\n\t\t\t\t\tUpdate: It looks like that when the planned Arc of Tomorrow update arrives this game would become finally a great game. I would recommend the game then! The Test of Time update removed the major flaw of the game (strict age mechanics) and with the second big update we might get modern units as well.

With the new update it's playable. But is is still not good.

# My main critique: No modern units!
Where are the modern units?? The unit development somewhat ends between WWI and WWII. You can still sense the game was meant to end with the Modern Age. Never meant to play any longer, which is disappointing for a Civilization game. From Antiquity to Space isn't a guiding principle here. While all previous Civilization games also had modern units, you're missing out any real modern units in this game. There are no modern tanks. No rocket artillery, no ground air defense guns. Talking about planes, jet planes are never invented in this game. Yes, you read it correctly, all fights are fought with propeller planes. Also the WWII bomber is the only option to drop an atomic bomb. IBCM? No. Also not from submarine, because rockets and cruise missiles were ever invented in this game (except for the one that goes to space, but that's merely from a project you can finish in a city). The most modern ships are still the huge battle ships with a wooden deck. Of course there is no stealth technology of any kind. Even if the modern units won't change anything significantly in the gameplay and could be mainly a graphical and power update, it still feels like a cheap decision to leave them out completely. If there were modern units, I'd be considering giving the game a positive rating. I hope those units will still be added.

# Oversimplification and unnecessary micromanagement
They tried to simplify the game, and in part it worked. Sometimes it's too much simplification and sometimes you wonder why they integrated new granularity in management. Where the simplification goes too far: Tile improvement and extension of borders are now the same process. It would have been better if the borders extend by themselves and tiles could be improved without workers. There is only one religious unit, no inquisitors anymore. Freshly added unnecessary micromanagement: I don't want to assign a new resources to a list of cities every time in detail if something changes in resource availability. Can't this be done automatically? Yet, the game continues to prompt for new resource assignment. Also, repairs after a natural desaster and tile improvements can become a bit tedious.

# Design decisions that are not understandable nor fun
There are design decisions that are just not understandable to me and don't make the game fun: Why an artificial settlement limit? Let me build (or keep!) cities. Why can't I quickly assign planes from an airport to an airplane commander? Why don't the planes keep their assignment when the commander lands at an airport? The upgrade button for commanders is always available – regardless whether there is a promotion available or not. It would be good if there were an option to play without natural desasters.

# Age sections
The age transitions are alleviated, but still integrated in the game. It's playable now and you can keep the civilization, so it's okay now. Also, the crisis effects before an age transition can be deactivated in the settings of a new game (yet not the politics cards). But you still have to make the following decisions before an age transitions: Shall I start a war in this age (because after the age ends everyone is at peace again) and do I still need to upgrade this unit now (because in the new age all players get the new units for free). However, the age mechanics – alleviated with the update – don't cause a negative rating for me anymore.

\n\t\t\t\t\tCivilization VII was a grand disappointment at launch. For a quick TLDR, I have nearly 7,000 hours on civilization V and VI. These are my two favorite games, so when I heard about Civilization VII I was immensely excited, and ready to dive into the game head first. I preordered VII like a dumby, because I thought any issues with the game at launch would be remedied through updates and DLC. This has not been the case, and I highly encourage any players debating which version of the game to purchase, to acquire V or VI and not VII. Here's why:

Pros of VII - Navigable rivers, graphics are excellent, cities' districts needing to all be taken in order to own the city, combat is better than V or VI. The aerial combat in particular is super cool, including the commander system. Commanders make the game better and are better than great generals from the previous games. Small nations are also represented better and combine a combination of barbarian clans from 6 and city states from 5.

Cons of VII - Main issue is the game is far too expensive for an unpolished and unfinished release. Core elements of the civilization series weren't included in the base game. The playerbase were shaken down shamelessly for more money, and I was disappointed that nations like the United Kingdom were locked behind a paywall. A paywall which also didn't include any type of game expanding features. When civilization V released DLC packs, they either included a very unique and interesting set of cultures, or a brand new game system AND new cultures. For less money. I understand inflation yadda yadda but come on! When my friends and I first played this game it crashed repeatedly during the era transitions, which were designed poorly, initially, and were often the cause of crashes. Cities in different nations look identical and it takes a good bit of squinting to see which part of the city is which. The UI is completely awful, despite what they tell you about updates, and I don't know if it can be fixed. The civilipedia is sparse, the town focuses don't show what bonuses you can receive. Cultural policies are lame and aren't permanent, meaning there is 0 sense of continuity in your empire unlike previous titles. The continuity aspect is further devastated by the era transitions on the default setting, which offer you several boring choices. You can either become a culture that is vaguely similar or related to your previous one, or you can stay the same culture and have no cool bonuses for your country.

To conclude, I was disappointed by this game. I would choose two of the previous titles over it any day. One of those titles being initially released in 2011, 15 years ago. The studio's quality is only decreasing for the almighty dollar's supremacy, and I hope the love and joy for history that was felt in the previous titles can be reinfused into either some major DLC or FREEEE overhauls for this game, or into Civilization VIII (whenever that releases I will probably have a whole new house and family.) Play civ 5 and 6, I hope this review saved you money.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI can't tell if it was sheer hubris of the game developers thinking they know better or sheer stupidity. The reality is most of the original devs who made civ 1-6 are long gone, and now the studio is most likely filled with people who don't care about the product, don't understand the product, and of course don't care or understand the audience.

Who did they make this game for? Certainly not the built in loyal audience and fans they already had.

Imagine releasing a civ game, a game about building up an empire overtime from a fledgling city to an unstoppable juggernaut, and cutting out the unstoppable juggernaut part by introducing the PROFOUNDLY TERRIBLE ages system. Imagine releasing the game with forced civ switching that nukes all immersion of playing as that civ slowing growing in power. The double whammy of utter stupidity killed this game on arrival, and these ideas should have died in the crib when the planning was occurring. Instead we have it here, at maturity, due to developers who wanted to make their game, not a civ game.

Imagine being so blind to what your audience wants, that you looked at DATA from civ 6 and said "Most of our players don't finish their games in the final era and out of the tiny, minuscule amount of players that do finish games most say the end game is not interesting. OBVIOUSLY we should prioritize that small percentage of people who get to the end game content and make a game that addresses the end game issues by destroying the ability to scale in power and progression overtime. You know the core feedback loop of why most people play our game, we should get rid of that."

THE AGES SYSTEM, the big selling point of this game should have been a red flag to any developer that understood this audience. They stole the idea from humankind - a massively inferior game with no legacy and a commercial failure. WHY? Why did they take the ages + civ swapping mechanic from a VASTLY inferior game? I can't answer this without assuming a great deal of glue was being inhaled by the game director.

I have played this series since CIV 1 on the SNES. Bought every single game on release. I love this series. I have countless hours in each game. This one is the poison pill. This single game made me understand how Star Wars fans feel.

I don't even want to touch base on other stupid and terrible concepts like faraway lands, capital continent, the map generation, permanent tile placement, the bizarre overbuild mechanics, the stupid specialist placement issues with overbuilds, and many many more.

Most of the people who created this game have a fundamental misunderstanding of why people play civ games. They will probably try to defend themselves and say they had some vision, but I think their vision ruined the legacy of this game. The brand damage will be difficult to overcome. I personally will not be purchasing any other DLC for this game, which will be a first, and will not be looking forward to civ 8 in 12 years.

Whom ever made this should have never been allow to touch, never mind influence, the development of this game. I can't even make jokes. I'm just mad that people were allowed to make and release this with the civ title. This is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ civ knock off, this is not a civ game.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tIt's different from the last couple of Civilizations games, but it's still fun in its own right. I find the city building to be more involved, especially with the Ageless and overbuilds, requiring planning out in advance where you might want to place them. The ability to have generals marshal 4-6 troops cuts down on moving individual troops cross-continent to a new front. It also makes cycling troops from the front line to the back to rest much easier.

The town/city system also streamlines each turn. Cities are like other civ games, but the town system is more hands off. You can buy units a limited set of new buildings in towns, but all the production gets converted to gold. Towns can also specialize in certain areas (tourism, food, fortified, etc.), which opens up new buildings for purchase. You can convert towns to cities for a lump sum of gold, and it's up to you to balance the number of towns vs cities.

I don't mind the Age transitions. They're a bit heavy handed, but I like what they were trying to fix (snowballing civs that made the ending years boring). There are some game options that allow you to carry more of your gold, troops, etc. to the next age. Or you can go for a harder reset which lets each civ start the new age on more even footing.

Similarly, you can now keep one civ the whole time, or switch in each age. Each seems fun for different reasons, and I appreciate the choice (I didn't buy the game until they gave the option to keep the same civ).

The AI is the same. Its building placement is suboptimal, and the military will throw themselves at your fortified troops until they die. The diplomacy is also lacking (although improved with the recent patch).

If you're ok with the age transitions, then I think this is fun a 4X game. If you're not, then don't buy.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI was moved to write this by scanning a bunch of recent reviews and experiencing genuine bewilderment at how often one basic criticism gets repeated, i.e., new game not same as old game. Which, like... no. New game NOT same as old game. Different game!

I didn't want Civ VII to be Civ VI with 20% better graphics, or even Civ V with 200% better graphics, because I already own and can still play both of those games. I wanted a new game. Civ-swapping and age transitions are big, weird changes. It's fine to not like them - I've broadly decided that I DO like civ-swapping but I'm still on the fence about age transitions, at least in their originally-envisioned form - but it seems silly to get angry that they're there. What else were the devs meant to do? Imagine going to see three different productions of Hamlet - one of them is absolutely classic British RSC fare with everyone stalking around in doublets and enunciating, one of them is genderswapped and has a musical interlude, and one of them has been relocated to a space station called Elsinore-9 in the 31st century. Of course you're going to have feelings about which one you liked most and which least, but to decide that one of them was the 'right' way to do Hamlet and the others were unacceptable deviations that must be swiftly apologised for and corrected... it's art, man! The whole point is to screw around, try stuff, and see what works! Maybe Space Hamlet made a mess of the soliloquy but absolutely nailed the bit with the arras! That's why we're here!

Plenty of stuff here is great, and I think the only people who are going to find this game genuinely unpleasant to play are people who had one very specific place they wanted to be tickled and are not being tickled in that place. Some bits feel like great ideas that aren't quite hitting their potential yet - I really like the concept of treasure fleets, but after a while they do start feeling a bit turnkey, stuck halfway between an automatic loop and a thing you exert control over. And some bits honestly don't work. I've found religion, for example, pretty tedious in every game I've played so far - you convert, the AI converts back, you convert BACK back, and so on until the age timer runs out or you stop caring. (Though, to be fair, the system in Civ VI was more complicated, took longer, and I'm not sure was actually a great deal more satisfying.)

But... I don't know. To me a 'do not recommend' on Steam means 'this game is not worth playing'. I think this game is absolutely worth playing, as much for the bits that don't work as the bits that do. I liked it when they brought in districts in Civ VI, even though that, too, was greeted with howls of fury. I'm glad they shook it up again, I enjoy the result, and I hope they shake it up yet again when Civ VIII eventually comes around - because otherwise, really, what's the point?

I spent a lot of time reading negative user feedback on YouTube and Reddit before pulling the trigger on this game. To be completely honest, most of those criticisms are entirely valid.

The biggest point of frustration for many—including myself at first—is the Age transition system. Having the civilization you carefully built over hours forcefully ended, only to be pushed into a completely different civ you might not even want to play, feels jarring. It disrupts the historical immersion that the franchise is known for and can feel like being yanked out of your own empire's story.

However, I decided to buy it thanks to a 50% discount and the anticipation of the recently announced "Earthrise" DLC. And here is my honest takeaway:


If you buy this at half price and mentally reframe your mindset—telling yourself "This isn't traditional Civ VII, this is a brand-new 4X game with fresh mechanics"—it’s actually a pretty solid and enjoyable experience.

Once you look past the forced civ-swapping, there are genuine quality-of-life improvements that fix long-standing series issues:

  • No more unit-moving fatigue: The new Commander system lets you transport whole armies at once, completely removing the agonizing late-game micromanagement of Civ V and VI.
  • Streamlined empire management: Removing builder units and separating Towns from major Cities allows you to focus on macro-strategy rather than tedious tile-by-tile maintenance.
  • Dynamic geography: Navigable rivers add a fascinating tactical layer for naval operations and inland raids.

If you expect a direct sequel to Civ VI, you might end up disappointed. But if you treat it as a spin-off or a completely new 4X title altogether, the core gameplay loop is engaging, especially at a discounted price point while waiting for the upcoming DLC expansion.

I achieved both victories so soon after entering the "modern age" that I felt cheated, so I started a new campaign with only science victory as my goal. I haven't even built my first aircraft and I've already researched everything. There is nothing more to research! The game hasn't ended, but it is boring me to death! They left so much out from the previous civs that this has got to be the most lackluster civ game I've ever played! I'll do Humankind, Millennia, or even ARA next before I load up this wannabe Civ game! I'm glad I got it on a sale, though I'm still upset I spent any money on this. \n\t\t\t\t\tCiv 7 isn't as good as civ 6. Civ 7 is more frustration than fun.

Positives:
City growth, population management and worker management have all changed for the better. Natural wonders aren't too overpowered and the management around bonus/special resources works better than in other civ games. In general, some of the gameplay feels fairly well polished and there are some new mechanics around ages and crisis that can help levelset against runaway dominations adding some later game challenge. I appreciate the new mechanics, though I could have gone a different way, but in all not a negative. Stacking lots of small bonuses works better than a bunch of large bonuses. Diplomacy is a bit easier and used more often.

The bad:
Well, almost everything else. This is a regression backwards to where you have to click on every single thing every single round. It quickly starts to feel more like work and micromanagement than playing a game.
Can't autoexplore with anything but a scout, autoexplore consistently breaks - even though old autoexplore would go and get loot huts for you.
Ships around a coast require attention every round
Every single city expansion has to be individually managed, land acquisition cannot be automated or queued, all individual cities can't autodecide either because of the way districts are setup.
Every age change is a regression in which cities and resources reset, breaking a lot of progress and setting you back at every age.
Can't queue research well, All I can do is click to a later research which will skip the "2s" of many side researches.
Army integration is really bad, unpacking needs to happen on a per unit basis in many cases because the unpacking will often put units in bad locations, IE archers on the front line instead of in the rear. Generals, even though they have a stack on them are the ones that take damage first when attacked by other units, breaking the army.
Ship pathing always selects to go into deep water when they will take damage - for naval, settlers and everything. It doesn't even bother with fastest path, which could take a settler 2 further land hexes to have a faster water crossing, it only takes the shortest drawn path.
Pathing for units is really bad, I can't tell if a unit will do what I want it to do before it moves, if I tell it to attack an adjacent tile, it might do it, or it might not. If there's a cliff that I can't see, it will path many hexes around instead of confirming that's what I want to do. If it's on a hex with a general it may do this anyway even though there's a clear path to attack. There's a consistency for units to be in boat formation when on rivers, even after making it to an age where roads are common, which requires for the enemy to make bridge districts to make my armies work - which never happens. Also bridge districts are a waste.
Descriptions don't align correctly with some actions, like the razing of a city either doesn't work correctly with the influence description or has an incorrect description. Same with descriptions on some of the cards around specialist upkeep.
The map generator isn't great, biomes don't feel cohesive or interesting.
Setting up armies is neither great nor convenient and many of the promotion abilities are not good, but are required to get to necessary ones.
Starting a new game doesn't preserve the settings that I have to recreate every time, saving settings forces a save of the map seed.
Autocycle units only half works, sometimes it will go on to the next unit, like for attacking and moving, but not for other commands like upgrades and sometimes on movement if I queue outside of the range.
Upgrading units when in an army is way too many clicks, and a bad interface.
Nothing is explained in the game, if a unit doesn't have line of sight to hit something, there's no description telling you what's wrong, if something doesn't work or is unavailable, it just doesn't work, always making me wonder if it didn't take my input or if there's a real reason it doesn't work.
Setting up trade routes is pretty dumb, I have to send the trader out to a city and then establish a trade route, instead of setting it all up in one click. This also means you have to manually track all trade routes.

\n\t\t\t\t\tProbably the worst Edition of this franchise. A lot of highlights from past editions are ignored. It's the most basic one with very low managing capacities. The game is incomplete. It looked like they throw us a game without finishing it. They had to do an update version so you can select your own winning criteria.
Here's a list of what's missing and also some bugs.
- can't select the priority of your cities ($, prod, culture, science, etc.)
- it stops at the mid 20th century technologies : no Internet, no satellites, no furtivity, no parachute, no airport to transport soldiers, people, etc.
- the diplomatic part is dramatically poor. You can't negotiate anything except for commercial routes, festivities or poorly effective measures. You can't exchange money for resources. You can't threat someone of war if they don't agree to your proposal.
- this is the worst : you can Nuke your allies without any concerns. Without declaring war. And it doesn't affect the level of your relation. It is like a invisible attack without no one knowing.
- some movement on the map, especially on the ocean, will make your boat disappear and reappear somewhere else on the map.
- I bought some planes which were disappearing as soon as the next tour arrived.

I played every editions. My favourite remains Civilization V. This VII is to forget. I'll wait and see if I will continue in a upcoming VIII. I'm truly disappointed of VII even if I am a fan of Civilization

\n\t\t\t\t\tThere has been a lot of negative comments about Civ 7, especially when the game came out first. I have virtually played all Civ games (except Civ 1) and I really like this one. Compared to Civ 6, there are a lot of changes that make sense to me, such as towns and cities, population growth mechanism, combat, trade, etc. Even the much critized age changes with selecting a new civ and city degradation are interesting and make a game less dull (to me, at least).

The price is too high, but that was already the case for previous installations. I bought the Settler edition on sale for 60 EUR, which is still a lot, but acceptable IMO.

I haven't played enough to give a final verdict, but all in all Civ 7 is a solid and real good game.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tAs a long time fan of this franchise and being gamer for the last 30 years playing a wide variety of games and genres over that same period. I have never been more disappointed in a game than I was with Civilization VII, I truly wanted to enjoy this game, but I ultimately couldn't. I have played Civ Revolution, IV, V, and VI.

I loved Sims City 4 and when Sim City Societies came out it was a betrayal to the core game and the fans, it was a new city builder that so happens to have the same name as it predecessor with cheap mechanics. When City Skylines came out I didn't have to figure out how to play it, because I knew how to play it because it built onto what made Sims City 4 great, even though there was some rough spots with City Skylines 2, I still felt like I was playing a quality game with new mechanics that built onto the old mechanics. The theme park genre, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 was the best, but ultimately flopped with subsequent titles, and when Planet Coaster was released it built onto what made Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 great. Civilization 7 has that same feel, Fire axis abandoned what made the previous games great for them to do a complete restructure on how the game is played. All previous titles I never had to re learn the game, I just had to venture and learn the new mechanics that were built onto the old. With 2k being the publisher, I would imagine they may have been at fault for the unpolished parts of the game.

Civ 7 you feel like you are not building a civilization or strategizing how to build your empire, instead it feels like a player is just clicking around and doesn't produce any meaningful mechanics, or mechanics that the player would want to spend more time to learn. It feels like you are not invested in the empire you are trying to build.

Civilization 6 complaint was issues with AI and long turns, I like that they removed the districts and builders and replaced it with a city sprawl instead of almost everything being in the city center. A Big city feels like a big city in Civ 7, however how they get there they sacrificed a lot of the core game mechanics of previous titles. There is little to no city management now and the game feels clunky.

I like the idea of towns feeding into the big city and roads already being built between the city and town. I feel like with some more polishing, this mechanic would have worked really well.

The over simplification of the game ruined the feel of the game, you feel like your not building and learning about a civilization, even the encyclopedia feels empty and unable to learn about the various things you have built into the city from a historical perspective.

I have more complaints, but ultimately this game isn't true to the franchise.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tBetween Civ 5 and Civ 6 I have 4000+ hours of play time. Civ 6 has been my go to game since it came out. With that said...I am 11 hrs playtime in Civ 7 and I wish I had listened to all the negative reviews. I basically force pushed myself into buying it because it was 50% off.

This game is soooooo disappointing. It doesn't even feel like a Civ game to me. They put far too much attention into flashy graphics and neglected the actual gameplay. I have forced myself in playing 11hrs as well and I don't know if I will ever play Civ 7 again. They would have to do something crazy to change the playstyle (gameplay) at this point of which I do not think possible.

The game is just so slow moving and they changed a LOT of in game functions that made the game so much fun in 5-6. I hate...

- The new Merchant (trade route) function.
- The fact I dont have the option to pick how many AIs I want to play against.
- I miss the builders function vs this new auto plot purchase function.
- I miss being able to purchase the tiles instead of slow auto growth.

There is just so much I can't get on board with here. The game seriously moves soooo slow. I kept trying to give it time thinking mid or late game would get better but that simply isn't the case. I will be going back to Civ 6 when I feel the urge for some Civilization crack.

Don't waste your money, not even on a sale. I wish I had listened to the reviews and my inner self.

Because of "data driven insights" forced on the developer by the publisher, they decided everyone would rather play 3 vaguely related civ games instead of one coherent one. Apparently the way we all played civ in the past was wrong because of the data and this is a choice being forced onto us because the publisher knows better.
