And it's not even that there's a bottomless ocean of content, or that mods like Calamity transform the game into a completely new universe. No, the main thing is something else. I have bought and played Terraria several times over nearly two decades, and would happily do so again. I have clocked countless hours playing on other platforms. I've bought it on my phone, I've played it on console, I've owned it on GOG. It's been with me for nearly two decades, across computers new and old. The creator just keeps making the game better, adding more and more incredibly interesting and surprising things to do.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThis is a game I've dedicated a lot of time into and will continue to support because it's truly a good game, but I have a lot of problems with it that I think are hard to ignore. My review would be more mixed if Steam allowed it.
But first, I want to go over some of the good qualities it has:
It has a lot of replayability factor with its sheer number of unique weapons, armor pieces, and accessories. You can either pick up a class between melee, ranger, mage, or summoner; or you can mix and match gear for different playstyles or challenges. It has a charming artstyle with an amazing soundtrack to boot. It features many texture packs and mods that can completely change the way the game feels or improve on what the base game had already established.
Now with that out of the way, here are the problems I have with it:
The name of the game is grinding, and if you don't have the time to spend hours upon hours grinding for each item you need, you might as well give up now. To make matters worse, the poor balancing of weapons and enemies leads to moments where you'll repeatedly die and likely hit a wall without those insanely hard-to-get items. Afterwards, you'll need a lot of money to reforge them, which you often won't get enough of without an exploit or a mob farm.
The game's multiplayer system is evidently outdated and will sometimes cause enemies to move erratically or vanish off-screen -- that is, if it even decides to let you into your friend's world that day, because you will be met with the "Lost Connection" screen a LOT.
The pacing is inconsistent and everything past Plantera basically becomes a boss rush. There's no more incentive to mine, check out other biomes (aside from the Dungeon), or appeal to your NPCs because the next boss kill or event will just conveniently give you whatever you need to progress. This one is more of a nit-pick that either will or won't affect the average player depending on their playstyle, though.

The game's multiplayer system is evidently outdated and will sometimes cause enemies to move erratically or vanish off-screen -- that is, if it even decides to let you into your friend's world that day, because you will be met with the "Lost Connection" screen a LOT.
The pacing is inconsistent and everything past Plantera basically becomes a boss rush. There's no more incentive to mine, check out other biomes (aside from the Dungeon), or appeal to your NPCs because the next boss kill or event will just conveniently give you whatever you need to progress. This one is more of a nit-pick that either will or won't affect the average player depending on their playstyle, though.
I write this review because I genuinely care about this game and want to see it get better, and I have hope that, with enough time, the developers will fix all of the issues I have listed and make it more enjoyable for everyone that plays it.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI've got a bunch of problems with this game that eventually stopped it from being fun to me. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game if you don't mind my problems. After all, the game is cheap even not on sale and the devs have spent 15 years to this day giving us free updates and content. However it's got issues I can't overlook and that a new player is not likely to know.
My main issue is that this game is almost entirely dependent on you using a wiki and guides to play. If you don't you will quickly become lost about what you need to do to progress the game. Like it's not immediately obvious how to spawn the wall of flesh, especially since the enemy that drops the summoning item is rare. And even when you do figure it out, and then figure out you need a long platform to actually fight him, how are you supposed to know you need to take your newfound hammer and go smash the altars in the corruption to spawn new ore? Also that when you beat this boss it spawns new corruption that can quickly take over your world and screw you over if you aren't prepared, meaning you need to use a guide or you're going to have a bad time. How do you figure out where to get new gear at your current progression level without using a guide? How are you supposed to know that after you beat the golem it spawns new enemies in the dungeon that you need to farm ectoplasm from in order to craft new items to farm the pumpkin and frost events for new weapons and gear?
This is as far as I got before I had enough. It felt like the guide and wikis were playing, not me. I had no sense of accomplishment or joy in figuring things out because how the game is set up that's not possible without extreme amounts of time, trial, and error.
Another issue I have is that I enjoy collecting and stockpiling things, but despite mining being a big deal for this game it's actually a waste of time to stockpile. Tin is practically useless because it won't take long to find iron which completely replaces tin. And when you spawn new ores there's very little reason to bother with the first two tiers, just find and get tier 3 and make armor. Then the next set of ores replaces the previous one, and so on. Very disappointing. I like in Palworld how even the lowest tier of resources remains useful for crafting spheres and such to farm low level pals. And also that lower tier resources are often needed for the next higher up tier.
Lastly the bosses aren't any fun. They all feel pretty much the same. You build an arena when possible and then fly around in a circle kiting them to your best ability. But I also understand that making compelling bosses in an open world 2D environment is quite difficult and they did the best they could.
Things I like: accessories are a lot of fun, especially that you can combine many of them to save space. I love the quick stack feature to easily stack my inventory items to my chest with a single button. I love that there's 4 viable and distinct ways to play: melee, ranged, magic, and summoner. Each with tons of different fun weapons to use and gear + accessories to aid you. Lots of different monsters with their own loot table. It's pretty nuts how every building resource in the game can be converted into furniture and stuff for building and customization. Not my thing but it's impressive all that is there.

My problem is all the nerfs they've been doing over the decade of me playing. They've essentially changed the game I fell in love with... This has soured my opinion, making me nostalgic for something that will never be again.
1.) I don't like that you now die touching the top or bottom of the world (lost a deeply invested hardcore character due to this.)
2.) What they did to nebula armor set (an endgame set when the game has already been beaten, no point in that.)
3.) meteorite after bosses
4.) reaver shark
5.) wizard hat
6.) storm bow
7.) terra blade
8.) rainbow rod (and similar)
9.) Rod of Discord grind even more tedious
10.) Day empress of light ignores dodge builds
11.) Crate storing for hardmode prep.
12.) spider armor requires anvil now
13.) moved shadow dodge buff to hollow set (delaying when you can access it.)
Among a plethora of other things not mentioned in this list, this would go on all day if I mentioned every single nerf in Terraria history.
Essentially the developers removed a way certain players liked playing the game, you didn't have to play like this! Granted there are mods to restore these things BUT I DON'T WANT TO PLAY MODDED! I want my vanilla experience back!
On another tangent: Developers don't accredit ideas I know they took from Terraria forums / Discord and implemented into their game. (Including from myself.) I find that incredibly disrespectful to use somebody's intellectual properties without at least giving them some sort of shout out in the credits or just something... GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE! A whole community made this game where it is today, not just the developers.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The pre-boss grind for a specific class and specific items to then immediately needing an upgrade once said boss has been killed makes my nuts twitch.
