It starts out as a spooky roguelike card game. You are trapped in a shack and forced to play with a mysterious figure in the dark. Every run introduces new cards, mechanics, and cool ways to win. But it's not just about building a good deck...
There are secrets and puzzles hidden throughout the room that unravel the story.
Cards have different types of cost to play, different breeds that react to your totems, and sigils that basically act as card abilities. you can merge cards to make a stronger card, or destroy one and give it's sigils to another. possibilities are endless.
Some cards are alive and talk to you, judge your plays, and help you escape the room.
You gamble, sacrifice cards, and pull out your teeth just to tip the scales in your favor (Yes you can actually do that with a plier LOL)
After finishing the story, you unlock the endless mode that allows different starting decks, and challenge modifiers that can make things more exciting. I personally played this mode more than the actual campaign.
And if you don't care about spoilers, the trailers and screenshots on Steam store page only show you the first act of Inscryption. There are TWO more acts, each with different visual style, cards and mechanics.
Boss fights are also super fun. One boss turns your Steam friends into cards (with their pfp and names). Another boss makes you LITERALLY delete files from your computer.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI'll preface this review by pointing out I'm not the biggest fan of deckbuilding games. Inscryption, however, caught my eye due to its horror theme, and on that front it didn't disappoint.
The core game unfolds as you play against some mystery shadow opponent whereby it quickly becomes apparent the stakes are life and death. The game does a wonderful job of presenting a claustrophobic atmosphere, essentially putting you in a locked room whereby you can interact with the scenery outside of the game table, and you must, as your mysterious talking cards help direct you to do so. The more games you play (and inevitably lose), the further you start to progress as you familiarise yourself with the various cards while adding ever more powerful ones to your potential hand thanks to the unlocks in the mystery room. Once you finally defeat your mystery opponent, the game expands into a whole new plane, with neat little "found footage" video that goes into the lore of Inscryption, in which is literally presented as a paranormal card game being played out by various gods seeking control of the game world. The developer gets bonus respect for how creative he got with some of the mechanics, too, whereby the game uses external sources within its rules, from you getting to create your own cards, or coming up against cards, drawing names from your Steam friends list to name cards that come up against you, and even having you select files from your own PC to use as currency in order to give the sense that this thing has infected your PC and drawn you it.
There are three acts in total, each with four boss battles, all of which play differently even though the concept behind them is the same, and all of which are set in separate areas with their own puzzles to solve beyond just doing the run up the card board. Once their done, an additional hard mode "mod" opens up, that extends the lore behind the game further while testing your ability to create an uber card that can destroy every opponent in round one.
Obviously I'm not the best judge of the card mechanics as a whole, but many of systems were easy enough to figure out, and once you'd seen enough of the cards and map points it wasn't hard to figure out how to create powerful cards that trivialise much of the mechanics. As mentioned, the game itself begins to rig the encounters in your favour the more you struggle, and even first time card game players shouldn't have a problem getting through the main story with a little thought.
If I had to give it some criticism, I'd say the hard mode mod game at the end went on a little long. The concept of a difficulty whereby you're guaranteed to lose and have to build a super card is all well and good, but it didn't have to go for 12 rounds. Sure, you unlock entirely new and interesting cards along the way, as well as additional handicaps to play against, but all that is irrelevant when the strategy is exactly the same on every level since the enemy is so rigged against you that anything beyond a first round win is an automatic defeat. And the longer this goes on, the more frustrating it becomes when it becomes apparent that creating that I-win card largely falls down to multiple layers of RNG. By the time you're going for the final debuffs you're spending upwards of an hour running the first map in the hopes that the correct combination of cards, enhancement points, and items come up, else you wipe on the first boss and restart. And that's a shame, since there's a pretty interesting new boss at the very end whose mechanics are entirely trivialised by the need to have the I-win one-shot card in play to even reach him.

Different genre, different mood, even the card game changes its presentation into something worse. If you go in expecting an interesting little horror card game roguelike, be aware this is in reality a terrible pokemon rip-off. The card game itself even shifts from something unique and clever into generic robots and zombies and wizards. Never experienced such a whiplash let down in gaming.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The cards themselves and their abilities are creative and the art-style is so pleasing to the eye. The game starts as a seemingly ordinary rogue-like card game, but as time progresses you realise that the games direction is far more unpredictable and exciting. Very interesting gameplay and a unique story that unfolds in such way unlike most triple A or even indie games. I was skeptical at first but now there is not doubt I love this game. I really want a sequel of some sort although we are probably not getting a direct one. I mostly want a sequel because for the biggest part of the game we play a limited version of the game and only in act 2 we see the real INSCRYPTION and I think taht ahs potential for a full game with maybe even multiplayer although, I understand it wouldn't make much sense since the game got deleted in the end and a multiplayer RPG style game would be very hard to implement. . Also Kaycee's mod was a very nice addition to add more gameplay hours. Another expansion like it in act 3 style would be much appreciated as well \t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The lore is as deep as a rabbit hole and even without the whole real life thingy, the concept of 4 immortal and powerful A.I that could take over the world being trapped and imprisoned in a video game is already a really good, unique and powerful premise that one would say Hollywood could never even dream about.
The character are nice, the gameplay loop is also very enjoyable, the atmosphere to the music, its all good.
However there is one big caveat, the first act was really good, i enjoyed. The 2nd act while rich in terms of story, really loses me at the gameplay, it was just abit worse then first and 3rd act.
However, the 3rd act is where is really loses me, but i think this is a genius design choice because of the story, and obviously if you played the game you would know.
Overall? it is a really good game, it genuinely changed me as a person. This game comes with a big moral of the story which is Never be greedy, Don't think too highly of yourself (Don't have high ego), and Death is inevitable.
The way the story portrays each character is just really good, I really loved every single character in this game. My favorite being the Scrybe of the Magick, Magnificus. He genuinely captures someone who is a power hungry egoistical man but hides it behind him being the Scrybe of Magick, but he wants more.

His death scene really hits me, as the "Inscryption" or the Game slowly falls apart killing everyone one by one, his death seems really realistic. He was willing to fight us till the very end just for a sliver of chance for him to survive. He put up a really good fight, in the end, as the game slowly crumbles, he falls down and instead of admitting defeat. He slowly crawls towards you, using the last of his energy to give his hands to you so you can take him out of the game. Then he dies.
of course he is like a sub plot of the whole game, but that scene shocked me because I would do that too... everyone would and it shocks me that this type of behaviour is rarely represented in Media or Gaming.
In the end, It changed me to become more self aware. That greediness, ego and pride is a downfall oneself .

Artstyle, atmosphere, mystery and puzzles in the first act are amazing even though the gamplay is just an inferior versison of Slay the Spire. After that, though, the story becomes lame and annoying with cringey live-action segments, the artstyle changes entirely to that of a B-grade Gameboy game, and the UI sucks. I checked the wiki to see if it ever returns to what act 1 and the store page pressents, but it seems it doesn't.
