Yes, 3 years. Its not because the game is so deep that I've been trying different things for 3 years. It's more like I'll hit 2k population, everybody starts dying and emigrating, and I have no idea what's happening. I've never made it to the empire stage. It doesn't help that they radically change important mechanics, like food or health, every 6 months. It took me 2 years to figure out how important physicians, NOT hospitals, are for health. In most city builder games, you build the hospital and it takes care of your citizens. But in this game, you need a hospital, a well, a physician, a lavatory, and a bathhouse, as well as increased rations, and half of those things you have to unlock in the tech tree.
Almost none of this is communicated directly by the game - I had to go to reddit posts or a fandom wiki page to get basic information on how the game works. I broke down and started asking AI for help because so few people play this game that it's genuinely difficult to find tutorials that are accurate to the current patch, which goes back to the radically changing mechanics every six months issue. Like, if hovering over the health meter for you civilization said something like "You need a bathhouse," I would have avoided 3 years (yes 3 years) of being completely confused as to why my cities kept dying at 3k pop. If it would have said "You need physicians" then I would have avoided 2 years of civs dying at 2k pop.
The tech tree has 10 pages, each with at least 8 different subtrees, with each subtree having at least 3 tiers in most cases, and some are literally 6 levels deep. Many pages have more like 16 subtrees. In hundreds of tech nodes, each usually having 4-8 allocations levels each, how tf am I supposed to just pick something like a bathhouse out of it when I'm having a health issue, especially when its description in the tech tree seriously undersells its importance?
I really want to love this game and recommend it to others, but there's a persistent issue with communication. I spent the first year dying during every battle because the game never communicates how important equipment AND training is for effectiveness. I thought archers were just broken for the first year i played the game because, without training, they will fire maybe once during a battle. There's a lot in this game that's way more important than other things, but the game rarely calls your attention to those mechanics as important. The game has a lot of cool ideas and deep mechanics, but that mostly is a disservice given the current presentation. If I fail something once, that's on me. But if I'm persistently failing the same way over and over, that's probably the game's fault for not giving me any hints or direction on what's going wrong. They need to either reduce the complexity of the game, or figure out how to get point across.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Progress is incredibly slow and narrow.
Your serfs will always complain about something incredibly stupid, like no free homes being available in the direct vicinity of their workplace. I guess walking 200m to work is too far.
The fart sound spam is just gross. I at some point just muted the game for hours before installing a mod for this.
Exploration gets punished and is always locked by the most frustrating tech tree.
Decay for knowledge and non biologic items seems grossly exaggerated.
Combat is just broken. Units dance around each other endlessly without anyone actually dying apart from cavalry raid one shots. I had fights where 100 trained archers kept shooting for 15 minutes at a small separated group of raiders for 10 minutes straight before the first one died. I only won because their morale eventually dropped low enough. This hard trained army with 60/100 archery skill can stand meters infront of a bugged enemy, but still miss 80% of their shots and take half a minute before they fire again.
Another fight they rushed my throne and I had to contest it, but because no one ever dies they eventually won the fight even though 95% of my army was still alive and well.
Half the squad doesn't actually swing their swords or shoot. You can watch the timer "reloading X seconds" "aiming" "firing" and it'll just be stuck at "firing" for 20 seconds until eventually 2/100 units shoot and now the whole squad is reloading again.
Logistics becomes an unsolvable nightmare once your base grows a bunch.
"Beating Songs of Syx" requires cheesing the game over and over again.
Apparently a village of 1500 needs 5 reasonably sized hospitals.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The tutorial is extremely lackluster and while what it teaches you helps for the early game, you are going to constantly run into failed settlement after failed settlement. There is seriously no positive to playing any race that requires meat, beyond their combat abilities and even this is lacking as equipment will easily make up the difference. Play pigs, spam farms, win game because you can just buy everything. I'll continue to play it but I cannot in good faith leave a positive review without some sort of improvement with the tutorial. If this game had been any more niche, I might have never figured it out with how cluttered the UI is.
I also didn't appreciate how the zoom functionality was implemented, I would rather have a fine adjustment of zoom rather than levels. For players like me, there's a particular level of zoom that's just right, this game's got:

Songs of Syx combines the best of Dwarf Fortress' world building, with Banished's settlement survival, but then scales it up to 4X strategy game levels. You grow from a tiny settlement of 10 to an empire with multiple cities, armies, trade relations, multi-race relations, and much more.
But even at the 10-20h mark it's fun to just quietly setup supply lines and build a town. The game has so many simulated systems that interact in neat ways, so it really feels like a real world. Buildings require maintenance, materials in storage decay, so simply filling your storehouse is not always the best use of your limited labor pool. Raising kids takes a parent's focus off their work for a while. Soldiers can spend up to 10 years on training and becoming _good_. You can over-gear them to get improved quality gear, so your elite troops can get elite gear. Or you simply muster some peasants with minimal training and treat them like cannon fodder in their first battle. Both valid tactics, from the looks of it. The mid-game is fun. The empire will come later.

IT IS NOT for the week of mind or spirit. Because only those who sacrifice something may earn the glory of victory and their names be forever embedded in the songs of Syx and their triumphs over the land forevermore told through the enrapturing tongues of story and song.
