There is a lot of content for new players to engage with, just be prepared for your fun to get ruined by literally anything, not necessarily other players. If you do want to buy this game, make sure to have a friend in your crew to share the highs and lows with - solo slooping can be a challenge even for veteran pirates. Treat the following wall of text as a warning a la "abandon hope all ye who enter here" - don't expect to always be able to have your cake and eat it too, especially as a new player. PvP may be in a weird spot right now, but it's still a core part of the game - just remember that you can often choose whether to interact with it and how. Awareness will be your best defense, but you'll have to get used to sticking your head up and out to the horizon like a paranoid meerkat.

The visuals are great if you're able to max out the settings and certainly add to the atmosphere of the game. Unfortunately the devs had chosen to stay on an ancient version of UE4 because reasons. Whatever "2026 edition" is supposed to mean, it's got absolutely nothing to do with the technical aspects of the game - no modern graphical features are available; I guess the only thing it has in common with modern AAA titles in that sense is the install size.
But back to the good: the character design is a masterpiece of comedy if you nail the right pirate appearance. The faces they can have, the way they can walk or crouch, the expressions they make in emotes is a big part of why I still enjoy SoT. IMO you're better off looking and dressing like some stupid mental asylum reject than going for a more serious or grounded look - it's guaranteed to get at least a chuckle from most of the people you meet.
The audio aspect is more straightforward. The music is fantastic, the sound effects are nicely made. In fact, here's a bonus - if you enable text to speech in the game's settings (might also have to dig around in xbox settings as well) and pick some wacky TTS voice, you can have a lot of fun with whatever gibberish it says from what you type in chat. You can't hear your own, so have a friend in your crew stream their game back to you (they probably need to have TTS enabled too).
At the end of the day, the game is founded on player interactions and the situations that come out of it. It's not called Sea of Thieves for nothing - be mischievous, take risks, have a bit of a laugh at someone else's expense. It's these kinds of situations that end up becoming memorable feats.
Unfortunately this is where my platitudes end. Time to get to the real reasons for the negative review. There are two sides of this coin - the state of the game and the development process.
Your first clue for the technical state should be the aforementioned install size. Over the years it had gotten bloated from ~30 gigs all the way to 140. This is thanks to the ridiculous amount of cosmetics, plus the tall tale assets (the game's campaign mode), coupled with a lack of effort on Rare's part to optimise the install size actively or retroactively. As such, if you're not interested in said tall tales or owning dozens of wardrobes worth of dresses, the game will happily waste your disk space whilst you only really interact with 20-30% of its size.
The gameplay itself is riddled with bugs, inconsistencies and oversights. The servers are sluggish and unstable, with high overhead and lag spikes on a regular basis. This alone creates a whole spectrum of gameplay issues, including SoT's infamous "9/10" hit registration (it's more like a 50/50 dice roll), backspawning, long loading times, broken captaincy books, bugged inventories, unharpoonable loot, occasional disconnects and more. How they function in general is still a mystery to me because, for example, even though the game has servers in both Europe and North America, it's still entirely possible to encounter an American whilst playing from Europe or vice versa. If you dive to a quest, the game will try to put you in a different instance with other people, and if it succeeds, you might just find yourself in a server full of hourglass players. This is a PvP mode where participants dive directly to each other to fight. Since the game doesn't create dedicated hourglass instances and just mixes the participants with the rest of the people, you might find yourself surrounded by sweaty or at least PvP-interested players, some of which might stay on the instance after their fights are finished.
The existence of hourglass itself is a symptom of how Rare have been treating the concept of PvP in the game. In its early years, a good balance was struck in its design - PvP was less of an activity and more of an intrinsic risk involved in doing just about anything, but especially world events. A massive glowing beacon in the sky is an invitation not just for you, but for everyone else on the server. Most importantly, you'd always have the opportunity to choose whether to engage with it, based on your circumstances. Do I already have a lot of treasure onboard? Are there any players near the event or actively doing it? Are they new or experienced? Should I sneak onboard, roll in guns blazing or just leave? Questions like this are what is supposed to shape your choices and your adventure, driven by risk, reward and uncertainty created by the activity of other crews. But apparently it's not something new or highly casual people could handle, so Rare in their infinite wisdom have sought to throw this balance off completely by introducing a gamemode with PvP only (hourglass), a gamemode with no PvP whatsoever (safer seas), events with forced PvP (such as the skull of siren song), and as the cherry on top, diving anywhere at anytime with effectively no cost.
Diving itself is a very problematic mechanic. It was introduced in line with Rare's misguided philosophy of trying to cater to new players as much as possible. On paper the idea appears good - a smoother learning curve and a faster way to start off your adventure. But as with many other features, it was implemented carelessly, its costs never considered. The game's core design encourages and thrives on player interactions which need time to happen, but since diving lets you change servers the moment things start to feel boring or inconvenient, it effectively has every server reset itself continuously, which paradoxically makes them feel even more empty and boring. People who stay and commit are not rewarded, and people who disengage are not punished.
I could go on for a while like this listing the bugs and mistakes alone, but let's move on to the development process. Today's Rare has nothing in common with the Rare that once released legendary titles like Battletoads or GoldenEye 007. Any sort of competency has gone out the window. The inability to properly schedule and distribute workloads has given rise to technical debt, missed deadlines, failed events, a sharp drop in content amount and quality, meaningless FOMO slop, dramas within the community and an all-time low player trust in general. A number of incidents such as the recent bruno thing or the doubloon reset reveal the utter lack of respect the devs have for their players, both the new ones they apparently were trying to please so hard, and the old ones that had been supporting them and playing their game ever since its release. This has gotten so bad that their admitting to "missing the mark" with almost every dev update for the last several years has solidified itself as the meme within the community.
Leave it to Rare to hit a new bottom every single time they try to deliver content or even just open their mouths.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

However, overall, this game is lacking in so many different ways. The anti-cheat is non-existent; I have run into so many cheaters recently using numerous types of hacks, including auto-rep, item spawning, teleporting, and aimbot. The game has been out for eight years, yet it feels like all the developers do is add a bunch of random, useless features that nobody asked for. They haven't improved the quality of life or met expectations. It really feels like this game will never make meaningful improvements for its players, which is sad because it had, and still has, so much potential. Overall, I don't recommend getting hooked on this game since it really isn't worth it compared to other fun games to play with friends—unless the developers finally take a look at their game and rethink their approach.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Nobody who seeks out to do PVP cares about PVP, they are sadist who enjoy watching people suffer. Imagine going to work for 4 hours and then a random person comes up and takes your pay. Repeat for almost every playthrough ad nauseam. This has been one of the best pirate games to this date that has fun events and a simple/enjoyable combat system, but is ruined by devs who will not create a non-♥♥♥♥ PvE mode. Of course the PvP tards will attack you for advocating for a PvE only style gameplay because they never want to attack others who want to PvP. They only want to target those who do not want to engage in PvP for an easy fight. I am sure countless people would actually play this game again if they could just do the content with their friends without being harassed.

The only game in which you can be spawn camped by the NPCs and lose several hours of your life and have nothing to show for it. And a note to Rare GIVE NPC SHIPS A SPAWN COOL DOWN!!! AND YES I AM SALTY! The fact the game can just decide to kill you on a whim is not good game design. Or dying to the first volley of cannon fire and by the time you respawn your ship is already gone. I get it if it was from another player sneaking up on you, but if you're on an island and you get tag-teamed by two NPC ships... Is there any system in game to track what it throws at players, or does it just target at random? And yet I keep coming back to this game like an abusive partner, even though it does not respect my time in any way, shape, or form. I have 170+ hours in this game. At what point is it no longer a skill issue? Other players have given me far less trouble than the game itself. I am terrible at PVP, yet somehow I still find it easier than PVE ship combat. For context, while ik it says I've only played for 24 hours, thats only on my steam account. Originally I started playing all the way back in 2018 for week one on my xbox 1 and have played relatively consistently since then, even swapping to the xbox series x just so I could continue to play the game. I swapped over to steam not too long ago after I cancelled my gamepass subscription. Needless to say, I've spent well over a thousand hours on this game.
This game used to genuinely be my favorite and was so for years. I remember how chaotic it was when the game had just first came out. The community was trying to figure out which voyages were the funnest, the best ways to beat skeleton forts, and how to PvP properly. While it was pretty boring up until about the first anniversary update when new food types were added, tall tales became a thing, arena (rip) was added which all made the game super multifaceted, I still really enjoyed the first year. I remember when we first got the megalodon in the first ever major update and you had to summon it but only by cooperating with other pirate crews. I remember when cursed sails added new npc ships you could fight in the world. I remember when the rare did what seemed like the impossible and added a whole new region with the devil's roar, a volcano-themed region that was more unforgiving but had much better and unique loot that then original three regions.
I talk about the first year of the game because sot had a rough launch. People would play, find it boring, and leave. Only some players stayed around outside of the major updates before the anniversary update came out. But SoT survived because the beating heart of this game is its dedicated community. This feels relevant now because here we are 8 years later and it feels dead again, but now not even the updates feel like they bring life back into the game. Back in 2018, it felt like the game was ambitious and loved by its developers, and I still somewhat believe rare still cares, but it also feels like back then they actually knew their community but now they feel out of touch. Year 1 and most of the years following, it felt like rare really understood that there was a symbiotic relationship between those who mained PvE and PvP. In other words, you had people who primarily preferred doing voyages and just kind of doing their own thing on the seas (like me) and people who preferred to play the game mostly by fighting others or focusing on world events (events where rather than just one crew being able to participate like regular voyages, all crews can hone in on the specific event and fight together or against one another for relatively good loot). Rare was really good at balancing rewarding both communities with good updates while not isolating one from the other to maintain a good community balance. I mean sure, you had the Arena which was a PvP-exclusive gamemode, but unlike modern PvP updates it still prioritzed team work (originally only galleons were allowed in the Arena, which meant you and to cooperate with 3 other crew members to win against the other ships in the match) and also the Anniversary Update as previously mentioned still had plenty of goodies for the main open world gamemode, like fishing, cooking, and the tall tales which were more PvE oriented. Another example was the emissary update, an overhaul to the trading companies (the people who you get and do voyages for) which added more incentives like earnable experience and gold multipliers that made the grind for Pirate Legend (the game's "end game" reward) easier to help boost the PvE side, but also added the Reaper's Bones, a PvP-oriented (but not exclusive) faction that was incentivized to hunt down and plunder the PvE crowd. It overall was an organic way of keeping both groups in contact. Rare has done this plenty of times over, making updates that reward both crowds to both do their own thing and to organically interact with each other.
All of this made the community bustling for years. Sure, you had some toxic folk, but generally both sides lived in an effective harmony. PvE players would grind the game by doing voyages. Voyages created loot like chests which would circulate in the game. Loot incentivized PvP players to strategically attack PvE players for their loot so they instead could profit, or to form an alliance with and protect PvE players so they could get a share of the money earned. If the PvE player lost their things, then they would go back and fight the PvP players after respawning, or vice versa if the PvE player won and was able to cash their loot in. In either case, it made a healthy ecosystem where there existed opportunities for both groups to have fun in their respective way, but also in one which meant both groups were still interacting, making for one big and cohesive community. This created fun, awesome stories that make up the back bone of SoT.
That was until updates started isolating the two groups. Sea of Thieves would start adding more Tall Tales without any incentive for PvP to happen organically, which meant part of the PvE community would stop interacting with the PvP community. On the flip side, updates created more world events that exclusively focused on the PvP aspect of the game, meaning that most PvE players would stop doing world events, leading to less interaction. Ultimately, SoT added both diving and replaced Arena mode with hourglass, which were like gamemodes within the main open seas world where the former allowed you teleport to voyages automatically if your were a PvE player and the later would automatically teleport you to someone who wanted PvP if thats what you desired. Not to mention, both teleported you to new servers rather than keeping you on the same one the whole time. What this created were exclusive missions of sorts that all but ensured that you would no longer organically interact with the other community except for in isolated cases. Now I'm not necessarily saying that both updates killed the game, after all they certainly are time savers which means you can get more missions/fights into a single play session than before, but the reality is that the time cut out was the time where either community could organically interact since you're teleporting to events, not sailing to them.
Don't get me wrong, as a PvE main I love being able to dive. Means I can get more money and reputation (experience) an hour than ever before, but it means that I almost never get into PvP interactions anymore unless I go out of my way to do so, which defeats the purpose of emergent encounters with other players that make those awesome stories.
The final nail in the coffin for me is that the game does get updated still, but unlike maybe four years ago when each update was fun and refreshing, recent updates (so like the past 2 or 3 years) have been nothing short of underwhelming. The developer team keeps running into problems which means that updates get pushed back ridiculously far, content is cut, or otherwise regular content updates get replaced with bug fixes. What this has created is a community expectation of underperformance. In other words, I don't look forward to updates anymore because I always assume they'll flop in some way. This has outright killed the community.
TL;DR, sorry for the rant. I've had years to think about this and I finally wanted to leave a review. Stunning graphics, potential for a fun time, but the community feels dead and the new content feels lackluster. Plenty of content in the game for those who want to try it out, but the lack of a community will make it boring fast. I have hopes that this game can get back on track, but I right now I can't in good faith recommend playing it, especially for the price it's at right now. Originally I started playing all the way back in 2018 for week one on my xbox 1 and have played relatively consistently since then, even swapping to the xbox series x just so I could continue to play the game. I swapped over to steam not too long ago after I cancelled my gamepass subscription. Needless to say, I've spent well over a thousand hours on this game.
This game used to genuinely be my favorite and was so for years. I remember how chaotic it was when the game had just first came out. The community was trying to figure out which voyages were the funnest, the best ways to beat skeleton forts, and how to PvP properly. While it was pretty boring up until about the first anniversary update when new food types were added, tall tales became a thing, arena (rip) was added which all made the game super multifaceted, I still really enjoyed the first year. I remember when we first got the megalodon in the first ever major update and you had to summon it but only by cooperating with other pirate crews. I remember when cursed sails added new npc ships you could fight in the world. I remember when the rare did what seemed like the impossible and added a whole new region with the devil's roar, a volcano-themed region that was more unforgiving but had much better and unique loot that then original three regions.
I talk about the first year of the game because sot had a rough launch. People would play, find it boring, and leave. Only some players stayed around outside of the major updates before the anniversary update came out. But SoT survived because the beating heart of this game is its dedicated community. This feels relevant now because here we are 8 years later and it feels dead again, but now not even the updates feel like they bring life back into the game. Back in 2018, it felt like the game was ambitious and loved by its developers, and I still somewhat believe rare still cares, but it also feels like back then they actually knew their community but now they feel out of touch. Year 1 and most of the years following, it felt like rare really understood that there was a symbiotic relationship between those who mained PvE and PvP. I played this game back in the beta days and at launch. I probably soaked up at least 500+ hours into it when it was new. Took a long hiatus from it when the sweats and exploiters started to show up. Recently got back on after seeing that the game was all but dead at this point and i can tell you first hand that it is far worse than it was in the beginning.
The PVE activities are a blast, but the community of players that still populate this game are by far the most annoying and aggressive player base I've had the displeasure of running across.
If you're new to the game, DO NOT expect any help from other players.
Open crew? - Odds are you'll be joined by someone who will sink your ship and leave.
Find another ship? - They'll sink you on sight.
Want to play casually and grind peacefully? - You will be hunted down and griefed.
The game offers a PVE mode that limits your ability to progress and fully explore the Emissaries and basically tries strong arming you into joining the parasitic cesspool of High Seas.
The game wants you to spend hours on end grinding your heart out just for all of it to be taken away in 30 seconds by a team who plays the game like a 9-5 job and only exist to cause you torment.
The game is thankfully dying fast and hopefully Rare does the right thing and takes restrictions off the PVE game mode and allows the casual audience to finally be able to enjoy the game. It may not save them, but it would at least stop the bleeding.

I love locking my friends in the brig when they drink too much grog. Also Sea of thieves is so much bigger than you would think. This game as so many frustrating bugs, map design flaws, and overall just thoughtless design. Rare support however is completely awful and worthless, will not help you if you lose any sum of money. I did a sell that was worth several hours of accrued loot from ashen garrisons and banished vaults. The game didn't account for a single piece of it, and after contacting support they said "we don't see anything." If you play this game, have it recording at all times in case this happens, because it will, its happened multiple times, but this time was my last straw.
The combat is fun, and the enemies are unique, albeit, the emergent enemies from the Pirates of the Caribbean that spawn are obnoxious. It is nice they at least drop gems somewhat commonly.
However, the game also suffers from numerous frusteratingly terrible design and direction choices. Some examples are their removal of emergent ashen guardians, making several achievements significantly more difficult, such as "my cup runneth over." The ashen garrisons loot pool room is horrendoustly and brainlessly designed with how it works with rowboats, something that it clearly is designed to do as it has a rowboat dock for loot. It constantly gets stuck in that room because apparently in Rare's opinion, you can't row a rowboat in reverse.
For the bugs, as mentioned, the selling issue is far more common than it has any reason to be, and Support is completely worthless on helping you. Ashen garrison outer gates have a bug that doesn't allow you to get out of the gate in a rowboat despite it being down there is still collision stopping your egress. There are numerous other small bugs that, when put together really create a negative experience.
The game severely punishes you for wanting to play without players, and while I do agree that it should be less money, they really make it pretty much not worth playing for anything other than tall tales. They could have easily just quadroupled emergent ship, megaladon, or kraken spawns to account for this, allowing a more intensive experience, but I guess that would just make too much sense.
