If you free him in chapter 4 and escort him through the non-main gates, he will end up in the New Camp, but by chapter 5, he teleports back into the Old Camp prison. This completely breaks his interaction and prevents you from freeing him again. To avoid this game-breaking bug, do not use a lockpick to force his cell early. Free him in chapter 5 before talking to Gomez when the actual quest triggers, and make sure to escort him out through the main gates so he safely reaches the Swamp Camp.

However, after completing the game on the maximum difficulty setting, I can confidently say that Alkimia Interactive has delivered a highly respectful and genuinely grim remake that honors the legacy of the Penal Colony. Patch 1.0.3 removed the bow from the Old Fortress, which was part of my Hard Mode permadeath run. It was hard to reach before the story takes you there, and by the time it does, the bow isn't even that strong. If I had known it was gone, I wouldn't have bothered going there, and I wouldn't be this frustrated.

i played gothic as one of the first video games ever on a cd and everything was waaay too difficult for the very young me. but i loved every second of it. and i have a very vivid memory of roleplaying as Diego, Gorn and Milten with my best friend, which basically shaped my whole childhood. thank you so much for letting me experience this feeling again! i got sucked right back in. if you got the ore to spare and liked the old versions - definitely buy this game.

As someone who grew up with Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 as some of the very first computer games I ever played, I went into the Gothic 1 Remake with a lot of affection. Gothic is about atmosphere, danger, consequence, social hierarchy, and that very specific feeling of being a nameless nobody thrown into a hostile world that does not care about you. And to its credit, the remake understands a lot of that.
The strongest part is still the premise: You are not the hero. You are not special. You are poor, weak, under-equipped, and very much at the mercy of people who can beat you senseless if you overstep. The basic idea that your character fights like an untrained idiot until you actually invest in combat skills makes progression feel physical, not just numerical. That early-game struggle is still one of Gothic’s greatest strengths, and the remake manages to preserve much of that feeling. The faction setup remains fantastic as well. The Old Camp, New Camp, and Sect Camp all have distinct identities, and the early non-linearity around discovering them is still one of the best parts of the experience. Gothic shines when it lets you manipulate situations, pick your allegiances carefully, and survive through a mix of violence, opportunism, and nerve. Few RPGs have ever replicated that specific feeling. What I also appreciate is that Gothic’s world still feels unusually reactive. Beating someone up does not mean killing them. People remember what you did. Crime matters if someone sees it. And so on.
That said, the remake is not free of problems.
It is still clunky. Sometimes in a charming way, sometimes not. Combat can be satisfying but also feel awkward, stiff, and occasionally frustrating at the same time. Movement and interaction are not always as smooth as they should be. There are also missing quality-of-life features that would not have damaged the original concept at all. The remake also misses the chance to smooth out some of Gothic’s rougher quest transitions. I do not want the game to become a modern checklist RPG with glowing arrows everywhere, but some situations still feel more obscure than immersive. The introduction to the New Camp, for example, remains easier to miss than it should be, and there are still moments where quest or story NPCs refuse to talk to you for no obvious reason until you have spoken to someone else who does not seem directly connected. That is not old-school difficulty — it is just avoidable confusion or clunkiness. A few smarter convenience options, clearer feedback systems, better quest, story and features handling, and less friction in repeated traversal would have helped without turning Gothic into a generic modern action RPG.
Performance and optimization are also not where they should be. The atmosphere is strong, but the technical side does not always support it. Stutters, uneven performance, and general roughness can pull you out of what is otherwise a very immersive world. I do not mind Gothic being harsh, uncomfortable, or demanding. That is part of the identity. But technical roughness and unnecessary inconvenience are not the same thing as preserving old-school design.
The voice acting and audio mix are also inconsistent. While many of the side characters do a good job of selling the atmosphere, the main character’s voice direction and mixing leave something to be desired. Compared to the rest of the cast, some of his lines feel oddly flat, detached, or poorly placed in the overall soundscape. For a game that relies so heavily on dialogue and immersion, this is a noticeable weakness.
My biggest criticism is more structural: Gothic always was (and is) at its absolute best when it is about survival, factions, social tension, and becoming someone inside the colony. The more it moves toward a more conventional “chosen pawn in a bigger fantasy plot” direction, the less interesting it becomes. In the original, that shift always weakened the experience for me, and the remake still has to live with that inheritance. I would have loved even more faction-specific responsibilities, rivalries, sabotage, intrigue, and consequences after joining a camp, for example. This is also one of the broader areas where a remake really could have made a difference.
Still, the heart is here.
Gothic was way ahead of its time in 2001, and many of its ideas still feel fresher than systems in much newer RPGs. The remake does not completely smooth out the rough edges, and while it's honestly fine to preserve some of them (Gothic DNA), some of those edges should have been polished more carefully. That said, it also does not betray what made Gothic special. It remembers that the player is not really the center of the universe — more like a nameless pawn caught in the orbit of stronger personalities.
For veterans, this is a flawed but worthwhile return to the colony. For newcomers, it may feel strange, harsh, and occasionally outdated — but also refreshingly different from the usual open-world formula.
TL;DR: The Gothic 1 Remake is clunky, under-optimized, and missing some sensible quality-of-life improvements, but it preserves enough of Gothic’s brutal atmosphere, faction identity, and reactive world design to earn a positive recommendation. Not perfect, but clearly made with respect for what Gothic was. I'm really looking forward to the future and the chance to see a Gothic 2 Remake.

Gothic was my childhood game and I always wondered what it would be like to play it with a fresh coat of paint. This is exactly that. The old game is preserved perfectly. Anything that is changed is an upgrade when compared to the original (even the controversial lockpick system). It is hard to talk bad things about the remake but surprisingly I will have to say that the worst thing was the new polish dubbing. It's nice they got the old voice actors for the main characters but it is somehow worse than the original, a bit of a shame but not a biggie. There is a few new mechanics like upgrading your armor(you have 3 pieces to customize), but also climbing which fits perfectly into the game and honestly if not for some junkiness I'd say it is a perfect addition. Some locations have been expanded, the boss fights have been reworked from ground up, the fighting generally speaking is much improved from the original which was the biggest issue. There is some new content, it is all very fine, any rewrites of the story are done in such a way that I was sometimes not sure if it was always like that or not. I can't recommend this game enough. It is for the fans of the original but also perfect introduction for newcomers. I really do hope everyone who loves action RPGs picks this one up. - A fresh view onto the old fight mechanic.
- Filled some gaps from the original game.
- Cool Ru voice acting.
- Added new quests (not so many, but anyway).
- Reworked orc's camp.
- The fight with the Sleeper looks awesome and feel more natural than original.
- Overall it is a good remake.
Cons:
- Bad optimization.
- Final fight with Mad Galom is awfull. Small area with stupid collisions in which the hero is always stucking... The boss itself a few times was spawned outside the arena and it wasn't possible to finish the fight and game.
- Many bugs. E.g., Torlof in the chapter 2 says "Go to Lee and join the mercenaries", but it is impossible in the chapter 2. Sometimes items aren't pickable.
- Quest with Stone is broken. I opened the cage in the chapter 2 or 3. When I came there in the 5th chapter, I could only release him and of course he went to the New camp. No armor upgrades, +ruined life of the Stone. Nice.
- The idea of lockpicking is cool, but not for that "valuable" loot. Just don't spend your time and install mods with autolocking or auto-opened chests. It isn't worth to spend your time to see ham or brush.
- Alchemy mostly useless. Unfortunately there isn't an option to ask someone (teachers for example) to craft a permanent potions for some price (500-1000 ores or something like this).
- Craft is useless. Many people told about this. Moreover, there is not an option to ask blacksmiths to craft something using your blueprints (in the ideal world, where crafted weapon is better than usual).
- Many things were copy-pasted from the original game as is and it is bad. For example, the quest with Neck. It is so stupid that the guard died from molerats near the old camp....
- Most bosses are sponges, meh... Many demons and orc's shamans might be killed while they are spawning.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Played and loved the original as a kid (many many times), probably won't ever go back to it. The remake ruined it for me in the best way possible.
If there was one thing I absolutely LOVED about this game compared to the original — the characters. More fleshed out, more alive, more important.
Best seen in the way the remake handled the 4 friends. Their backstories were expanded on, and they just seemed more like an actual bunch of genuine friends instead of just some random dudes who conveniently happened to be members of separate camps.
Especially enjoyed what they've done with Milten, he was an absolute delight.
Also shout out to Xardas, who's now even cooler and edgier.
I love this game.

The start is pretty brutal, and you gotta run away from enemies a lot, and try to scrounge XP and quests that you can complete as much as possible. Once you get a few levels, the game really opens up. You can decide which camp to join, specialise in your weapons of choice, and you can finally take the fight to enemies instead of having to run.. at least most of the time. The game only gets easier at stretches if you explore and level up a lot, but some fights can be very tough even in the end. I'd recommend just getting as powerful as you can and not cutting corners, because i've been punished doing that several times, resulting in complete slog fights as i wasn't doing enough damage. And it feels great to easily dispose of enemies after the initial struggle.
I really enjoyed the overall story, though moving from chapter to chapter can feel a bit jarring as you move from one group of characters to another. Learning what's really going on in the bubble and getting involved with the different factions is a lot of fun. The dialogue is consistently funny, and many characters are memorable despite not getting that many lines.
The game is janky and you can run into some major bugs. Sometimes my save also got corrupted and had to go back a save or 2 to be able to continue the playthrough. These are big issues i hope get fixed soon, but there's no guarantee of that. I was able to complete the game, but it was close a few times. I will recommend the game regardless, but be aware that it is not finished and your mileage may vary.
Backtracking is another thing that got pretty boring in the end. The game gradually provides you with ways to speed up travel between places, but they are limited and you still end up running the same stretches back and forth many times. Maybe a flying mount would have been good in this regard.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI remember writing down feedback for the first demo that Alkimia released. It was terrible. I could not imagine a worse way of misunderstanding the source material. From the get go I had a hard time understanding why a team of Spaniards was chosen to remake a game that is a cult classic in central and eastern Europe. Demo proved they had no idea what Gothic is all about.
Imagine my surprise when the game finally released, and almost all of my complaints were resolved. These crazy sons of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ did it. They actually read all the feedback, familiarized with the original games, investigated what makes them tick and conveyed that into the remake. I doubted you Alkimia Interactive, but you really did a good job with the end.
Remake conveys what the original was all about well. It adds a lot of new stuff, introduces cut content, fixes plot holes on top of that. It all fits the original game's spirit. There are some issues, like not everything is as useful or expanded on as one would imagine, there are still glimpses of cut content, scratched or simplified ideas. This was an issue in the original, it is still kind of an issue in the remake, but we still have much more to play with. All of that with really beautiful visuals. Some of the animations or NPCs' faces are a little clunky, but let's not be delusional and expect AAA quality from a small spanish team remaking a famously "wooden" game.
I would say that if you are a huge fan of the original game and still on the fence, just buy it. You should not be disappointed. Especially if you are used to bugs in the original. If you are a person that was always interested in the original, but just felt it was too dated, the game is also worth getting into, but I would wait a few months for fixes. I am not sure if I was just unlucky, but I came across a decent amount of bugs. Nothing that would totally nuke my playthrough, but I am definitely waiting for more patches till I start a new one.
Since I am chaotic like that, some random thoughts, issues and observations:
- I found the new lock-picking a little intimidating at first, although I grew to like it a lot in the end. Once I invested points into the skill and tried it a few times, it clicked and opening chests became a fun activity. I did not really have to actively think about it, just let my brain do the job. Although I still think some of the most difficult chests in the game are a little too hard to open. Like it just does not feel right for the puzzle to be so complex that you have to spend 10 minutes on it. I would nerf these top chests. Alternatively, maybe some sort of end-game super duper lock-picking mastery skill should be available to make it a little bit easier if the player spends a lot of ores and skill points.
- With the latest patch, chests show difficulty, but it is completely false in my experience. I had 4 level chests that I opened in seconds, with some 3 level chests being impossible to open in a reasonable time in my case.
- One of the first things that I thought when they promised to add cut-content, was Scatty's arena. I was expecting that I could participate in more complex arena fights and/or put ore on fights. Instead, Scatty just kept saying that there will be fights in a few days, but there were never any fights. Just like in the original. I might have missed something though.
- Magic is broken. It is simply not fun or balanced at all. From so many offensive spells, only like 3 are really worth it. First of all, most spells need to be buffed. Second, the majority of spells should not force you to stand in place when casting. It just makes them useless. Sure, if they buff fire rain for example, it would make sense for this spell to have a very long casting time and stop nameless hero in place, but it should not be a case for a regular Fireball.
- Other things that make mage playthrough worse are robes. They are just too weak, do not provide any real defence or useful unique bonuses.
- This is a complex topic, but NPCs often do not react properly to the player's guild or forget facts. Like, Lee called my mage a Guard, or Water Mage called me a brute when I was sent to help him (even though I was a mage myself). On top of that, closer to the end of the game, a lot of NPCs forgot that they were supposed to teach me. Like Lee or Lares did not realize I was a member of the New Camp and would not teach me. I had to roam around the world looking for alternatives because of that.
- Reaction to stealing, killing or trespassing. They work on a basic level, but they break as soon as something less expected or more complicated happens. For example, at least twice or thrice, NPC or basically entire camps became hostile for no apparent reason. I am almost certain it was because I was stealing from them and they noticed that when they should not, or/and the game did not inform me that I was caught. Another example was when I started killing guards in the Old Camp. I come back a day or two later, and some NPCs would attack me on sight, some would not, some would take weapons out and say stuff "Stop that" etc. It is just inconsistent and it is unclear what is actually going on.
- There is this sort of "thrust" attack for melee weapons with a long range and ability to make enemies fall down. It just felt too powerful in comparison to alternatives. Once I discovered it, I found myself spamming it all the time in almost all fights, especially in the first half of the game. Maybe other attacks should be buffed a little bit instead? Like, NPCs often tell about how enemies can be defeated by doing attack after attack, but combos are not as useful as in the original, because there is no "staggering" effect, or it is very mild.
- Mount Scavenger feels a little ridiculous at first, but is a great feature. Especially considering it was planned for the second game if I am not mistaken, so it is not out of nowhere.
- Most sections where we travel with a companion are really annoying. They keep losing their way, which is bad, but the worse issue is that it is extremely easy to hit them by accident and make them hostile. This is especially bad for a mage with aoe spell . I was already struggling as a mage, but because of friendly fire, I was having even worse time in these types of quests.
- Not enough loot laying around. It is as if Level Designers or whoever was responsible for placing these things around the map did not finish the pass. Frequently you can find a path leading somewhere, only to find absolutely nothing, or something insignificant, like a worthless random mug. Pretty unrewarding.
- I think the economy needs some fixes. I like the idea of traders having a supply and demand system, but it is overdone in my opinion. Especially with something like animals' parts. It is not especially useful to learn these abilities, since you would need to run all around the map selling a few parts here and there to earn some decent ores.
- Not enough enemies respawning between chapters. Not only there are barely any respawns. It spawns some basic Molerats or Scavengers. It makes repeated travels from camp to camp boring. Not only should more enemies respawn, in more places other than the main paths, but they also should be stronger. It would even make sense story-wise, with Sleeper's influence, making creatures more aggressively moving to areas around people. Frost Shadowbeast should definitely respawn to not block players from finishing Cavalorn's task.
- Climbing skill felt kind of random to me, but in the end I think it was a pretty cool idea. It makes for a lot of alternative paths. I still feel like it does not fit Gothic all that well, but it is fine gameplay-wise.
- I really like all the new designs and looks of locations. A lot of cool new little details, interesting sights.

I would say that if you are a huge fan of the original game and still on the fence, just buy it. You should not be disappointed. Especially if you are used to bugs in the original. If you are a person that was always interested in the original, but just felt it was too dated, the game is also worth getting into, but I would wait a few months for fixes. I am not sure if I was just unlucky, but I came across a decent amount of bugs. Nothing that would totally nuke my playthrough, but I am definitely waiting for more patches till I start a new one.
Since I am chaotic like that, some random thoughts, issues and observations:
- I found the new lock-picking a little intimidating at first, although I grew to like it a lot in the end. Once I invested points into the skill and tried it a few times, it clicked and opening chests became a fun activity. I did not really have to actively think about it, just let my brain do the job. Although I still think some of the most difficult chests in the game are a little too hard to open. Like it just does not feel right for the puzzle to be so complex that you have to spend 10 minutes on it. I would nerf these top chests. Alternatively, maybe some sort of end-game super duper lock-picking mastery skill should be available to make it a little bit easier if the player spends a lot of ores and skill points.
- With the latest patch, chests show difficulty, but it is completely false in my experience. I had 4 level chests that I opened in seconds, with some 3 level chests being impossible to open in a reasonable time in my case.
- One of the first things that I thought when they promised to add cut-content, was Scatty's arena. I was expecting that I could participate in more complex arena fights and/or put ore on fights. Instead, Scatty just kept saying that there will be fights in a few days, but there were never any fights. Just like in the original. I might have missed something though.
- Magic is broken. It is simply not fun or balanced at all. From so many offensive spells, only like 3 are really worth it. First of all, most spells need to be buffed. Second, the majority of spells should not force you to stand in place when casting. It just makes them useless. Sure, if they buff fire rain for example, it would make sense for this spell to have a very long casting time and stop nameless hero in place, but it should not be a case for a regular Fireball.
- Other things that make mage playthrough worse are robes. They are just too weak, do not provide any real defence or useful unique bonuses.
- This is a complex topic, but NPCs often do not react properly to the player's guild or forget facts. Like, Lee called my mage a Guard, or Water Mage called me a brute when I was sent to help him (even though I was a mage myself). On top of that, closer to the end of the game, a lot of NPCs forgot that they were supposed to teach me. Like Lee or Lares did not realize I was a member of the New Camp and would not teach me. I had to roam around the world looking for alternatives because of that.
- Reaction to stealing, killing or trespassing. They work on a basic level, but they break as soon as something less expected or more complicated happens. For example, at least twice or thrice, NPC or basically entire camps became hostile for no apparent reason. I am almost certain it was because I was stealing from them and they noticed that when they should not, or/and the game did not inform me that I was caught. Another example was when I started killing guards in the Old Camp. I come back a day or two later, and some NPCs would attack me on sight, some would not, some would take weapons out and say stuff "Stop that" etc. It is just inconsistent and it is unclear what is actually going on.
- There is this sort of "thrust" attack for melee weapons with a long range and ability to make enemies fall down. It just felt too powerful in comparison to alternatives. Once I discovered it, I found myself spamming it all the time in almost all fights, especially in the first half of the game. Maybe other attacks should be buffed a little bit instead? Like, NPCs often tell about how enemies can be defeated by doing attack after attack, but combos are not as useful as in the original, because there is no "staggering" effect, or it is very mild.
- Mount Scavenger feels a little ridiculous at first, but is a great feature. Especially considering it was planned for the second game if I am not mistaken, so it is not out of nowhere.
- Most sections where we travel with a companion are really annoying. They keep losing their way, which is bad, but the worse issue is that it is extremely easy to hit them by accident and make them hostile. This is especially bad for a mage with aoe spell . I was already struggling as a mage, but because of friendly fire, I was having even worse time in these types of quests.
- Not enough loot laying around. It is as if Level Designers or whoever was responsible for placing these things around the map did not finish the pass. Frequently you can find a path leading somewhere, only to find absolutely nothing, or something insignificant, like a worthless random mug. Pretty unrewarding.
- I think the economy needs some fixes. I like the idea of traders having a supply and demand system, but it is overdone in my opinion. Especially with something like animals' parts. It is not especially useful to learn these abilities, since you would need to run all around the map selling a few parts here and there to earn some decent ores.
- Not enough enemies respawning between chapters. Not only there are barely any respawns. It spawns some basic Molerats or Scavengers. It makes repeated travels from camp to camp boring. Not only should more enemies respawn, in more places other than the main paths, but they also should be stronger. It would even make sense story-wise, with Sleeper's influence, making creatures more aggressively moving to areas around people. Frost Shadowbeast should definitely respawn to not block players from finishing Cavalorn's task.
- Climbing skill felt kind of random to me, but in the end I think it was a pretty cool idea. It makes for a lot of alternative paths. I still feel like it does not fit Gothic all that well, but it is fine gameplay-wise.
- I really like all the new designs and looks of locations. A lot of cool new little details, interesting sights.
- Color palette makes the game an eye candy, but I still think it should be somewhat more moody, darker and barren.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Lately, once a year comes a time when I start questioning my lifelong relationship with games. Maybe my time has come to leave gaming world, because nothing I play grabs my interest, at least not for long. And then, a game comes out that reminds me, that it's not exactly me who is the root of these troublesome thoughts, it's the games themselves. Mostly.
As a Gothic fan who completed both first and second games (we don't talk about the third one) couple of times each 15-20 years ago and never played them again, this remake was a unique experience. Usually good memories become better than they were with time, and Gothic 1 Remake literally recreates the memories that you think you have instead the actual ones. I honestly struggle to name another game that had such an effect on me.
This remake makes the already clunky original much more approachable to the new possible fans of the series, while being faithful to the original. Not in everything, but in far more than I'd hoped. Some things from the original didn't need to be repeated, and I'm glad they weren't (looking at you, UI and combat inputs!). But a whole lot what gave the Gothic it's soul and character is there, and I could feel the atmosphere from the moment Bullits fist had flown into the Hero's face. Additions and restored cut content from the original add to the game in a way that wasn't considered bad or heretical, at least not by me. And, I guess, that I'm a minority that prefers the new lockpicking system in favor of the guessing game of the original series.
For me, this remake enhanced almost anything that was good, kept some of the bad staff that made the original the game it were, and removed a lot of bad staff that made the original unnecessary worse than it could've been. I hope that this remake is successful enough for the studio to remake the second Gothic. If they'll manage to keep the atmosphere, while adding enhancements to the game, the same way they did for the first Gothic, the day of it's release will be celebrated by millions of people worldwide.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Alkimia did an amazing job bringing the essence of the original game to modern tech without losing the clunky charm. It's very much not a modern game in its design.
