What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I want to give all players the opportunity to influence the upcoming development of the game. Players shall take part in the decision-making process about new features and in which direction the game is to be developed. In addition, players shall express their wishes about new features (e.g. what kind of multiplayer mode they want to have, or what features they miss). Many features and improvements that were made in the first months of the Early Access campaign are based on player feedback.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The Early Access phase will last at least six to nine months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“All existing features will be expanded. There will be more planets to explore. You will be able to play more ship classes and races. In addition, new rooms, weapons, and pieces of equipment will give you further options to customize your ships. New space and planetary quests will make your games more diversified.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is still in development, and many features will be added or improved soon. Here is a list of features that are currently available:
  • Over 50 space events with multiple outcomes
  • 12 different playable spaceship classes
  • 27 different rooms to customize your ship
  • 12 different weapon systems
  • 4 different playable races
  • Use shield drones and combat drones for tactical advantages
  • Mining lasers and mining drones can be used to mine asteroids
  • Over a dozen different planet types to explore
  • Over a hundred handcrafted dungeons to raid
  • Co-op multiplayer mode
  • Multiple story lines
  • Skill and inventory system for your crew
  • Full support for Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud and more

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, the price won't change.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“All players of the Early Access version can vote for new features in the game on a regular basis. In addition, all players have the possibility to submit their ideas, bug reports, and wishes to further improve the game by either starting a discussion in Steam’s Community Hub or by sending me an e-mail.”

Update 35

Improved game engine

Galactic Crew uses a custom game engine I developed for it. I invested the last weeks into different kind of improvements. Some of them, like improved memory management and advanced scene management are invisible to you, but there are also two major graphics improvements: shadow and better laser effects.

The shadows are optional and deactivated by default. You can enable them in the in-game settings.

I also improved the laser effects. Moving clutter and a smooth gloom effect make the laser beams more natural and beautiful - without additional render costs!

Balancing

In addition to the game engine improvements, I also re-balanced many planetary encounters. Beasts like raptors, bears, spiders or the T-Rex deal increased damage. The T-Rex also got additional hit points to demonstrate its mighty power. In addition, the attack rate of zombies was increased to make it more realistic.

The numbers of zombies on a zombie-infested ship now depends on the ship's size.

Bug Fixes
  • Moving the mouse cursor over a target behind an opened window caused the mouse cursor to show the wrong icon.
  • You could move the camera by moving the mouse cursor to the screen's edge while a modal dialog was opened.
  • There was a floor tile with a wrong texture in three temple themed dungeons.
  • Moving the mouse cursor over loot in space resulted in a flickering highlighting.
  • It was possible to loot quest items from cargo boxes on zombie ships.
  • The background of the threat level display was rendered partly outside the borders.
  • Equipping a body armor during Tutorial caused problems.
  • Fixed an lighting issue with weapon turrets.

Coming up next...

The next update will come in approx. four weeks featuring improved gameplay mechanics including but not limited to:
  • Mod options: Change any of the game's parameters like damage values and loot chances and write your own space events!
  • Improved camera navigation on planets
  • Quick saving/loading
  • More settings options like key mapping

Update 34

I am currently working on game engine improvements and improved visual effects. This update was not planned, but I wanted to publish some of the improvements I made.

Improvements
Crew members move and behave better, when you order them to gather resources, loot enemies or interact with objects.

Reduced loading time of large dungeons by more than 90%!

Bug Fixes
  • The game could lag after some time because of unnecessary user interface updates.
  • There are no longer lag spikes when giving crew members an order inside large dungeons.
  • Drones that returned to your ship after mining were misplaced after jumping to a new sector.
  • The tool-tips of the resource panel were not updated after retrofitting your ship.
  • The tool-tips of the resource panel were not updated after killing a crew member.
  • The tool-tips of the resource panel was wrong, if your ship produced as much food as your crew consumed.
  • When you returned to main menu and started a new game, you could assign orders to crew members without selecting them.
  • It could happen that a galaxy is generated without any asteroid fields.
  • Object highlighting was missing for medical supplies in two medieval cities
  • Fixed memory leak when leaving dungeons or jumping out of space combat.
  • Fixed memory leak when initializing progress bars.
  • Fixed memory leak when updating text blocks.
  • Fixed memory leak when resizing user interface controls.

About This Game

Galactic Crew is a roguelike sci-fi game that takes place in a galaxy far away. You start the game as a captain of a small spaceship, with only a few crew members and limited resources. During your journey through outer space, you will meet merchants, miners, scientists and notorious pirates. You will need to trade goods and resources to upgrade your ship and to get better equipment for you and your crew. Equip your ship with a teleporter to explore different types of planets and underground dungeons. Talk with scientists about their work, trade with merchants, rescue crashed pilots, fight raiders and vicious beasts or gather resources to craft new items.

Explore a galaxy

When starting a new game, an entire galaxy is procedurally generated for you to explore. Mine asteroid fields to gather resources, trade with merchants, get missions from space stations, upgrade your ship at shipyards, explore new galaxies with jump gates, explore planets with your crew or raid underground dungeons.

While travelling through the galaxy, you will meet random encounters and some of them want to harm you. Make sure your ship is well-armed and your crew is well-equipped!

Ship customization

All 12 playable spaceships have their own layout. Retrofit your spaceship at any space station or shipyard by replacing rooms, equipping drones and improving your weapon turrets. More than 25 different rooms are available to customize your ship. You can have everything from simple rooms like engines, generators and crew quarters to tactical rooms like teleporters, shield generators and drone boosters. Use rooms like item processors or botanical gardens to even produce your own goods and items!

Mining drones can be used to improve the mining yield of your ship, while combat drones and shield drones give you a great advantage in space combat. Various weapon turrets in different sizes and special abilities are available to arm your spaceship.

Game customization

When starting a new game, you can customize your game by selecting a spaceship, an avatar, a profession and bonus cards. Depending on your selection these bonus cards can improve your ship’s strength, add more objects to the galaxy, alter game mechanics or add story lines! You can add multiple story lines to create your own custom campaign!

Only a small fraction of these cards are available when starting the game for the very first time. You can unlock all of them by getting achievements. Play the game and you will unlock more content!

Explore planets and dungeons

There are over 100 different handcrafted dungeons to raid and over a dozen planets wait for your exploration. These explorations range from meeting scientists at archaeological sites, scrapyards and weapon smuggler outposts to medieval villages, mining outposts and crash sites guarded by large monsters.
