What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Defense & Making has chosen Early Access to improve the game's overall quality and balance before its official release.
While the core systems and worldbuilding are already implemented, we aim to refine elements such as game balance, pacing, and content diversity based on real player feedback.

Early Access allows us to engage directly with players, gather feedback, and incorporate improvements in response to their experiences.
Our goal is to create a more polished, enjoyable, and player-centered game by iterating on community input.

We see Early Access not as a pre-release phase, but as an essential part of building the best possible experience for our players.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect Defense & Making to remain in Early Access for approximately one year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version includes the full core gameplay loop, one playable stage, randomized tile and card combinations, trap and monster placement mechanics, and a partial branching quest.

In the full version, we plan to expand the content and systems with:

Up to 4 total stages with varied layouts and mechanics

A research system to unlock and upgrade tiles, cards, and monsters

An in-game shop system for customizing strategies

Expanded narrative content and more questlines

Additional monster types, tile effects, and environmental features

We will continue refining the game’s balance, visuals, and user experience based on player feedback throughout Early Access.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is stable and fully playable. It includes:

One complete stage with randomized tiles and cards

Full dungeon-building mechanics (designing paths, placing traps and monsters)

A sample story quest with player choices

A working save/load system

A complete and polished UI/UX for the core game loop

The game already offers its fundamental experience. Additional content and systems will be added gradually throughout Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. The price of the game will remain the same after Early Access.
We may offer temporary discounts or promotional pricing during Early Access, but we are not planning to raise the base price upon full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to engage with our players through Steam forums and Discord.
We will actively collect and respond to feedback related to game balance, new content ideas, and overall user experience.

Community input will be especially important when testing new features or planning future updates.
We also intend to share regular development updates, conduct feedback polls, and involve players early in content testing.”

About This Game

Defense&Making is a tile-based strategy game where you become the Demon Lord and design your own dungeon to fight off invading enemies.

From the path enemies take, to where traps are placed and which monsters are summoned—every tactical decision is in your hands.

Each element works together to create your own unique defense strategy.

Design your dungeon by arranging paths, traps, and tiles. Intruders will follow the routes you lay out, and traps will hinder their advance. Create the most lethal dungeon possible and overwhelm your foes.

Summon monsters and place traps to stop intruders. Traps are powerful but limited, while monsters spawn endlessly yet consume your dungeon’s mana. Manage both resources wisely to maximize your defense.

Research upgrades to enhance your monsters, dungeons, and traps. Each monster and tile can be reinforced in unique ways, making your dungeon deadlier over time. Intruders cannot grow stronger—but you can.

Customize your deck however you like. At shops, you can purchase items and adjust your deck. Special card-selection pages appear each round, allowing you to add or remove powerful cards strategically.

A variety of characters will appear, each with their own stories. Dialogue choices influence outcomes, adding layers of narrative and unexpected events. Who will become your ally, and who will turn out to be your enemy?

Defense & Making doesn’t have a single correct solution.

How you build your dungeon—and how you choose to stop the invaders—is entirely your own.

Instead of chasing the perfect defense we hope you’ll enjoy adapting to new challenges
and finding your own unique way to overcome them.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

This game is set in a dark medieval fantasy world, depicting a society where survival of the fittest, discrimination, and violence are part of everyday life.
Within the game's narrative and worldbuilding, the following mature themes are indirectly or contextually present.

While the game explores the brutality of the world and poses moral questions through these darker themes, it avoids explicit scenes that may cause direct discomfort to players.
However, we kindly ask players who may be sensitive to such settings and tones to take this into consideration before playing.
