\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tTo celebrate 1000 hours in the game I decided to recommend officially. It's a perfect family coop. We came to it from Valheim after we hit 1800 hours and got tired of Mistland. Enshrouded feels much more balanced and the voxel based world is an amazing experience. It's beautifully and efficiently implemented and opens crazy opportunities, like digging your way through a rock just because. 1.0 is coming next month and we are looking forward to the new biomes and new toys. The co-op experience has easily been a 10/10 for me. You can have your own solo world, build and progress at your own pace, then take that same character into a completely different server and enjoy the game with friends without affecting your personal save.
I also really like how quests work in multiplayer. If your friends complete a quest while you're offline, you can still go back later since quest items and bosses respawn. You can complete it yourself, get the XP, and remove it from your quest log.
There are also plenty of optional side quests scattered throughout Embervale through NPCs and lore books. They give you more reasons to explore the cursed lands and discover places you might otherwise miss. Since many of these quests can be completed again, it also works really well for shared servers where someone might join late or miss something.
Overall, Enshrouded mixes survival, exploration, building, quests, and co-op really well. It's one of those games where you can easily lose a few hours without even noticing.

There is one thing that keeps me from playing anymore, when you mine a rock, cut down a tree, or pretty much any collection item in the game, you have to pick up every single item individually, Takes way more time to gather and its just immersion breaking and i can't express how much i hate that. For context, I play entirely with a controller, and honestly the controller experience makes a lot of these problems even worse.
The game crashes way too often for me. I'm running an RTX 4060 8GB with 16GB RAM and even after lowering the settings to Medium, I'm still getting crashes regularly. It's incredibly frustrating, especially when you're in the middle of exploring or a dungeon.
The auto-aim/lock-on system with a controller is probably my biggest issue with the combat. Try fighting a group of skeletons or a swarm of bugs and you'll understand immediately. The lock-on constantly picks or switches to enemies I don't want, and when you're surrounded, it feels like you're fighting the targeting system more than the actual enemies.
I've also had some really weird enemy behavior. There's some crocodile-like enemy in the swamp area that, after getting hit for the first time, randomly teleports around. I honestly don't know if this is intended or a bug, but it looks ridiculous.
A lot of basic interactions also feel unnecessarily slow on controller. Opening doors is slow, picking your stuff back up after dying is slow, meanwhile enemies can sometimes hit or clip through doors and other geometry.
And then there are the Hollow Halls. I don't mind difficult content — I actually like playing on high difficulty — but throwing a ridiculous number of enemies at you over and over again isn't interesting difficulty. Fighting another huge wave of skeletons just to open another seal gets old very quickly. Combine that with the controller lock-on constantly targeting the wrong enemy and it becomes tedious rather than challenging.
That's probably my biggest problem with the game overall: individually, some of these issues might be tolerable, but they compound. Awkward controller targeting + large enemy swarms + slow interactions + enemies clipping through things + crashes makes the experience way more frustrating than it needs to be.
There's a lot I genuinely like about Enshrouded. The world, exploration and building are great, which is exactly why these issues are so frustrating. The game has a really good foundation, but the controller experience, combat and technical issues are taking too much of the fun out of it for me.

The auto-aim/lock-on system with a controller is probably my biggest issue with the combat. Try fighting a group of skeletons or a swarm of bugs and you'll understand immediately. The lock-on constantly picks or switches to enemies I don't want, and when you're surrounded, it feels like you're fighting the targeting system more than the actual enemies.
I've also had some really weird enemy behavior. There's some crocodile-like enemy in the swamp area that, after getting hit for the first time, randomly teleports around. I honestly don't know if this is intended or a bug, but it looks ridiculous.
A lot of basic interactions also feel unnecessarily slow on controller. Opening doors is slow, picking your stuff back up after dying is slow, meanwhile enemies can sometimes hit or clip through doors and other geometry.
And then there are the Hollow Halls. I don't mind difficult content — I actually like playing on high difficulty — but throwing a ridiculous number of enemies at you over and over again isn't interesting difficulty. Fighting another huge wave of skeletons just to open another seal gets old very quickly. Combine that with the controller lock-on constantly targeting the wrong enemy and it becomes tedious rather than challenging.
That's probably my biggest problem with the game overall: individually, some of these issues might be tolerable, but they compound. Awkward controller targeting + large enemy swarms + slow interactions + enemies clipping through things + crashes makes the experience way more frustrating than it needs to be.
There's a lot I genuinely like about Enshrouded. The world, exploration and building are great, which is exactly why these issues are so frustrating. The game has a really good foundation, but the controller experience, combat and technical issues are taking too much of the fun out of it for me.

• A Bloated, Empty World: The map is way too big and overly ambitious, but it holds absolutely nothing of substance. It is completely filled with generic mobs and identical camps. I have wasted literal days exploring points of interest, only to leave frustrated because the exploration is never rewarding. The developers could have cut the map size in half and removed the filler, and it would have been a significantly better game.
• Terrible Progression: The progression system is deeply unsatisfying, the loot you find is garbage, and frankly, I could keep going on and on about the design flaws.
I am finally walking away. I played this game two years ago, and almost nothing meaningful has changed since then. Because of that, I have zero hope for the 1.0 release. A mountain of core bugs like this won't be fixed by launch, and a 1.0 label isn't going to magically fix a fundamentally broken game.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tEnshrouded reminds me of a mix between Zelda BOTW and Valheim. It has food buffs and building while also having gliders, spires, puzzles, and bombs. The exploration, combat, puzzles, and building have been great. I really like that there are 2 toolbars to swap between and tons of flexibility in key bindings. There are some very useful early skills in the talent tree such as Double Jump. I have died in the shroud a few times where I was unable to retrieve my gravestone before it disappeared, this can be slightly frustrating at times but I've gotten used to it. The gameplay is extremely fluid for weapon swaps and sprint to grappling hook. It never stutters and graphics look great on my old gaming rig. I'm only level 7, playing bow/dagger build and looking forward to leveling up more and exploring.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I didn’t get very far in Enshrouded but even early on, I was enjoying it enormously, for all the same reasons many others have outlined in their reviews: gorgeous vistas, fun combat—ranger especially tickles much of the same satisfaction as the classic stealth-archer builds of Skyrim, with a bigger power fantasy—and of course, the building system. All great, all created with obvious love and care.
However, there is one feature which has detracted quite enormously from my enjoyment of the game, and that is the way Enshrouded implements co-op. Going into this game, I’d read about how questing and exploration was server-wide, meaning whatever one person accomplished counted for the progression of all. In a friend group that’s lucky to get together more than once a month, this didn’t bode well. But I’d also read about the ‘missed quests’ feature, which would allow players to repeat quests completed by others for themselves. I thought maybe this wouldn’t be so bad, so when the topic of buying our own hosted server came up in the friend group, I agreed.
Unfortunately the missed quests feature has proven to be something of an albatross. It became a looming reminder of how far I’d fallen behind my friends, whose discoveries around the map continuously updated my own, populating my unexplored areas with POIs and quest icons. No longer am I running into a dark section of the map excitedly wondering if there will be something to find. Someone found it first ages ago, and now I have dozens of glaring “go this way” icons all over my map that are impossible to ignore every time I bring it up. Not to mention NPCs are now giving me quests that have nothing to do with anything I’ve personally done, or reference events I haven’t completed. [Update 9/18: after some further testing, it appears that my friends' POIs are no longer counting towards my own. When I initially joined the server, it added all that they had discovered to my prior exploration, but after recently comparing maps, the POIs they've discovered since have not added to my own. Not sure what the cause of this would be, but it is no longer accurate to my review, and I'm happy for it. The other issues remain however.]
So, I tried to just go off of the missed quests list itself. But this doesn’t work either. There’s no way to tell which part of the map each quest takes place in until you manually track it, and see “oh I haven’t been anywhere near there yet” and try the next. What’s worse, rather than being able to discover these quests for myself, it felt like I was just ticking items off a grocery list made by someone else. It quickly became extremely demotivating to even try, leading to me falling even further behind.
People have tried to tell me that the world is the main character of the game, not you the player, but I don’t care about being ‘the main character’. I care about the sense of discovery and exploration, which really drew me into Enshrouded at the start, and yet is bafflingly sacrificed if you want to enjoy the world with friends who aren’t glued to the hip 24/7. Everything in the world resets, so it seems especially strange to me that progression is tied to the server, when by all accounts these discoveries could be easily omitted for the ‘slower’ players to uncover on their own.
I know others with similar situations have decided that certain things, like bosses or puzzles, are to be saved for group play, but to me that’s not a viable solution either. I don’t want to play the game on eggshells worrying that such-and-such is off limits. I want to be able to explore what catches my eye, attempt challenges as I find them, and I don’t begrudge my friends for wanting to do the same. They shouldn’t have to feel guilty for playing at their own pace, and I shouldn’t have to feel like I’m failing for playing at mine. We just wanted a server where every so often we could come together on especially difficult challenges when our schedules aligned, and otherwise enjoy one another’s building progress at our respective altars, as we’ve done in similar games in the past. Don’t even get me started on how restricting NPCs to a single instance in the server has restricted the latter.
Ultimately, it seems this game just isn’t for groups like ours. I appreciate that the devs have tried to alleviate the issue with the missed quests feature, but as I’ve outlined, it just doesn’t work the way we need it to. Now I’m stuck in a position where I don’t want to continue on our shared server, but I also don’t have it in me to rebuild my base for a *third* time after I stripped it down on my original world to come to our hosted one. I’m not sure who even benefits from a system like this, except maybe people who hate questing altogether and are happy to miss out. It’s disappointing and a bit heartbreaking after enjoying the game so much at the start.
If ever the day comes where the devs change this system once again, to create an option for progression to be *truly* per-character instead of per-server, where POIs and quests remain utterly blacked out until *you* find them, I’ll welcome it with open arms and gladly adjust this review. Until then, I’m at an impasse, and can’t in good faith recommend this game to anyone looking to play in a group of working adults. Enjoy it solo or enjoy it with someone whose schedule perfectly mirrors your own; otherwise, you’re in for a rough ride. If this bloated wall of text is any indication, I really do care about Enshrouded passionately, and I personally will continue to follow its updates and hold out hope that something changes one day. Just that I liked this game for the same reasons I liked valheim as an engaging multiplayer experience. Definitely want to do another run once 1.0 drops. Really, it's pretty well done. Music, environments, "stuff to do together". Skills, equipment. Combat is fun, somewhat 'hard' but not hardcore.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It lacks the ability to build angled walls though, as you are locked into a building grid system. That does constrain build options but can be managed, and the wide options of building materials makes up for it in some ways.
Combat as a melee player build is decent and survivable. Playing as a mage is almost worthless early game - it gets better but that still sucks when you cannot be a good mage from the start.
NPCs you recruit are annoying. They wander away unless you set them to stand still. They dont do anything in the base other than wander, which is a shame because it doesnt feel alive.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI just switched Enshrouded to my favorite game on steam. This is such an amazing open world survival game and as a builder, there really isn't a better building system out there at least that I have played. This is still an EA game so some of the cons might get fixed or even already have a fix plan but as of right now, here is my pros/cons list:
PROS:
- As mentioned the BUILDING IS AMAZING! The system is so easy to use and has so many great features that make the building so easy once you get the hang of it. There are also SOOOO many building materials and furniture and decor etc.
- Kind of goes with building but the WATER system? Insane. It's so cool and I've never been able to create cool water features like you can in this game.
- Beautiful graphics.
- Expansive world map to explore with tons of hidden secrets.
- The skill web is also one of the best I have seen and you can really customize your build in a ton of different ways.
- The weapons system has a large variety of weapons and you can level them up.
- The Armor system is also great. You can level up your armor as well and make different combinations, and you CAN customize your appearance with the cosmetic clothes and toggling armor visibility on an off.
- TONS of quests, both main storyline and side quests, so there is always something to do whether it be questing or building
- I love the glider as a mode of transportation and how you can view the map so well
- Teleportation between bases and biome spires
- Ability to view and visit community builds
- You collect the NPCs from questing and then you house them at your base which I just think is so cool and especially as a builder, its nice to have more reason to build little houses and shops themed to match some of the NPC's (for ex. I'm planning to build a potion shop for the Alchemist to "run"!)
- The difficulty settings for the game are extremely customizable.
- Farming! There are tons of plants that you can farm and there are also animals that you can farm as well!
- CATS AND DOGS AND CAPYBARAS!
CONS:
- Can be a tad bit glitchy, but I haven't experienced anything game breaking
- The quest tracker isn't the most helpful. It can be tough to find things on the huge map and the tracking system doesn't show you the direction of the PATH to your objective, it only shows your distance from it. I have spent some time wandering around trying to find quest locations because the tracker also disappears once you are within a certain distance.
- The quests themselves can also get a bit repetitive. There are a TON of fetch quests and some of the other progression feature are also a bit repetitive. This doesn't really bother me though because I think the building and other really cool unique features make up for it (at least for me).
- While there is a ton of customization in terms of clothes and armor builds, I wish there was something similar for weapons because sometimes I'll find a new powerful weapon, but its really ugly and doesn't match my outfit which can be annoying.
- The fighting system could be a bit better, but I think an update is already planned for that.
- The crafting system is a lot. It can be overwhelming at first and admittedly, did turn me off the game a bit in the beginning. There are SO MANY different kind of crafting benches, workstations, furnaces, etc. and a lot of the NPCs are also connected to crafting and each one helps you craft different items. It can be tough to remember which crafting bench or which NPC you need to talk to to craft the item you need. If you're like me though, then you can just cheat and go to Shroud Depot (resource server).
- The NPC ai is a bit dumb. The creatures, humans, animals, and even bosses seem a bit off and get stuck on things.
My wishes:
- I am hoping for some kind of creative or sandbox mode in the future so I can just focus on building some cool stuff.
- I hope they add even more terrain materials, building blocks, and decorations.
- I hope they add a better quest tracking system
- I wish there was a way to "cure" the shroud. If not everywhere, then at least in some areas because I think that would add a lot more satisfaction as you traverse the game and complete quests and boss fights. And the shroud gets in the way of some cool building locations. ( I love building! )
Overall, I have been OBSESSED with this game and it'll definitely become my most played game very soon. If you like survival open world fantasy games, especially if you like building, this game is for you. I can't wait for 1.0 release!

But the problems are widespread and regularly interfere with the gameplay experience. The day/night cycle is manically fast; the debuffs are punishing, which would be fine, but how you acquire them isn't always clear; dungeon and open world map layout is bogglingly nonsensical; random lava pits dot the landscape and spell instant death; a dearth of fast travel spots means travel is laborious. Yes, there is plenty to do, and the graphics, sound, atmospherics are all well on their way. But it still needs work, and in the meantime there are other offerings within the genre to choose from that offer a more stable and rewarding experience.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
