Early Access Software

Get involved with this software as it develops.

Note: This Early Access software is not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to use this software in its current state, then you should wait to see if it progresses further in development. Learn more

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Due to the inherit complexity involved with importing a large variety of file formats at runtime for use in VR, I feel that it would be pertinent to have an Early Access period in order to ascertain if there are any additional file formats, import options, post-processing options or model manipulation tools that users may require.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“At this point I am aiming for an Early Access period of about 2 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will have additional model manipulation tools including the ability to set mesh colors, mesh rendering types (transparent for glass for e.g.), ability to scale along individual axes and ability to import custom logos for the model display scenes, ability to set real time scene lights, and more custom and demo scenes.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The user may import the following file formats:

- OBJ (with MTL file)
- 3DS
- FBX
- STL
- DXF
- DAE (Collada)
- X3D
- Blend
- GLTF
- PLY

There are various import options such as setting initial object scale and collision/physics. The user may then examine the model and change the scale, position and rotation. The user can create custom display scenes and save them for later use.”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may change is more content is added, and the application leaves early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Reddit, Steam Communities, email.”

1.7 Patch Notes

Added ability to undo delete action
Added ability to delete default props to all scenes
Fixed error when resetting layout without saving
Fixed error when resetting layout with deleted objects
Fixed missing floor colliders in Outpost scene
Fixed missing shelf, display case and display podium colliders for physics obejcts in Outpost scene
Fixed Outpost podium and medium display case unable to be repositioned
Fixed issue where physics would be disabled on physics-enabled object when remotely manipulating
Fixed issue where objects would be parented to wand on load of saved scene if Snap To Wand option enabled
Fixed air tank loading as equipment porch when loading saved scene
Removed unnecessary props from Abstract scene to reduce GPU render load (chairs, consoles, tables, etc)
Added shelf colliders to circular shelf props in Abstract scene so you can place physics props on them
Removed VR Model Viewer logos from Abstract and Futuristic scenes (in preparation for custom logos)
Removed unnecessary props from Office scene
Removed unnecessary props from Futuristic scene
Remove VRMV banners from Museum scene (in preparation for custom banner text)
Added default material to imported STL models - in future update you will be able to specify this material's paramaters

When importing an STL model, a default material is now added, which will make the model look alot better. Later I will be adding the ability to change the mesh options, such as color, shadows, texture, etc.

Some of the changes to the default scenes may cause existing layouts to load differently. For example, if you previously had a scene saved and load it again with the new scheme, some of the default props will be missing. You can recreate the scene and save again or add in the display props from the pendant menu. This is necessary to allow the user to delete the default scene props if they don;t want to keep them.

Next up I will be working on additional spawnable light controls, WMR support, material options, adding custom notes/images/videos, new scenes, async model loading, portals to traverse linked scenes and many other new features and functions.

About This Software

VR Model Viewer allows you to import a variety of model formats for viewing in VR. Supported formats:

- OBJ (with MTL file)
- 3DS
- FBX
- STL
- DXF
- DAE (Collada)
- X3D
- Blend
- GLTF
- PLY
- 3MF

Once imported you can rotate/scale the model, pick it up and examine it close up in VR, and create custom layouts for displaying your models for later use. Curate your 3D model collection and show off your work!

Known issues/limitations:

- Lights will be enabled in a future release.
- Old FBX-DOM formats are not supported.
- Newer FBX versions (2016+) are not fully supported (work in progress).
- FBX animations will be enabled in a future release
- Inverse kinematics are not supported.
- Vertex animation is not supported .
- Blend shapes are not supported at the moment.

To test if your model will work with the built-in importer, please use this tool: https://ricardoreis.net/trilib/demo/.
