Let me start with: Overall Icarus is a fun game. However, fun is doing a LOT of heavy lifting in that sentence. There is a lot about this game that absolutely does NOT feel like a 1.0+ release. There is a lot of jank and frustration in many core mechanics that make this game still feel early access.
My review is going to be focused from the perspective of someone who loves building. I play these games to build. Valheim, Ark, Sons of the Forest, I got them all so I can build, and Icarus was no exception. And you can build some pretty neat things in this game. I've really enjoyed putting many hours into building a base with a bridge that extends over one of the lakes in the Forest on Olympus.
However, The structural stability feature of the game is good in theory, but ends up being a massive pain in the ass. The snapping and grid system works against you just as often as it works with you, and while it does help to keep everything nice, tidy and lined up, I often find myself wrestling to get a piece in the spot I want it and struggling to attach to the structural support I'm trying to snap it to. The structural pillars are especially egregious in this. I spend more time spamming the rotate key and trying to get the seemingly required pixel perfect mouse aiming to make the pillar face the way I want, only to have it move when I put pressure on the mouse to click to place and the piece just goes where ever it feels like.
The storms are a very neat idea, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Shelter is often required during the various storms that hit periodically, but the game doesnt seem to be consistent on what it considers shelter. Plus, unless you start off building at stone tier or better, your hard work will be all washed away when a wind storm completely decimates your wooden or thatch structures.
The perks and perk trees are, again, neat ideas but awful execution. With a perk cap, the player must specialize in their build - which I have no problem with. My problem lies in how the perks are structured and distributed within those trees. Respecing your points is available, but uses the in game REN currency to do so after your free X (40? I believe?) respec points. REN is pretty much infinitely obtainable, yes, but it makes an already very grindy game just artificially bigger.
Speaking of grinding, there is a LOT of it. My time in Olympus has been probably split 20-80% solo-multiplayer with just one other person, and hoooooo boy, the sheer amount of ♥♥♥♥ you need just to build a single wall (looking at you Concrete). And you will need a lot of space in your permanent base for all the workbenches, because this game took a cue from Conan Exiles, and you need a specialized bench for every aspect you could imagine. It would be SO lovely if the masonry and carpentry benches were merged, the forge and glassblowing bench were merged, the herbalism and grinding benches were merged, etc.
Resource requirements, in my opinion, could also be toned down, especially in tiers 3 and onward. The game requires that the player venture into caves to access the mining nodes, then makes the caves less enjoyable than a walmart trip on black friday with no shopping list to guide you. Worms, bees, spiders, and other mobs in the cave are annoying but fine. But the cave sickness system is honestly just downright cruel. Yes, one can mitigate or lessen it - but that takes yet more grinding to make potions/tonics/pills, or the dehumidifier (I'm gonna cry, its all so resource expensive), when maybe the system could just be removed entirely or maybe just lessened.
Mining nodes are limited, too. Finite. Pop those voxels, and its gone, baby. There are things you can do about it in game, yes, but also, that is so insanely stressful, especially when destroying structures doesn't fully refund materials. And it feeds into the resource scramble at higher tiers because unless you get insanely lucky with the randomly generated contents of the non-randomly generated deep-ore mining nodes, you may find yourself having to trek literal real world hours across the map to get to a tier 1 deposit (iron, sulfur, silica), because almost everything after tier 2 crafting requires at least one, if not multiple, of those materials, and at insane amounts. You will bottleneck. It is inevitable.
Inventory space is woefully limited, which forces the player to turn to the mounts and pets system, which is yet another bench, skill tree, BLUEPRINT UNLOCK SYSTEM point dump (luckily not finite, but the player is aggravatingly slowly drip-fed points per level up, and with the benches requiring points, then the individual items requiring points, its a whole thing.), and resource sink. And usually, your pet dies about 15 minutes after taming it, because the system for commanding and maintaining pets is.. well bare-bones would be generous. Animal husbandry and farming are my second favorite systems in games like this, typically, and here its just a pain.
Not every creature is tamable, which I have no problem with, but the taming methods are wildly inconsistent. Some you must trap and build bait for, then babysit meticulously, taking precious time from your resource gathering. Others- you kill their mom then claim a baby for your own. The whole system feels half-baked and slapped in to justify the pets/homesteading DLC, which I am NOT purchasing.
Farming punishes the player for growing crops by inflicting a crop fatigue system within the crop plots. Fertilizer doesn't seem to be strong enough to mitigate it, and I understand the idea is to mimic real life farming, where one must rotate their crops for the health of the soil. That's cool, I guess, but in Icarus, it just serves to be pointlessly frustrating and time consuming. Building a greenhouse helps, but the resources to build the glass are - you guessed it! intense and a pain to gather! - only for a wind storm to shatter it all because the durability on the panes are atrocious.
Too often, I find myself excited to log in to my prospect, only to look at my chore list for it, and realize this just feels like a second job to me. It loses its novelty very quickly. I had the same problem with Satisfactory, where I'm pouring hours of my life into something that just does not give the returns I'm looking for.
I got the game on sale for about $8.00 USD, so I'm not upset with what I have received overall, but I certainly would not buy this game for full price. And it is with a dissatisfied grumble that I give this game a recommendation. Because there is a gem here. they just make you dig through so much frustration to get there,... and your stamina bar has been halved by cave sickness.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

So they paywalled all the extra content, including the new weapons, new armors, new vehicle, new features, etc.
This isnt out of the norm for how games MTX extra things. However. They decided to make it so you had to wipe your progress and start over on a completely new planet and grind from nothing just to get the resources to build the item you unlocked from the DLC, and the resources are unique to that new save file. So you cannot actually have all the things you paid for all at once unless you use a save editor in your original game. Furthermore even if you try to use the space workshop to order things from space onto your original planet, the equipment is still region locked to that world because they added region unique resource requirements just to -buy the equipment a second time-.
The developer's excuse for doing this? "We want to force the players to play the new regions we made instead of having fun doing their own thing, even though they paid actual money to unlock this content." They also did not disclose anywhere in the game or on the DLC on steam that they did this and its non-refundable. The DLC was not cheap and even when it goes on sale, it only goes on sale for about 5$ off the original price. To get the extra DLC its around 100+$. That is extremely expensive for a game that is also so incomplete and ridden with bugs that have actually made some playthroughs unplayable. I tried the new areas to grind for the stuff and actually found dead ends in the gameplay loop where i died and could not respawn anywhere else but the ice region where you spawn in naked and die from hypothermia before you can craft or get anything to save your life. There are also enemies that burrow and will teleport to you to instantly kill you in this same region along with various other pitfalls that are poorly designed and end up killing you. Including invisible landmines.
I spent over 26 hours in a new region trying to grind and complete the missions needed to get the things i wanted in that region and could not get past the poorly design choices the developers made.

The game is barely optimized enough to be performative on top tier GPUs. I have been playing the base game with disappointing frame rate on a 3090, but its still playable. Trying to play it on my gaming laptop with a 4070 is just downright unplayable; about 5 FPS. I decided not to purchase any of their overpriced DLC until the devs had optimized the game.
And now I have moved beyond disappointed. While playing on the base game map, they allow the player to unlock the blueprint for batteries; one of the resources you need to craft them is lithium. Lithium can only be found on a paid DLC map. So even if I pay for the DLC, I wouldn't be able to set up a self sustaining power grid that works around the clock.
This isn't just poor game design like their terrible optimization. This is a rug pull. This game studio's business model aims to take as much money from their customers while delivering as little as possible. And if you look on their website they have a picture of Lamborghini parked INSIDE their offices. The exorbitant display of wealth while fleecing their customers is an insult.

Mind, I DO like the game, and will keep seeing what else they've got up their sleeves - I bought the DLCs for crying out loud. (of which Dangerous Horizons and New Frontiers might be the only worthwhile ones.)
Performance will be an issue. I'm not blaming Unreal Engine for this, as I've played games on UE which ran just fine.
Put your graphics settings to a lower setting to enjoy consistent, stable FPS.

Its a survival-crafting game like any other, with the monotone resource grind once you get to some tier-level that matters. The emphasis is on survival, which I really only felt once; in the Prometheus Map.
Figuring that maybe its because I'm playing on Normal, I switched to Hard and figured there's not much else going on either - just some numbers being changed, and maybe a wolf taking one more arrow to put down.
The idea of being on an "alien planet, where terraforming attempts have gone wrong" sounds promising, until you realise you're on an earth-like planet for the majority of your playtime, unless you get the DLC maps which try to make it different. The "alien" lifeforms you'll find are crossbreeds between hogs and horses, and maybe the cave worms.
Player progression is tied to Research Tiers, from basically cavemen with a stone spear, up to space-faring cavemen with a titanium-alloy spear. Bow and arrow dominates for how easy and simple it is to craft and use them. Guns exist, but due to their reload times, resources to craft one and then to spec skill points if you wanna REALLY bring back home the bacon, bow and arrow sticks with you from the early game up to 'end-game'.
Different food and drink items give different bonuses, with a generalistic rule of thumb being that plants are stamina-related while meats are health-related. Hunger isn't an issue, only what bonus you want from it. While it does break up the monotone pattern of other survival games having hunger and thirst be there without much afterthought, I felt myself just eating the same meals that boost either gathering items or killing things - at least its more variety than a college student gets.
Graphics wise, its a pretty game, but its a photo-realistic game like any other. Personally, I'm tired of those.
The visuals get to shine more when you start seeing a weather event approaching, which, while it is a gameplay element; and something the game seems to have made a big fuss about in its live-action trailers, they fall behind.
Storms happen once in a while in a biome, forcing you to just stop what you're doing outside and go bunker down inside your base or whatever shelter you've made. There isn't much interactivity with it, it's putting a stop to your activity and wait 5-10 minutes for it all to roll over. At worst, you have to rebuild parts of your base, if you havent made everything a concrete jungle yet.

Performance will be an issue. I'm not blaming Unreal Engine for this, as I've played games on UE which ran just fine.
Put your graphics settings to a lower setting to enjoy consistent, stable FPS.
If you're unlucky, you might crash here and there.
Its a survival-crafting game like any other, with the monotone resource grind once you get to some tier-level that matters. The emphasis is on survival, which I really only felt once; in the Prometheus Map.
Figuring that maybe its because I'm playing on Normal, I switched to Hard and figured there's not much else going on either - just some numbers being changed, and maybe a wolf taking one more arrow to put down.
The idea of being on an "alien planet, where terraforming attempts have gone wrong" sounds promising, until you realise you're on an earth-like planet for the majority of your playtime, unless you get the DLC maps which try to make it different. The "alien" lifeforms you'll find are crossbreeds between hogs and horses, and maybe the cave worms.
Player progression is tied to Research Tiers, from basically cavemen with a stone spear, up to space-faring cavemen with a titanium-alloy spear. Bow and arrow dominates for how easy and simple it is to craft and use them. Guns exist, but due to their reload times, resources to craft one and then to spec skill points if you wanna REALLY bring back home the bacon, bow and arrow sticks with you from the early game up to 'end-game'.
Different food and drink items give different bonuses, with a generalistic rule of thumb being that plants are stamina-related while meats are health-related. Hunger isn't an issue, only what bonus you want from it. While it does break up the monotone pattern of other survival games having hunger and thirst be there without much afterthought, I felt myself just eating the same meals that boost either gathering items or killing things - at least its more variety than a college student gets.
Graphics wise, its a pretty game, but its a photo-realistic game like any other. Personally, I'm tired of those.
The visuals get to shine more when you start seeing a weather event approaching, which, while it is a gameplay element; and something the game seems to have made a big fuss about in its live-action trailers, they fall behind.
Storms happen once in a while in a biome, forcing you to just stop what you're doing outside and go bunker down inside your base or whatever shelter you've made. There isn't much interactivity with it, it's putting a stop to your activity and wait 5-10 minutes for it all to roll over. At worst, you have to rebuild parts of your base, if you havent made everything a concrete jungle yet.

And most of the time it just feels like an inventory management game, move ore here, move processed item here and on and on, there is no automation of any kind, you're gonna see that inventory screen in your sleep haha.
If you want to do a boss fight or create a large structure you have to spend days prepping for the task, and you have to hope you have enough time between chores to go and do the fun thing you wanted to do.
There is a great game here, but it just feels like the game wants you to suffer, rather than enjoy your time exploring or fighting or building.
I should mention i played solo, maybe if you can split the chores with other players and are happy to deal with the awful performance in multiplayer then it can be fun, but it is too much like a full time job for a solo player.
special mention to the new patch change that makes the miasmic tools (which were the best part of resource gathering as you level up on the tech tree) way less useful and adding yet another chore to manage (ore decay?).

If you like the level-up grind and/or building things, you will enjoy this. The weather events are really good and add an element of urgency in the play. The tech and talent trees are well thought out and fun to work with and have quite a lot of areas you can explore (building, cooking, husbandry, etc). However, 1) the game is 100% non-intuitive or instructive, you will have to google virtually every action you take and mission you undertake. At level 32 I'm guessing i have googled 500+ things in the game. Not sure who thinks it is fun to have no clue how to make something or fill something up. 2) the interaction with Workshop items in orbit is an utter disaster, I lose precious items (sometimes ALL of them) every time I interact with it. I'm sure I'm doing some undocumented task incorrectly but its heartbreaking to collect all that Exotic to have it go up in smoke. 3) the weapon level-ups seem rather paltry and hard to get excited about, basically adding maybe 7-15% going from stone->iron->steel->platinum every 10 game levels (I have not played with guns yet so that may be a huge jump). 4) OMG all the running....\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Building is half-baked with having to craft individual pieces, move them to the hot bar, then assemble from there rather than a "crafting hammer" menu approach many survival games take to reduce this drudgery.
The survival elements feel more cumbersome than fun. Water gives you dysentery, despite being a space man, in a space suit, with the tutorial telling you your suit will filter out most things... not a big deal, but a perfect example of the game being designed to just generally be frustrating rather than challenging in any fun way.
Storms are a pain and wreck early bases with little workaround in early levels.
Valheim, Soulmask, Conan, etc all do the survival gameplay better and have good building system.

I've played for 142 hours and I still haven't unlocked everything in the base game. They also do updates very frequently and shape the game in ways that make a lot of sense.
