What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The main reason we decided to go with Early Access is that we wanted to test our assumptions with a smaller user base who want to help improve the game. Our goal with Reflections is to build an experience that feels natural with what the users do; our Storyteller System is designed around creating branches in narrative based on the actions a player takes, given a broad range of outcomes with varying degrees of complexity.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are anticipating the game to be in early access for a few months, to give us the right opportunity to evaluate user responses, tailor the experience to their feedback and produce new content that might be needed to fit unanticipated user input. We want Early Access to be as short as possible the feedback we've received so far has been invaluable and we want to take advantage of it to produce the most engaging game that we can.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version of the game will introduce new story branches, some of which will be based directly on user feedback. The full version is anticipated to have 3-4 additional full story arcs and outcomes, which are the ones that require the most feedback from the community to evaluate. We'll also be adding in new character relationships to explore, adding new gameplay in each region and expanding the game's ending to have a wider set of interactive variations.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Reflections is launching to Early Access with a fully playable story that spans 2 acts, and presents multiple variations of play through each that are based on our Storyteller system. The endings are represented in text instead of the interactive levels that will be present in the final version. The game is a complete experience from end to end, and should feature few or only minor bugs.

The game is not yet localized into all intended languages, but we will be pushing to add languages frequently as we move through early access to launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We are launching on Early Access at 33% below the price for full release. We know that our audience is helping us experiment and improve the game, so we want to show our appreciation by giving them a discount for joining us early. If you grab the game at any time during Early Access, you'll be able to get it for the discounted price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The initial Early Access release features the core sets of interactions and mini-games that made the most sense to us to include. Once it gets into the hands of users, we're going to find out what types of experiences they'd like to have and include those as well. We're starting with the core essentials of the experience and drilling down into them during the Early Access period, to add depth and complexity based on the feedback we get.”

About This Game

What is Reflections?

Reflections is a real-world adventure game where every action you take has meaningful consequences that radically shape the experience. The game takes a new approach to story, where everything you do can be woven into a narrative that drastically changes, thanks to our Storyteller engine. Each action you take is punctuated by flushing the black and white environment with color, illustrating your progress and providing clues to what your future might hold.

  • You create the story - The powerful Storyteller engine watches everything you do and changes the experience to suit.
  • Three Acts - Experience various moments in your life which differ radically based on what you choose to do.
  • Dynamic progression - time passes as you play, changing the opportunites and events that unfold
  • Full environment interactivity - If you want to do it, you probably can. Reflections isn't about sitting and watching. Everything has its use.
  • AI that responds to you - Multiple characters and creatures to build relationships with, relationships that may last your whole life
  • Beautiful environments - stark black and white environments that slowly get filled with color by your actions
  • Fully supports the Oculus Rift

The Setting

In Reflections, you are getting ready to leave home and start your life as an adult. You have to put things in order and get ready to leave by the end of the day. To do so, you can tidy up your business, help build relationships, or just go exploring. From there, it's up to you; the entire course of the game is based on the actions you take.

About the Storyteller

Reflections uses a unique Storyteller engine, that allows anything that happens to feed into the narrative. Rather than picking story options, everything you do is part of the story. How you choose to spend your time matters; the Storyteller shapes your future out of everything, no matter how big or small. A complex system under the hood determines how actions affect your story, and makes hundreds of changes to accomodate. These changes can be as small as an item that reappears later in your life after it was used, or as big as an entirely new landscape to explore based on your larger choices. Our goal is to custom tailer an experience that you can relate to, which feels like something that you made happen.

Virtual Reality

Like everything Broken Window Studios develops, the game fully supports the use of the Oculus Rift. We're also looking into additional options for immersive controls, and will keep everyone updated as finalize our feature set.

Tobii EyeX Eye-Tracking Controller

Reflections also supports eye-tracking technology! With Tobii EyeX, you can use eye tracking to control object selection, extend your camera's field of view, and engage in more immersive character interactions that incorporate eye contact. Reflections deals with a lot of human-scale interactions, and we are glad to provide a new level of depth to those interactions by incorporating Tobii eye tracking.

We are interested to know what you think of the Tobii integration and are looking to get your feedback during our Early Access period. Please let us know what you think!
