project zomboid is easily one of the best zombie survival games ever made. it doesn't hold your hand, and every decision matters. whether you're scavenging for food, fortifying a base, or simply trying to survive another day, the game constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat. every death feels like it was your own mistake you could have easily prevented, which makes surviving even more rewarding.

Respawn. Die again. I actually love cooking in this game and decorate my house. But zombie keep sticking their noses into my business.. I am still a newbie so there are still a lot of things I need to learn. Even if I keep dying, I still enjoy this game and I'd recommend. 10/10.

Modders are keeping this game playable, IE the ladder climbing mod as the current build overhauled the entire map with broken buildings and nonfunctional ladders; and the mod that turns the 20kg anvil that's been in the game for years that (somehow) does not function as an anvil with the "improved" crafting system into a functional anvil.
Surface level gameplay (running around killing zombies and looting food) is fine, but the longer you look or try to engage with its systems, the worse it gets. So many crafting recipes make zero sense or are very obviously place holder. Almost inexcusable after more than a decade and a half in development. Long time fans are die hard and will turn a blind eye or handwave issues away under the guise of "realism".
"Realistically" I don't see this game ever releasing. I've always been someone who focuses on game visuals and when I saw friends playing this I genuinely thought "what is this old game they're playing?", but after watching some streams I was very intrigued and decided to purchase the game.
I picked it up relatively fast for the amount of things there are to learn and what I adore about this game is the realism in everything you do and need to do, you can set goals as big as you want or as small as you want and you can play the way you want to play. I'm an avid Sims player and before you buy the game you might think "how did you end up playing this?" but the game can genuinely be played in a way where you are the "Sim", especially with mods. Kudos to the devs for being so open to mods, but also kudos to the community for being so eager to keep creating them!

The level of detail in configuration, clothing layering system, etc., each version of this game is a whole other game. This gets even better with the great mod support (example: Hydrocraft for B40, many awesome map mods in B41, and the Ark for B42).

Just note that this game updates real slow and the developers sometimes put questionable features like muscle strain and trees/bushes giving scratches that bleed. I feel it does the community disservice by disabling the map. I think the creators put a lot of love into the game and I respect the time they took to make one of the best zombie games imo that I've played. Unfortunately, with how they handled the taking down of the interactive map all of a sudden left a bad taste and made me lose trust in the company's intentions. I really hope they dont go the path of greed and keep to the spirit of labor of love. The stable release has more bugs atm than unstable 42 had. You'll never see the end game content which the devs have added for some reason (which requires like 100 hours of grinding not just skills, but loot collecting in a game with no savegames). As an art piece of the first few times you play and die fighting, it's compelling and I'd say everyone should experience their first few runs of this. As an actual game: no. Not fun. And I think anyone finds themselves questioning the choices of the devs when they play this.
If you think skill issue, please consider how much fun you had learning all of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ things you have to avoid to avoid an instant death. I love crawlers behind trees and barriers that you physically cannot see knocking you into instant death bites.
This game is not finished. To be honest -not even close to a finished experience. The UI is still the exact same as it was a decade ago, you spend most of your time in menus. Visibility is non-existent at times. Gameplay is so bad, it's menial tasks ad nauseum. You're punished with instant death if you try anything "fun" that's not slowly and methodically wasting your time. And to me what's even worse there is no levity, there's no beauty in this game. There's no reason or goal that's naturally available. This game is depressing in aesthetics and gameplay and it's not for any good reason. It's as if the devs wanted to make a great foundation for a great game and then decided "what if we used this to make the most optimal bad experience for the player?". This is the one game you see a lot of people say that "they just don't get it" or "this game isn't for me". And people who love the game editing everything about it so that it actually becomes slightly fun, as other reviews I've seen have said: this game isn't hard, it's a test of your patience.
One thing you'll see repeated about this game is how dangerous "greed" is. How overconfidence will get you killed. From another perspective just replace greed with "having fun". Did you want to start a new base somewhere? sorry you're dead. Did you want to try out guns? sorry- dead. Did you want to visit all these new locations? sorry- either you waste days of your life to clear out one location like the racing track from hundreds of zombies to even experience the location, or maybe... just die. And lose all your progress. Play a boring time sink of a game- or die.
It annoyed me in build 41 that I couldn't put a finger on why I didn't like the overall experience. Despite being impressed and found it interesting at times. But replaying it, I realised this isn't a game you have fun in. This is not a "game", this seems to have been designed as an art piece. One that you can experience once or twice and be completely fine with never returning. "Oh wow that emergent story telling was cool, I got lost in the woods and died/ I got drunk and crashed the car/ I got lost at night and eaten". Being early access though, you might return only to have the exact same experience with an annoying obtuse depressing game again despite the new features that fundamentally don't change the experience or design of a flawed empty experience. (look at footage from a decade ago and the game is almost identical only back then it was quirky and interesting because you could imagine that it wasn't finished, and there would one day be a point to this art piece).
