What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access is a way for you to enjoy RIOT – Civil Unrest while it is in the final stages of development. With the community’s support and input we aim to make RIOT – Civil Unrest an enjoyable simulation that will keep fans of the genre coming back for more time after time.

By launching the game into Early Access we hope to ensure the game will be rock-solid when fully launched. We encourage you to provide feedback as we progress through the final stages of development. With the community’s support, feedback and input we believe we can make RIOT – Civil Unrest even better then we have planned.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We envisage the game to stay in early access until sometime around Spring 2018.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“All of RIOT – Civil Unrest’s core mechanics are in the Early Access version. We’ll continue to tweak these as well as add content. We’ll also respond to players’ suggestions, comments and recommendations. We'll also keep updating the code and offer patch/update notes so you can see exactly what we've changed.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access launch version is pretty robust. Progress on the game has been extraordinary over the past six months. We are confident the code will stand up to scrutiny.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, probably, maybe... The price point is likely to change. The price certainly won't head south when the final version is released.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We want the community to get involved. The plan is to update regularly and post in the game's community pages on a regular basis. We'll look out for user comments, observations, recommendations and the like. Where possible we'll act on the community's suggestions too. To make things easy, every time a player leaves the game they'll be presented with a Google doc that can be submitted with suggestions and comments.”

Update! - 3rd July 2018

Hey everyone!
Here's the latest update. All of the details for the update are listed below.

GLOBAL MODE
  • New cutscenes added in-game in all levels (work-in-progress for camera movement)
  • Added interlude scenes between levels (how your actions impact the whole world)
  • New end-level screen
  • Some specific levels are now better balanced
  • Prepared build for additional localisation - coming soon!

GENERAL
  • The crowd now groups around the leader only when the team is controlled by the player, to get a more realistic crowd behaviour instead of single, isolated groups
  • Fixed bugs that blocked the start of some levels while using certain combinations of equipment / special characters
  • Fixed some riot crowd phisycs bugs, in some moments it was creating a force too high compared to the previewed one
  • Italian text review (still working)
  • General bugfixing

BATTLE OF THE CAMELS
  • Level balance strongly modified, the previous one was totally on the rioters side
  • Fixed camel men animations, who sometimes fell down instead of attacking

NOTE
A lot of you guys asked us to be able to use the items you unlock in the global mode in the rest of the game. We are considering that and we'll try to do it in the next updates -but very cautiously to avoid breaking everyone's saved games!

About This Game

As the world’s economical crisis deepens and inequality tears the very fabric of society the discontentment of the masses manifests itself in violent public disturbances and civil disorder.

RIOT – Civil Unrest is the highly anticipated real-time riot simulator that places the player right in the heart of some of the world’s most fractious clashes. Campaigns include: Indignados (Spain), Arab Spring (Egypt), Keratea (Greece) and NoTAV (Italy). Seventeen single level scenarios include Rome, Oakland, Paris, London and Ukraine.

RIOT – Civil Unrest’s creator, Leonard Menchiari, experienced rioting first-hand at the NoTAV protests in Italy. He created the game to tell the stories and express the feelings experienced during these clashes. What triggers the crowd to behave with such anger and aggression? Often outnumbered, what does a police officer feel like during the conflict? RIOT – Civil Unrest presents the player with the opportunity to experience both sides of the fight - a fight in which there really are no winners. Who is right and who is wrong? Experience RIOT – Civil Unrest and draw your own conclusions.

Play as the Police

  • Employ numerous crowd-control tactics, both passive and aggressive.
  • Command Assault, Tactical, and Ballistic squads.
  • Call in police trucks, water cannon or even a tank!
  • Choose whether to use smoke grenades, rubber and plastic bullets or even live ammunition.

Play as the Rioters

  • Instruct Rioters (armed and passive) and Journalists.
  • Incite rage and cause the masses to act aggressively or try to calm the situation with tactical crowd reformation and retreats.
  • Attack authority with Molotov cocktails, fireworks, paper-bombs, rocks, street furniture and the power of the media.

Multiple Modes

  • Sixteen campaign levels split over four scenarios; Keratea (Greece), NoTAV (Italy), Indignados (Spain) and Arab Spring (Egypt).
  • See the story unfold from both sides - play all thirty-two levels as the Rioters or the Police.
  • Single player mode - play against the computer AI.
  • Versus mode – play with or against a friend or AI on the same computer.

Create your own Riots with the level editor (Coming During Early Access)

  • Alter the look of the confrontation by importing your own background graphics.
  • Position elements, vehicles and obstacles where you want them.
  • Choose and position rioters and police starting points as well as their orders and level of aggression.
