Early Access Software

Get involved with this software as it develops.

Note: This Early Access software is not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to use this software in its current state, then you should wait to see if it progresses further in development. Learn more

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Kanova is a new VR enabled sculpting application from Foundry. Before we go too far with the development we'd appreciate more user input into how the features are implemented. Do you enjoy creating with new 3d mediums? Click that buy button (it's FREE) and provide us with your honest and constructive feedback. We appreciate the support of the Steam community during this very early phase of Kanova's development.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“We anticipate the Kanova early access program to run for a period of 6 months. At which time we will make the decision to go forward with a commercial product or go back to the R&D Lab to come up with another more suitable product idea.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Kanova 1.0 will contain as many of the prioritized user-requested enhancements and bug fixes that we can squeeze in. If we reach the end of the early access period and don't have a suitable product we may choose to extend or go back to the R&D Lab to come up with another more suitable product idea.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version of Kanova supports sculpting in VR, on the desktop, or both using a variety of brushes. It is possible to use Kanova without any VR equipment.

The Kanova Early Access version supports pen input on the desktop, in addition to mouse and keyboard. For VR input, Kanova Early Access supports HTC Vive & Oculus Touch controllers.

Currently, there is not support for Windows Mixed Reality.

The Early Access release may contain some bugs (we recommend saving your creations regularly!). Performance is not yet fully optimized: it's reasonable in most cases, but we're still improving it.

Feature Highlights
• Editing scenes using Kanova in desktop mode and within the VR environment
• Selecting different modeling tools
• Creating multiple layers
• Sculpting and painting in color
• Exporting to Sketchfab format”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Upon completion of the Early Access program there will be a price increase.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We appreciate the support of the Steam community during this very early phase of Kanova's development. Your feedback will be applied to our decisions to continue the product development process and finalize the feature set.”

Kanova 1.0v1b3 released!

We're excited to announce our latest release with loads of improvements. Check out our last Kanova webinar to see many of them in action:
https://youtu.be/SYXeqEOAHKk
New features:
  • Two new meshing algorithms:
    • The two new algorithms are Enhanced Surface Nets and Dual Contouring.
    • The original meshing algorithm is called DF3DMesh.
    • DF3DMesh is the slowest and uses the most memory, but gives the best quality mesh.
    • Enhanced Surface Nets is significantly faster than DF3DMesh and uses less memory, but can occasionally create a mesh with a small number of triangles missing.
    • Dual Contouring is the fastest of our algorithms and uses the least memory. Quality is better than Enhanced Surface Nets (it never misses triangles!) but not as good as DF3DMesh.
    • Both new meshing algorithms generate fewer triangles for the same model than DF3DMesh does, however both also produce rougher-looking edges.
    • Dual Contouring is still under development: it doesn’t support interactive remeshing yet, so shouldn’t be used while sculpting.
    • You can choose the meshing algorithm under the Edit > Meshing Algorithm submenu.
  • Improvements to the sculpting algorithm:
    • More effective at skipping empty space
    • Faster & uses less memory.
    • More memory savings
    • Over 1 gigabyte on some models!
    • Further file size reductions
    • A new version of the file format, v7, cuts file sizes in half!
  • Undo & redo support for layer operations:
    • Create layer
    • Remove layer
  • Keyboard shortcuts for enabling & disabling the wireframe:
    • Press W to enable the wireframe
    • Press Shift + W to disable the wireframe
  • Option for lights to follow the camera:
    • Go to the Scene tab and press the “Follow Camera” button to toggle this on and off.
    • Can be done separate for desktop and for VR.
Bug fixes
  • Steam screenshots now work reliably.
  • Can still run Kanova when Steam is in offline mode.
  • Fix for a crash when undoing a stroke on a layer other than the selected layer.
  • Make the wireframe overlay more subtle, less distracting.
  • Debug > Mesh Style > Blocky Mesh now shows the correct mesh colors.
  • Wireframe shows in VR now too.
  • Fix for a crash when sculpting, after changing the mesh style under the Debug menu.
  • Fix for a crash when you try to delete the root layer or the work plane.

About This Software

Kanova is a simple, easy to use, VR enabled, 3D sculpting application. It uses the patented 3D Adaptive Distance Field (ADF) technology developed by Foundry. Unlike other tools on the market, Kanova can be used in pure VR form, for creative exploration, or as a hybrid/VR desktop application. Artists can further refine and develop creations by exporting to Foundry's 3D content creation platform, Modo and Modo indie.

Sculpting in VR completely changes artists typically approach creating 3D objects. Freeing them from learning technical tools and terminology and allowing them to intuitively sculpt 3D objects in a natural fashion. The simplified nature of Kanova's interaction means that it appeals to first time users to 3D as well as seasoned artists and industry professionals, giving each a unique tool from which to create 3D artwork.

Feature highlights include:
  • Editing scenes using Kanova in desktop mode and within the VR environment
  • Selecting different modeling tools
  • Creating multiple layers
  • Sculpting and painting in color
  • Exporting to Sketchfab format

The Kanova User Guide provides details on the features available and how to access them using the Kanova desktop application and from within the VR environment.
