I'm not going to refund this off the strength of the passion and effort put into this by the solo dev and small team of two behind him. Unfortunately Samurai Ronin's Path is fundamentally flawed and marred by the sluggish nature of the combat. This bad boy is as stiff as Grandpa Sawyer on a Sunday afternoon. For a game that doesn't offer much in the way of story, such unresponsive controls are a deal breaker. The game offers a dodge, parry, and 3 combat stances, but you can easily play through the game in the default stance (it only takes about an hour). I will give praise for the dismemberment effects and some decent execution animations. Even without executing well on everything there is something to be said for the attempt. I'd recommend the morbidly curious to give this a spin. I am hopeful GameHunters will continue learning and creating games that reach their target audience.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

You travel through rural Chinese villages and coasts and castles and every so often, a group of enemies attack you. This might be all ninjas (very fast), pole fighters (long reach), guards (heavy armor), skeletons (good at swarming you), and so on, or it might be a mix. You're awarded one upgrade point after each level which improves various stats and skills. The combat is fast and fun if simple, with a lot of emphasis placed on dodging and parrying. You just can't hack your way through a half dozen enemies, you have to pick your spots while doing a lot of avoidance. There are also bosses who have special moves and weapons, as you'd expect.
There's not much of story nor is there any exploration or collection, just keep moving forward, fighting groups of enemies until you get to the boss. It's a missed opportunity not to have made this a score-based game with leaderboards, then it would be fun to replay the levels and compete with others. The graphics are limited but the character models are nice, a decent amount of thought went into their armor and weapons.

This reminds me of my favorite video games, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2, Champions of Norrath, Champions: Return to arms. Fighting in this game is good enough. The controls are sufficiently responsive. Usually the video games that are fun and don't require much thinking sell the best. Also, I think the devs are very aware of the value of their game and what people are willing to pay for a video game. I don't have to wait for a sale to buy this game. The combat kinda lacks that satisfaction of specially when the enemy is literally next to you but you can't seem to hit them as it doesn't target locks which is annoying. I love top down games and I can see the potential this game has. Maybe future updates will fix all the issues but kudos to the developer for this. Hopefully you can adapt sekiro combat or ghost of tsushima where killing enemies are full on satisfying.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The combat mechanics offer nothing beyond one button for attacking, one for dodging, and one for parrying. Parrying is not even worth using because the animation takes too long and does not look impressive in any way. You do not really need to dodge either, since you can simply move away using WASD. All you have to do is spam the attack button and hope the other enemies do not hit you. It does not matter if they attack you as a group, because you can parry several attacks at once, dodge them, or hit multiple enemies with a single attack. Enemies also drop health, so avoiding damage becomes optional as well.
To sum it up, a game whose main strength is supposed to be its combat — especially since one of the first things you see is a combat skill tree — ultimately boils down to clicking a single mouse button.

I could slash and jump forward...when it works. Anyways, when you kill those guys and move a screen forward you have the same. About 10 guys or more will attack you. I stopped here as it was enough. I understand that this is a one man show and thus i will not ask for a refund as I wish to encourage the creator to fix this and get better making games. This one is a good start. Good luck man. It's a shame the moveset doesn't change much and is poorly explained: there seem to be three ways to move from what I could tell, but as far as I'm concerned it's purely cosmetic — I didn't see any real difference in the gameplay itself. When you die, you respawn at the start of each new zone you've reached, not at the beginning of the level. As for the bosses, they're okay — nothing too complicated. Only the final one gives you a slight sense of challenge, and even then, barely.

Overall impression
The game itself isn't bad at all — it's a nice little indie title that'll keep you busy for about 60 minutes. That's a bit of a shame, because I think a lot of people will want a refund once they've finished it. Personally I wouldn't do that, because I did enjoy my time with it. Overall it's a decent little game, but in its current state I can't really recommend it — though I'm not going to trash it either. For €5, the experience is there; it holds up for about an hour. Whether it'll improve over time remains to be seen, and honestly I doubt it. If you're after a no-frills indie game and the price doesn't scare you, go for it. Visually it's pretty nice. There's sometimes a bit too much rough 3D, but for the price the game does the job. The ragdoll goes completely haywire on some dead enemies, but it's funny to watch. The menus get the job done, even if they're far from a genuinely polished, well-designed interface.Sound

Translation
The game offers several languages (not bad), and I tested two of them. The English is well translated. The French, however, is very shaky at times — I wonder if it was done with a machine translator or an AI. All in all, I liked this game. It's far from perfect, but I enjoyed my time with it. I really thought the sound design was a let down. Music is somewhere around "just okay" and I felt the audio for attacks could have been greatly improved to make the combat feel cooler/better. I also hate the sound that plays when enemies throw bombs, that one should just be scrapped and redone entirely. I found the heavy attack ability to be worthless. I don't think it's stacking with the 20% damage increase you can unlock so my light attacks seemed to have been doing slightly more damage than my heavy attack and the heavy attack is almost impossible to land reliably as far as I could tell. I thought the concept of the game was cool and it felt nice to play something like this. The devs seem to be actively updating the game and fixing player complaints which is great to see. I see a lot of reviews saying combat is clunky, but that was not experience. I think block/parry windows could maybe be extended by around ~0.1 seconds just to give you a little extra time to hit those, especially for players who are maybe not familiar with these sorts of games. For $5, I thought it was a fine game and don't regret my purchase.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

If you want a reason to buy this game? It's cheap, it's quick, and it has somewhat of a challenge to it. You have 14 levels comprising of 2-3 "arenas" where enemies will spawn in waves. You kill them, you move to the next arena, you get to the final area and there may or may not be a boss fight, then you complete the level and you gain a skill point to invest into an "okay" skill tree. Then, move onto the next level. The combat is also Assassin's Creed / Batman: Arkham style where they'll surround you and then flash yellow for a parryable attack and flash red for unblockable.
You will find MANY reasons to nitpick the game: the combat isn't super responsive (especially after dodging), both skills (Kunai and Power Attack) are completely useless because of no target lock on, there are no "invincible" frames after being hit so it's entirely possible to get stunlocked into a death. There are also "stances" you can switch with your mouse wheel but I have no idea what gameplay difference there was other than middle / lower stance couldn't hit (reach) anything, so I stayed up the "upper" stance the whole game. The boss fights are also quite easy, you'll have more problems with the wave of enemies ganging up on you. I even encountered a game-breaking bug during the second map where my character refused to attack until I died. The sound is pretty minimal as well: no voice-acting, sounds are generic, and I had to mute the music pretty much immediately.
I could go on, but it's a $5 game and I can honestly say I've spent far more on far worse games, and I feel like this was someone's pet project / attempt to learn how to make video games. Go into it with appropriate expectations and you might have just found a nice way to kill an hour.
