Swarmlake Update 22.3

Hi all, Swarmlake Update 22 is now out which improves shards, visuals, performance, disk space and more:
  • Increased shard collect radius by 50%
  • Decreased time until shards despawn by 10%
  • Improved render performance
  • Improved bloom
  • Improved controller aiming
  • Improved supported controllers
  • Fixed reticle size at very low resolutions
  • Fixed updating leaderboard names in rare cases
  • Fixed UI navigation using Enter key
  • Fixed UI mouse hover while window is unfocused
  • Reduced required disk space
  • Tweaked lighting
Update 22.2:
  • Improved teaching bombs (hint: jump into pink enemies)
  • Fixed enemies becoming invisible in rare edge cases
  • Fixed uploading a score of 0
Update 22.3:
  • Improved tutorial pacing

Increasing the shard collect radius makes the game faster and more fun to play and to compensate the time until shards despawn was decreased. The game balance itself is unchanged and only the score will be easier to increase for everyone equally so a leaderboard reset is not necessary.

This should also bring the difficulty of getting the last achievement in line to the initial release which became increasingly harder after each update. Nonetheless Swarmlake can still be as difficult as you want it to be if you try to get a top rank on the leaderboard.

Swarmlake Update 21: About Player Feedback

Hi all,

this update is all about player feedback:

Swarmlake Update 21 aims to improve jumping, difficulty, deaths and much more. Also keep reading regarding the legacy version.

The maximum jump height limit has been increased greatly and while the initial jump height is unchanged you can now reach much higher altitude by repeatedly jumping off of enemies mid-air. This allows to have many more enemies in the arena before running out of playable space, adds more freedom for different strategies and hopefully makes the game overall more fun to play.

I think Swarmlake is well balanced and fun at the highest level however the difficulty curve was very steep. Therefore the gun fire-rate now increases at certain score milestones alongside a more gradual enemy spawn amount which should in addition to the higher maximum reachable jump height limit improve the sense of progression, pacing and engagement.

Everything dies in one hit including you. To make a game with 10,000+ enemies at once still fun to play the player hitbox is just a tiny point in space. Your eye (camera) literally needs to be inside an enemy for you to die.

While the projectile collision size has now been decreased it is still big enough to protect the player from enemies (even from behind) as long as projectiles are spawning fast enough. Therefore the gun fire-rate is directly linked to the survivability and the new fire-rate scaling in addition to the decreased projectile collision size should improve the perceived death fairness as it was previously easy to survive unlikely scenarios especially at the beginning.

  • Added gun fire-rate scaling: 75% @ 0+, 82% @ 1,000+, 90% @ 3,000+, 100% @ 6,000+
  • Added audio-visual effects for gun fire-rate upgrades
  • Added visual-only score display freeze on gun upgrade
  • Increased max jump and enemy move height limit by 40%
  • Increased score-based enemy spawn amount by 20%
  • Decreased base enemy spawn amount by 20%
  • Decreased projectile collision size by 25%
  • Decreased max possible simultaneous bomb enemies at the start
  • Improved max shadow distance
  • Improved gamepad movement and aiming
  • Fixed one frame jump input delay
  • Fixed unintended restarts when jump button is still held shortly after death
  • Fixed incorrect leaderboard input focus for one frame after death
  • Fixed displaying missing leaderboard entries around player for top 4 ranked players
  • Fixed shard visible state on collect in rare cases
  • Fixed prioritizing removing farthest invisible bomb enemy in case of spawning a new one when already at the simultaneously spawned limit
  • Fixed updating last leaderboard entry username
  • Fixed simultaneous gamepad and keyboard movement input
  • Fixed gamepad rotation speed during slow motion effect
  • Fixed gradual footstep interval based on gamepad analog input
  • Tweaked enemy spawn sound location to prioritize bomb enemies
  • Tweaked initial enemy spawns
  • Tweaked enemy death highlight wireframe models
  • Tweaked death slow motion speed
  • Tweaked gun jump and land bob animation
  • Tweaked projectile enemy hit camera shake
  • Tweaked credits text
  • Removed music volume ducking when hitting close enemies with projectiles

Due to those balance changes the leaderboard needs to be reset and I am sorry for any inconveniences this may cause.

Legacy version
Due to player demand you can now play the old version of Swarmlake with the now replaced burst jumping mechanic by opting into the '2018' beta in Steam. For more details please read:
