What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We're releasing Mekside VR as Early Access because even though there are many things we want to add to the game before it's completed, we feel that the current version gives a fresh VR experience with all the core building functionality in place and we wanted to get it out there as early as possible. Early Access also gives a good opportunity for us to get feedback that can help steer the development process, and test out our multiplayer cloud-server.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Depending on the feedback we get from this version and the features we decide to include, the remaining development time for the game could vary a lot. But the aim is to exit Early Access within 3-6 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The VR interactions that allow the active mechanical or scientific building-blocks in the game to be interconnected and programmed will be improved.

The multiplayer mode will be further improved to help social interactions.

The terrain generator will be improved on significantly, generating more interesting structures both underneath the surface and on top, like houses and roads. Likewise, the in-game terrain generation will be more advanced (the mechanism causing vegetation to grow, for example).

A game-component of survival will be added, and the NPC flora and their intelligence will increase so they can provide a more interesting (or lethal) interaction with the buildings in the game and the players.

We expect the graphics and audio effects in general to evolve and become more consistent and more materials be added.

Probably there will be an import option to import worlds from other similar games, converting materials to their best counterparts.

The current vision of the game is a cooperative, social building game heavily inspired by steampunk aesthetics with some action components.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is a VR experience centered around building and exploring interaction with a world around you, as well as giving the possibility to join our multiplayer server to socialise and build with other players.

Our philosophy with the Early Access release is to try to include the features we've developed so far that we feel are working well.

Following this idea, the current state of the game allows you to create randomly generated worlds, walk around in them freely with room-scale and controller-based locomotion, freely change / build / interact with the world around you, and the world stays persistent on your local harddrive or on our server when you're multiplaying.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We believe the price should track the value of the game, so we might gradually raise the price a bit as we develop new gameplay and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We love to discuss game features (and bugs..) on the forum, and we communicate progress in our development through our blog and YouTube channel.”

About This Game

Mekside VR is a steampunk-inspired creative VR game that lets the player explore and build landscapes, buildings or mechanical devices in a large, persistent, fully physically simulated virtual world while interacting with its other inhabitants and socialising or cooperating with other players.

The basic building block in Mekside is a cubic voxel, and there are several dozens of different materials available with unique properties. The game allows building to take place both as static blocks placed in or on the terrain, or as voxel-based objects that freely moves by physical simulation. There are motors and pistons available to interconnect built shapes, sensors to control or trigger motors and even rockets and turbine engines.

The physical simulation includes aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, so the player could build working aircrafts, helicopters and boats.

To give an immersive VR experience, Mekside VR uses two hand-controllers for the player to interact with and direct the creative process in the game. The locomotion method recommended is free movement using the touchpad of one of the controllers, with optional field-of-view limiting to make this method of locomotion work well for most players.
