\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tGiven the weekend deal, I felt compelled to write a review on this game. I really enjoy the survival genre and bought this game when it first came out. Back then, it was just a bunch of missions where your on world progress was not saved in between missions.
When I came back a couple years later, they had implemented the "Open World" game mode which is where this game truly shines. Out of all of the survival games I play, I keep coming back to this one. This game went from complete jank on release to something much much better.
The base game includes Olympus which is definitely fairly priced for the amount of content you get. With that said, if you are thinking about which DLCs to get, I recommend the New Frontiers and the Dangerous Horizons expansions. These are the two latest expansions represent the growth and refinement of RocketWerkz's development of Icarus. They both have storylines in the Open World missions and expand on the prospector lore.
I am impressed that the devs have continued to put out weekly updates and improvements for this game. I would still like to see a little bit more quality of life in terms of crafting from storage but overall this game is fun. If you are playing during the free weekend, be sure to race for stone structures early. With that said, take the time to enjoy the experience of your first wooden base burning down during a flash lightning storm as you use your fire whacker to save it. Learn to "Bear Joust" and assemble an army of tamed wolves to take with you into the wilds.
Build out your talent tree and ponder where to put your tech points to unlock new buildings and craftable items. Beware of the polar bears that require a different jousting technique.
The DLC maps are much more refined, especially the latest one. With that said, you will have a good time with the base game if it grabs you. Also you DO NOT have to buy the content packs or outpost packs. Completely optional though represent options for those who want to support the devs and play with some additional cosmetic content.

Evolving your base is satisfying and when it feels like things are easy you make a base in another biome and see the challenges it creates. Its systems are fairly well rounded and it is a pretty in depth. I don't write reviews very often but Rocketwerkz has truly made this a labor of love. Its really unfortunate that the game had a rough launch because they've put so much work into it since then. I have played nearly every game in this genre and I think I've put more time into this one than all the others combined.
There's a ton of content included with the base game and they put out a weekly update consistently even if you don't buy the DLC. I think everyone should give the game chance. With that said, I wont ignore that the game does have its bugs/issues. Most of them are manageable, but there's a few that can be pretty frustrating. The game doesn't have a manual save option. It saves at a customizable interval, however it sometimes fails to sync to steam or the file corrupts which can cost hours of playtime. 4 hours is the largest span I,ve lost.
There's a few different modes to chose from for how you want to play. An open world choice, which is pretty self explanatory, and you run everything from there(missions, campaign, etc.) I haven't every actually played the open world.
There's also a mission mode which acts like an extraction mode where you drop in with a time limit(the limit isn't an issue for completing the missions anymore since early in development). You drop in with nothing, at least in the beginning missions, progress as much as you'd like or need to in order to complete the mission then extract when ready.
There's also a more casual outpost mode that just a smaller map made to be more chill.
regardless of which method you chose to play, you will need to find a way to play the game that works for you and you enjoy. The game doesn't explain things in much detail so you have to figure it out as you go, but most things are quite intuitive.
I'd certainly recommend picking up Icarus, but don't bring in expectations, its rather unique. I look forward to see how they continue evolving the game.

First the DLC, I don't know why people have become so fixated on free content for games. Each of the large DLC's for this game includes a entirely new, massive, map with missions, enemies, etc. They are each essentially doubling the original games content. They are not required. I've spent >200 hours and only about halfway through the first maps missions and not touched the campaign, Great Hunts, or the 3 DLC maps. They also have done a weekly update nearly every week for years fixing bugs and adding Free items often.
Second is all the complaints. This isn't a copy and paste open world survival craft. you have to learn the game by playing it and figuring things out. Stop turning to google and youtube the second you have a hard time with something. A few hours doesn't scratch the surface of learning how the game works.
Lastly the the game runs buttery smooth on max graphics(without ray tracing) for me, and my PC is nothing crazy.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The game crashes if you run it in open world for too long.

You *can* play it without the DLCs but with them it is just better but it will triple the cost of the game.
All in all it is becoming a paradox game, more DLC for more money and more content locked behind DLC that cost more then the base game. If this was fixed or you dont care about it, I would highly recommend it this is my only gripe but it is too big to recommend it right now.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tReally tried to get into it with some friends but the base game feels very aimless to me, the progression might just be the slowest progression system I've ever played in a survival game and it feels extremely unrewarding when you do hit a new tab of things you don't really get any new gameplay with them, just the same stuff till you level up more. The game really feels like you need the DLC to add more bosses to the game to give you something to actually aim towards for progressing, I could see this game being a lot of fun if I had all the content in it but it very heavily feels to me like the fun is behind dlc's and not in the base game for me.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
