Play with evolution! Species: ALRE is a scientifically-grounded, emergent simulation of natural selection. Creatures evolve and speciate in response to in-game mutation and selection forces, allowing you to experience and tinker with evolution in real-time.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Species: Artificial Life Real Evolution has had a large following off of Steam for many years helping to guide it's development. The game's community has helped shape it to where it is today and we truly couldn't have done it without our awesome fans! We have loved the results of this and want to continue this same involvement throughout the rest of the game's development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“While it's too early to give any definite time frame, we're looking at something on the order of three years.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Our top priority throughout development has always been, and will remain, the evolution simulation the game is built upon. We will continue to improve and expand upon the simulation to support alternate methods of locomotion and feeding, new interaction possibilities, new genes and body parts, and new options for players to choose from when setting up and tinkering with their worlds. We will also continue to improve the performance and optimization of the game.

In addition, we have a plan to implement gameplay elements in the form of in-game science and investigation. Progression will be made and additional tools unlocked by studying the simulation as it evolves in real-time.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core functionality, a real-time simulation of natural selection, is complete. Please refer to the "About This Game" section, all features described there are already implemented. There is plentiful work still to be done, however, in expanding the capabilities of the creatures and the player in their artificial universe. If you want a complete, polished and bug-free game we recommend you wait for full launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to raise the price as the game nears launch and becomes more polished, with additional content and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will continue to write our regular blog posts, Twitter and Facebook posts. We are frequently available and continuously monitor our forum which already has a good deal of traffic on it. We will also take advantage of Steam's community discussion boards to get feedback from everyone and provide support to our players.”

0.12.0.1 Experimental Release

Now available on the Steam experimental branch.

Changes:

* Gene Editor now includes a "Draw Bones" option, allowing you to visualize the skeletal physics that govern creatures body plans.
* Made dragging torso bones along the ground cost more in walk speed
* Increased cost of balance problems
* Reduced cost of compressive stress problems
* Caused Pregnancy Length to double after each litter born, making it necessary for creatures to increase their litter size if they want to engage in r-select strategies.
* Adjusted growth cost gradient to be more costly for simple creatures and less costly for complex ones

* Fixed bug preventing gene splice from working
* Fixed bug preventing corpses from being revived
* Fixed bug preventing corpses from showing up on the Sat Map
* Fixed visual bug showing the creature total as "CAPPED" indefinitely, despite the population dropping off

Species 0.12.0 Experimental Release

Early adopters rejoice! I've just put Species 0.12.0, the Multithreading Update, up on the Experimental Beta Branch on Steam!

0.12.0 adds multithreading to the underlying game engine, significantly increasing the performance (and Creature Count) of the game on computers with Dual-Core, Quad-Core, Octo-Core or Septendec-Core CPU's.

Please note that this is an Experimental Build. It is likely to be less stable and less performant (though still more performant than 0.11!) than the version that will be soon released to all Steam users.

You can access the Beta branch by right-clicking on "Species: Artificial Life, Real Evolution", selecting "Properties", then opening the "Betas" branch and selecting "experimental - Unstable Experimental Builds" from the drop down.

At the moment, 0.12.0 adds no features or tweaks: it's the same game, but faster. In addition to the obvious stability work, I will be polishing it in the coming weeks to make the survival strategies and body plans more varied and interesting, as well as see if I can make carnivory more viable.

About This Game

Species: Artificial Life Real Evolution is an evolution simulator that allows you to create, destroy, observe and tinker with life on it's never ending, harsh march of refinement! Simulated from the very first principles of evolutionary science:

Variation

  • Every creature is uniquely defined by its genes.

Mutation

  • Child creatures are slightly randomly modified versions of their parent(s).

Natural Selection

  • The environment affects every creature in their struggle to survive.

Observe or Guide

Whether you just want to observe, watch and study as the tree of life constructs itself from a single species, or you want to be an active influence on the development of the species in the game, the choice is up to you! Take a hands-on approach by using the nursery, an isolated area where you can tinker with the gene pool to your heart’s content. Use rovers to decide which creatures get to eat today and which ones starve! Create global catastrophes like an ice-age or a world-spanning flood to weed out the most vulnerable species. Or simply sit back and watch the life-and-death saga unfold!

Tell Your Story

However you treat your evolutionary sandbox, we give you the tools to tell it’s story! View every single evolutionary step in detail using the clade diagram, see where each species are living using the satellite map, get a better picture of how varied your gene pool actually is with the web of life, and view every possible detail on each creature using the creature inspection tools.

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows Vista or higher
    • Processor: 2 GHz processor
    • Memory: 8 GB RAM
    • Graphics: Shader Model 3.0
