What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“To receive and implement player feedback so that IronWolf VR can be both compelling and intuitive. It is important to us that we develop submarine systems and enemies that are complex enough to provide interesting gameplay while being simple to learn.

We have created some missions to demonstrate and test different gameplay elements, with the intention of putting them together in a persistent open world.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect full release to occur in 2019.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Throughout early access we will be carefully analysing player feedback which will guide how gameplay systems in IronWolf VR evolve. Our aim is to achieve an intuitive and engaging system for controlling the submarine that takes full advantage of roomscale VR.

Our vision for IronWolf VR is that players will be able to patrol the oceans and be provided with a seamless persistent open world, with interesting and varied gameplay being presenting as they sail the ocean. In this open world players will be able to enlist the help of friends to man their submarine. To achieve this we will be adding:

Gameplay features:

  • Large naval battles
  • Aircraft carriers
  • Battleships
  • Airships
  • Escort mission
  • Blockades
  • Inventory system

Submarine Systems:

  • Damage Control: Players repair their submarine through physically interacting with the submarine.
  • Torpedo room
  • Engine room
  • Additional deck gun

Environment:
  • Strategic sea forts
  • Icebergs
  • Underwater terrain
  • Night missions

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In the initial release of IronWolf VR we have included a set of mission that will enable players to:

  • Sink enemy ships with torpedoes
  • Fight enemy aircraft using the anti-aircraft gun
  • Duels with destroyers that will engage you with depth charges
  • Navigate around anti-submarine mines
  • Experience drowning when the enemy inflicts too much damage on your submarine
  • Medals awarded based on mission performance
  • A variety of difficulty levels

These missions provide a starting point for us to get player feedback before introducing new missions and gameplay mechanics. In the future, these missions will provide the basis of an open world gameplay experience.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We will announce pricing for the final launch of IronWolf VR later, as we are still reviewing if it will be the same price as Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are excited for the community to start playing IronWolf VR and giving us their feedback. We are looking to release updates on a regular basis and we will be acting on community feedback, both for guiding new features and balancing the game.”

Early Access 1.8.0.0 Submarine Pen and new UI system in BETA branch now.

In this release, we have added a submarine pen which you arrive in when you first start the game and return to between missions.

Inside the submarine pen is a blackboard on an easel which replaces the old user interface. You can either interact with the blackboard in VR using your tracked controllers or on the desktop using your mouse. It is now possible for players so join a game in progress. We have also improved robustness when handling players disconnects so that the UI will always inform players why a game has ended unexpectedly.

We have also added a wooden medal cabinet to the submarine pen which displays the medals acquired by everyone currently in your multiplayer session.

We have expanded the destroyer AI with some additional attack strategies to make it a more formidable opponent on the surface. The AI gun targeting has been improved to lead its targets more accurately.

The systems powering the blackboard are a significant addition for us as they provide the tools we need to create the complex user interactions required in an open world game. All users in the game can seamlessly interact with the same user interface at the same time. The system currently replicates the functionality in the previous user interface, however we can do a lot more with this going forward.

We have also been busy re-structuring the underlying systems that IronWolf is built upon to enable us to move away from the existing peer to peer networking architecture to an authoritative server architecture that will ultimately power the multiplayer open world and player vs player interactions.

Due to the significant number of changes, we are releasing this build as a beta so we can iron out any issues before releasing to everyone. You can opt-in to the beta using the normal methods on Steam.

Next we’ll be working on adding some more variety to the level environments with a weather system and night time missions.
