What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game is system complete with action-packed gameplay and sweet sound generation. We're in Early Access to fine tune the balance, the controls, and the progression so that the game feels and sounds perfect.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“One to three months to polish and catch bugs.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Apart from polishing the game and adding more content, there will be a few new features in the full version:
  • New Items and unlockables let you craft your favourite build.
  • New sets of sounds and a 'playlist' feature to allow favourite sets of sounds to be cycled during play.
  • New visual styles and skins.
  • Final boss scripting and (very) late-game challenge balancing.
  • A few suprises ;)

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Fully featured, action-packed gameplay with a great sound generation engine. Chase high scores or immerse yourself in the sounds of Synth mode to create a brilliant performance!
The game features several completed game modes & upgrades to unlock and boasts in-depth control over the under-the-hood synth engine in realtime during play.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. We have no plans to change the price from Early Access to Full Version.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“You will help perfect the feel of the game from the controls to the timing and balance. You will help shape or suggest new features as they develop. Your feedback in the discussion forums will help us make this game the perfect Synthesis between action and sound.”

Early Access Launch! What to expect during Early Access

As you can imagine, we are very excited to see people start to play the game and give us feedback. We're expecting Early Access to be relatively short, since the focus is on tuning the game balance, adding a little bit of content, and of course fixing some bugs. Here are some of the other things we'll be working on:

  • New unlockable perks/skills
  • Some new visual styles and skins
  • Polish and tuning on the boss and the overall game flow for reaching the boss. Let us know if it's too easy/too hard, both the fight itself and getting to the fight.
  • Pushing the resolution options into the game so we can get rid of the launcher

If there's demand we may also add a few things like language localization for different communities.

You can best reach us through the discussion forums here and you can Follow the game on Steam and @TwinSynth on Twitter to get the latest details.

Calling All Inverts!

I'm an invert.

There, I said it.

I invert the Y-axis when I use a controller in FPS or 3rd person games.

I know, I'm an animal.

It never occured to me that people might want Twin Synth to have an 'Invert' option but, based on recent requests from players, I've now added an options menu & the first entry in it is a toggle to invert the direction fired when analogue sticks (or WASD/arrow keys) are pressed (eg. press left to shoot right when activated).

I'll be looking to move the other options from the launcher (resolution/monitor/controls) into this new menu over the next couple of months. I'll also be adding a list of stats (high score/fastest time etc.) to be tracked here.

A few other minor changes have also been made, all detailed below:

New Features:
- Added options menu (available from the main menu)
- Added option to 'Invert Sticks' - shooting direction will be reversed while this is active (does not affect Bass Mode)

Changes:
- Menu control will now switch dynamically between controller/keyboard & mouse inputs - the mouse cursor will be hidden when using a controller or keyboard.
- The selection cursor now moves between menu items more quickly when using a controller/keyboard (allowing more intricate hi-hat patterns).

Bugfixes:
- Fixed a bug causing inputs to be misread when switching between Mouse/Keyboard/controller.
- Fixed items being highlighted by the mouse while using a controller.
- Fixed a bug causing nothing to be selected in the menus when clicking on the background using a mouse.
- Fixed a bug causing control to be lost when switching between screens or loading a new one.
- Fixed left mouse click causing Bass Mode to be activated during the pause menu if Bass Meter is fully charged.
- Fixed a bug causing player unlocks to not be displayed in the main menu when first loading the game.
- Fixed the screenshake going crazy occasionally when the player dies.

Version number: 0.02

Thanks for playing, I hope you're enjoying the game :D
Please let me know if there's anything else that you'd like to see in there,

Joe

About This Game

Shoot to move. Shoot to make music. This retro twin-stick shooter brings back the feel of a classic arcade game with thumping synth beats and sound generated by your actions. Master the unique 1-1 control mechanics to unlock the perfect build, all while racking up style points by laying down sweet bass lines.

Twin Synth is part game, part groovebox. It's part twin-stick shooter, part synthesizer.

Feel the beat in this action-packed & rhythmic twin-stick shooter where two guns are better than one. Use the unique momentum-based movement to synthesize a symphony of sound while you play or delve deep into the custom 'synth section' at any time to craft your own soundtrack.

The only game that let's you literally create the soundtrack while you play - no audio samples are used in the game at all (all sounds are generated at runtime) and so the player has full control over what they hear.

No thrusters, no engines, just Twin blasters. Shooting pushes you in the opposite direction, so shoot carefully! Shoot both guns at once for some high-level techniques.

A fully featured 16 channel mixer & synth control section gives you complete control of the sound at any time. Actions made here are carried through into gameplay and vice-versa. This means you can tweak the synths to make new unique sounds or just grab a ready-to-go preset and perform for your friends.

  • Unique control mechanics: shoot two guns at once. More guns, more fun.
  • Unique movement mechanics: move only through your recoil - be careful where you shoot.
  • Unique music-based gameplay - you make the music while you play.
  • Endlessly addictive arcade gameplay - master your technique & show off for style points.
  • The unique 'Synth Section', accessible at any time, allows you to change any of the game's sounds on-the-fly.
  • Unlock game-changing upgrades to choose how you play and craft your favourite build.
  • Unlock new visual skins & sets of sounds to tinker with in the synth section.
  • Test your skills against the final boss in Challenge Mode.
  • Aim for the high score in the classic arcade-inspired Endless Mode.
  • Experiment with unlocked sets or make your own sounds to perform with in Freeplay Mode.
  • Local Co-Op - play with a friend in any game mode - each player controls 1 gun.
  • Infinite replayability, high scores, achievements, challenges & all the good stuff.
  • 16 synth channels with dedicated sequencers, volume sliders, and mute & solo buttons.
  • Cross modulation.
  • Waveform selection.
  • Oscillator transposition.
  • Master FX (Reverb, Delay, Distortion, Stutter).
