do, but it is a work of art and I love it. No other game, even Elden Ring, has given me such a sense of being a basic person in a world gradually figuring it out. 10/10\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Having just finished the game, I will heartily recommend it just for the first couple of chapters. The worldbuilding is exquisite. You start as a nearly useless nobody who will barely survive a 1on1 scrap with the weakest of woodland critters. You need the help of people around you, but they don't really care all that much about you. So you got to make yourself useful. Surviving and becoming stronger requires determination, using your brain and getting to know the world, and being smart about some of the more thuggish NPCs. Gameplay mechanics like combat are decent. Nothing special, but nothing irritating either.
Unfortunately, once you've gotten stronger and have moved up in the world of Middle-Earth: The Oz, the story starts to move away from the prison camp politics and its people, and into more general fantasy adventures of a hero uncovering long lost secrets and saving the world. There is nothing wrong with this in itself, as many amazing stories have been made of such setups. It is just obvious that most of the effort in writing, worldbuilding and NPCs reacting to storybeats went into the early game. Late game becomes more of a jogging simulator of fetch quests, with little interesting dialogue or lore to justify it all. Occasionally something will happen in the world of the prison camp that shakes things up, but it feels like an afterthought. Like the developers woke up on a tuesday and went "oh right, maybe we should do something with the prisoner factions to make the place feel alive still."
Still, overall a very enjoyable game.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tGetting to full health is a major problem. Why did you guys remove the healing you get every time you sleep? Why doesn't food heal more to make up for it? Why can't I just play the game instead of constantly needing to craft more food just to survive?
For the rest, it is an awesome game with an amazing story, characters, and environment. But if I have to download a mod just to make your game playable, especially since you removed features from the original because they were smart enough to know this was a problem, I have to give it a downvote. This is just really bad game design.

A few more hours in and I have only one thing to say: the game is unplayable. I lost my mount, the game crashes a lot, the combat is just bad, and the lockpicking minigame is awful. Furthermore, when you are in your backpack menu, you still interact with the overworld (which caused me to die a lot because of accidentally stealing something)

Everything this company touched is bad and braindead. On top of that, the game is 50 bucks while its actual quality is worth 20 (considering the story and the world were already there). I will never buy a game from this company ever again. If this were their own original RPG, no one would have bought it. It is that bad of an example of game design.

Exploration and World Design - Exceptional.
Story and Characters - Very Good.

Game starts very slowly and has some old mechanics that you have to cope with, if you're not an old timer. So initially there is a lot of friction that not everyone will understand or will be able to handle.
However, past that gameplay barrier game starts to shine. I love that game never lead you by hand from A to B via markers, etc. You have to take care and listen. Almost every story related action is meaningful.
I had few crashes, after some long session, so I count as one bug -> memory leak.
Combat and character progression seems the weakest point of the game. I found parry almost impossible to trigger reliably (I did not manage to understand parry window).
Game has many secrets, optional quests and stories. In order to experience 100% of content you have to have 3 playthroughs, but personally even 1 playthrough overwhelmed me in my 104 hours journey.
I hate the fact, that game never tell you that you can learn SRT/DEX for up to 100 level. I hate this limit. Moreover, be careful if you want to max out your stats: DO NOT DRINK STR/DEX PERMANENT POTIONS UNTIL YOU REACH 100, because permanent potions are almost ONLY way to improve desired stat past level 100. I prefer, there is no 100 cap for attribute. As gamer, I wish when you explore every nook and cranny you should get ultimate reward for exploration in form of OP character at the end of single player game. Your character will be OP, but not THAT OP.
Game has some weird and probably intentional logic. You can almost without any serious consequences to kill almost all non named generic NPCs (guard, shadow, orc fighter, etc.) quickly boosting you lvl. Closer to end: chapter 3+ I started knocking down camp named NPC, looting them afterwards for usually best gear. Usually they do not become you enemy, at least not for long. However I had Lares bugged: we was always attacking me on spot. And man, he probably one of the toughest enemy in the game.
Not sure if this was bug, but I was able to kill Gomez and Torres as soon as they kill the mages, and picked up Ore Armor and upgraded it immediately. Funny that some further events was commanded by Gomez, even though we has already dead. \t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Visually, it's a mixed bag: some scenes are genuinely stunning, others feel overloaded with detail to the point where it's almost too much to take in at once. Also, you need some very good specs for this to work as intended. I think it's the first title of 2026 that posed a challenge for my computer.
The story, though, is where it shines — genuinely engaging and well told, easy to get pulled into.
And the soundtrack is excellent, really elevates the whole experience.
