\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game had some endgame shortcomings at launch, but Funcom has made great strides since then. The updates have addressed the bulk of the issues most players had at this point. There is something here for pretty much everyone. The game is getting better and better.

I'm eager to see the continued growth of the game. At this point I can't say that it has been anything but a value for my money spent.

If you like the Dune universe, survival, crafting, and base building, you should give the game a shot.

If you played at launch and stepped away, you should try the new content and end game loop. It has plenty of room to grow but it is now at a place that it should have been at launch.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tWhat can I say? Funcom does what Funcom always does. They have an EXCELLENT idea then absolutely can't manage to put it out in a coherent way. What is wrong with Dune, you might ask? You would think it would be near impossible to mess this up, but they've done it plenty before with other IPs. Secret World, Conan, pretty much everything they touch turns to dookie. Funcom is synonymous with the exact opposite of the Midas Touch.

They make this great Dune Survival game right? Single-Player? Nope. Multiplayer only. Fully Self-Hosted? Nope. Rather than have it set up like Conan Exiles where you can fully host your own server, some genius thought it was a great idea to have the servers linked by community areas that Funcom hosts. The only part you host is the "Hagga Basin" section. Everything else is on Funcom's servers. Which they like to consolidate when their playerbase falls off due to their idiotic choices. Take a few minutes and research what they did with The Secret World originally.

Let's talk about the gameplay a bit shall we? It's great. The story is great. Combat feels great. Even the grind for building isn't bad at all. You know what isn't great? Being forced into PVP situations in the "leveling areas" because things you need are only found in those PVP areas. 99.9% of the game is PVE, but certain quests and materials force you into PVP in every section of the map BEFORE you even get to the Deep Desert. It was so bad out there that Funcom had to literally revamp their design because of the level of griefing that was going on. Endgame? Easily manipulated by larger groups, at least in the beginning. I haven't played in months because of all of the garbage so I can't say what it is now.

This game would have been great as a Single Player game that had optional multiplayer. It would have been a great multiplayer game had you been able to fully host the entire gameserver yourself rather than having to rely on hubs. Now their player base has died so much that they're having to consolidate servers. It's the same "death of an MMO" that always happens. Huge population, dumb decisions lead to less population, forced migration. Eventually it'll get to a point where things are just shut down for good or the few remaining servers are put into "maintenance mode" and no further content will come of it.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI love this game. I think that the first 100 hours I played were amazing. I love arrakis, I love driving my sandbike, flying my ornithopter, even grinding out resources to build new and cool and fun things. The main story interested and excited me. I made friends in my house. I did pvp and pve and achievement hunted. I spent long nights spicing in my sandcrawler, "Wurmy Wurmington." I had so much fun in this game.
However...
A time gated endgame, via specialization, which requires 350 days to max out a single character, and a hellish dungeon system which doesn't allow for playstyle choice has ruined this game for me. I enjoy 99% of the pve and pvp content in this game. However, the endgame system that is now in place dis-incentives me from playing it.

In order to play pvp, I would either have to play at a disadvantage that would be extreme to overcome, or grind out hours upon hours upon days of dungeon runs, in which the enemies do enough damage to one-shot me through my shields in hopes to maybe obtain the schematic to make a weapon or piece of armor, while at the same time having to manage the durability on weapons and armor I am using in order to get good equipment. The game limits the playstyle of the player in this instance to "just don't get hit...." As you go up in difficulty, enemies health becomes what feels like 10 to 20 times my own, just for the unshielded grunt who normally dies in a few hits. In addition, the amount of lag that you experience makes this grind unbelievably frustrating. Abilities will often fail to activate in stressful situations, and that will often get you killed. Enemies will shoot you behind cover, and that will get you killed.
I wouldn't mind this too much, if the boss, or the dungeon was fun. But they aren't. The same level of love and care put into the early parts of this game don't materialize there.
I also wouldn't mind this if I could play this game with friends, but the dungeons penalize me for doing so.
Both the boss enemies and regular enemies health scale with the number of players. The number of regular enemies also goes up.
Each boss arena is essential the same. As is each fight. Kite the boss around the room. When he is slowed, or in an animation where he cannot punish you, and the environment can't punish you, fire a few darts into him. Then avoid the environment until you have another chance. All of these boss arenas are circular rooms with no cover and little to no creativity in the design of their environment. Fighting any of them is not fun past the 2nd or maybe third attempt.\t\t\t\t\t

As someone who has been PvE-oriented and has put well over 1,100 hours into the game since beta and launch across multiple characters, I am disappointed. After the recent success of Arc Raiders, I figured they would have at least leaned more into the PvPvE aspects.. I would have gladly engaged with that because, in Arc, it pushed me toward PvP when I wanted and made me seek it out.
Every game has its problems i get that, but since launch we have not had a fixed Crysknife because we have been searching for the Fremen we cannot find due to a drip fed storyline and unresolved bugs they have struggled to fix and stick to deadlines while also releasing updates that are purely cosmetic. You're supposed to ignore the fact that most character model clothing has broken textures in some way shape or form all while having a terrible transmog system they're so proud of having (cant remove capes or cloaks and everything is just an uglier recolor all unique armors dont have cool variants just like i said uglier recolors) even if you ignore the goofy ass knife holstering position and random skills not working even if you could ignore all that they give us a roadmap that leads to failed promises and half-hearted expectations. The overall paid content has been lackluster and obvious they rushed what they could to fulfill steams contract I mean hell with the past couple updates, they have talked about server migration because they have lost a massive number of players due to these shortcomings, yet they still cannot deliver that in a reasonable timeframe. This update was promised as something huge for a part of the community I am not even involved in, but I was excited to engage with it. fallout season 2 released and fallout 76 gained a massive spike in players the way is see it with Dune Part 3 coming later this year this game has one more chance of bringing in players that are interested in the ip and with your recent updates and decisions albeit in good faith you're not going to keep them or us much longer. Hopefully the new law passes where online games are forced to create an offline mode or refund because as a single player game this game would kick ass perfect 10/10 dune game and hopefully console isn't as plagued with as many performance issues as has been the case\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tOne word: Impressed. From the general comments one comes across in gaming news and reviews I was given the overall impression that Dune Awakening is nothing special. Being a fan of Dune I decided to take the leap and buy it. Well, the game started off pretty well and just got better and better as I progressed. Visually very nice on the eyes, good lighting and textures. Crafting, resource gathering, survival, storyline/missions all do a good job individually but when combined makes for a very pleasurable experience. Combat is surprisingly fun both ranged and up-close. Now, it's far from perfect. There are issues with storyline and side quests being out of sync. I killed a main character in a side quest and then came back a day or two later with the main storyline quest to kill that same character. Another example, where I killed another main character then had side quests to investigate that characters faction like I had not come across them or the leader before. In all other games I have played there is a simple "restriction" put in place to prevent mission/quests being given out to ensure correct timeline syncronisation. Cut scenes where the character talking didn't have any mouth animation and when you have to watching them "talk" to you for more than a few seconds, it can become annoying. Oh wait.... were they Bene gesserit and using telepathy? (I jest, they were not!) Some game annoyances like getting stuck on your ornithopter while exiting it. Those wing blades are very troublesome. Oh and what's with vehicles not taking any damage!?! So what seems quite basic features and mechanics that failed or did a poor job does let the side down if you let them. Especially when other games nail those features and systems and have proven to work for many games over decades! Then there's aspects of the game where attention to detail is impressive such as the deathstill animation and game world planning and creation. Oh and I love the desert mouse that pops up randomly (soooo cute!). Overall, a very good game and I look forward to playing another 400+ hours.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tDune: Awakening is a very fun resource gathering & base building survival game with light RPG mechanics for the first 50 or so hours, and you can absolutely get your money's worth if you're not expecting something with long legs. Unfortunately, Funcom launched Awakening before ironing out the endgame, which was a promising but unrefined sandbox PvP experience, for which most players were unprepared, because Funcom didn't bother to ease players into the PvP gameplay for that first 50 or so hours. This resulted in a heavily PvE-oriented fanbase who resented the PvP endgame and felt blindsided by it, despite the developers being entirely candid about what they should expect after finishing Hagga Basin.

Now, after a relentless deluge of review bombs and anti-PvP complaining on social media over the last year, Funcom's managers have overruled the game's creative director and completely sidelined the PvP endgame - even going so far as to strip out the small handful of PvP instances that could be found in the early game zones. The end result is a completely vacuous endgame where players will quickly accumulate the highest tier of resources without any challenge or thought, even relative to the game's tutorial zone, because Dune's high level play-space is a huge open desert that was designed from the ground up to be a high risk, high reward PvP zone. Additionally, there is no practical point to accumulating these resources because the game's braindead NPC enemies were already extremely easy, even with low tier gear that is readily acquirable in Hagga Basin.

This has also led to second order consequences for every other developmental, social, and economic aspect of the game. There was an entire third player faction planned that was supposed to balance the preexisting two in PvP, which has likely been abandoned or subjected to an extremely lengthy refactoring by the devs. The game's RPG mechanics and buildcrafting were largely designed with PvP in mind, which has left them more or less cosmetic where the extremely limited PvE combat is concerned. The complete overflow of endgame materials and items has left the game's market system, which was also unrefined but promising, completely vestigial. The removal of PvP has also enabled players to grief each other with absolutely zero consequences, because another player can just sprint up and steal any resource you're gathering, and you will have no means of retaliating or stopping them. The game has a guild system, but there's no social incentive to form or join one, because there's no content that requires or even encourages multiplayer, now.

There are several other examples that I can't reasonably fit in this review without it becoming an unwieldy wall of text. This game was originally intended to be an MMO-lite, mind you. These issues extend a little beyond the scope of PvE vs PvP and speak more to how people want multiplayer games to heavily cater to individuals who much prefer singleplayer experiences, but I digress. In essence, it's not that the endgame is bad - it's that the developers have removed and invalidated it entirely. The game's entire gameplay loop was upended due to the relentless demands of complaining redditors, who are now the game's main demographic. So what's the tradeoff for this change of developer priorities?

Well, the substitute for that endgame is intended to be a series of extremely buggy and repetitive linear dungeons full of janky bullet sponge bosses, which are by far the least entertaining part of the game's PvE content. The reward for clearing these dungeons and bosses is the same high tier gear you can get for free in the Deep Desert. It's sincerely pointless and boring, which is why the game isn't retaining its PvE players even after the developers caved on their own vision and handed them exactly what they asked for. Funcom is now in a situation where they have to keep pace with a highly demanding PvE audience, which requires a level of development that is orders of magnitude higher and more resource intensive than a PvP sandbox experience demands. For a team of Funcom's size and agility, I don't expect them to deliver satisfying results. Any solid content that comes after this point will still be throwing good design choices after bad, because there's a massive swath of this game's content that fundamentally doesn't work anymore. They could go back and redesign all of it, but that's time and resources they could be spending on new content instead.

This is a spiritually compromised game led by bean counting managers who have overruled their own creative staff at the behest of a loud, anti-art audience that resented what the game was trying to accomplish in the first place. Instead of locking in and further developing the aspects that made Dune: Awakening a unique and enjoyable experience for the audience who actually liked what it had to offer in the long term, it is now a confused and meandering experience that has completely spurned its most dedicated fans in an attempt to court an invisible legion of anti-PvP crusaders who have not returned to play, because as far as PvE exclusive experiences go, there are simply dozens of more robust and entertaining alternatives at any given time.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI don't typically take the time to review games but I felt I needed to speak up for Dune Awakening. I've had it since the beginning and absolutely LOVED the first 90% of the game. There were problems here and there and there have been bugs and changes I didn't agree with. However, and this is a BIG however, Funcom has been listening to the players and has been making positive changes to address our concerns. They have been releasing regular updates and have been actively trying to make the game better for the players, based on community feedback. PVP and PVE are now separate from each other. You don't have to engage with other players if you don't want to. They've also been adding new content. Because of these changes, I'm looking forward to starting again and this time, loving 100% of the game. This is also why I'll be picking up a couple more copies for family members so we can play together.

Suffice it to say, If you are looking for a fantastic survival/crafting/RPG-lite game, set in the dune universe, don't let the negative reviews steer you away from this game. It really is a very enjoyable, immersive game. It can be exciting and it can be super chill if you want it to be. Although, there's nothing like having that worm run you down for the first time, or seeing your first spice bloom up close! Exploring all around the dune universe gathering materials, fighting NPCs, building a sweet base, it all works so well. As someone who loves a good PVE environment, I highly recommend this game. Don't let the negative reviews keep you from enjoying your own dune adventure.\t\t\t\t\t

Ping continually fluctuates all over the place when in-game. I have been informed by other players that this is a confirmed feature of the game.


Early game combat feels horrible: (hopefully combat gets better as game proceeds)

Because of fluctuating ping times and rubber banding, enemies close gap and stun you before you can switch from ranged weapon to melee weapon. Not sure if parry is available on ranged weapons, but the gap closers enemies perform early game always stun my character and not being able to parry an attack with the ranged weapon makes it kinda useless early game.

BUGS- I literally have 4 hours played and have had to go to the reddit forums already to find out why the Blood Purifier doesn't show up in the construction menu after you research it. After a full year of release you would think a minor bug like this would have been fixed. (Spoiler Alert- you need to log out an log back in after researching the Blood Purifier, to have it show in your construction menu)

Server Migration:

New players were allowed to create characters on servers that were closing! I am not sure why I was allowed to create a Character on a server that is shutting down in 7 days. I am not even sure where to find out what servers are remaining open. Someone posted a list in Discord, but I don't have permission to view the channel for some odd reason, even though I am fully verified in discord.

I am being warned after 4 hours of game time that I need to put all my items in my bags and use some kind of tool to save my base. At my level, I don't see an option to create the tool that saves my base and my inventory is way to small to carry the materials I have gathered already. So it looks like I will be starting over in 7 days. Not a huge deal since I just started, but this kind of new player experience is terrible imo.

If you love simple bugs a full year after release and you don't mind game breaking rubber banding every 5 minutes of game time, then this is the game for you.

After spending 3 hours preparing for and transferring my character to a new server, the land where my base was previously, is occupied in the new server/sietch. I am not going to waste anymore time dealing with game as a repercussion of a forced migration. Plenty of other games coming out to put my time into. Good luck to everyone else.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI have over 4,000 hours in Dune: Awakening, so this review isn’t coming from someone who barely touched the game. I genuinely loved this game during beta and early launch. Some of the best gaming experiences I’ve had came from the original vision of the Deep Desert and the largescale PvP conflicts over spice, loot, testing stations, and territory control. That’s why it’s frustrating watching the game slowly walk away from the identity that made it special in the first place.

At launch, the game had a massive amount of bugs and server issues. Instead of quickly stabilizing things, the developers went on an extended vacation period while many major problems remained unresolved. Right out of the gate, a large portion of players stopped playing because core systems were broken, exploits existed everywhere, and communication felt minimal.

The DD originally felt dangerous&meaningful. It wasnt supposed to be a safe PvE farming zone. It was supposed to be brutal. . If your vehicle got eaten, it was gone. That risk created adrenaline&made players actually value their equipment &decisions. Now there’s a recovery option lets you recover vehicles for a small amount of Solari, which completely removes a huge part of the tension&consequence that originally made the desert feel dangerous.

Some of the best moments in the game were intense fights over a single chest in a testing station.I understand why people wanted instant loot, but it completely removed the tension&value behind controlling loot. Supply and demand mattered before. Once everyone has everything, the excitement dies.

The Landsraad rework was another major turning point. I understand why some people disliked the old system because players with more free time had advantages, but the replacement system turned progression into repetitive chores instead of organic gameplay. Then specializations were introduced with daily and weekly caps. Instead of grinding because the game was fun, players were logging in just to complete mandatory checklists before logging off again. Missing a day meant falling behind.

The PvE testing stations outside the Deep Desert only made things worse. They were introduced partly because players were exploiting the original stations by glitching under the map to loot rooms. The problem is those exploits STILL exist in the newer stations almost a year later. Duping still exists. Augment reroll exploits still exist. Players are still finding ways to break encounters and manipulate scaling systems.

Group scaling also felt poorly balanced. In many situations it became more efficient to run content solo because larger groups caused enemy health and damage to scale disproportionately compared to rewards. Players even figured out ways to manipulate the system into thinking only one player was present because grouping normally often felt inefficient.

What frustrates me most is that it feels like the developers abandoned the original identity of the game to cater to the loudest minority of complaints instead of the core systems that originally attracted players. Dune was never designed to be a solo friendly endgame experience. The game was built around guild politics, large scale fights, dangerous PvP.

You can even see it reflected in the player numbers. Every major update that reduced PvP tension or weakened conflict-driven gameplay seemed to coincide with more players leaving. Meanwhile, long awaited content like Water Wars ended up feeling underwhelming compared to what many players expected more cosmetics and building pieces instead of meaningful PvP evolution.

There’s still an incredible game buried underneath all of this. The atmosphere, world design, and original vision were amazing. But after nearly a year, too many core issues remain unresolved, and too many design decisions have pushed the game away from what made it unique in the first place.

Endgame is where things slow down and it seems like the developers can't make up their mind on what to do with the game. Originally and still according to game trailers it was 'natural' pvp (which doesn't happen) and confused a fun experience with high end players ganking low level ones new to the deep desert. Harvesting spice for no other reason then harvesting more spice. Chapter 4 better address all these problems or this game will not be lasting beyond a year or two.\t\t\t\t\t
