You can keep playing all day long looking for new interaction's and boon's combo's, every little dialogue is unique and 70% of it is always funny in some way especially Zagreus and Hades sarcastic nature, always gotta be my favourite interactions when you renovating the house. tldr this game is fun asf and if you unfamiliar with rogue-like games this is the perfect start, lwk got me interested to buy The Saac, also can't wait to play Hades 2. Not that this game needs an introduction from the already overwhelmingly positive reviews it has.
From the prospective of someone who has never really played or given a chance on Rouge-lites. Was never interested and generally would be bored of this genre of game. However, Hades is very different!
Firstly, I played this on my Steam deck, it runs beautifully, and is a very bug free game, good start. I got this due to its highly recommendation on both steam and other sites as one of the best in it's genre, and steam deck game. My new job was requiring me to look at alternative ways to play games and entertain myself, And I am glad I did.
Having played a few other Rouge Lites, or possibly Rouge games? I found they can be very daunting in the difficulty, its a genre that usually requires you to get better instead of the game getting easier, Like a RPG.
I will admit, I went for God mode. I have since played without, and I do enjoy it, however without it, I feel I would have abandoned the game sooner. It allowed me to appreciate the game, the story and the mechanics.
It's a great game for a few reasons,
The Story;
It's a well known piece of history, or mythology, I was conveniently reading Stephen Frys "Mythos" at the same time, learning the factual version along side, however its a very "Relatable" story, it's something we learn as kids, and yet you still wonder, "What will happen next?".
This is enhanced by two factors, one being the superb Voice Acting. The deep voices, the light hearted sarcasm in tone, it works perfectly.
And the Art work, being in a Cartoon-ish style keeps it engaging without the need for high end graphics or looking as basic as a point and click adventure.
Gameplay;
From other reviews, this is labelled as something better than it's rivals, I couldn't really say about that, however, I can say it was fluid and easy enough to pick up, without being overwhelming, I also found it to have enough of a task, that each wave, round and Run I did, I felt I could improve, but would also "kick myself" for making simple mistakes. There is a nice aspect of Randomness included in this, with each god having it's own "Boons" and obviously, playstyles. Weapons I wouldn't usually take, ways I wouldn't usually play are encouraged and albeit, very amusing, with a nice and simple mechanic of reward.
Sound design;
The in-game music, the sound of pots being smashed, and the VA. It all goes together so nicely, nothing is over done, the game has a very ancient feel in it's atmosphere and there is plenty of humour included that it blends synonymously.
Overall, This game really surprised me, so much that after a mere 5 hours, I was hooked, so much so I annoyed some of my family members and friends by mentioning this game. It goes without saying I wishlisted "Hades 2" almost immediately. I would honestly, highly recommend this game to anyone who hasn't really given rouge lites a go or is put off by the difficulty of them, even if you're an Achievement hunter, so far it seems more of a time consuming aspect than it does a Difficulty aspect.

zagreus may be a god... but he never really feels like one
so much content... like so much...
i've had hades since launch but haven't really had the time to wrap it up until recently... it's a very solid roguelike (i know it's lite but whatever man...) with an in-depth(?) boon system that helps you progress through the different levels of the underworld to escape. it feels really good to get the hang of the enemies and bosses and learn their attack patterns and spawning quirks. learning how to weave attacks between dashes, using your cast effectively, and learning each individual weapon (and their aspects!) is a whole lot of fun! it's an easy-to-pickup but difficult-to-master hack-n-slash at its core...
and while i do recommend the game and do think it can be fun... the voice acting, story, and art direction are doing a lot of heavy lifting here... i've 100%'ed the achievements and wanted to 100% the game as well... but after looking through what was left: luck-based fishing minigame, luck-based boon collecting, and the uber-grindy resource director ranks... i evaluated how much fun i was having with the gameplay loop... and yeah, i think i'm good... i finished the main story, epilogue, and a few more runs to wrap up some achievements. for a roguelite, there's just never really any runs where i feel strong as zagreus. i have good runs mostly... with some here and there getting shafted by luck. maybe it's the enemies or world design that just makes runs feel a little... tedious. i think tartarus is the best (and most engaging!) level in the game... and to think that of the first level is a little worrisome. asphodel is designed very poorly. i get the point of learning to avoid traps and slowing the player down, but man. massive lava pits (with arguable hitboxes) and enemies that just run away and snipe you with bombs or shockwaves or gorgon stones... it's just... unengaging to me. lernie has to be the worst boss i have faced... maybe ever... in a roguelike. forcing the player to not just slow down, but to just completely stop playing due to invincibility and a shoehorned three-part fight is insulting. i'd say the hydra is one of the easiest bosses too (it has obviously slow and telegraphed attacks), but that boss fight always just feels like it's artificially halting my game. what gives? elysium is an absolutely gorgeous level... but it's plagued with exalted (which share the same self-revival mechanic that is borrowed from a previous supergiant game: transistor. it's very unfun here too.) add on pacts of punishment that give these enemies more health or armor or damage control armor and then you just have to sit there and slog through waves of the same enemies. it could be your first run or your hundredth run and besides simple modifiers like 'more damage' or 'more health' or 'more speed' nothing about them changes. i will say, the first time i beat theseus and asterius i jumped out of my chair. these two killed my first run and many after that until i finally got them downloaded.
enough about my griping though. these are just issues i personally have with hades as a roguelite... i just think it feels a little more tedious comparatively... but! there is so much to love here... supergiant has always had a penchant for making expansive worlds with interesting characters that feel so real and hades is no exception. zagreus (voiced by darren korb?! who has done the music and audio for all of the supergiant games) is an amazing protagonist. he's rebellious but never feels too angsty or angry... he's regal, but personable and down-to-earth... and his character design is absolutely stellar... they did a great job at subtly showing the physical similarities he shares with both of his parents (spoilers!) but i could honestly gush pink about all of the characters... hades, nyx, dua, the furies, the GODS, skelly! wonderfully illustrated character designs with subtle details and intensely colorful personalities. the character portraits generally remain idle, but special interactions can briefly have the character face you or change their expression and i just love that. especially seeing the other sides of some of the more serious characters. i think meg has to be my absolute favorite. she's voiced by avalon penrose (who does a phenomenal job!) and her interactions with zag just feel so real. woof.
i don't want to delve too deeply into spoilers, so i won't touch too much on the ending... but it's probably the biggest reason the game has received as much praise as it has. it's supergiant's writing at their absolute best. zag's familial relationships server as the central anchor to the story and seeing him develop and deepen relationships throughout runs is incredibly satisfying. there's so much profound and heartfelt dialogue... i especially love the interactions between zagreus and nyx nearing the epilogue (at least for my runs)... it's incredibly touching. there's just something so special about seeing that type of relationship depicted in a video game. just lovely stuff...
i think i finally wrapped up hades because a friend of mine told me they had started it and were struggling. we share a lot of the same interests in media and i knew they would really enjoy the story... so i just recommended they turned on god mode. and i think that's my biggest reason to thumbs up the game. it has something for everyone. if you want to tough it out and 100% the game on hell mode... good for you! if you want to go through runs just to get nectar to give to your honeys... good for you! nothing is locked on either style of run and that's how things should be.

enough about my griping though. these are just issues i personally have with hades as a roguelite... i just think it feels a little more tedious comparatively... but! there is so much to love here... supergiant has always had a penchant for making expansive worlds with interesting characters that feel so real and hades is no exception. zagreus (voiced by darren korb?! who has done the music and audio for all of the supergiant games) is an amazing protagonist. he's rebellious but never feels too angsty or angry... he's regal, but personable and down-to-earth... and his character design is absolutely stellar... they did a great job at subtly showing the physical similarities he shares with both of his parents (spoilers!) but i could honestly gush pink about all of the characters... hades, nyx, dua, the furies, the GODS, skelly! wonderfully illustrated character designs with subtle details and intensely colorful personalities. the character portraits generally remain idle, but special interactions can briefly have the character face you or change their expression and i just love that. especially seeing the other sides of some of the more serious characters. i think meg has to be my absolute favorite. she's voiced by avalon penrose (who does a phenomenal job!) and her interactions with zag just feel so real. woof.
i don't want to delve too deeply into spoilers, so i won't touch too much on the ending... but it's probably the biggest reason the game has received as much praise as it has. it's supergiant's writing at their absolute best. zag's familial relationships server as the central anchor to the story and seeing him develop and deepen relationships throughout runs is incredibly satisfying. there's so much profound and heartfelt dialogue... i especially love the interactions between zagreus and nyx nearing the epilogue (at least for my runs)... it's incredibly touching. there's just something so special about seeing that type of relationship depicted in a video game. just lovely stuff...
i think i finally wrapped up hades because a friend of mine told me they had started it and were struggling. we share a lot of the same interests in media and i knew they would really enjoy the story... so i just recommended they turned on god mode. and i think that's my biggest reason to thumbs up the game. it has something for everyone. if you want to tough it out and 100% the game on hell mode... good for you! if you want to go through runs just to get nectar to give to your honeys... good for you! nothing is locked on either style of run and that's how things should be.

When it comes to roguelikes, I find they can often struggle to properly balance gameplay difficulty; however, Hades has a very interesting take on this problem; you figure it out. Each run can be changed, modifying almost every aspect of the game to rebalance the challenge so you never feel fully on top. And with boss rewards, you will need to confront a harder run to progress. This is on top of the Mirror of Night that lets you buff yourself over the game that balances out the harder runs.

It takes a while for the tracks to click with me before it becomes catchy. All the character designs are interesting and diverse. The art style is pretty good. Every single dialogue have voice acting and they're very well voiced. The gameplay is half roguelite and half visual novel with very light dating sim mechanic. What stands out about this game and make it unique is how there are about 21,000 dialogues and characters interactions. Every characters have something to say in every situations and even in very rare situations like getting to the final boss with no upgrades. All the characters show great personalities and most of the lore are told through dialogue. The game isn't 100% accurate with its Greek mythos lore, but near close to it. There isn't a backlog or auto mode for the dialogue. It isn't needed but a small QoL for readers.
It is a roguelite so it is what you'd expect. You go in clear or fail a run to accumulate metaprogression resources to get stronger to make run easier to beat. Clearing the run for the first time let you modify your runs to make it harder to near impossible. You pick your reward routes and it can be kill or safe room. During runs there are a lot of different upgrades that synergize with each other that can make each run different, even when trying to do the same build again. There are exclusive and unique upgrades when having two different gods' upgrade. There are 6 base weapons with each weapons having 4 different modification for different playstyle. It is a roguelike so to get the credits to roll you need to beat a certain amount of runs and to get the true ending you need to engage with its "dating sim" mechanic. There is a lot of content but a lot of grinding. All in all, it is really fun (if RNG is in your favor). Although the 3rd region boss, to me personally, is the most annoying and irritating. And the Achilles' quest/story is annoying and long because it require you to go all the way to the 3rd area of a run and talk to a specific NPC which is RNG and you may or may not encounter.

During runs there are a lot of different upgrades that synergize with each other that can make each run different, even when trying to do the same build again. There are exclusive and unique upgrades when having two different gods' upgrade. There are 6 base weapons with each weapons having 4 different modification for different playstyle. It is a roguelike so to get the credits to roll you need to beat a certain amount of runs and to get the true ending you need to engage with its "dating sim" mechanic. There is a lot of content but a lot of grinding. All in all, it is really fun (if RNG is in your favor). Although the 3rd region boss, to me personally, is the most annoying and irritating. And the Achilles' quest/story is annoying and long because it require you to go all the way to the 3rd area of a run and talk to a specific NPC which is RNG and you may or may not encounter.

I'm often a curmudgeon about the big popular stuff, but this is big and popular because the devs put a boatload of work into it *and* happened to hit on some universal stuff that people like.
Which to say: hot people talking very close to you, and also melodrama.
I do find the controls just a touch unintuitive. Enemy attack hitboxes tend to appear slightly before their attack animation. They have a windup to compensate for this, but it still makes the precise timing kinda weird. Also, you can't clash or dodge through attacks unless you get a specific powerup for it, and that powerup feels kinda essential to the gameloop. Also, the way you have to use some weapons hurts your hands.
That's it. That's all the critiques I've got.
Hades is solid. Tight gameloop. Fun moment to moment combat. The enemies do a really solid job of not being annoying while still having interesting gimmicks (for the most part, the possum caves are an exception.) The game also evolves with you in a way that feels exceedingly well paced. The moment fights with Megara start feeling stale, the other furies start showing up. Etc.
The story is incremental, but there's so dang much of it. And every character you interact with has TONS of contextual dialog. The characters are varied, and while I don't find all of them compelling there's such a range that everyone will return from this game having strong opinions about one or two.
Mechanically, a lot of this game is built around reducing frustration without reducing difficulty, and I think that's pretty commendable. Frustration *can* serve interesting purposes in design, but I'd rather low frustration high difficulty than the other way around.
With the other Supergiant games I've played, I kinda thought they were only okay. Bastion had a nice narrator. Transistor was pretty. Both felt kinda like they were missing something.
That something was rogue.
