Why Early Access?

“Rainbow Reactor is a project by four VR enthusiasts from Austria, Finland and Germany who mainly work in the film/video industry. Our art director Tom Hiebler and CG artist Henrik Zähringer worked on many big Marvel projects like Black Panther, Spiderman: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2. Tom also worked as a concept artist on the epic PlayStation game Horizon: Zero Dawn, several of his artworks are featured as double pages in the official art book.

Hannu Hoffrén and Kalle Max Hofmann who are game developer and director respectively have collaborated on Kalles own independent film projects like Wonderful World 3D and Our Universe 3D, which was distributed by Universal Pictures. In the year 1991, when Kalle was still a teenager, he released the Amiga game "Matchic" - it may be the rarest commercially sold Amiga game ever, with only 3 copies officially sold before distributor Digital Marketing went out of business.

Now our love of VR has driven us to try our hand at a game that is supposed to be very accessible to everyone - as a good way to introduce VR gaming to people who have little experience with virtual reality. At the same time, it has a very complex scoring system to make it the type of game that is "easy to understand, but hard to master".

We have worked on Rainbow Reactor for over a year now and put lots and lots of unpaid work hours into it. Now that we have a fully playable build with a closed game loop, we want to get the community's opinion.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“It's not easy to predict the duration of Early Access, however we're avid gamers ourselves and know how it feels when the Early Access phase seems to drag on forever. So our aim is to wrap it up in roughly 12 months, depending on which of our planned additions will be requested by the community. We are certain that players will think of some interesting, new ideas, as well. And of course money is a determining factor too - the more people will buy the game, the more time we can take off our regular jobs and invest into development. So in case of healthy sales, we will be able to make progress much faster and implement more features and assets.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is supposed to offer more variety in locations, gameplay and rewards for playing. We plan to improve visuals and acoustics as we move along, adding more music, speech and sound effects as well as animations. The core game play will remain mostly as it is now, while we have some ideas for additional game modes which would add variety and challenge.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game has a fully playable game loop. There are 9 work shifts set in the main reactor room to be played, each one with increasing difficulty as well as some special features and requirements. Some are focussed a bit more on speed, others on technique and strategic thinking. There is an online high score list, supporting the score-based gameplay with complex scoring rules, rewarding strategically planned and accurately executed moves. This encourages skilled players to squeeze the last drop of possible score out of the action. Using the "local" tab in high scores, players can challenge - and compete with - their friends.

Graphics and sounds are on a presentable level in our opinion but will be improved as soon as possible. Currently, there are 17 unlockable Achievements.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The more main features and assets are included, the higher the price will go. We expect the final price of the game to be about double or maybe even triple the amount of Early Access. We will also try to offer our Early Access Suppoters some special opportunities :-)”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are looking forward to the community's ideas, criticism and suggestions. After working on a game for a while, it's hard to still have an objective view of certain elements, so we greatly value the opinion of the Early Access players! To keep things convenient, we will use Steam's community features to communicate with players, exchange ideas and opinions and keep everybody updated.”

Lunar New Year Sale is LIVE

Hello Everyone,

Steam started their Lunar New Year's Sale with a lot of pig-themed goodness. Aren't those chat emoji cute? For people looking to expand their game library, the most interesting feature is the discount of course! If you buy games for the equivalent of 30 Dollars (varying by region), you get 5 Dollars off. In case you are looking for some inexpensive game to top off your shopping basket, we can recommend RAINBOW REACTOR of course, hehhe :steamhappy:

At the moment, we are still working on some small fixes for the game, especially regarding some issues when playing on Oculus Rift. We'd also really like to do some testing on Windows Mixed Reality, but as long as we cannot get our hands on an HMD, the system will officially remain unsupported. Sorry for the inconvenience, we'll definitely keep an eye on the topic.

Also in regards to some of your questions, don't forget to have a look at the Game Manual in the Manual Section on our Steam Store page. Last Days Of Discount ^_^

Hello Everyone,

looks like our launch week is coming to an end, and with it, our launch discount! So far, sales have been okay-ish – as this is our first release on Steam, we really didn't know what to expect. Currently it seems like we'll be selling around 100 copies in the first week, after which we've been told, sales will fall steeply.

Of course more is always better and at the current rate, we will not reach minimum wage anytime soon, considering how much time we already put into developing Rainbow Reactor – but we know VR is still a small market and we just love this technology, so we'll happily keep going at full Steam [pun intended] with your support!

Currently we are working on separate highscore tables for each "shift", as we're hoping it will be fun to compare your results with your friends in more detail. Next up after that will be modifiers, which will surely bring a lot of variety to gameplay, but which are a bit harder to set up and especially fine-tune.

Also we want to make more localised language versions with new voice recordings, as we think subtitles in VR are terrible immersion-breakers. Since we need translations and voice talent for that, it's a bit costly though. If any of you would like to help us out with your native tongue, please don't hesitate to contact us! In order to test our language selection system, we'll probably release a German version first, as most of us are speakers of the language, coming from Germany and Austria originally.

About This Game

Welcome to the future! In this fun-packed VR game which is easy to understand but hard to master, you'll help to provide an entire city with the future's very own and very clean Rainbow Energy - at the RAINBOW REACTOR!

Normal operations have collapsed when the loading crane malfunctioned. Now it's up to Dottie, a flying Soy9000 model of Germany's top manufacturer Riegfried&Soy, to train clueless Cleaner Bots into loading the reactor manually. Not an easy task, as the chromium balls which are full of precious energy are very volatile. Any mishandling could end in disaster…

Players assume the role of one of these newly promoted Loader Bots and try to work through the 9 shifts of insane work conditions. Quick reflexes, precise throwing and an understanding of adding and subtracting colours are key to success in the RAINBOW REACTOR!

The game now comes to Early Access with a fully playable game loop and the hunt for the perfect high score!
