I keep coming back. These days, admittedly, this is partly because I have run out of other games to play and apparently my solution to a gaming drought is to found yet another medieval municipality. But I genuinely love this game.
I love its positivity. I love that I can adjust the settings until the experience fits me almost perfectly. I can build, manage, explore, produce, trade and generally live my peaceful little medieval life without the game insisting that misery builds character.
The problem is that Medieval Dynasty gives me the tools to build an entire functioning society, then seems genuinely surprised when I want to do something with it.
I have money. Please let me spend it.
Eventually, my settlements become economic monsters.
I have farmers. Craftspeople. Miners. Lumberjacks. Market stalls. Production chains. Everything feeds everything else, the villagers work, the money pours in, and eventually I reach the pinnacle of medieval achievement:
I need absolutely nothing.
I don't need the town vendors, since my town is entirely self sufficient. I don't need more production. I don't particularly need more money, but everyone keeps making it anyway.
At this point I am basically sitting on a mountain of coins wondering why medieval society has failed to invent municipal infrastructure, luxury goods, public buildings, town improvements, expensive projects or literally anything else I can blow my fortune on.
This is the No Man's Sky problem all over again: congratulations, you have successfully become rich. Your reward is that money is now meaningless.
And that's usually when I start another save.
In Medieval Dynasty, poverty is apparently the endgame.
The dynasty mechanic doesn't solve this either. By the time my child is old enough for the actual dynasty part of Medieval Dynasty to become relevant, I have been rich, successful and bored for approximately fourteen medieval years. My heir is still two or three years old and I have already solved civilization.
I can build a town. I cannot put a bowl on a table.
This remains my greatest grievance.
There are very few house designs, which I can live with. What I cannot understand is how, after all these years, we still don't have a proper system for placing decorative objects.
I've watched videos of people decorating. They drop an object. Pick it up. Carefully drag it. Rotate it. Lose control of it. Drop it again. Pick it up again. Reconsider their life choices.
Three hours later there is a vase on a shelf.
No.
I have 700 hours in this game. I am not spending another 700 arranging six apples.
Give us an actual placement system. Snap points. Rotation controls. Furniture slots. Something.
I understand that freely placing furniture inside existing houses could create clipping problems. Fine. Then restrict where furniture can go. Let me put a table against a wall. Let me put a chair somewhere sensible.
Actually, let me have a chair.
I founded this settlement. I built its economy. I employ half the countryside. Apparently I still cannot be trusted with indoor seating.
And then the weeds arrive.
Nothing says "successful medieval town" quite like spending hours creating a beautiful property, stepping outside to admire your work and discovering that the landscaping department has apparently been dead since 1147.
The weeds are everywhere.
Around houses. Through orchards. Across carefully planned spaces. Because the surrounding grass can be quite sparse, they don't even disappear naturally into the landscape. They stand there proudly and individually, like botanical graffiti.
There is technically a solution: build roads over them.
But I don't want to pave my entire settlement because I have entered into a personal war with six ugly plants.
I understand that Medieval Dynasty isn't going to give me a suburban lawn, nor should it. But surely there could be a way to recognize the boundaries of my settlement and let me clear unwanted vegetation within them. Give me a landscaping tool. Give me a scythe. Give me a particularly motivated goat.
Anything.
I want nature around my town. I just don't want nature making very specific aesthetic decisions against me.
My kingdom is ruled by the four cardinal directions.
Then there are fields.
I play Oxbow repeatedly because I prefer its freedom. I don't want to return to the other map, be forced to play a man, spend forever questing and walk halfway across medieval Europe before transportation becomes affordable.
But suitable land in Oxbow is limited, particularly if you aren't building only six houses and calling it a village.
I build towns.
Around Piastovia, usable flat land is interrupted by water and clay deposits. Near Klonica, the large islands provide some of the better options, but then agriculture introduces its own religious doctrine:
The field shall face north-south or east-west, and thou shalt not question it.
The island curves.
My town curves.
Nature curves.
The field does not care.
With another map coming, I sincerely hope the developers give serious builders some generous expanses of flatter, usable land. I don't mind clearing it. I'll happily cut down dozens or hundreds of trees.
Which is fortunate, because apparently I am the only person in my logging industry qualified to cut down an actual tree.
My workers are now visibly working. Just not at their jobs.
There was considerable excitement about the update that would make villagers' work more visible.
Excellent. This was something I genuinely wanted.
Except... what changed?
My farmers worked visibly before. They still work visibly. Honestly, I struggle to figure out what the update changed, if anything at all.
My lumberjack, has been assigned exactly one task: bring me logs. No planks. Just logs.
So naturally I find him sitting at the woodworking station, enthusiastically shaving away at a log as though he's making planks.
Sir.
I specifically asked you not to make planks.
If you're producing logs, shouldn't I occasionally see you wander into the forest and attack a tree? How did the update change what you were doing before it?
Apparently not. He spends his day theatrically manufacturing the product I told him not to manufacture, then gets annoyed when I ask him to move because I actually need to use the workstation to make the planks myself.
The herbalist has embraced the same management philosophy.
Her assigned job is to gather plants.
Where is she?
Inside the herbalist's hut, apparently making potions.
I didn't ask for potions.
So I'm genuinely confused about what this much-promoted visible-work update accomplished. My villagers are certainly more committed to performing work, just like they were before the update. It just bears no particular relationship to the work I've assigned them.
Perhaps the next update could introduce the revolutionary concept of:
Employee reads job description.
And if I need a particular area cleared for construction, my lumberjacks cannot do that either. They can generate 400 logs from some metaphysical forest invisible to human eyes, but the tree standing exactly where I want my next house?
That's management's problem.
So the ruler of this prosperous settlement grabs an axe.
Again.
My storage building appears to have suffered an explosion.
This same frustration applies to the visual improvements shown around the updates.
I saw promotional material showing beautifully dressed-up storage interiors, with goods and food appearing around the buildings and making them look stocked, busy and alive.
Wonderful. I wanted that.
Then I walked into my own resource storage.
Apparently my particular dynasty specializes in enormous piles of leather and miscellaneous medieval crap.
It does not resemble the charming, richly stocked spaces that made\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

But today I opened the game to find a message about a "free update" wherein all of the actually relevant new features are in fact locked behind a DLC paywall. This is a high-pressure sales tactic, and it's inexcusable. Simply releasing the paid DLC would have been absolutely fine; releasing the least-important part of that DLC as a "free update" in order to tempt players into buying the additional content is where you crossed the line. I will not support this kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ sales practice. Neither Render Cube nor Toplitz Productions will receive any further business from me.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The only gameplay is basic hunting, and fighting bandits, both of which have horrible path finding. Its great for building a village, but the fun ends there, world feels empty and its generally a slog of a walking sim, takes a long long time to unlock a mount. The vibes are great dont get me wrong, but the game is very boring.... would not reccomend this game.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

They keep adding new things which is a plus. Love the story line, the quests (if you want to do them) and especially the building and decorating the town. The "huge" "open world" is a big empty map padded with junk. We robbed every villager, built a few settlements, paid the landlord's debt twice, and searched hundreds of points of interest that held nothing but trash aside from local currency. And then there's the quest where you find a note on a rock by a lake, get sent running across the whole map twice, and then have to wait until next season to finish it. It took me an hour, and that's wild. It felt like the devs spent more time debating where to shove a broken bow with 3% durability or sum ♥♥♥♥ than working on actual content.
There is literally no action. You spend hours looting and walking, and the only fights are against bandits who happen to be better geared than you, so you have to grind your way out just to take them on. The combat is clunky, and the wolf sounds like a Supra drifting around you. Five years, and nobody caught that HUUUHVV???!!
The one thing I'll give it is the interesting mechanic for researching new gear. But hey that's not enough to hold a game together.

I love this game to bits!
There are some things that I feel the studio could improve on instead of focusing on DLCs though.
- The graphics while beautiful could be improved on or atleast better optimised.
- Most of the animals sit like theyre made from the same model?
- What do you mean I cant place this building there? Could you say whats in the way instead of just saying NUHUH
- A wolf can push me backwards 10 metres and attack me 3 times in one second while my shield is glitching and not protecting me?
- I feel like some of the conversation options dont give the impression that the NPC listened at all to what I just said.
- Why are there 3 different chests? They dont give any advantage to unlock the next one except it looks different. I can put a measly 50kg of stuff in it?
- I know I have the storage but cant the Chests in the workplaces be a bit bigger for us that does most of the work ourselves?
- I cant place furniture in my house? It only clips to the ground. Its kinda boring that the houses only can have the ”decorations”.
- Sometimes I get double the amount of complaints from my villagers and It confuses me haha
That being said, its an amazing game, it just needs a good polishing touch of the base game.
The DLCs I feel are only cosmetic ( I know the latest one brings some more clothes and animals but the rest? )
I gotta say, Im just happy that the DLCs arent super expensive!

Wolves charge you and you get stuck to hem and they bite you three times in a row and you die instantly ahving to wait like 2 minutes to load the last save and losing up to 20 minutes of progress. Spent an hour trying to find a small injured guy in a giant forest area with hard to follow blood splats. I've been playing for 4 hours and I ahve a house and a barn and that's it. This quest is sending my on a 2 hour walk while my character whines about heat the whole time.

I first tried the Valley map some time after release and enjoyed it for a while, but I didn't really fall in love with Medieval Dynasty until giving it another chance in 2026. The developers have clearly put a lot of work into the game since then, and after spending more time understanding the management systems, it has become my favourite game at the moment.
I especially enjoy building my own small settlement and watching it slowly turn into a place that feels like home. I hope the game stays in active development for a long time.
What I love
- Excellent balance between management and freedom. I don't have to micromanage every tiny thing, but I still have enough influence over production, housing, jobs, animals and village layout to stay invested.
- Great balance between automation and doing things yourself. NPCs can take over most repetitive production, while the player still benefits from personally using buildings and interacting with animals, for example collecting additional eggs, manure or mining resources.
- The world is large enough to explore freely without feeling empty.
- Quests are almost completely optional. I love that I can mostly play my own story instead. Combat is also minimal and often avoidable, while bandits and hostile animals still make the wilderness feel like an actual wilderness.
- Beautiful environment and strong seasonal atmosphere. The seasons look and feel different and also affect available resources. I currently play with 15-day seasons and don't find that too slow at all.
- Buildings look great and offer a surprising amount of customisation, including upgrades and decoration after construction.
- Being able to relocate almost everything is incredibly helpful when a village grows organically instead of being perfectly planned from day one.
- Lots of animals, both wild and domestic, make the world feel more alive, the sounds seem realistic enough and some are genuinely really cute.
- I also really appreciate the fair DLC pricing. I want to support continued development and will happily buy future DLC even when a particular pack isn't aimed at my personal playstyle.
Things I would love to see expanded
- More personality and social simulation for villagers. In longer playthroughs the same voice lines repeat constantly, often across many NPCs, so villagers eventually start feeling interchangeable. I would love more dialogue variation, friendships, conflicts, family interactions, routines or small events between villagers.
- More clutter and decoration. There is already quite a lot, but I will always want more. :D
- More reasons to produce varied food. At the moment villagers seem perfectly happy eating the same basic food forever. Food variety, better beds and similar upgrades affecting happiness even slightly would make many existing systems more meaningful.
- A little more economic depth. Early on I struggled to make money, while later metal production made money almost trivial. Merchant specialisation could be interesting, for example blacksmiths preferring tools and weapons rather than every merchant happily buying dozens of bronze knives.
- Dogs! I would absolutely love dogs as pets or village animals.
- The quests are generally not the strongest part of the game for me. Many feel like simple errands, but thankfully the game gives me enough freedom to ignore most of them and create my own goals instead.
- more random encounters, travelers, market stalls and taverns actually attracting NPCs beside your own villagers would be fun.
Bugs / rough edges
- Some animal animations and pathfinding could use more work. Animals occasionally clip through terrain, pigs constantly get in each other's way entering the pigsty, and there seems to be something very strange about the front legs of all the purchasable horses.
- Fishing huts and some other buildings can also be frustrating to place because seemingly harmless rocks or terrain can block construction.
Biggest pain points
- COLLISION. By far my biggest frustration with the game. Building placement can be extremely restrictive, and sometimes perfectly flat, visibly empty land is apparently blocked by invisible objects or terrain collision. This is especially painful when designing an organic-looking settlement rather than a strict grid.
- Fields and orchards cannot be rotated and are also among the few things that cannot simply be relocated. I understand the developers have explained that field rotation causes problems with NPC farming, so I can live with it, but it still makes settlement design a bit harder.
- Only one player heir in single player. For a game called Medieval Dynasty, having only one child makes the family/dynasty aspect feel much smaller than it could be. The developers have addressed the technical reasons for this, so I understand why it currently works this way, but we can still dream.
Despite those complaints, I am having a ridiculous amount of fun with the game. What keeps me playing isn't really completing quests or maximising production. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is such a beautiful game. I think the developers should be really proud because this is such a great game, it was worth the money I paid for it, really. It has helped me in many ways. After playing so many other "action"-packed games my brain was quitting gaming almost, and made me think how gaming was becoming not enjoyable for me anymore. I started this game thinking I would not like it, so I just messed around for the first 3 hours of the game then started working on fixing some basic stats, then 4 days later I am completely immersed into it. I was unable to quit my village just from pure emotional attachment from my effort, despite that I started it "as an experiment", but everything has been very rewarding. There are some details in the game that you can tell the developers put a special love into it. It is a small detail, but I love when you are working in the field and the ground is different depending on the crop that was there before, I think it shows that this game was made with love and really cares about a specific experience. My first combat was a bear, since I had unlimited health and stamina I defended myself. When the bear's health was low it ran away.. weird.. the bear went in circles.. a bit annoying.. Ah each animal does the same thing.. great.
I started building my settlement, had to clear cut an entire forest of course for a couple buildings.. I went to farm
and the grid for farming was at an angle to the road which would mess up my whole setup. I couldn't find a way to adjust the angle of the farming plot. It was around here I thought, am I really going to spend the time to find out how the later parts of the game play if it's this unpolished already?

The main quest is extremely short and feels like just running up and down the map to talk 2-3 times to each npc with no meaningful gameplay in it beyond that.
The city builder aspect of the game is somewhat cool but most of the decorations are unlocked after you grinded tens of hours to advance the tree.
