As a casual player who is in no way an expert at any of the old SWAT games, I see this game as having succeeded quite well in serving as an unofficial sequel to those and I have had quite a lot of fun with it so far.

Story and Missions
This game doesn't really have one continuous linear story line but instead is a collection of different scenarios and mission arcs that are accessed from an open lobby like area. You play as the commander of a SWAT unit and serve as the backbone of every operation. Your job is to gear yourself and your team accordingly, make all the difficult calls during missions and make sure you and the team come out unharmed, both physically and mentally.

When starting missions, listen to briefings, manage your crew and customise your loadout, it is all done by walking through a police station that serves as like a free roam menu. While it was cool the first few times I loaded into it, it quickly got old and I think this game would have benefitted a lot more from just having a normal text menu to start missions, manage your crew and change loadout from, instead of this whole police station walk around thing. It honestly just got annoying and I got stuck a few times trying to find the briefing room you can select missions from. On the topic of menus, I also wish there was a way to restart or replay missions faster, instead of the wall of loading screens you are forced to go through every time you just want to restart.

Gameplay and Difficulty
While this game is seen as a harder fps title, on the lower difficulties it isn't actually that hard and the game does quite well at teaching you how to play, to where I actually see it as quite beginner friendly. The only really hard part is successfully clearing out the bigger darker levels. This game is a lot of clearing out rooms very meticulously and that means you have to be alright with spending an hour walking around the same level trying to find that last enemy hiding under a bed, so that you can end the mission. While it was a bit annoying at first, it is a part of the experience, and I learned to enjoy it. Other than this though, I don't see this game as being very difficult on PC. The keybinds and commands feel natural and logical and if you have prior experience with multiplayer fps titles, you won't have any issues with the reaction times.

Censoring
While I do agree with it being stupid to dumb down and censor a PC release of a game because of console releases, I do think some people are overreacting a bit with the importance of what was censored out. I know that the aesthetics matter a lot in this game, as they set the tone for the whole mission you are playing and the impact it gives the player. Without the realistic and dark theme, the missions don't feel as real. That said, it doesn't make the game unplayable as some reviewers have said. I played this after the patch and first looked up what was uncensored after having completed the missions in question and I still had a lot of fun with it being censored or not, but I would of course still choose the option to have it uncensored if I could.

Multiplayer
I did not really touch multiplayer much, as I prefer to play games alone, but I did try it out briefly. While it was a "relaxing" experience for me, I have heard from multiple people that some players take roleplaying in this game really seriously and care a lot about how you dress, so if you are gonna play multiplayer, just be prepared to meet people like that I guess.

Conclusion
With the few issues it has, I still like this game and it fills a spot in the market that has been empty for a while, there just isn't many solo fps titles of this kind available and Ready or Not is filling that spot really well in my opinion. This game is 3 years old now and it is still relatively expensive. I bought it at Winter Sale 2025 on sale, and while I can't remember how much I paid, I do still recommend waiting for a sale.

Overall the game is great, especially in co-op. But if you love playing solo and want to role-play as a SWAT team leader, think twice before buying.

I bought it because commanding a SWAT team looked really interesting, but the SWAT AI is far worse than I imagined. In one mission I watched through their helmet cams as I ordered them to clear a room. After they cleared it, they stacked up against the wall like they always do, and then suspects came at us from another room. One suspect stood right in front of them, and they didn't shoot. They just looked at him until they died. Don't even get me started on firefights.

It feels like the roles are reversed: my SWAT team acts like weak, careless suspects who can't protect themselves or each other, while the suspects fight like special forces.

Other problems I ran into again and again:
- They block doorways and hallways and keep saying "need you to move" instead of walking around me.
- Commands are ignored or done badly.
- Room clearing is sloppy, and they react way too slowly to suspects.
- When I split up with the team to clear different rooms, they respond late or not at all to fights nearby.

Majority of the mods that fix this game are currently outdated and most of their creators have either quit or moved on to different games. It seems every update either breaks the game or forces modders to start from scratch.

\n\t\t\t\t\tWeak. Graphics and excellent and recoil is reasonably realistic. Immersion vacillates between very good and downright terrible. Weapon customization is pretty darn good, and the buffs/debuffs for weapon attachments usually make sense, but there's not much else I have to say that's nice.

The game feels clumsy, it requires nearly you to bind practically your entire keyboard, yielding annoying controls. Your AI teammates are idiots which is extra awesome when you're responsible for their mental health, a feature that's wack to begin with. I can't imagine anyone is really thrilled having to take care of the mental health of fictional SWAT officers, I'm not anyway. There's literally nothing about them that personalizes them or makes me care about keeping them around. If anything they are a hinderance to playing, I typically send them as far away from the danger to solo a level because they can be such a liability.

The squad commands are cool in theory, but feel convoluted and ruined by clunky AI teammates, who again, might get sad if you have to grease somebody shooting at you. Even better, you can't screw around in the campaign, because they permadeath and become big sad if you don't take the campaign seriously. If the campaign wasn't mandatory in order to unlock quickplay levels it wouldn't bother me as much, because the arcade-y-ness of quickplay is really the only appealing format of the game. In the campaign they insinuate that your actions matter a lot, but there's no personalization to the characters or what you're doing. I'm here to play a game, I don't have time to take care of a bunch of fictional character's mental health, Nobody who works for a living should find themselves wasting their time with this.

The point of view when aiming down sights is neither realistic or very helpful, red dots get washed out, especially if you white light, there's no indicator for where you're getting shot from, which I guess is desirable for some people arguing that it's more realistic. I both disagree with that assertion, and would add that the realism is lost on me when you move like you're wading through mud and shooting people center of mass with 5.56 feels like you're shooting them with spitballs. Between the iffy TTK on certain weapons, the glacial movement speed and the horrendous volume of key bindings that are required, it hinders the tense atmosphere that can build. People will say that the movement is from wearing kit/gear but if you move like these lead footed characters in kit, you should not be a SWAT officer.

Everything in this game feels convoluted and try hard in so many of the wrong areas. I really wanted to like this game, but it really isn't what I thought it would be. Wish I could return it, I regret buying it. Save your money.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI’ve been playing Ready or Not since the pre-beta/early access days. I supported this game when it was still being built because I genuinely believed in what the developers were promising and the direction they were taking.

After following the game for years, I honestly feel like the game I originally supported is very different from what we ended up with.

One of my biggest frustrations is how early supporters have been treated. People who supported this game during its early development were repeatedly given reasons to believe that long-term support would matter. Yet after all these years, I still feel like I received little to no meaningful recognition for being an early supporter. I didn’t even get the beta-related stuff I expected to receive.

Then there’s the content strategy.

Ready or Not was originally sold to many of us around the idea of continuing to build out the core game and delivering substantial content as development continued. Instead, we've increasingly seen additional content being put behind paid DLC.

DLC itself isn't automatically a problem. The problem is watching the development direction change while longtime players are still dealing with bugs, optimization issues, AI problems, gameplay inconsistencies, and features that have been changed, removed, delayed, or reworked from what players originally expected.

The community has also spent years pointing out differences between things that were shown, discussed, or promised during development and what eventually made it into the game. Maps, mechanics, AI behavior, missions, difficulty, and other aspects of the game have all gone through major changes.

And that's probably the biggest issue for me:

It's not that Ready or Not changed. Games change during development.

It's that I supported this game for YEARS based on a particular vision, and that vision has changed enough that I don't recognize the product I originally supported in the same way anymore.

I've seen countless longtime players raise similar concerns about the game's direction, monetization, technical problems, communication, removed or altered content, and the treatment of early supporters. Obviously, not every community complaint is universally agreed upon, but the fact that these discussions have continued for years says a lot about how divided the longtime playerbase has become.

I don't regret supporting an indie game during development. I don't regret giving the developers a chance.

What I regret is feeling like the support from those early years became meaningless once the game moved forward.

If you're buying Ready or Not today, you're buying the game as it exists today. Just don't assume that the experience, development philosophy, or content model will necessarily remain the same as what longtime

Enemy AI has wallhack and aim, will prefire you from behind the wall, always kill your teammates if you are not there(how the fudge whole swat trained team dies to 1 terrorist???), your AI teammates will miss flashes, block you in the doorways, will get crowded together and die, will not provide cover when you tell them too. It is just disappointing. The gunplay is ok, but sometimes you will miss shots with laser point on. Oh and the non-lethal weapons don`t really work, sometimes you need up to 6 shots from shotgun to put someone down, and as your teammates in commander mode can`t have altered loadout, how the hell are you supposed to clear out 18 people without lethal force, with issues with ai surrendering.\t\t\t\t\t

Overall, I started playing shortly after the game left Early Access, and even with only having about 10 hours of off-and-on playtime I can verify that it is in a much worse state than it was with its 1.0 release. However, the main reason you should not buy this game is that dev practices such as "retiring" content upon release for new platforms (i.e., the much derided, and rightfully so, console release), censoring thematically significant adult content (Eek, a penis! Oh heavens, breasts!) for that release no matter the platform, undisclosed use of generative AI content, and a lingering sense of antipathy towards the community that springboarded the game to its initial great success should only be rewarded in one way: without your money. \n\t\t\t\t\tI love this game. I love taking a bullet to the back of the head from my buddy. I love getting flashbang-blinded by him. I love getting blown sky-high together on a boobytrapped door. I love how his shotgun obliterates a suspect’s face while accidentally collateral-damaging a hostage in the process. And, of course, I love grabbing a hot coffee from the vending machine before every single mission.

Feeling nostalgic for SWAT 4? (Yeah, you can still play it—it’s on GOG, though getting it to run properly can be a pain). Well, this game is its spiritual successor! It’s modern, and honestly, it’s got balls. The devs weren't afraid to tackle sensitive topics and dark locations. The only misstep they made was that nasty censorship patch—the one right before the console release. Unfortunately, they had to tone a few things down to pass console certification, but thankfully it’s nothing game-breaking. You just won't see a couple of d.i.cks, lol.

My buddy and I cleared almost every single mission as a duo. Sadly, we couldn't assemble a full dream team, but we still managed pretty well. A few levels were tough, but the real nightmare was still ahead—I'll save that for a separate DLC review. That courthouse mission was a total nightmare; we spent easily 10+ hours just trying to clear it. But that's a story for another time.

Visually, the game looks great—fantastic graphics and atmospheric effects. The sound design is top-notch too. The way suspects scream, especially when taking a shotgun blast, is pure poetry. Give an Oscar to the voice actors, seriously.

That said, the AI definitely has issues. Sometimes they're dumb as a brick, and other times they have literal wallhacks and aimbot through surfaces. Optimization could also use some work.
