I've been a civ fan for almost 20 years at this point and I was really *really* excited about Civ7, Got the founder's edition and everything. When the game came out, it was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but I tried to remain positive about it, focusing on the all the interesting new things they were trying and giving all their choices a fair shot. Heck, I even *liked* playing it, despite the mess of a UI, unintuitive systems and lack of information it was giving at that point. Ultimately the game was more Early Access than finished product and it definitely still has a way to go.
I was entirely willing to give them grace for that, and kept trying the game after each major update (and most of them were pretty good too)
However, after witnessing the unabashed greed that firaxis and 2k are daring to show with the dlc system for Civ7, there is no feasible way I can recommend this game.
Civ 7 came out with 30 civilizations and 21 leaders, a respectable number compared to previous civ games (at least now that you can select all civs in any age since the test of time update). However with the game being condensed down to only 3 ages, compared to the 7-9 ages in Civ 5 & 6 (depending on DLCs) means that the overall quantity of content is still on the lighter side.
Thus, the dlcs; with 2 leaders, 4 civs and 4 wonders in each dlc pack, they increase the games content by ~10% in these specific sub-sects of gameplay. In theory, not a bad amount of content for a dlc... until you realise that they want you to pay HALF THE PRICE OF THE FULL GAME FOR A SINGLE DLC. It is an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ disgrace and the pinnacle of greed. Not even Paradox, who are literally known for their egregious amount of dlcs, would try pulling this ♥♥♥♥.
I so desparately wanted this game to succeed, I kept telling my friends that they were improving things, working on making everything better, just give them time. But firaxis and 2k seem intent on burning away every ounce of goodwill they built up with their community over the decades.
Civ 7 feels like it was made because the shareholders wanted more money, not because the devs had a great idea for a new game. There is no passion here;
Less ages, less technologies, shorter play sessions, no scenarios or fun game-modes/settings, less maps, literally 0 fun or interesting achievements. ♥♥♥♥, the game didn't even have co-op/teams as an option at launch.

I have loved Civilization since I was a kid, and have played through multiple iterations of the games. I have over 400 hours in Civ VI, and I really hoped Civ VII would be able to live up to my hopes. It did not. Even with the test of time update, the UI is still *meh*, the era system is annoying, and all the countless limitations that have been added into this game just feels weirdly controlling. Where in older games you had more control over your empire, Civ VII feels like it's trying to control you and force you to make certain decisions every turn. My recommendation? Don't buy it. Just go back and play whichever Civ game you wanted this to be more like, and don't waste the money. Even for half price this wasn't worth it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

While I love the game, I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love it, to me it's a great experience and I wholeheartedly love it. But, I hate it at the same time. It has numerous issues to fix, ranging from performance, quality of life improvements, gameplay improvements, and more. No flak to the developers and the ones pouring their heart and soul into this beloved game and its sister games, but what the ♥♥♥♥ Firaxis? I paid ~$200 AUD (iirc) for the Founders Edition when the game came out. I got all the subsequent DLC's and was generally fine with it, I got what I paid for and I actually enjoyed the game.
But Firaxis smelt money and they're livid. A new DLC for $40 AUD while the game is this unfinished, has numerous issues to fix? Hello? Same with the DLC's I got with the Founders Edition! DLC's are fine if the game isn't finished but they shouldn't be huge DLC's that add alot of content while the game is on life support!
It genuinely pains me to see Firaxis, and many other companies, such as Paradox, throw away their consumers because of money. The work of countless people who love their product all thrown to the side because some high-up exec said sales were low. When will companies realise that they have to actually finish their games before they can add DLC's? Do they not see the catastrophic ratings?
I love Civilization VII the way I do a cat that brings you a dead rat as a gift. I like that you got me this, I like that you exist, but did you have to bring me a rat? Did you have to bring me an unfinished game with hundreds of dollars of DLC's ontop of it?
Please, Firaxis, fix your game. My heart goes out to the developers and those who pour their heart and soul into this game.

I have a lot to say regarding the game. Plenty of good. Plenty of bad. The Devs really are making positive strides and like Civ 6 I expect this game will continue to cook.
However, the DLC has been insane, and I have not complained about it because I knew it would be. Hence why I bought the whale pack. Come to log in today to play the new leaders, apparently I do not get this one. Gotta buy it.
Maybe this is me yelling at clouds, but I feel like if you are shilling a whale pack it should actually have the whole game in it.
I dont want to bother with details or argue. I am disappointed. Game itself is 7.5/10 in current state. Better than before for sure. But wtf devs. The damage you are doing to the community is insane and self inflicted.

Over the past 1.5 years, they've made updates attempting to appease players who were already upset with the game. They've released more DLC as a way to recover their reputation and their shareholders' wallet dips. Meanwhile the Religion systems are underdeveloped, AIs are wooden and unable to trade fully. Countless other existing features beloved in previous games were sidelined in an effort to shove overpriced content down players' throats.
In June 2026 for the "Brush and Blade" collection, they're releasing HALF of a DLC for $30. The collection comes with two leaders, two civilizations now and two more later. The civs are overpowered and feel unbalanced intentionally as a reward for people who coughed up the $30 for the privilege to play unfinished DLC. Civ6's 2018 and 2019 full expansions cost the same amount, added entirely new systems, civs and mechanics.
Firaxis will happily charge you full price for half the content, change the systems underneath you and still release an unpolished, unfinished game. Don't be a sucker and don't absolve them of their mismanagement and bad practices. The community didn't force them to release an unfinished game, 2K did. The community didn't demand a release of unfinished DLC on an "IOU", Firaxis and 2k did.
The game isn't being cherished, it's become an exploitation engine, attempting to siphon as much money as possible with the least amount of effort making their game "Stand the Test of Time". The only thing that will continue to last is the bad taste in our mouths from playing an undercooked game that has had its spirit extracted from it, its reputation destroyed and its potential smothered.

The tile and resource yields are confusing to the player. Loyalty basically doesn't exist. There aren't any space projects other than a single launch pad, so say goodbye to your spaceports. The space race in this game is an utter joke.
Now how about the NEW features that aren't in any other Civ game? Let's first talk about leaders. Since you're essentially leading up to 3 different Civs (yes I understand the test of time update doesn't force you to switch anymore), your leader doesn't make sense at all. Imagine being a shogun of england. Another gripe I have is the immersion breaking "leaders" the game forces you to use to get the Civ you want. Want Italy? Have Machiavelli. Want America? Have Harriett Tubman. Immersion completely gone since not even the leaders are leaders. The era transition system as it stands is pretty OK. The Civ transitions are actually quite cool in my opinion, but era transitions halt a lot of projects or even wars and this can get quite annoying.
Combat in this game is the most in depth as it has ever been and is probably the only thing they got right. I have no notes on that.
If they add more eras, techs, units, buildings, wonders, and mechanics that make the newer features make more sense then I will write a brand new review and recommend this game. But as the game stands right now, I feel like I was robbed and betrayed with false promises of a game that would stand the test of time. This is almost as bad as humankind and that's probably because they tried more to be like that game than a proper Civ game. 2/10, but with potential to be a 8/10.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

When I went from Civ 5 to Civ 6, I still recall missing Civ 5, but that honestly faded pretty quickly once I got more used to it. I could feel the polish, I could feel the improvements, I could feel it being a better game.
I've tried and tried to get into this game, but it feels like I fight the game itself more than the enemies. Some changes, like not having to manage citizens, feel good. But trying to figure out what is going on in the UI. Keeping track of the myraid of systems and unintuitive processes/steps/trees.
I guess the world is really beautiful. But it might as well still be the fog of war for trying to figure out what's going on.
I hoped the Test of Time update would improve things, and there's some things it did, other things it made worse, and it just crushed my faith that this game would be brought to a point where I once again would stop missing the previous iteration.

Civ 7 is the biggest disappointment I've had. All previous Civ games were about meaningful choices, as you guided your civilization through the ages. Civ 7 is about completing a boring and pointless checklist the devs created, to keep you from having a fun or powerful civilization. Every age is mapped out, and no victory is possible. You color within your allotted lines, and each age ends with your civilization being knocked down.
Want to do anything meaningful with Culture? No. Not allowed.
Want to conquer an Empire? No. That's not balanced. Stay within your allowed limits.
Want to customize your land, building improvements? No: each tile only gets one improvement, and it's all decided for you.
Want to build anything meaningful and lasting? No. Everything you do in each Age will be erased when it ends.
Fun is not allowed: it has been sacrificed to ensure you don't get too strong.
Creative gameplay is utterly missing: it has been replaced by walls that force you down a safe and insignificant path.
This is what Civ looks like when the developers only care about balance, and forget they were supposed to make a game.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI didn't plan to purchase Civ 7 after hearing about the ages forcing you to switch to another civ, but after the Test of Time update, I decided to finally buy it.
I really wanted to like this game, but if I had to sum up what I feel about this game in one sentence, it's: Nothing you do in Civ 7 feels impactful.
It's really odd because you can obviously see you're making progress in your science/cultural trees, building districts, etc.. but I don't FEEL the impact of anything.
Pros:
- Test of Time allows you to stay with your current Civ
- I LOVE the stacking units to a commander function. Really makes moving a lot of units less tedious. It also feels like how a real army would move and act
- I also like that the commander is the one that gets the promotions and his promotion upgrades then go to the units surrounding it (I know commanders have an option to upgrade the radius of their influence, but I wish it was more like the units attached to the commander can go as far as they want and they get the baseline upgrades. And then if they're in the commander's sphere of influence, those upgrades get an additional +1 or +2 in stats or whatever)
- I like how they made it so you don't have to constantly renew your alliance, and that your allies join every war that you're a part of.
- I like how they removed the ability for units to hide out in the city forever so you're not able to destroy the unit after destroying the defenses of that district.
- Visually, the districts are a lot more realistic than Civ 6
- I do like how the you can befriend an independent and help them turn into a city state. Being a suzerain does feel a bit more impactful than in Civ 6 because they actually remember what you've done for them and it isn't just a game of how many delegates you can send vs. other civs. I also like how you can create more units for your city state and eventually even have the option of absorbing them into your civ.
- I like how they got rid of the Giant Robots. Those just made things too easy at the end of the game in Civ 6.
- I like the new fortification function where you use up basically 2 turns to create a fortification. Makes you have to think about positioning more.
- Animations are great, I really like how much faster the animations are too. I did like the attack animations in Civ 6, but it can get a bit tiresome bombarding a city center with 6 rocket artilleries. (don't even get me started on the planes)
Neutral:
- I'm still making up my mind if I like how they got rid of builders. I'm leaning towards "cons"
Cons:
- Diplomacy between the independent/city states and other civs feels even less consequential than Civ 6. Almost like they couldn't figure out how to expand on Civ 6's diplomacy, and just said "f*** it"
- THIS IS A BIG ONE since I ALWAYS continue playing for a while after someone wins. NOTHING happens after a civ wins. It seems like all the civs just stop expanding and stop interacting with each other.
- Also, every game I've played has always led to all civs hating each other by the end. It's really odd
- Taking over cities is now wayyyy too easy
- Pacing feels OFF....One of the things affecting pacing is the fact that you can't produce anything in new settlements with production points until you spend ever increasing amounts of money to turn them into a city. It feels like it really stalls progress of your gameplay.
- Kinda weird, but I don't like how your units and everything just magically changes after the age changes. It completely negates any point in trying to progress in your science and cultural trees because you know you're just gonna be caught up next time the age changes.
- Also, the progress in your science and cultural trees doesn't feel nearly as impactful as it did in Civ 6.
- No canal district? No Panama Canal wonder Golden Gate bridge wonder? These were interesting wonders, one of which actually gave you a geographical advantage (Panama Canal)
- The functionality of districts, again, don't feel as consequential as in Civ 6. I think it has to do with the fact that you can just overbuild over anything and you just see number go up or down. In Civ 6, I really had to pay attention to where I put my districts because you couldn't change them.
- UI is an absolute mess with pop-up boxes constantly getting in the way of what I'm trying to click. And there's just too much blocking my view.
- Unit technology basically stops at WW2 era, which is pretty disappointing.
- Scouts can't attack, which is weird
- the interaction between aircraft carriers (which is ai defacto commander) and flight commanders is odd. You can group planes in a flight commander, but then a flight commander can group into an aircraft carrier, but then you can't use the planes in the flight commander's group?
- Really annoying how planes attached to an aircraft carrier are just constantly flying and buzzing about.
- The Crisis system, like the diplomacy, feels very half-baked. There needs to be more than just "citizen happiness number go down". Why doesn't the AI change during a crisis so that they're declaring more wars for resources like food and water. During a crisis, things also get more expensive; shouldn't that have an effect on the world? There's no worldwide consequences.
- They don't really give you a compelling reason to stop an alliance. Sure, they give you an option, but there's no real reason to stop an alliance in the game except for "I'm bored so I'm gonna take over the world and I need to drop this alliance"
All you had to do was address the pain points of Civ 6. A lot of Civ 6's foundational gameplay was great. It just had a lot of QOL pain points that were largely addressed in Civ 7. But then you introduced new, more foundational, problems. I guess I'll just look to mods to fix this or I may go back to Civ 6.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tContext: while many of the original negative reviews for Civ VII were from long-time users frustrated by the new game dynamics, I am new to the series. i decided to purchase when the major fix / update was released in early summer 2026, which addressed some of those concerns. I have played other turn-based games from Sid Meier before (Starship) but not CIV.
Overall I think CIV VII has a lot of interesting graphics and game dynamics to recommend it, but there are too many choice types / variables which affect how your empire progresses, that are buried in the UI / not easily discoverable as you start making your turns. And having tutorial reminders constantly popping up isn't a good solution either, because they become distracting after a while. One example of an opaque game dynamic is, even if you try to focus on developing science and core technologies (e.g. to help your military advance quickly), it's not clear how the AI empires, presumably forced to make the same kinds of trade-offs you are, can end up so far ahead (in a given category) in the same number of turns. it's almost like, even though it takes the human player 15-30 turns to develop a core tech or commerce ability, AI players somehow are able to develop those in fewer turns... and then, magnified over 200+ turns, ends up creating lopsided rankings across categories.
IMHO, the game would benefit from the option to turn off various kinds of cultural, environmental, and other impacts, so users can focus on the more intuitive dynamics of commerce, technology, and politics. While I'm sure if I played for 200+ hours, some of the obscure things would become more easily anticipated (via trial and error)... a player shouldn't need to play that long before gaining a decent overall understanding IMO. Don't get me wrong; there's many positive elements to the game, but taken as a whole series of dynamics, something doesn't feel right balance-wise.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI’m a long time fan of Civ games and to this day I still play Civ 6 so that being said I’m going to give my honest opinion on Civ 7, I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL. I first bought Civ 7 on console and it was a MAJOR disappointment compared to other Civ games and like most of you I left it alone and came back for the rest of time update this time on PC and it took all of 10 min of playing it to immediately uninstall and request a refund, The UI was and still is a hot mess, they completely changed the city states to the point where they are unrecognizable and the leaders are very lackluster in appearance and performance, the fact that it took them a little over a year to come out with an update to fix something that shouldn’t have never been broken to begin with is a prime example of the disconnect between the devs and the loyal fan base in my honest opinion Civ 7 should be abandoned altogether and full development should be put towards making Civ 8 using Civ 5 & 6 as a baseline and improving from there don’t waste your money on this game. It’s simply not worth it as a longtime fan and if your a first time civilization player, please do not let this game set the tone for what this franchise has been and still can be. Your money is better spent buying civilization six trust me you won’t be disappointed, but stay away from civilization seven it’s just not worth it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Eat s*** 2k games and Firaxis. You can make all the decisions you want for design/style but attacking consumers wallets is where I drop you as a long time Civilizations player since Warlords. I would recommend an older title like Civ 5 for people reading this, but I don't think Firaxis deserves their old games being bought either. If you want an expansive turn based strategy game, Endless Space Definitive Edition is $10 and a great entry to the series. The sequel Endless Space 2, is $40 and the base game is all you need. I like the terrain updates, especially navigable rivers. It's nice not to have to pour production into workers, especially in the early game. I like that civs and leaders aren't tied together, since it allows for more customization.
There are, of course, a good handful of smaller things I don't particularly like or am on the fence about. I really wish the game offered more flexibility in general. For example, reassigning citizens to tiles, resources to cities, and town focuses. There also doesn't seem to be a way to supply production and food to other cities, like you could with civ vi trade routes (although I haven't finished a game, so maybe I missed it). Game setup needs an option to modify the number of independent powers that spawn. The attribute system and mementos for leaders feels entirely too RPG-like and out of place in a Civ game.
But the single biggest thing that kills it for me - and it's such a basic part of the game that I don't know how this gets fixed - is the age system. I've only played after the test of time update, and by all accounts it made things better, but the problem runs deeper than the update reaches. I do not want to play three smaller games stacked in a trenchcoat. I do not want to have half of what I've done abruptly made irrelevant and be smacked in the face with a new ruleset. Not to mention the rules themselves - what sense does it make for a bunch of my resources to be suddenly worthless because they don't come from Far, Far Away?
I don't know for sure what they were trying to accomplish with the age system. I've heard various things, most of which I can get behind in principle. The ideas of civs evolving through time, of giving players that have fallen behind a chance to catch up, of trying to keep the late game interesting, are all fine and well in theory. I cannot recommend this game in its current state (and I am doubtful for future states). I intentionally waited to play this game until well over a year after its release, knowing patches and DLC will offer a more complete experience. That time has come and what should be a showcase of 35 years of lessons learned, AAA, refined experience plays like a mobile browser game.
I don't know how else to articulate this, the game feels dead. The art direction is bland and subdued. The exciting interplay that defined the Civ series is completely gone. You aren't managing anything important. You manage resources to manage resources to manage resources. There's no subtle increase in scope or the satisfaction of seeing your empire grow. I couldn't stomach even one game to be completely honest. This game feels like AI gave them all the ideas and they were like "hell yeah." It's just so lifeless of a game.
If you're considering a purchase stay away! Go read about on of the leaders in this game or do literally anything else. Your hopes for this game will turn to ash right on your screen.
