What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Game Builder is an experimental prototype built to see if a game-tool hybrid is something that folks are interested in. If users are digging it (or what it could become), we’ll continue to grow the app and develop features based on feedback.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Given this is a free early experimental prototype, it depends on users’ feedback - it could range from several months to a year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The scope of the full version is based on Early Access user feedback, but here are some of the things we have considered adding:
  • More cards, objects, and game templates
  • Sharing behaviors and pre-made objects on Steam Workshop
  • YouTube textures
  • Advanced audio controls
  • 2D UI creation tools
What would you like to see in Game Builder?

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current release includes the following features:
  • Spawn pre-made objects as well as 3D models from Google Poly
  • Create levels with terrain blocks
  • Edit the physics of objects
  • Bring actors to life with visual programming or JavaScript
  • Create lighting and particle effects
  • Share your creations on Steam Workshop
  • Play games instantly - no compiling required
Everything is multiplayer, so you can build and play games with friends in real-time.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Game Builder will remain free to the foreseeable future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are active on the Steam discussion board as well as Discord. You can also use our built-in feedback forms. However you want to talk to us, we are here to listen and improve the product for you.”

Building Challenge: Cooking Game!

If you've been hungry for new 3D assets, check out our first artist pack - "Cooking" by Courtney Millman:

To celebrate, we are starting our first weekly challenge!

BUILD A COOKING GAME

We challenge you to build a cooking-themed game and share it with the community! This challenge is on the table for one full week, so even if you can't start right away, there should be plenty of time to ketchup.

Given this our first challenge, we’re going to keep it pretty informal. More of a picnic than a fancy dinner, if you will. Just upload your creation to Steam Workshop and post it to this submission thread on the Steam message board. We can't wait to see what great games will turnip there!

The kitchen closes Thursday (June 27) at Midnight GMT, so submit your delicious game before then! We’ll play the games during the weekend and announce a winner Monday.

Ok, it's thyme to start! Bon appetit, and remember: do or donut, there is no try.

Challenge FAQ

Who’s judging and how?
We don’t know! Try the games out, rate them, and leave (constructive) comments. We’ll take your reviews and notes into account when choosing a winner.

What do I get if I win?
No prizes - just the pride of a job well done.

Where can I make suggestions about how to run these weekly challenges?
Post them to this suggestions thread on the forum - these challenges are for the community, so we want to know how you think they should work.

Where can I see more of Courtney’s art?
For more of Courtney’s work, follow her on Twitter or Artstation.

What's with all the food puns in this post?
They are cheesy, but hopefully you will lettuce get away with it. You never think about food puns? We do it on a dairy basis.

Mega update: New terrain system and more!

Hey everyone, we just released a huge update for Game Builder!

The whole world is now voxel-based terrain, so you can dig into the ground, make mountains, and create whole worlds.

The Creation Library features new custom-made assets to play with, including a fully controllable fox and alien!

You can also make lights, sounds, and particle effects directly from the Library - be sure to turn on "night mode" to really see your effects shine.

Game Builder features brand new game examples and templates, including an FPS and "logic playground" to learn about our card-based logic system.

Speaking of the logic tool, we've continued work on the card-based system, refining its interface and functionality, and adding a ton of new cards.

Please note: This is a humongous update, so some of your old projects and workshop items may not work anymore. If you'd like help converting your project to this new version, email the file to gamebuilder@google.com.

Thanks again for checking out Game Builder, and let us know what you think. All of your feedback is super appreciated!
